Lesson One - Potions Closed

Syrah walked into her first Potions class of First Year confidant. In her pack she had packed everything she might need. Although the young student doubted that in the very first lesson the teacher would be allowing them to create an actual potion, she still had on hand her vials, scales and standard issue size 2 tin cauldron, just in case, and of course her Magical Drafts and Potions textbook. Although she was anxious to begin creating potions, she knew that, unlike Syrah herself, most students probably have never even seen a potion created, let alone made one themselves. Syrah was lucky, at least in this subject, she had a bit of prior experience from her mother, a Master Potioneer and so she may have been more than appropriately confidant for this class.

She walked in rather early. Slightly less than half the class was already in attendance. The Potions class was in the basement, the same floor as her Slytherin Common Room and Dormitories, so it took almost no time at all to get from her bed to her classroom. The room itself was cold and seemingly damp. It was all grey, just like every bit of the castle, except for the strange colors of ingredients and already crafted potions coming from the shelves and cases lining the walls. The desks were double, so two students would fit at a time. She knew from hearing about it from other students, that most potion making lessons were done in pairs, thus the double desks making sense. It also gave more room for the cauldrons and ingredients to spread out.

The teacher stood at the front of the class and as it filled up she began writing on the chalkboard, using her wand to move the writing utensil instead of having to touch it herself. Miss Ethel, she wrote and said, greeting the class in Spanish? Syrah thought that was strange since they were in Scotland -  and also should she be called Professor Ethel, instead of Miss? Syrah wondered if the teacher would mind if she addressed her as Professor instead. There was also the fact that Ethel was a substitute for their actual Professor? On the very first day? Wonder who the actual teacher was...

Miss Ethel continued speaking and as she did Syrah quickly took out a notebook and quill and ink. She was prepared to take vigorous notes even before the teacher address that as a requirement. Potions is a class she would be taking until Fifth Year... Wow.

Lesson One - Potions Closed
Syrah opened her Magical Drafts and Potions textbook to page 18, as instructed. When Miss Ethel asked her first question to the class; the definition of a potion, Syrah's hand shot up. Unfortunately she was not called on. Some boy more to the right of her was called on and Ethel accepted his answer. Syrah sighed, her answer would have been better - more textbook. But she took notes anyway as Professor Ethel began to lecture.

Syrah watched as Miss Ethel took out her own cauldron. Hers was copper - Syrah wondered why it was so important that the student's were tin. Does the type of metal really matter that much? As she introduced the cauldron, Professor Ethel asked the class why one's wand is also an important part of potion making. Syrah knew this answer and well and her hand went up again. But alas, she was again, not picked. A girl in the back row this time and Syrah appreciated her answer more than the boy's. As the student spoke Syrah felt for her wand inside her robes. She was still not very used to carrying it around, but had thankfully, not yet forgotten it somewhere.

Syrah did not own some of these materials and she got worried for a moment. But them she realized the classroom would probably provide the missing materials for her, or else they would have been listed as required on her Hogwarts acceptance letter. Professor Ethel continued with the lesson as Syrah scribbled her notes, trying to keep up.

Miss Ethel was a strange one, Syrah thought. Her English was not perfect and her accent seemed Italian, yet she spoke some Spanish mixed in with her English. Did Italians speak some Spanish or were the two languages just similar enough that Syrah was mixing them up? She didn't really know much about either language or culture, but the bits of Spanish/Italian were kind of annoying her.

Lesson One - Potions Closed
Syrah watched in excitement as Professor Ethel pulled at three finished potions and laid them on the table in front of the class. They were each different colors, blue, orange and green. Syrah perked up a bit, very interested in what those potions might be for.

The first potion was the Cure for Boils. Syrah had seen this one when she flipped through her textbook earlier. It was a simple potion, taught to first years. Syrah was sure her class would be making it eventually. The professor mentioned that this is a physical potion, and another commonly known, though much more advanced physical potion was the Polyjuice Potion, a potion that completely changed the user appearance. Although very interest, Syrah knew she wouldn't be making that potion for a few years at least.

The second potion Miss Ethel showed the class was much more interesting than a Cure for Boils. This one was the Forgetfulness potion. Syrah could think of numerous uses for this one and she smiled a bit mischievously. Though the smile faded when Ethel mentioned that it was a complicated potion, so they would probably not be learning it this year. Bummer. Anyway this was called a Mental Potion, a potion effecting the mind.

The third and final potion Miss Ethel presented to the class was the Herbicide potion, nothing very interesting there, to Syrah at least. She was never really interested in Herbology, which is what this poition would be used in. But it was important to understand that is was an Environmental potion, a potion that is applied to the environment, rather than a person.
Physical Potions: Potions that have a direct effect on the appearance of the user.
Mental Potions: Potions that have a direct effect on the mind of the user.
Environmental Potions: Potions that have a direct effect on the environment.

* The more a potion is drunk, the stronger the effect. Side effects are possible in this situation.
Syrah never knew that there were different categories of potions. Though, looking back on the mini lessons her mother gave her, she could place each of her mothers potions into each category accurately as they were not difficult to distinguish. Syrah could see the importance, though, of the categories and was happy she learned something new in this first lesson. She was afraid she would already know everything.

Before she knew it, class was over. She didn't even realize it until the student sitting next to her stood up. Syrah was still taking notes, but she heard in slight disappointment as Professor Ethel dismissed them, with a reminder to do the homework. Sighing, Syrah packed up to head back to the Common Room, picking up her homework on the way out.
