2022 Stage 2 Hufflepuff vs Ravenclaw: Match 5

Autumn had never cast Metelojinx in a duel before. As she watched as the stormclouds formed above her opponents heads, she made a promise to herself to use it more often. She had a second to feel a pang of pride at Lea and herself, and two seconds to dodge Aida's spell- Incendio Duo, really? Autumn loved fire, but this early in the duel?- before the smoke of Mars's spell covered everything.

She tried to stifle her coughing, being generally successful. She liked the smoke, she really did. There was something mysterious and unknown to it, a certain aesthetic that Autumn enjoyed. But she really wasn't as much of a fan of it in the middle of a duel, where it was majorly messing with multiple of her senses.

Still, as far as she could see, which was now tragically not all that much, nobody had actually gotten hurt. Interesting. She knew all too well how fast the upper hand could change in a duel, but she wasn't even sure who had the upper hand at the moment. It made her feel curious as to how everything would pan out.

Round 2

Aida would brace themself for what they thought the Hufflepuffs would do; however, the Pale Mage had nothing to fear. Well, not quite, considering their partner was now the target. It would seem that Hufflepuff was reading Ravenclaw like a book during this duel.

Autumn and Mars turned their attention on one another, sending blazing flames cutting through the smoke. Not seeing ensured that they hit their intended target setting each other alight. Autumn would find the shoulder of her robe being eaten away, and Mars would find the flame biting at their hip.

Lea also turned her attention to Mars, casting a particularly powerful Flipendo that could be recognized even through the smoke. The blue burned brighter, and the energy could be felt by everyone. Perhaps, it was because of her partner’s Incendio lighting the way that gave Mars the chance to evade, but they would by the smallest of fractions manage to get out of the way of what would have indeed knocked them to the ground.

The storm clouds above Ravenclaws’ heads churned and rumbled ominiously. Electricity seemed to build up over Mars for just a moment, but still, it held off from releasing its fury.

From deep in the depths of the smoke, Mars could barely make out the incantation of their opponents. They bristled, readying their own wand for fire. Literally.

Muttering Incendio Duo beneath their breath, they watched the brilliant burst of flame shoot from the wand tip the second another jet came streaming at them. Startled, Mars jumped, managing to keep the flame away from their chest. But it wasn't quite enough.

Darn it. Mars winced as they felt the flame spread the side of their hip. Fire was great right up until it was you up in flames. They pointed their wand down, the Extinguishing Spell right on the tip of their tongue before a flash of blue light caught their eye.

Breathlessly, Mars hit the floor, watching as the abnormally bright Knockback Jinx hit the wall. They breathed a sigh of relief. It was definitely good that hadn't hit.

From the ground, Mars could barely make out Aida's form, seemingly untouched in the hazy fog. Good. At least one of them was unscathed. They struggled to their feet as the biting at their hip reminded them of the flames. A quiet purr of thunder reminded them of the other problem they had.

Gods. "Let's just make it through this alive, huh?" they muttered to themselves.

The smoke of Aida's spell was making Autumn feel confused, so she defaulted to one of her favourite things; excessive amounts of fire. There was something comforting, watching the flames leave her wand, and something victorious, seeing the flames hit her target on the hip before the smoke covered up her line of sight once again.

But the feelings of comfort and victory didn't last long, as Autumn slowly realised that the smell of fire wasn't coming only from Mars, but also herself. She had only that smell, and a growing bright mix of reds and yellows in the edge of her peripheral vision to warn her before she saw that she too was aflame. Autumn took the shortest of moments to note internally that either she was one of two great minds thinking alike, or they were both fools who seldom differed.

With no spells aimed for her, she could truly focus on her spellwork. It was harder to focus during a duelling competition- especially with this fog- but not having to focus on as many things certainly helped. Plus, Flipendo wasn't a new spell to the second year. Hopefully Autumn was fine for now, deciding to ignore her partner temporarily. Just long enough to send her spell flying.

On target- on target- missed. The hufflepuff grimaced, but was impressed with the Ravenclaw. That had been a close one from what Lea could see. That done, brown eyes would look over to Autumn, noticing the oranges and yellows of fire. A wince escaped, unable to really help. "Are you alright?" became more of a rhetorical question in the moment.

Round 3

The clouds above the Ravenclaws seemed to twist and turn with sinister intent as electricity flitted between the gloom above their heads. Quite rumbling sounded off after the micro charges. Energy in the room was high enough to make people’s hair stand on end. Yet still, they did not smite the Eagles.

Autumn would allow her shoulder to smolder the fire-eating through the fabric of her robe and biting into her skin before fading away into fleeting embers. Instead of targeting Mars again this round, she would turn her wand on Aida, attempting to disarm them. It was a solid idea considering they were the only one that could function in the thick smoke. However, the Pale Mage would not be hindered this round evading the spell and keeping their wand steady in hand.

Aida felt their tongue finally loosen in their mouth as they deftly dodged the attempted disarm that was headed their way. The very thing that helped the eagle would be renewed but worse. Smoke would start to billow from Aida’s mayhaw wand, and it would seem denser than the smoke that Mars had produced.

Lea kept her rapt attention on Mars, sending a black cloth their direction, but Mars had no intention of being further blinded than they already were by the smoke on the stage. Not only would they gracefully outmaneuver the blindfold, but they would also point their wand at their hip. A mist would spray onto the flames that nipped at their hip and extinguish it.

Mars pointed their wand down, whispering the Extinguishing Charm under their breath as they kept their eyes up to the field. The fog was beginning to thin now, and they could just make out the hazy figures of their opponents.

It seemed like Autumn was still on fire and Lead.... Whoa! Mars ducked as the blindfold came whizzing by their head, breathing in a sigh of relief as it passed. They didn't mind being blind by smoke. Blind by blindfold? That was a different story.

Suddenly, the smoke began to thicken again. They recognized, finally, Aida by their side. The fog billowing out of the tip of their wand was thick, almost tangible enough to bite.

"Brilliant," Mars breathed, hopefully loud enough for Aida to hear. It was rare to see smoke that thick. They were a little envious to be honest, but there was nothing much to do about that.

As the piste refilled with a hazy blackness, Mars heard the rumble from above them. The lightning cloud shivered, crackling in warning but still not striking. Mars crossed their fingers it never would. Lightning was, frankly, quite scary.

But now what? They narrowed their eyes, straining to see within the fog. How nice it would be to have an extra set of eyes, somewhere, somehow.

Yeah, she figured.

Fumos seemed to be their tactic- why Lea wasn't too sure- but she had seen how it was starting to thin out only to be replaced with even more darkness. Brown eyes blinked, hoping that would somehow work to stop the smoke from debilitating her vision. It didn't, of course. Still, the hufflepuff could guess approximately where Mars was, hoping they wouldn't move too much as the second year cast her spell. "Obscuro."

And then it flew into the world beyond, a place that Lea couldn't see. Hopefully it had hit, but whatever could be seen in the fog suggested otherwise. Oh well. She glanced towards where Autumn was suspected to be, a quick "how are you doing?" to make sure her partner was okay.
