Bleaching can definitely damage your hair/dry it out, so yeah, if you can find alternatives that might be less harmful then definitely smart.

One of my friends ended up losing most of her hair because she bleached it herself. She had really pretty strawberry blonde hair too.

Does not help that she did it the week before graduation, she was so devastated. She has not bleached or dyed her hair since.
