Ever since she was a small girl, Rose had been interested in animals. All kinds of animals, from the more popular furry ones to the less popular scaled ones, to ones with six or eight legs, to ones with a million legs. She had a lot of phases where she liked different animals. When she was much littler, Rose had an infatuation with cats. When she turned about eight, she suddenly became interested in snakes, thinking they were incredibly cool, though that didn't last as long as her cat phase. Then, once she was a little older, she became obsessed with horses. Honestly, it was still one of Rose's dreams to ride a horse some day, and maybe even own one.
That's why it was an obvious choice for Rose to take Care of Magical Creatures once she was allowed to in her third year. Rose had compared her schedule with Henry, her brother, on the first day they had their schedules, and was over the moon that her fellow creature-lover had Care of Magical Creatures class with her on that day. They had also shared the class before, Charms.
Rose and Henry had both just finished Charms, and Rose began packing her things up quickly, picking her bag up and looking around. It was a little bit crowded in the room at the moment, so Rose decided to meet Henry outside. "Henry!" she called in his direction. If she got his attention, she would continue in Arabic, deciding she might as well practice the language Henry was teaching her. "I'll meet you outside?"
She would wait to see if Henry responded, then would leave the classroom, waiting by the door for her stepbrother to exit. They walked away from the classroom together. Since Charms was on the third floor, they began descending the steps that led towards the Hogwarts grounds, where the class was taught.
This was their second class of Care of Magical Creatures, and Rose was excited to have some more hands-on experience with whatever creatures they would be encountering today. "We are going to Care of Magical Creatures, right?" she asked Henry. "I'm not just skipping ahead in the day because I'm excited? Because that sounds like something I would do," she said with a laugh. The day prior to the lesson had not been perfect by any standards, but Rose had kept cheerful throughout the day, driven by her excitement at today's lesson. Rose was walking much faster than she would normally walk, impatient to get to the grounds.
"Have you read Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them yet?" she asked Henry. "I reread it last night, if I'm being honest," she admitted. As they emerged onto the grounds, the sharp autumn chill hit their cheeks. It was definitely fall here. Rose was going to ask Henry what he thought they were going to be studying that day, but then she realized- how the heck would he know? So she decided to ask him a more reasonable question. "Are there any creatures that you hope we'll be studying today?" Rose wondered if there was any creature in particular that intrigued him, like some did for her.
It was weird to think that they had met over a year ago, talking about the very same thing they were talking about now. Care of Magical Creatures. They had been barely second years, waiting for their third year.
They arrived at the lesson, and it was clear what they were studying today. In a pen behind the professor were horses, but not just any horses. Winged horses. Rose watched them in a state of childlike wonder. Here she was. They were right in front of her! She was going to be learning about creatures today, alright. The professor began to teach, explaining to the students their origin and traits and stuff. Rose had read about winged horses, and she could name the ones in the pen before the professor named them himself- Granians, and Aethonans. They were beautiful. After lecturing a little bit, he invited them to feed the horses.
Rose glanced at Henry and moved towards the fence gate, one of the first to go through the gate. The redhead picked up a handful of hay and chose one of the brown horses, knowing the more popular kids who thought they were better than everyone else would fight over the Granians. She approached the winged horse gently. "Hello," she said softly, as the horse began to sniff at the hay in her hand. She held her hand out, which held some hay. She tucked her thumb in, like she had learned to do from all the books she had read on horses without wings.
The Aethonan munched on the hay, then turned to Henry, curious if he had any food. Rose began to stroke the horse, first on its soft nose, and then on its neck, as Henry took a turn. "They're fascinating creatures, aren't they?" Rose murmured, watching the horse. "All these years, dreaming of being in this class, and now we're finally here. It's surreal, isn't it?" she asked Henry.
Somehow, this seemed like a refuge from the battles that they were facing. There was no whispering voice in her ear, no people telling her she wasn't good enough. Her parents and blood siblings were nowhere in sight. Everything, for this moment, was okay.

Charms went by as usual. Henry stuck in the back, practicing his drawings as the others learned spells that he already learned last year. Henry focused in his classes occasionally but they were easily to become bored in when one earns O's constantly and at times the classes tend to be easy.
At the end of class, Henry caught Rose's words. English and Arabic. The teen was regretting teaching the girl the language he muttered in frustration but admitted at times it was fun. Nodding toward her as he collected his things and cloaed his backpack. Waiting for others to leave first, the teen was the last to leave the charms room. Stepping outside.
The duo started down the stairs for the grounds, Henry listened to Rose as he spoke"charms then care of magical creatures both classed are shared between gryffindor and slytherin then our final classes of the day are different," recounting their schedules. Usually slytherin had classes with hufflepuff, the last two years Henry spent majority of his time with Logan but that year majority of classes were wirh gryffindor. Henry smiled toward Rose, they wrre fun. Walking together to classes and chatting away.
Stepping out onto the grounds, Henry took a breath as his ears heard Rose. The teen listened as they drew closer to the classroom, nodding toward the girl as he spoke"I had the book memorized since I was 10," his mind then reeling on which creatures he would like to study. The lad wasn't sure, there were so many and the teen could male a vaild point to study any of them. The teen slugged his shoulders as a reponse to say he didn't know as they neared the classroom.
Henry stood next to Rose in the class, his backpack over his shoulder as his gaze found the creature of study. Abraxans. The teen smiled softly to himself as he thought of facts and behaviors the animals, already knowing well that his is his favorite class. Every aspiring magizoologist starts somewhere after all.
When the time arrived for the students to approach the creatures, Henry watched as most students rushed in. Forming groups around most of the abraxans. The teen watched on, his confidence levels are low and without his feline. Loki. His anxiety raged and social interactions stayed slim.
Deciding to stay with Rose, the teen carefully approached the aethonan she fed. The teen didn't have any food, lifting a hand carefully toward the animal so it could smell him. Once the aethonan sniffed him, Henry stroked its head and neck. Smiling at the creature befire his eyes flickered toward Rose as he spoke"did you know that the abraxans at beauxbations drink only mead and they can grow to be as tall as 50 feet," smiling as he stood next to Rose.

