xxxxIt seemed as if fortune was on Maggie's side today. Her spell hit Draven straight in the face, like a flung pie in a bland sketch comedy show, rendering him sightless. Yes! Maybe dueling really was her true calling, and she was totally meant to do this for the rest of her entire life, and her team would emerge victorious, and--

Oh.

Liana Kerr was an early target. Hit by four spells at once, it seemed as if the other players saw Liana as an early threat. Maybe that would placate her, make her feel better. Seeing as her loss in the last round rendered her basically silent as if she were a ghost floating around the school. In Maggie's mind, it had been pretty dramatic. After all, the Wargames wasn't even an official duel, and any loss in it wasn't a true reflection of what kind of person you were. How smart you were. Liana was the smartest person she knew, and one round of a student-created event wouldn't change that.

Unfortunately, Liana didn't see it that way, and Maggie figured that a loss in these games would lead to another long silence from the ginger.

"Brush it off, Li! Don't even worry about it!" Yep! Liana Kerr was a-okay.

Nearly half the school year had concluded already. Time certainly seemed to pass at an alarmingly quick rate. The new year had brought with it a renewed sense of hope for some students; fresh slates in classes for others; and ever expansive depths of knowledge for all. For some, it seemed the most logical course to test their new-found prowess was in games not so dissimilar to those held by the SWAG club. As Evelynn made her way to the appointed local once again at the behest of one young Mister Hui, she couldn't at all blame the participants for such enthusiasm. She had been very much the same in her first year, and part of her almost wished she could be a peer instead of a mentor, that she might join them in these self-imposed practical tests.

Instead, her role was to remain that of the vigilant observer: to ensure they remain—relatively and reasonably—safe during their little games; to monitor for misdemeanours; to intervene and administer assistance as necessary. It was a role she didn't at all mind. On the one hand, it allowed her the opportunity to acquaint herself with the newer students. On the other, it served as something of a mental review to witness these spells put into use. And every now and then, a student would make rather clever employ of a particular spell that she was more than happy to add to her own repertoire.

Just as the last time, Evelynn had arrived sufficiently early to situate herself unhinderingly to one side of the space. Unlike her debut to the last event, the prefect had elected to showcase one of her fashion pieces. Ahead of the upcoming spring trends, she had donned a sleeveless pencil dress with bare shoulders, patterned with black and white asymmetric blocked patterning. Black knit nylons served to marry the transition between winter and spring and her usual brown leather riding boots had been given a midnight makeover to match the ensemble. A splash of colour was afforded by an amethyst stone hanging at her sternum from a golden chain; and black finger gloves added a little class to finish it off.

As the first years filed in, grey eyes the colour of the calm before a storm swept across the young faces, taking stock of their mettle. She was pleased to see Barfield among their numbers once again. Although the girl had been among the first to be eliminated in the first game, she—evidently—had not let that dull the shine of her determination. Evelynn inwardly hoped to see her and her team last longer this time. There were a number of other new faces as well: Ashwood no longer lingered on the outskirts this time; Argentum of the alchemy club had joined the fray as well; as had a number of others with whom the prefect wasn't terribly familiar. Several familiar faces had returned as well.

"I will be wagering on Barfield's group this time. The one with the Ashwood girl as well." As the game began, Evelynn had casually sidled her way to Mister Hui's side, angling her head to him with the softly uttered comment. "What say you, mn? Shall we wager yet again?"

After the chaos of the first round, the duelists seemed to take a moment to consolidate.

Hunter putting out the flames on his team-mate, while Cody doing the same for himself. Draven even took the time to cast a smokescreen onto the battlefield to try and give his team a moment to recover from the chaos of the first round.

But not everyone was taking defensive actions. In a spell reminiscent of the last event, Maggie shot a spell at Avery, who managed to dance out of the way. Avery and Vale, meanwhile, both sent spells at Hunter. Hunter, in a display of surprising agility, managed to swerve out of the way of Avery’s spell, and only barely got clipped by the one sent by Vale. Perhaps Miss Kerr had spent time teaching her team how to get out of the way of spells?

Finally, in an act that screamed of co-ordination but could not possibly be, Della and the unexpected participant Clair both sent spells Liana’s way. The prodigal Slytherin, perhaps tired of dodging, activated her Protego rune. Clair’s Dancing feet rebounded with surprising accuracy and struck Della, leaving her feet tapping in a mad staccato. Della’s spell, meanwhile shot wide of Clair, almost striking Draven instead.

