Jake took a deep breath. It was his second time captaining a duel, and his first one had been....well...a disaster. Everyone had been fighting, Jake hadn't been able to keep control at all, there had been fire, and seeing people get knocked out on the platform was even more horrible than it had sounded like. He didn't know which part was the worst of it, but the fighting was the one that was his fault. He was supposed to keep control and he hadn't done it. He was determined to do better this time. He HAD to.

"Uh oh..." Jake mumbled nervously under his breath, as he saw Alec Mason approaching. Right...his Gryffindor team was the same as last time. It had been Alec that had started all of the arguing and insults then. Jake had felt bad for him in the end, after what Samantha had said to him. But Jake was still sort of worried he might start another fight. This called for...well...a strongly-worded speech?

"Um...ahem," Jake began, just as he had last time. He didn't really know how to make everybody look at him, and when they DID look at him it was always like he forgot what he even wanted to say or how he had ever been going to say it. Even becoming a prefect still hadn't gotten him used to talking to everyone...even though he knew he had to get better. "Okay!" Jake began. "Remember everyone, I want a fair and good duel! Everyone follow the rules and be nice. You know the rules so...I won't say them. But there's a time limit today, and if the time limit runs out make sure um...that you stop dueling right away. There's probably not even any time for...talking about other stuff," he threw in awkwardly. Was he throwing a glance at Alec? Maybe.

"...Good luck everyone! Er, begin!" he said, stepping back and getting ready to watch especially closely, determined to keep a much better eye on things THIS time.

The tactics Alec had tried last duel, well, they were too much. Alec had to face the fact that holding up a facade like that again was more draining then getting hit with a flipendo. Not only that but he had gained attention out of it, that was far more tiring to deal with. Especially when the person he was receiving it from, was a family member of his teammate.

Henry had better leave Alec alone, or not come at all, the last thing Alec wanted on his mind was the fact that Henry could stand up mid-duel and shout nonsense from the stands once more. Not only would he have to deal with that, but the possibility of arguing with his teammate mid-duel because the kid wouldn't leave Alec to his business.

Alec took a deep breath as he walked in with Rose. “We'll do great. We have tact.” He spoke encouragingly. He couldn't keep on with telling her they we're doing fine after every spell, this would have to do. Alec was tempted to push on the fact that winning wasn't a big deal. Only going against it because he figured downplaying how much winning a duel meant wasn't going to do anything good.

They met their match, the same kid Alec had seen last time was explaining some changes. Alec was not so casually staring the other team down. . . Alec's head would turn, raising an eyebrow at Jake in an instance when Jake slipped in the comment of perhaps not having time to talk of other stuff. An eye roll followed. All right, you say that then. It's not like there's much to comment on anyway.

Alec doubted his silence would stay for long, but even he didn't know what he would choose to say when he broke it. A nod to Rose, and Alec felt ready.

Rose had been feeling pre-duel nerves all week. Truthfully, she had been feeling pre-duel nerves since the day after her last duel. She had been practicing like crazy in the dueling club.

She had won her last duel, but so had the Slytherins she was dueling. Rose had known that even before she found out who she was dueling. That was because the Slytherins had won every single duel they had participated in. That made Rose anxious. She hoped that the Gryffindors would be able to break the streak that the Slytherins had started.

Rose stood near Henry, up until the point where she saw that the first duel was ending, and her duel was next. "I'm gonna go up there," she told him. "Good luck on your duel. Not that you need it." She smiled at him, nudged him playfully, then went to go stand closer to the stage, standing next to Alec, her dueling partner. Rose was standing near her partner, going over the things in her head she had prepared for this.

She looked over at him, hoping for the eternal aura of confidence that he had throughout their last duel. Somehow with Alec, Rose had finally won a duel. "We've got this," she told him, grinning. Okay. She could do this.

He said something about how they had- a tact. Was that slang for a tactic? Did Rose really live under a rock that much, that she didn't know the slang? Or maybe Alec was just weird. Okay, she would go for the second this time. She had to keep her confidence.

Rose grabbed an elastic from around her wrist and quickly threw her hair up in a high ponytail, waiting for them to be announced. She tightened it with her hands. The hair successfully was out of her face, so now she could duel without any hair obstructing her vision. She pulled her wand out of her pocket, buzzing with anticipation.

