The mad rush for quaffle points seemed to have dwindled and Atlas found herself more useful in a life-saving role. In particular, she wanted to make sure that Ethen didn't plummet to the ground...again. She kept an eye on the Slytherin team, knowing that they would inevitably launch their attack.

Sure enough, it began. Atlas knew that Ethen would be their likely target so she got ready to dive if it came to it. It didn't take long before Atlas found herself racing forward but it wasn't for the usual victim. In a moment of heroics, Vivian moved to take the shot of a bludger and was tossed from her broom with considerable force. As much as she wanted to make sure Ethen would be okay, Atlas wouldn't let Vivian just fall to her doom.

Atlas was able to quickly rush to the falling Vivian and got her securely on her broom. She was happy for the company. "Hell of a save there," Atlas grinned to her new broom companion. "But you aren't out of the game just yet love." Atlas could feel the adrenaline now pumping through her. They would need to make sure to get a bit of revenge before the game was through.

10% chance to automatically block an attempt to score a goal as long as the Keeper is in the goal area. If an attempt to score has been blocked through this effect, the Keeper may as a free action hurl the quaffle at the opponent team in an attempt to injure a player of their choice (it would be recovered with a quaffle grab action) and treated like a bludger or pass the quaffle to a team mate. This must be declared by the Keeper if either of these free actions are to be utilized.

Red. That was all Tyranni could see despite last match being against Gryffindor. Rage began to fill her. Normally one who is capable of restraining her anger and not letting it grip her soul, today she would let it flow. Much like Emperor Palpatine states in those Star Wars movies Andy likes so much, "Good good, let the hate flow through you." There was no reason that a team as strong, skilled, and capable as Slytherin should keep failing to land hits and win matches.

Fans of the Quaffle would be sorely disappointed in the coming minutes of the game, as it would seem as if the whole playing field had forgotten of the leather ball’s existence entirely, instead honing in their focus on matters they deemed more important. And important the coming moments would prove to be – in the case of chasers Tyranni, Howard, and Rosie, scanning the skies for teammates in distress took priority over additional points. After all, in this stage of the game and with a snitch catch so close, one would be foolish to deny the very rational fear of a damaged seeker or beater. In the case of others, such as Atlas and Koko, physical offense took precedence. Drastic times called for drastic measures, didn’t they? Furthermore, on the other side of the field, Maggie was in the process of returning teammate Cash to their broom, much to the excitement of the nearby Slytherin spectators. Team Slytherin was rapidly recuperating in numbers – but would it be enough to stop the notoriously resilient Hufflepuff?

Starting the action off for Slytherin, Koko struck first and struck hard, her gaze fixed upon the likeness of the Hufflepuff seeker once again with a steely fervor as she quickly picked up speed, the air whistling in her wake. However, perhaps Hufflepuff had grown accustomed to Slytherin’s anti-Ethen tactics – for no sooner than Koko trace her path did Atlas descend from the sky like a war hawk, Vivian brandishing her beater’s bat in tow as they prepared to promptly intercept the attack. Unfortunately for them, Koko was prepared. Perhaps she had taken lessons from Alexx? In any way, the senior wiped both opposing ladies from their brooms in one fell swoop, earning a metaphorical point for Slytherin. The announcer ruefully announced her penalty, but the damage had been done – both ladies were thankfully caught by their two nearby saviors, Howard gracefully sweeping Atlas from the skies, Rosie catching Vivian only a moment later.

On the other side of the pitch, Quinn, having only just returned from his joyride with Rosie, was warmed up and ready for some sweet revenge. What better revenge than to ground Slytherin’s resident seeker Dan? Having tracked the trajectory of the snake Captain and promptly caught sight of an incoming bludger, His Giant-ness brandished the bat menacingly – only to rotate his arm the opposite way, sending the metal ball in a backbeat towards the other Captain with a terrifying accuracy. It was a good thing, then, that Erin was nearby. Her eyes tracking the bludger in its warpath, she quickly and skillfully swooped down, swinging her own bat against the death ball and sending it in the opposite direction. What a save for Slytherin.