Ming raised his eyebrow at the efficiency of the activated shield charm. Clearly, Miss Kerr had spent more than a little time preparing for this event. Ming had envisioned the Shield Charm as a rune of last resort due to the risk of the spell rebounding and hitting one’s teammates. But Miss Kerr had gone and shown exactly how precisely the shield could be wielded. It was, frankly, impressive. But could she continuously hold against the sustained onslaught by both the other teams?

Ming was broken out of his musings by the comment by Prefect Decipio. A wager? It seemed much too early to make any sort of reasonable prediction, but he'd be damned if he let his uncertainty show. "Well, Mr. Mirador has piqued my interest of late. Perhaps he will manage to surprise us, much like how Hawkins did before."

xxxxHunter looked over at his teammate, he could see the flames brighter than the very sun. He pointed his wand towards her to place out the flames. His eyes still stung as he looked away, but as soon as the flames extinguished his sight began to heal. He was glad to see his teammate was no longer on fire but was a bit surprised to now realize she was dancing.

Despite being thrown aback by Liana's quick and smooth moves, Hunter could feel his instincts play again. One? No, two. He could hear spells coming in his direction, but he had to act fast. He turned to see a spell from Avery and Vale heading directly in his direction. In a quick burst of an agile movement, he swerved himself backward to dodge Avery's but wasn't fast enough to adjust for Vales. Luckily, he was fast enough to prevent himself from catching on fire. He looked over at the two of them. Hunter was unsure how to feel about Avery Chen having cast at him, was it payback for his misconducted verdimillious? As for Vale, it was sort of expected and unexpected. Hunter knew if he got too close to Ashwood fire he'd eventually end up burning himself.

Honestly, Hunter was getting a bit tired, and so far not much had occurred to him yet. He wondered if all the moving around was tiring him, or if he was just bored. It's only been a couple of spells, but so far he hadn't gotten to know much about the people around him so far. He looked between Avery and Vale, "I know you two went to the ball together but is attacking the same target together really necessary?" He dusted his shoulders off, still feeling a singed feeling from Vale's incendio, "A bit embarrassing to have missed your spell like that, don't you agree Mr.Chen? Especially in front of Ms. Ashwood," Now Hunter was speaking with some audacity and confidence in his voice. It was very unlike him, had he finally snapped? "You've gained the control part and lost the chaos Mr.Chen, unlike Mr. Stevenson," Hunter looked back towards Cody, seeing he was putting himself out of the very spell he cast on himself. Hunter spoke loud enough, he wanted to make sure everyone could hear him boast, "You got control, but you can't aim. Rather unwise to aim at me don't you think Mr.Chen? About as unwise as Ms.Kelly back during the feast. Attacked her housemate and another house, very unwise indeed. A tad annoying don't you agree?," Hunter's memory of the event with Juniper Kelly was still clear. It seems he was still holding a grudge towards her. He wondered if talking bad about a housemate was normal, or unusual. perhaps Clair could tell him afterward. He also wondered if anybody here cared that he was talking to Avery, Cody, and Juniper like that. He had an idea to know,

"I'll make it easy, I'll give you one chance at a 2nd try if you will. I won't move, I won't dodge. Give Liana a break, like housemates and friends. There's a Ravenclaw in front of you having fun with mockery," Hunter sat down on the floor, legs crossed with a slightly blank expression while looking around. Almost as if his confidence over the other students was large enough to fill the entire arena. His eyes searched towards the other students, wondering what their next moves were bound to be. He was mocking them with an opportunity in which he was putting himself at a disadvantage. With that, a sudden burst of smoke hit him in the face, once again bringing him to an almost blinding state.

The initial onslaught of spells was overwhelming. All Liana could think of was finding even a short respite to collect her thoughts, and put the fire out without being set on it again. She stepped into the left-side runic circle, which immediately lit up. The magic shield came up not a moment later, which was just in time, because two spells came her way.

One, quite predictably, was from Barfield. It was very probable that the vengeful kitty would keep on casting spells her way until the bitter end. It was odd, really, because Chen had cast at her as well, as many times as Liana had, and even teased her - all that without having even been provoked by a single spell sent his way. Allying with the Asian boy had to mean that this was a feminine jealousy thing. The redhead had bested her, and now the poor albino was trying to prove to the entire uncaring world that she was the toughest girl around. Maybe she even had a crush on Chen - that would explain the unwillingness to turn against his team, and the possible anger at being knocked out by another female while he was watching. This whole tween drama thing was not something Liana cared about at all; nor did she particularly care about Barfield and her sad little revenge. It was, however, quite satisfying to see the beam of her spell get deflected and veer off towards another team. A pity it didn't hit anyone.