As Rose was called to the stage, she noticed the way Jake (who had been in charge of their duel last time) seemed tentative around Alec. She really hoped the boy was okay. How much more of this could he take? She climbed up on the stage, nodding to Alec and taking her stance. Rose was grateful for the time limit at this stage. That meant that their duel wouldn't go preposterously long as their last one had. Rose glanced at Alec. This was about the time Alec had started insulting the other team. Well, truthfully, he had done it before, talking about how Dealla had lost her last duel. Rose wasn't exactly sure if he'd do the same this time, so she shouted over to them in a friendly tone, "May the best team win."

Deep breaths. Piper calmed her slightly queasy stomach while studying her opponents. Her narrow face was focused, and she projected as much confidence as possible onto the stage. Head held high, shoulders back, feet grounded, poker face. That was half the battle, after all. And it was quite notable that she had won her last duel, and thus significantly less nervous. The second-year Slytherin's spell casting should be on par. In any case, the moderator seemed excited.

The opposition was Gryffindor this time, and they appeared older and more advanced than last duel's Hufflepuffs. Either way, Piper was ecstatic about Slytherin's previous victories, and there was not a single chance she could be the one to break the streak. What's more, Astrea was an excellent partner last time and would likely be valuable this round as well.

Though she wasn't particularly tall, Piper faced the Gryffindors. The prospect of an audience wasn't a pleasant one, but she could make do. Rounding up her scatterbrained thoughts, Piper adjusted her side braid and readied her wand. The girl on the other team politely spoke, and Piper gave a slight nod. She wasn't quite bold enough to speak it aloud (lest she be wrong and then taken as a fool), but all of her being resonated with her response. We will.

With the coming of the new year and the slow adaptation into the idea of 2022, there comes an intense preceding wave of prolonged preparation, whether it be for the winter holidays (or lack thereof) or, most relevantly, for the second stage of the 2021-2022 Dueling Championships. After clearing the previous stage with wins down the board, Slytherin was in both the good graces of the gods of strategy and in good shape to practice said proposed strategies, ever prepared for the best and worst to come.

Both Slytherin and- from the rather dubious account of Astrea's limited exposure to the Gryffindor duelling team- seemingly Gryffindor had chosen to keep their teams from the last stage instead of shuffling members about, choosing not to gamble with the new rule announced at the beginning of the school year and instead keep consistent practice routines. The largest variable of change would be in regards to their targeted opponents. Had Astrea not been so much of a sheltered pureblood, perhaps the phrase "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" might have rung true for their partnering situations, but alas, we are not so lucky.

In this match, the two teams were overlooked by a somewhat nervous-sounding moderator- whether it from the nerves or other factors she cared not enough to tell specifics-, who announced the standard procedure of action and held in great importance on the newly set time limit each duel could not pass. Though her most recent match had not weighed too strongly lengthwise, she knew too well the endless seconds of outwaiting an equally matched team from her brief stint at summer camp. With the amount of time allowed cut down, hopefully, everyone would receive a serious duel free of useless taunts so common in past matches and instead, focus well upon ensuring the combined attention of all. Considering the demeanours of some of Pendrast's brood, though...

Settling into position on the piste with wand at the ready, Astrea sent a scrutinising look over to the opposing team just as a word of encouragement was shared, unwilling to distract herself from seeing the duel to its conclusion. The ever-familiar electric buzz of her magic drew her solidly into the focused mindset, as much of a steady companion as her current duel partner. Piper had a good head upon her shoulders and knew how to use it, as young as she was. Appropriately driven without needing to overcompensate skill-wise and able to accept Astrea's untalkative nature without prodding, the other would no doubt perform well today. They had seen victory once and, if they were wise about it, they could find an end worth something.

If Jake had overheard what Alec had said to Rose, he might have been surprised (Jake wasn't really sure what tact was, but he didn't think it was what Alec had done last time). Still, it WAS a very different Gryffindor team that took the stage this time. Alec was quiet, just watching the other team, and Rose even shouted out a friendly encouragement that the best team would win. Jake looked at them with surprise. That was nice of her. This was all starting much better than last time. He began to relax a little.

