’Okay, okay, that’s enough, mum.’ Penelope murmured, trying to push her mother off herself.

Penelope was about to attend Hogwarts, which she had been looking forward to as long as she could remember. Her honey blond hair was loose around her shoulders, and her gemstone green eyes glinted. She wore a cream-colored cost over a white tank top, along with blue flared jeans, and combat boots. Her robes were in her trunco, as she was planning to change once she arrived at her destination.

Reluctantly, her mother stopped hugging her daughter. ‘I can’t believe you’re actually attending Hogwarts!’ she gushes.’ I mean, it seems just like yesterday that you were-‘

’ I know!’ Penelope yelped. ‘Mum, could you please not embarrass me in front of everyone?’

Her father smirked. With his easygoing, laid-back attitude, he was a much easier person to get along with than her mother. ‘Okay, it’s time for her to go,’he said, slapping Penelope on the back. ‘You get into Gryffindor, my girl.’

‘Yes, you get there, Penlop-py-py!’her brother declared.

Penelope grabbed her trunk, running toward the train, and stepped into it just as the doors were closing. She waved to her family as the train started to move. In a few second, she could no longer see them.

Penelope headed down the length of the train, bubbling with excitement. She was ready to make friends! However, almost all the compartments were full. Finally, she found one at the back, which was empty. She stuffed her trunk into the overhead compartment, and sat down by the window.

Selena was beyond just simply excited at the moment. She was going to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry after what seemed like forever waiting. Her older brother and sister had already gone several years before her, so she and her younger sister had been left out of the fun and the magic...until now. Selena would be going finally, and she had assured her younger sister that the three more years she had wouldn't seem that long. Hopefully she was right.

After running through the brick wall to arrive at platform 9 and 3/4, she and her older siblings turned to their parents and younger sister. Giving them each a quick hug, the older two raced off to the train to find a compartment, leaving Selena behind. She bent down to the point where she was eye level with her sister. "Hey Ella, look at me. You'll be okay, alright? I'll send you lots of letters and trinkets."

Ella looked at Selena hopefully. "You won't forget 'bout me?" she asked with eyes full of innocence. "I could never!" Selena said, pretending to be shocked. "I've got to go now, but I'll write you as soon as I can okay?" Ella nodded with a small smile.

Selena gave each of her parents a quick hug before heading onto the train. She lingered on the stair leading into the train, gripping the rail tightly. This was what she always wanted, but she felt alone and a bit anxious now. Giving a wave to Ella, she boarded the train.

Most every compartment she looked in was full, except one near the back. This one was occupied by one girl sitting all alone. Selena pushed the door open. "Hello. Do, um, do you mind if I sit here?"

Suddenly, the compartment door was pushed open. Penelope looked toward the doorway of the compartment, where a girl stood, probably a first year, just like herself. Her light brown hair matched her medium-toned skin. Her eyes were blue-grey, like staring into deep water. Penelope decided she seemed nice enough, though her eyes gave away that she was extremely smart. Penelope had realized some time ago, that really smart people have a certain kind of look in their eyes. Penelope might might be one of those super geniuses, but she was quite good at reading people.

‘ Hello.’ the girl said. ‘Do, um, do you mind if I sit here?’

Penelope smiled. She was planning to make some new friends, and this girl showing up here at her compartment was the perfect opportunity. Maybe this girl would even be her new best friend at Hogwarts.

She nodded at once. ‘Of course!’ she agreed in a friendly manner. ‘Come sit down!’

Then, without waiting for the girl to settle down, Penelope continued talking. ‘I’m Penelope.’ She held out her hand.’You can call me Penny. Or Pen— I don’t mind. My friends just sort of switch between them.’ She paused for a while. ‘What’s your name?’

The girl in which the compartment was occupied gave Selena a smile, and almost immediately invited Selena in. For this she was grateful, otherwise she probably would have spent the train ride wandering the corridor. First meetings, first impressions, new friends, none of those were really her strong suit. If this girl invited her in looking for a new friend, she would probably be disappointed.