The second spell came from Fernandez, and also bounced off the transparent wall protecting Liana. Having witnessed Barfield's insane luck in the previous game, the young Slytherin was almost shocked to see her fail to step out of the incoming attack, and instead succumb to uncontrolled leg spasms. Karma, eyyy?

Her attention was soon diverted by a thick smoke rising from the direction of Chen's team. She just managed to see Mirador holding up his wand before the darkness became too thick to see much further than a few yards in front of her. The rune under her feet was slowly fading now, indicating the end of its protection. It had been enough - nobody hurt her for a dozen precious seconds, and the flames that had engulfed her were gone. "Thanks, Hunter," she said quickly, not taking her eyes off the swirling wall of fumes in front of her, trying to be ready for any incoming spells.

Hunter was being quite talkative. If Fumos gave them any cover from attacks at all, he was definitely giving it all up by betraying his location. Worse, he actually sat down, teasing the opponents, drawing fire to to himself. Was this an attempt to save his captain from more attacks, or just another sign of Ravenclaw eccentricity? Judging by his words, it was probably the former, which made her feel rather guilty. Nobody should be defending her with their own body just because she sucked at dodging spells and apparently was hated by her peers. At this moment she really wished she hadn't used the Protego, so she could try and push Hunter into its circle before he got slaughtered.

After Clair had casted her spell, a rather Un prepared dancing feet spell, she watched as it bounced away from her target and then hit Della, oops, oh well!
She smiled "well not who i wanted, but i still hit someone so that's good!" She muttered to no one in piacular, if anyone heard, well fun for them! They now had witnessed Clair talking to herself, and surprisingly she was not talking about home work or her animals, or even her friends! Which was she mostly talked to her self about, she looked at Avery and Draven, both seemed to be fine, not hit by any spells, which was always a plus, this duel which she had jumped into to help seemed to be working out better then the first duel Clair had done, in which she had been teamed up with Delilah and against Henry and Lea, that duel had not started out well at all! But who knew? Clair had no idea how This duel had started out, she was not sure how far along in it was!
She sighed and prepared herself for the next round of blasting spells, her wand was at the ready and so was she!

xxxxAck! A miss. Predictable. Maggie wasn't the best spell-caster in the world, and never would be. She tried, really, and made up what she lacked in skill with her uncanny ability to dodge, but she really didn't consider herself a useful teammate. In fact, she did feel quite bad for Hunter and Liana, both, of who were talented wizards in their own right. At the very least, they cared about the games more than Maggie, who really cared more about having fun than winning.

Pity.

And it was made worse by the fact that Maggie felt a sort of rivalry with Avery. Nothing nefarious, no, as she did consider him a friend, but rather a sort of need to win when it came to the other Slytherin. Quidditch, dueling. Had to best him. Purely in friendly competition.

Luckily, though, Maggie wasn't targeted. Could not say the same for Kerr, though, who saw a number of spells sail her way. Shoot! Unfortunate!

And Argentum was entirely too loud for now. It was an attempt at taunting the others, yes, but also a betrayal of their hidden position. "Can it for, like, two seconds, Hunter!" Maggie called, all bark and no bite. There was no real heat or frustration behind her words. "Hey, how would you guys feel if I just became a cheerleader, eh? Boost that morale!"

As Clair leapt onto the piste, Avery thew a fist pump into the air. Crisis avoided, a new comrade to the rescue! "Loving that enthusiasm, Clair!" he shouted between spells. But, he really ought to get their new member up to speed, shouldn't he? “Let me tell you what’s up, but feel free to improvise along the way if you want to. Have fun!” He reached over with a few whispers to relay some brief strategy before turning his attention back to the fray, setting his sights on Hunter Argentum, the one who had pointed his wand at him during the previous round. He hoped for some payback, but his spell missed its mark. Seeing Vale's spell hit the same target brought him some consolation, at least. The corner of his lips lifted into a small grin at the thought that he and his friend were of similar mind in choosing their targets.

