An Unexpected Meeting pv Roseann Parker

Soon to meet @Roseann Parker
Classes had just finished for the day and Rayne was so relieved. They loved Hogwarts and magic and learning, but sometimes it could just be exhausting. With no prior knowledge of magic, or the Wizarding World, it was certainly a shock to be suddenly plunged into a universe where a wand was as common as a pencil, and owls were used to deliver mail instead of people. Everything could be a bit overwhelming.

Rayne knew they had a load of homework to do, but that could wait for now. The day wasn't cold, for this time of year, but the wind held a bitter chill. The clouded skies guarded the sun, forbidding it to offer warmth, in combat to the frequent, harsh jabs of cool wind. The courtyard was relatively empty, most people apparently deciding to stay inside.

Rayne ambled peacefully across the paved floor, listening to the wind as it murmured secrets to whoever cared to listen. They sank onto a bench, pulling their yellow striped tie off as they sat, glad to finally rest. It was an odd atmosphere, slightly grey, possibly eerie, but Rayne found nothing more comforting. They took the opportunity to look back upon memories. They played images if their twins laughing through their mind, like pressing play on a video. A sad smile played across their face, they hadn't herd their twins laugh in a long time now. The two girls had become distant over the past few months. It was ok though, Rayne knew it was part of growing up.

They longed for company, whether someone they were familiar with or a complete stranger. Whether it meant a heartfelt discussion or just a while sitting in silence. A faint howl of laughter momentarily tugged on their attention. Probally coming from a distant common room. A determined shaft of sunlight struggled through the thick shield of clouds. It was a strangely beautiful sight.

Today was just another dreary Monday for Roseann. She was walking the school grounds, her feet trudging lazily through the snow. She was tired of all the work she had gotten today, and all the walking. Oh, the walking! Her feet started aching after only a couple of hours. She needed a place to sit, but most areas were either taken by other students or completely covered in snow. There was a single bench that wasn't completely occupied, as there was someone there. They were a Hufflepuff.

Rose approached the bench and sat down, not saying a word. She figured that she didn't need to start a conversation if it wasn't necessary, because it is very awkward when she tries to initiate a conversation. She turned and looked at the person. They were pretty, and Rose was surprised she had never seen them around before. She turned away before they noticed that she was staring, and she pulled out a book from her bag. She began reading, glancing occasionally at them. She couldn't bring herself to start a conversation with them, and she was hoping they would start one. She patiently waited for what seemed like hours, reading her book and glancing.

First impressions with @Roseann Parker
Rayne watched out of the corner of their eye as a girl trudged through the snow towards them. She was pretty, with gorgeous red hair and freckles. She wore a red tie, Gryffindoor. Rayne observed. A trail of footprints patterned the snow in her wake, each tread with a soft crunch. Rayne's heart jumped with excitement and the idea of conversation as the stranger sat. She looked kind.

Rayne could feel the eyes of the girl flicker to them occasionally. Rayne was desperate for the stranger to start a conversation. They had an instant liking to her, a feeling of strange trust. Just as Rayne was about to speak, the Gryfindoor pulled out a book and started reading. Surely it would be rude to disturb someone's reading for a conversation.

However, to Rayne's relief, they could still feel the student's eyes on them. It was a strange atmosphere, both willing the other to speak first. Rayne wasn't sure how to start the conversation. A joke, a witty comment, perhaps a sarcastic reference to the girl's secret observations. No. That would only end in an awkward encounter. Instead, they settled on a compliment.
'Hey,' they said quietly. 'I'm sorry to disturb you from your reading, but I think your really pretty.' They realised how this may sound. 'Not in a weird way or anything,' Rayne added hurriedly.

Rose looked at them, flustered. "Um...thanks. You too," she said, instantly regretting it. It was such a strange thing to say to a complete stranger, but it already happened, so she figured she would roll with it. She took a better look at them, noticing their green hair and glasses. They certainly were pretty, there was no doubt about it. Rose turned back to her book, thoughts bouncing around her skull.

Was that too weird? Am I weird for saying that? Did I ruin the conversation?

Rose spent a good couple of minutes alone with her thoughts, drowning out the rest of the world as she endlessly pondered her life choices up until that point. To other people, she simply looked like she was staring into space. But in her mind, it was like a battlefield of intrusive thoughts. She finally snapped out of it, turned to the Hufflepuff student, and said, "My name is Roseann, but you can call me Rose, I guess. What's your name?"

As soon as she said it, she felt as though something was wrong with the way she said it. She probably should've just gotten up and left the poor student alone. She again fell into her semi-catatonic state, thinking about what she just said.

Introductions with @Roseann Parker
Rayne smiled at the girl's slightly flustered response. The entire situation, the silences, the unsure conversation was so awkward it was laughable. It was the kind of silence that Rayne loved or hated, they couldn't quite decide. The girl's voice was nice though, soothing. It was the voice of people you hear on meditation apps, or audio books. Rayne liked audio books. On nights where sleep was hiding, and their focus thin, they often played stories from their phone to ease them into the land of dreams.

After a pause, Rayne was tugged out of their own mind by the sound of the girl's voice. She was introducing herself as Roseann, or Rose. A memory, deep in Rayne's mind stirred, but they couldn't tell why.
'Rayne.' They replied with a reassuring smile.
Why was the name Rose so familiar to them?
'I think I've seen you around in classes before, are you a first year?' They asked, still trying to retrieve the lost memory.

Their friend from long ago had been called Rose, that was the memory. She had the longest hair Rayne had ever seen, all glossy and blonde and shiny. They had been awfully close, until Rose had to move to a foreign country somewhere in Europe. Rose was the first person Rayne was ever friends with, making them want to trust this Gryfindoor even more.