Selena came in all the same, not willing to spend any more time out of a compartment. Before she had even sat down, the other girl started talking. As she spoke, Selena sat down and arranged her bag that was slung over her shoulder on the seat beside her.

Selena shook Penny's extended hand with a polite smile. "My name's Selena," she said. "No cool nicknames there like yours, just Selena." She was really terrible at making new friends, she thought to herself as she processed what she had just said.

The train rattled on, but it was just the beginning of their journey to Hogwarts. Selena decided she would have to say something if she wanted to keep the conversation going, but what? Small talk wasn't, and had never been, her thing. "So, which house would you be going to if you had the choice?" Small talk wasn't her thing, but hypotheticals and questions definitely were. They fell into the category of learning, which she could never get enough of.

As Penelope spoke, the girl sat down across from herself, and arranged her bag that was slung over her shoulder on the seat beside her. She shook Penelope’s extended hand with a polite smile. "My name's Selena," she said. "No cool nicknames there like yours, just Selena."

Penelope nodded. She thought the girl’s name was pretty nice. Also, she knew there was a moon goddess called Selene, and there was an aunt of hers who was named Selena as well, so…..

The train rattled on and on, and Penelope wondered if she ought to say something else, in order to break the ice. It was getting really boring, and it was just the beginning of the long train ride!

Luckily, before she needed to say anything, Selena spoke first. ‘So, which house would you be going to if you had the choice?’ she asked.

Penelope smiled. Since she had been thinking about her house ever since first finding out about Hogwarts(which is like, a looong time ago), she knew the exact answer.

”Gryffindor,” Penelope answered without hesitation. “‘Where dwell the brave at heart.’ And both my parents were there too, so I’m pretty sure that’s gonna be my house.” She added, looking at Selena. “What about you? Which house do you want to get in? Maybe Ravenclaw, the house of the super-smart genius ravens?”

Penelope nodded and a silence fell over the two girls momentarily. When Selena asked her question, Penelope answered Gryffindor without a moment's hesitation. It must be nice to know for certain what you wanted like Penelope seemed to, but Selena knew what she wanted as well. Ever since she was little, her father used to tell her that she was destined to go to the house of the eagles someday. Selena always nodded when he said that and replied 'Where else would I go?'

"You're right. I'm aiming for Ravenclaw," she said, wondering how Penelope was able to tell which house she wanted. "Where wit beyond measure is a man's greatest treasure." After a slight pause she continued, "My dad was a Ravenclaw, but my mum's a muggle." She hoped her father's Ravenclaw lineage would land her a spot there too, as that was what she wanted above all else. To be with people who loved to read and learn just as much as she did.

Another pause and then, "How did you know I wanted to be in Ravenclaw before I said anything?" It had been sort of bugging Selena anyways, so the pause seemed like the time to ask. She had heard of Legilimens from her father, and though she had never met one personally, this kind of seemed like mind reading to her. After all, Selena had barely been in the compartment for more than five minutes and she didn't consider herself easy to read.

She was right about the house Selena was aiming for, no surprise. Selena continued to tell her that while her father was a wizard, her mother was a muggle. Penelope had always wondered what Muggles lived like. She was kind of jealous of half-bloods like her friend Selena here, who could get the best of both worlds. She, on the other hand, had been brought up in an entirely magical household, never ever even seeing what the Muggle world looked like.

Then, Selena asked Penelope how she’d known that she wanted to be in Ravenclaw. Penelope smiled. Ah, yes, a lot of people had asked her that question before. They’d wondered if she could read people’s minds. A… Legilimenz, or something? She briefly remembered reading about that type of person somewhere.

However, the truth was perhaps a bit less exciting.

’I’m just good at reading people.’ She told Selena.’I just know what they were thinking just by looking at them. It’s a sort of…special skill of mine. After all,’ she shrugged.’ I’m not super smart like you, so it kinds of make sense I’d have something else, right? Besides, I’m sure lots of people are good at reading others, like me.’
