Lesson One - DADA Closed

Syrah was almost late to her first Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. She was scrambling around on the first floor of the castle, walking back and forth looking for the room labeled appropriately. Turns out this castle doesn't do much upkeep... though she should have figured that out by now. The door to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom turned out to not be marked at all. It was just a stupid wooden door that students somehow figured out was the DADA classroom. Syrah found it in time, but just barely. She snuck in, trying to be quiet in case the professor was already speaking, but she found instead a full classroom, completely teacherless. Confused she slunk into an open chair in the last row, in the middle of a wooden table, squished between two other first years. A Gryffindor and another Slytherin. The Slytherin nodded at her, he seemed pleased to have won out over the Gryffindor. She smiled back at him.

Less than a half a minute after Syrah entered the classroom, just enough time for her to pull out her notebook, quill and ink and her The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self Protection textbook, a large, scary man walked through the door, straight up to the front of the class without a look at anyone. He was instantly terrifying, screaming at the class to be quiet even though, honestly, they weren't being that loud. Professor Mellowrose... how ironic. This guy didn't seem mellow at all.

Not too be too confidant, but Syrah definitely could have answered the Professors first question to define Defense Against the Dark Arts, but Mellowrose was right, she was too scared, just like the rest of the class. If she got it wrong, which she didn't think she would - but who knows- how would he react? Not well, probably.

Really, though, the simple definition of the class was basically all Syrah new of DADA. Her parents never really got into much. Syrah suspected for a couple of reasons, one- they never really dealt with Dark Arts to begin with, and two- they might've thought they would scare the little girl. Syrah didn't think this stuff would scare her, but she could imagine it would scare anyone younger than a First Year.
  • How to stop and overcome those who risk your life.
  • Knowledge of pests and monsters.
  • How to react, combat and remove.
All of a sudden, Syrah's textbook flipped open to page eighteen all on its own. Looking around, she noticed everyone's textbooks had opened. Now that was a spell she wanted to learn! Excited now, Syrah paid close attention to Mellowrose. As he continued speaking, Syrah's excitement grew. They would be practicing spells already! In the very first lesson! Syrah was unsure what a vermillious charm was or what it might do, but she didn't really care as long as she learned some magic. She knew she would be eagerly awaiting the practical and would have to remind herself to pay attention to the theoretical lesson on Imps.

Ok, they would be learning about Imps today. Syrah looked down at her textbook; Imps of Britain and Ireland, useful. Mellowrose instructed the students to read pages fifteen and sixteen, but he only paused briefly before continuing his lecture on Imps. Did he mean read those pages as homework? Syrah scribbled a note to make sure she didn't forget. Even if it wasn't homework it was clearly something the Professor wanted them to know and understand.
Imps

Danger Level: XX
Color: Grey
Height: Six Inches
Features: Bald Heads, Long Ears
Location: Britain and Ireland
As she looked at the illustration in the textbook, Syrah was shocked. She didn't have a clear image of Imps in her head before, but she figured they would be colorful and lively, kind of like fairies from children's books - just without wings. Instead these things were, although tiny, grey and dead looking. No hair or clothing, distended stomachs. Gross. And apparently with a double X danger rating, they were quite a nuisance. She wondered what they did to make them so annoying.

Her question was quickly answered with the 'mellow' Professors next sentence. Apparently they enjoy throwing things at people. Such a weird thing to do, what did they get out of that? Before she knew it Professor Mellowrose had assigned another two pages of reading, without skipping a beat in between. Syrah scribbled the pages down next to the others, to remind herself to read them after class when she got back to her Common Room.
Imps enjoying throwing objects at passersby.
Will stop when faced with an initial retaliation.
As a boy in her class described his encounter with the Imps, Syrah giggled to herself. It seemed so silly. She understood they were annoying but they didn't seem to be dangerous, just unappealing. Why were they rated XX? She thought they were at least have to be able to hard people for that kind of rating. But she didn't think they were big enough to throw something that would end up being painful.

Mellowrose continued his lecturing of Imps, until, suddenly, he ordered all textbooks to be closed. Yes! Syrah thought, excitedly, now was the time for the practical - they get to learn a spell! Syrah paid strict attention, ignoring the Slytherin by her side who seemed rather bored with everything. Maybe they were going to be able to practice defending themselves from real Imps! Maye Professor Mellowrose would release them into the classroom and the students would have to fight them off with some spell he was about to announce! thoughts swirled in her head, shaking it, she tried to calm down and pay attention. This was important.

"Periculum!" The professor announced, wand pointed straight up in the air. Bright sparks instantly shot from the wand and high into the hair, thankfully the ceiling was rather high or else Syrah would be worried the sparks might hit the roof. Right before they would have, the sparks blew up and turned red like fireworks, leaving behind a pretty trail of red smoke as the fire slowly faded. It as basically a magical version of a muggle flare that Syrah had seen in some movies growing up. That's right, Mellowrose did say this spell was for calling for help... She had gotten a little too carried away with imagining battle with tiny Imps. They weren't even learning a spell like that. This was strictly for calling in aid. Syrah sighed, but quickly and forcefully perked herself back up. This as still a spell. And it was still useful. So she would learn it.
Periculum:
Aid spell that throws red sparks into the air.
Action: Point wand at desired direction
Incantation: "Periculum"
For the rest of the class period she and her other classmates repeatedly shouted "Periculum!" into the air above their heads. It was a good few minutes before anyone had eve any tiny sparks shoot out, and when the first one did, Syrah glared in jealousy. Shaking her head at her wand she narrowed her eyes. "Periculum!" She shouted, frustrated. Nothing. Over and over she tried. She attempted to calm herself down only to get riled up again when that didn't work. Finally she stopped. Lowered her wand and took a deep breath. Perhaps if she imagined actually needing to use it.

In her mind she threw up a scene, much like the boy had described earlier. She was in a train station, looking for her remembrall that she ironically misplaced. When all of a sudden, BAM, something hit her on the side of the head. It flashed red, and she recognized the object in question as her remembrall. Holding her head and looking around she noticed a chuckling little Imp. Glaring she thought ti was over, until more and more appeared and stared chucking tiny pebbles at her. BAM, BAM, BAM. Panicking she raised her wand, she needed help! "Periculum!" She shouted.

She was yanked out of her imagination by tiny white sparks jutting from the tip of her wand! Yes! She did it! Well, kind of. The sparks rose in the air only a bit before slowly falling to the ground and going out. They did not blow up or turn red. But the point was she made sparks! She was on her way. She would just have to practice more and more.