Rose smiled in relief, nodding. He was right. She wasn't hallucinating when she looked at her schedule. She wasn't just being overexcited about this. She was actually going to Care of Magical Creatures. She was actually doing this. She was actually going to interact with these creatures.
The redhead was glad she had this class with Henry. They had been talking about their love for creatures ever since they first got to know each other, that one day on the Quidditch Pitch. It was difficult to believe that they had used to not even know each other. Their first interaction hadn't even been about them. It had been about Cash, when they had gotten that nasty howler late in their first year. Rose hadn't even talked to Henry. They had just both been with Cash, trying to reassure their fellow first year.
Wasn't it crazy that now he was the person that she was closest to? Rose wondered if they would have had their initial conversation, which had been about so much, if they both hadn't gone to help Cash. Their parents would still be married now, of course, but they might not have been as close. Maybe he would have thought her annoying and pushed her away like he did most of his step siblings. (Rose didn't know that, but she could guess that he didn't like Franklin, Faith, or Jess very much.)
It was all very surreal. And now they were here. They were here!
"Of course you did," she murmured, amusement shimmering in her eyes at the personality of Henry. Sometimes he was really predictable. Not all the time. But Rose couldn't deny that you always knew that he was going to get a good grade on everything, and anything he was interested in he would know by heart. Rose hadn't gone so far by memorizing the whole book, but she could call up a lot of things she knew about creatures.
She stroked the neck of the horse, the little kid inside of her wanted to jump like she had hot coals under her feet, but she repressed the urge to bounce in place. Her eyebrows rose as he recited a fact to her. She smiled. "Really? That's really big." That hadn't been what she had heard, she had heard that Abraxans were on average the size of elephants. 50 feet... that was like 5 elephants, stacked on top of each other. More like a blimp. A big one. That was a really big horse. She grinned. "Those Abraxans have a really bad alcohol habit," she joked.
The big creature amazing her, Rose pet the neck of the Aethonian.

Care Of Magical Creatures. The one class that the teen dream of taking, longed to actually ever since he was small. The one class he looked forward to, imagined taking and perpared for years so he could be ready. Perpared. Exicted that the moment actually is happening, the teen always thought he would become a magizoologist. Traveling the world, looking for creatures and studying them. Caring and applying medical need. The teen smiled softly thinking about it, life after hogwarts daunted the teen but that thought seemed wonderful... peaceful even.
Staying in fromt of the Abraxan, rubbing their neck as he took a step to the side for Rose. A gentle smile, looking up at the magnificent creature. They truly are a wonder. Animals and creatures. The teem storked their neck, listening to Rose's interactions from the facts that he short of spewed off without thinking. Nodding, the height was a little big but when compared to giants or dragons then he didn't think that they were that large. However, compared to a Niffler or mooncalf than they were considered large.
The teen smiled toward Rose's joke as he spoke"they only get the best, some of them live better than human," smiling a little as he looked around a few have started on the assignment. Figuring that perhaps they should do the same as Henry spoke"want to work on the assignment together?" A small ofer to work on something that could be interesting as he moved his eyes from Rose to rhe creature.

Still stroking the dark creature, Rose felt a sense of calm come over her. Life had been hard for her for the past couple of months, with her mother getting married and Rose having to adjust to all of the baggage that came along with it. But here, she could forget about that. In this moment, she was okay. Rose inhaled a deep breath, glad to be here. She knew life had been even harder for Henry, with five new step-siblings and his sister gone. She knew this class would come to be easy and enjoyable in the coming days that she took it. Not only would Rose get to meet all kinds of creatures, but she would be able to take a class period to forget about the way that life had gotten hard. She would be able to focus on what made her happy.
"I can imagine," she murmured, referencing the way that Abraxans were treated with only the best. They were quite wonderful creatures.
Henry asked her about doing the assignment together, and she smiled. "Sure," she said, giving the Aethonian one last stroke and smile before stepping away and starting the assignment with Henry. They worked quickly together, as they always did, and Rose found herself appreciating this class. Appreciating this peace that came over her.
Appreciating this refuge from the storm.