In opposing ends of the field, both seekers of Hufflepuff and Slytherin were working dutifully in their efforts to obtain the golden ball for their respective teams. Unfortunately, it would seem as if neither had stumbled upon any sort of luck in the coming minutes – Dan’s efforts, perhaps accredited to the multiple attempts on his person, proved to be futile, the air around him void of that golden glint he so desperately scavenged for. Ethen, on the other hand, had gotten no closer to grasping the item that eluded him so. However, there would always be hope while they still maintained themselves on their brooms. Perhaps the next round would yield results!

As the words came out of Avery's mouth, Flash nearly had to do a double-take. The casual nature of the words he said would make it seem like sardonic humor, though he did not know Avery as the type to use it. Flash would observe his face and inspect it for signs of comedic embellishment before woefully discerning it did not exist.

"I can't say much since I've never met them, but that sounds horrible." Flash would say, not making a statement about him nor his parents, but instead sharing how it made him feel. It was a means of avoiding conflict, and accusations of slander. "Love is supposed to be unconditional, be given freely and not earned. Otherwise it's a transaction, and you are a product."

Perhaps it was more strongly worded than it ought to have been, but his filter had greatly diminished with endured lack of sleep. Before, it was likely he would have said nothing at all and stayed in his lane, and perhaps that was smarter in the long run. Still, the subject hit too closely to home for him to stay comfortably silent.

"What do they get out of your success? It's pride, and the approval of others, right? It sounds like being a employee." In no time, it changed from a measured response to a full rant.

Dan snarled. WHERE WAS THE DAMN SNITCH?!

This was absolutely unacceptable. He had taken SO LONG and still hadn't found it. This was the one and only time Dan wished he was a beater. The ability to take out this immeasurable frustration by bashing an iron ball and caving someone's skull in with it would be extremely helpful right now.

He had to control himself, and continue looking for the snitch. Dan would be useful to no one if he gave in to his unbearable frustration.

Erin was a wall. A stalwart force that was capable of both destroying and saving. Of making a change. Of being the difference between defeat and victory. Yet there were only motions, being here and holding this. Breaking that or them. Their efforts for naught, it was like reasoning with a stone. Something with consciousness but no conscience. Something with ambition that lacked satiety. There was always something more, something bigger and something greater. She would not mourn their broken bones or celebrate her victory, they just were. She did not even know why she wanted it, only that she should.

So, she stood between Dan and the part giant Quinn. A lovely wall of a man, possibly aesthetically as well if she had an opinion. It was less the aesthetic but rather the raw, bloody potential she saw in him. She wondered if he could crush a man in his bare hands. She wondered what that felt like. If it would make her feel something beyond the crunch, the crack and the yield.

The bludger would hit his bat with a resounding crack and hurdle towards her. Well, towards Dan until she flew in its path, knocking Dan perhaps off-course as he continued to seek the ever-elusive snitch. Enough instinct to evade death, to try at the very least and feel fate slice through the air uncomfortably close to her neck. She wondered if it hit if she would feel more than pain, if anticipation would stir something. If fear could be manufactured from nothing. She was uncertain. Hollow as always, just biologically, technically alive. It was what drove her in a way, to live perhaps vicariously. To take, to make and to yield the actual essence of life... through the terrible, that being better than the void.

"I am a bigger threat than the Captain," Erin boasted. As long as she flew, he would not lay a single ball on Palmer. "Knock me out or take me out dancing," she propositioned as she eyed the bludger. If he did not take her down, she was going to take him out one way or another.

Howard's eyes looked for the signal when he returned from his penalty lap. What would the order be? Attempted murder of a Slytherin? Shame them by scoring with ease? Nope. None of the above for the Hufflepuff Dhampir. He was play life guard this round. A part of him wished to protest! To go grab a damn beater bat for himself and watch Slytherin fall one by one, but with a nod of his head he would accept his duty and as it would turn out, he did so just in time. Koko would soar though the sky and ram into Atlas and Vivian with expert precision. Howard had fortunately seen this coming and darted off just in time to catch Atlas before she hit the ground. Without a word he would look to see Ethen dive, but come up empty handed. The next round could make or break them as they were now down two brooms. May the Quidditch gods finally turn their favor back to the Badgers.