When Clair’s spell bounced off the Protego activated by Liana and deflected towards Della -- yikes! -- he winced visibly and managed a sheepish grin towards Vale’s team. Hopefully, the lioness wouldn’t take that as an invitation to attack his own team? Avery wasn’t sure how well his team would fare under the pressure of both opposing teams, who had strong casters who were either duelists themselves or had already participated in the first Wargames event. Looking at where Liana’s team had pointed their wands, and the fact that he had to dodge Maggie’s Dancing Feet Spell, it seemed that Liana’s team was targeting his team as well. His team would certainly have a tough time holding on if Della made a 180 from where they were pointing their wands now.

He flashed a quick thumbs-up towards Draven and his Smokescreen Spell. How timely of the boy it was, to choose that spell considering the situation they were in, like they had strategized beforehand. The small boy knew he could rely on Draven’s repertoire of spells and practiced casting. Although, some of the smoke inevitably appeared to spread more than originally intended.

Upon hearing Hunter’s words through the smoke, Avery's cheeks quickly reddened, despite his past belief that he didn’t care about dueling too much. One thing was clear, however: the Ravenclaw boy was surprisingly difficult to hit, and missing one spell after another wasn’t doing anything for Avery’s pride. Did Hunter practice his evasion techniques after being throttled by Juniper and Hildegard? And why did he mention Vale Ashwood, specifically? Perhaps it had gotten around that Vale was his Fall Ball date, and the Ravenclaw boy was jealous. Either way, Hunter was starting to get on his nerves; he had tried to help the Ravenclaw when he was ill, but interacting with Hunter seemed to naturally come with having to deal with his erratic delirium and eccentricity. Pressed on the matter, Avery had much difficulty holding back in the face of Hunter’s jibes. “Well, if you’re so eager for me to give it a try, I won’t say no! All you need to do is be prepared. Not sure how many others you’ve just offended, but you’re really asking for it now!” he cautioned, but the threat would hardly seem effective when chirped by Avery Chen, who was not used to trying to be intimidating. The small boy readied his wand – this was probably the best chance he was gonna get to sling a spell at Hunter Argentum, and it would be a waste not to take it. Becoming Vale’s potions partner only made Hunter really cocky, it seemed. Maybe he ought to show Hunter what’s what!

----What a mess everything was now. Liana was dancing, Hunter and Avery were dishing out insults and various other sort of comments. For what reason her name was being spewed about by them, is unknown to her. Maybe it was a boy thing to do. Prehaps she'll ask Liana and the other girls their thoughts later on it.

But most importantly, the whole area was filled by some harsh smoke. It made Vale even stop. Fumos, she remembered back in class. Effective at making targets hard to hit, and letting said targets flee from danger.

Sadly, Cody wasn't on fire anymore either. So Vale couldn't simply sit and watch her teammate burning alive for the time being.

Should she continue to fight? Is it safe to do so? Especially for her?

Maybe she should...

"Oh! A cockroach? Come back here, little fiend! You shall be the next sacrifice for Familia!" Vale's attention was suddenly caught by something she was sure moved beneath her, even through all the smoke. She made a crackle and moved down onto her knees. She searched gingerly on the ground for the supposed pest of a bug. It was like a day of fortune for her, her smile wrapped across her face as she explored the stones beneath her very knees.

Vale could be heard singing to herself as she explored the ground, uncaring of the immediate danger that she may have put herself in despite all the smoke in the area. Oh, the glories and possible setbacks of being fearless Vale, on a mission to feed her pet spider, always greedy for its next victims.

...Does that mean that Vale will need to get a leash for Familia once she's a big, hungry guard spider? How well would Familia even take such news?

The boy cast the extinguishing charm on himself, hating that he got hit with the Incendio spell. Where was his brain at? Such a horrible attempt to escape that facade, and now, he had to waste his turn getting the fire to go away. And... it worked, but Cody hated himself for allowing such things as that to happen.

His eyes looked around, found Draven, and his mind started to wander.

Cody felt as if he somehow owed Draven for his unfortunates... Draven didn't have to go through so much bad luck, except be targeted somehow by the Dancing Feet charm. A pitiful look struck Cody, and he decided to go over and attempt to woo him, intentionally, he wasn't going to be romantic, just to try to get something his way. "Thanks Draven, for cursing me. I thought it was Vale for a while, turns out, it must've been someone who was with my cousin. How dare you?" He said, but only whispering so no one else could hear him.

Now ready for the next round, his wand was drawn. He was going to do something he hoped many wouldn't anticipate. Could they? Could Cody be that predictible? Whatever it was... he owed Draven, and well- perhaps it was treason- that his Fumos hit Vale. Was that on purpose? Only time could tell, or his smirk. In which case... he was smirking.
