No one ever wanted, or willing embraced embarrassment. This being especially true for the young Gryffindor who was confined to the Hospital Wing while she recovered. It was downright embarrassing as to the reason why and how she had ended up in here too. In fact, every single time she thought about it, she cringed.

Lizzy had been so excited for her very first duel. She knew she and Youssuf Baid, her partner, would most likely lose because of their older, and overall better opponents, but she had been ridiculously optimistic and cheerful about it. She had not foreseen it ending the way it had though. Casting and missing a spell directed at Dmitri Jones, he and his partner, Opeila Winters, had retaliated by casting Ventus at the Gryffindor duo.

The spell had knocked her off her feet and flung her clear across the room. From what others had told her, she had hit her head on some random object, which had rendered her unconscious. All she remembered though, was flying across the Duelling Room and then having everything go black. She had been taken to the Hospital Wing immediately, and when she had woken up, all that there was to do was stew in her own misery at the failure.

There was no question about continuing on with duelling of course. She may have been completely embarrassed, but she loved what she had been conscious for. Lizzy would just have to learn from her mistake and carry on. Her next match would be better, she was sure of it.

The best part of the duel by far had been Youssuf giving Jones the finger at his overconfident and smug attitude. Lizzy herself had replied rather snappily at him, but of course, actions spoke louder than words sometimes. That had been one of those times. Lizzy propped herself up in the bed and continued to think about the duel.

Empty footsteps echoed through the corridor as Pax walked (almost ominously) towards the Hospital Wing. Everybody else was outside enjoying their free day, but Pax had decided to try to be nice, deciding instead to head down to Hospital Wing.

The door creaked open as Pax nudged it open with their elbow and made their way over to one of the beds near the other end of the room. In it lay a young Gryffindor female, sitting up and looking mildly bored.

"Hey," Pax smiled at the girl awkwardly. "I'm-uh-Pax, I'm a fellow first-year Gryffindor, also in Wampus Wing. I saw you get knocked out the other day during that duel with those Slytherins, and I have to say, you did really well. Except for getting knocked out. But you can't have it all, can you? I-uh-also brought you a gift..."

Pax reached into their pocket to get out the peace offering they had brought, and then their eyes widened. "However, it seems that I have misplaced the chocolate frog I was going to give you. Awfully sorry about that. I was going to give it to you as a peace offering so you'd like me more, because almost everyone likes chocolate. Unless you don't. And then...well good thing I lost it!"

Pax giggled awkwardly, realising that they were probably talking about 100 mph. "I'm so sorry if I'm talking too much, I just can't stop myself sometimes, I just keep going and going and going and-oh, I'm doing it again! I am so sorry, I'm just going to sit here and shut up."

The door to the Hospital Wing creaked as it swung open and someone walked in. The person's eyes found Lizzy's almost immediately and walked over to her bed. They introduced themself as Pax, a fellow first year Gryffindor. She vaguely remembered seeing Pax around Wampus Wing, the dormitory they shared, but they hadn't really ever spoken.

"Nice to meet you Pax. I'm Lizzy Solace," she said with a friendly smile. "You don't have to say I did well, I know it was...rough." She thought it was nice of Pax to say that, even though it wasn't completely true.

"I-uh-also brought you a gift..." Pax stuttered. Well that was certainly nice, Lizzy thought to herself as Pax searched through their pockets. "Don't worry about it! she said reassuringly as Pax seemed to panic at the missing object. "I find it nice of you just coming here. I mean, you didn't have to seeing as I barely know you. What I'm trying to say is, it was nice of you to just come."

She was shaking her head inwardly, she seemed to be having the meeting new people troubles again. "It's fine, I don't mind your talking. I don't do well with meeting new people, so I suppose I could say I understand."

Pax breathed a sigh of relief, hearing Lizzy's words. It was comforting to know they weren't the only one that struggled to make new friends here. That was something that had been bugging them for a while. It made them seem pretty pathetic.

"Thanks. Some people can find my talking annoying. Which I can understand. You don't want someone jabbering on and on all the time, do you? And I find it hard to believe that you don't get on well with people, considering you've been really nice to a random stranger that turned up to visit you out of the blue."

As the conversation awkwardly slowed to halt, Pax fiddled with the edge of their sleeve, scrambling through their brain to find a topic to talk about. Awkward conversations were pretty much one of the worst thing that could exist.

"So.....do you keep up with quidditch much? I'm a Holyhead Harpies fan myself. I'd love to play for them one day. That's the dream at least. Otherwise, I might want to be an auror. Or dragon tamer. I'm not really sure, in all honesty. But something that keeps you thinking and moving, you know? Nothing boring and still, like those muggle jobs in receptions and such. That would be a nightmare. Sorry, I've gone on an tangent again."

"I get on alright with people I know, it's people I'm just meeting for the first time. I'm usually never able to get through a normal conversation without stuttering or something because I don't know them that well. It's downright terrifying," she said with a grin. I mean honestly, who invented the awkwardness of the human race? Lizzy would like to sit them down and have a long talk with them that included a few choice words.

Speaking of awkwardness, the conversation between her and Pax had stopped, leaving them silently fidgeting, looking for a new topic to start. The inconvenience of the pause was really wearing on her. Besides, Lizzy couldn't even leave the room if something happened. She was stuck in this bed. Not that Pax was annoying or anything, but if the silence dragged on much longer, it would become unbearable.

"Quidditch?" Pax had thankfully started up the talk again. "Well, I'm muggle-born, so I didn't know about Quidditch until last fall. I keep up with the school teams though."