XXXBrilliant. With Cash returned to their broom safely, Maggie was now able to function on her own without interference. Slytherin was gaining rapidly in numbers, and it seemed as if they could pull this off. Last game, their loss of players proved to be quite the hindrance. Maybe that was the reason for the loss of the game in the first place, but this one seemed to be off to a better start than the last. Maybe that was because of the Silver Arrow provided by one Liana Kerr, though.

Who knew.

The score was close-ish, but Hufflepuff was nearly twenty points ahead of Slytherin. Unfortunate. Hopefully they'd pick up the pace and, with it, morale.

Rainwood said his words drily, but seemed momentarily amused by the fact that Avery had been tossed into the lake. It was some response, at least (showing that the boy indeed had thoughts and emotions), but whether Avery should be happy about such a response, he didn't know. He chose to be indignant instead. "Well, if anyone is annoyed by me, their nerves are just too fragile, don't you think? Those with stronger nerves will simply get along with me, because I'm actually pretty easy to get along with, I think," he nodded sagely to his own insightful words. That's right -- who could possibly not get along with Avery Chen? The small boy did believe he was quite amicable and popular. Rainwood just needed to warm up to him.

And really? Kit Paine was 'alright' even if Avery Chen was not? Just what kind of nonsense has the caretaker been feeding the other kids if they couldn't see he was quite deranged? "Well, I'd say you're just like the others -- fooled by his impeccable charm, then. He does seem charming at first. How unfortunate," he decided out loud, shaking his head slightly in sympathy for the older boy. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you!” Poor Rainwood, just like the rest of the unenlightened masses, with a blindfold tied neatly around his eyes by the one crafty Kit Paine.

-----

Avery's eyes shifted at Flash's response, moving from the darting bludger to somewhere in the distance. He took in Flash's words without allowing himself to see whatever emotion was displayed upon the upperclassman's face. If Flash's expression reflected shock or horror, the small boy knew he would find it difficult to maintain his composure without giving in to the same feelings that Flash was expressing. Flash's concurrence with what he already felt deep within himself -- buried under his self-reassurance that he was wrong to feel that way -- would only make it his own conflicting feelings more difficult to manage.

All he could do was listen as his teammate continued. Avery's lips formed a thin line, and the small boy's normally bright face became introspective and slightly guarded in this internal battle. Was it as easy as Flash said, that love should be unconditional? Was it unconditional with other parents and their children? Even if that was the case with Avery's own parents, he sure didn't feel that way. It felt that their recognition had to be earned. His mother's rage was a force to be reckoned with. He remembered that one disappointing comment from a teacher in his report card; he had been told to "滚出去 (toss yourself out)" like he was a bag of trash, doing her a favor by tossing himself onto the street in nothing but his t-shirt, slippers and underpants, with no time to grab a jacket. The love did not feel unconditional back then.

"Aren't we all products of our parents, though?" he mused out loud. "They take so much time and effort to mold us and care for us, so naturally they'd expect some sort of return on their investment." Yes, 'return on investment' was the exact phrase that his father had used. "Each generation hopes that the next generation would be better off than themselves. It legitimizes the sacrifices that the prior generation made. Otherwise, it would be a waste of our parents' efforts, and wouldn't they just make a net deficit on their investment? If I was less successful than my parents were, we'd just be going backwards." And it would be his fault, because his parents would argue that they had tried so hard to provide for him, to educate him, and to guide him towards success.

During his short life, he had worked so hard to hear that exceedingly rare 'I'm proud of you'. When the threat of disapproval was so strong, any scarce form of praise seemed to make his heart sing: when he won last year's recital competition, when he passed his Royal Conservative of Music exams annually at a pace that outshone his peers, when he got straight As on his report card. It seemed as if he lived for them. And somehow, that didn't feel completely right...

The way he repeated and explained the words of his parents to Flash were meant to solidify his own belief of those words. To etch them into his own heart so that he would feel their validity, too.