The discussion moved to job aspirations, reminding Lizzy of a similar talk she had had with a student from Mahoutokoro. "I think I'd want to be an Auror, or maybe a Hogwarts professor, a writer would be cool too though." She laughed, "At least we've still got six years to decide! And I told you, I don't mind your talking. It keeps the conversation interesting."

"Oh, really? I wouldn't have guessed, since you seem really good at magic. Although maybe it just comes naturally to some people."

Pax tapped their feet in an odd pattern on the ground. They were really starting to like this girl. She seemed so nice and willing to talk, not like many others Pax had tried to talk to.

"So what was your childhood like then? Seeing as you grew up with muggle parents? Even though I'm a halfblood, my mum knew about magic since she married my dad, so they had a sense that me and my brothers would grow up to be magical. Did you go to public school? You see, I was homeschooled. Maybe that's why my people skills aren't so great. I'm just used to being cut off by a shout from my brothers."

"Also, can I just say that you don't have to put up with me if you don't want to. I can leave if you need to get some rest, or are just tired of me in general. I know some people find me irritating in that sense. You wouldn't believe how many times I've tried to come here and talk to people, and then been told to go away. Thats why I bring peace offerings now. At least, I do usually..."

Pax rubbed their neck awkwardly, still feeling guilty about the misplaced treat.

Lizzy cringed inwardly when Pax said they wouldn't have guessed she was muggle-born based on how good she was at magic. Pax seemed nice, and she didn't want to wreck a new friendship by taking what was probably just a harmless comment. Instead of saying anything, she just smiled in a friendly manner.

"My childhood was just like any other person's childhood I expect," Lizzy began. "Just without magic, not even the knowledge of magic. The first time I accidentally used magic was when I fell out of a tree when I was young. I was super high up, and when I fell I got back up without a scratch." Lizzy remembered how her brother looked astounded when her younger self fell from that height and just bounded back up happily.

"I did go to a public school. It all went really fast though, so I guess an advantage of homeschool would be you can go at your own pace." Pax began to say they could go for the what, third time since they had met.

"Pax, I told you, I like your company. All I've had to do for the past few days is rest. I'm glad for the change in activity. Besides, if you leave all I'll have to do is think about the failed duel." She had told Pax this in about a million different ways so far, they had better not make it a million and one!

Pax grinned at the girl. Hopefully, she was a fellow adventurer like them!"Oh, climbing trees is so fun! I wish I lived more in the countryside, then I'd get more chance to explore. Instead I live in the heart of the capital."

Pax shrugged after hearing about public school. I mean, there were perks from both, they supposed. "I suppose so, but there are other things that I missed out on. Like, when I first came to Hogwarts, I struggled to make friends, but I thought I was super good at socialising and making friends. I guess that's a thing you don't learn in homeschooling."

Pax blushed. They should stop mentioning it, but part of them still felt bad. Maybe they should stop the guilty thing, that could be the thing that pushes people away. Ooh, they shouldn't go down that rabbit hole. "So, apart from duelling, what else do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Do you enjoy any other sports at all?"

Pax rummaged through their brain quickly to find any muggle sport they could begin to talk about. "Ah! My mum used to tell me about a sport she would play with her brothers when she was younger. You would kick a ball around and try to get into a net at either end...ah what's the name? Do you know what I mean? I'm not the best at explaining things. But yeah, I've never really played many other sports beside quidditch. My mum was very accommodating when she married into the family, she pretty much left her entire muggle life behind to help raise three magical kids."

Lizzy smiled, "I don't think I could ever live in the city. There is too much going on there, and besides, I like the peace and nature atmosphere of the countryside. How did you like living there in the capital?" She was happy that they were both still engaged in the conversation. It was nice to finally have somebody to talk to, after the days she had spent alone.

"I suppose that is something you can't pick up being homeschooled. Then again though, I'm a complete mess usually during first meetings and such, so maybe it depends more on your personality than your schooling." Truthfully, this was one of her better first meetings, the last one had turned into a complete disaster.

"Let's see, apart from duelling I like to read mostly. Read, write, and explore! I've never really seen what else I would need besides those things. What about you? What are some of your interests outside of Quidditch?" she asked.

Pax was attempting to tell her about a muggle sport that sounded a lot like soccer, but apparently they couldn't remember what it was called. "You mean soccer?" she tried to help out. "I've only ever done duelling because, as I said, first meetings are not my thing. Not a lot of people were willing to pass the ball to me in any sport, and you can't exactly play a sport when you're invisible to the rest of your team." She sometimes did play baseball, but just with her family. The best times were when her cousins came over, and they all had a big game of baseball. More people made it more fun to play.

"Well, I suppose living in the capital's alright really. It's closer to my dad's work, but not so great for an adventurer's spirit. But I suppose that it does match my busy nature, at least that's what my dad says." Pax smiled, happy that a conversation was picking up.

"Yeah, I suppose. When I've met others, some people say that I can come on too strong. First impressions aren't necessarily my forte." Pax rubbed their neck awkwardly, hoping that this first impression was alright.

"God, interests outside of quidditch? Let me think. I mean, I do own a lot of books, and I've read most of them, so I guess reading as well. I debated a lot with my brothers too, and that was fun. But quidditch is definitely one of my main focuses." Pax couldn't help but grin at the thought of quidditch. They just adored the sport.

"Yes! Soccer! That's it!" Pax cheered triumphantly. "Oh, I'm sorry about that. I'm sure you're great at sports, maybe everyone else was just jealous of your natural talent. Have you been in the hospital wing long? It must be pretty tiring sat in here alone, all day long, with no entertainment or company. Do you get visited by your other friends often?"