The Slytherin team was quiet, but they looked no less confident. The younger girl, Piper, nodded in response to the Gryffindor team's words. The other girl, Astrea, hadn't responded at all. Jake looked warily at the older girl. He really hoped she wasn't going to break any rules, because he didn't look forward to telling her what to do. Jake gulped. There was something about her and the look she was giving the other team, quiet as it was, that made Jake feel a little nervous. Or maybe he was just nervous anyway cause he ALWAYS was before these things.

But the duelists didn't look nervous, and they wasted no time casting spells as the duel began. Jake wasn't sure who had started, or perhaps they had all just started at once, nobody wanting to be the one to lose the edge of first strike.

On one end of the platform a knockback jinx sailed past Piper, who had managed to dodge out of the way at the last moment, only for her vision to go dark. To anybody who had seen the Gryffindor's LAST duel (like Jake had, right up close), this would be all too familiar. He had seen Alec use his blindfold before. The Gryffindors had both teamed up on Piper, but wait!

Alec couldn't bask in his success for too long. Perhaps he might have thought he got out of the fray unscathed, but soon he would feel the nagging urge to laugh. Was it the euphoric thrill of landing the first blow? No, it was Piper's tickling jinx! It had just hit his side in the action, and the urge to laughter would become uncontrollable, doubling the Gryffindor boy over. Uh oh...Jake remembered the LAST time that happened. This was all seeming like deja vu to Jake. How was Alec gonna react now?

Astrea, the oldest sorta-kinda-scary-looking girl had cast a wind jinx in the direction of Rose, who would try to get out of the way, but not be able to quite manage it. The force of the gust would sail past, and Rose was spared the brunt of it, but not all. She would still feel the gust of wind on the edges of the spell, and any attempts to move further might just throw her off balance. Perhaps the best strategy was to wait it out.

The Gryffindors had taken the first blows, but they had succeeded in taking one Slytherin out of the fight for a moment. Had they targeted her first because she was youngest? Jake didn't know, but he kept a close eye on what was going to happen next.

Neither of the Slytherins seemed to respond to her friendly comment. Rose had been hoping that they would have said something back, but she was met with only a cold look from the both of them.

How rude. x

"So talkative and friendly," she said quietly. Unless one of the Slytherins had freakishly good hearing, only Alec would be able to hear.

Rose wasn't sure their intention in not being friendly to her. Maybe they were just bad at sportsmanship? Maybe it was an intimidation strategy? Rose knew she had heard from Henry that one of their captains pushed them really hard. Maybe he didn't want them to be friendly to their opponents? That was ridiculous. You should always be friendly to people. It was only a friendly duel, after all.

Spells flew again. Alec's spell was wonderfully cast, and Piper was hit by his spell. The blindfolding spell. It had been a common spell in their last duel, and she didn't doubt that if Astrea and Piper had watched their last duel, they probably could have expected at least one Obscuro. Okay, maybe at least five. Hey, it was effective! Piper was now blindfolded, wasn't she?

Rose's own spell, a Flipendo, and though her spell looked fairly good, her aim was way off and Piper dodged it excellently. Though she tried her best to get out of the way, Astrea's Wind Jinx just nicked her. Thankfully, she didn't take the brunt of the spell, but she was now caught in the wind, and didn't trust herself to move any more. She gritted her teeth. This wasn't how it was supposed to go. Anxious feelings started to boil inside of her. She wasn't good enough for this-

The redhead forced herself to stop. She was fine. It was fine.

She smiled towards Alec, a silent nod reassuring him that she was okay before she set her sights back on the rude Slytherins.

Alec was trying to be careful. If he carried with strategy, they may be able to play their cards right. He done pep-talk after pep-talk towards himself earlier. Nerves higher and much more bound with energy, it was hard for him to make the logical decisions he wanted too and not act on impulse.

Alec hadn't been sure how to feel when coming upon this duel. The Slytherin duelling team was good, made up of many valuable assets, and strong duellers. What he had been hoping was not to befall the fate of last year's case with duelling Slytherin. The team had been insulting each other, now sure, Alec almost turned Rose against him, but it wasn't like he was insulting her. He was pretty sure they had patched things up, and her certainly wasn't looking to unpatch things again.

She was an amazing duellist, Alec knew he needed her.

Alec would reach, wand out, casting his first spell of the duel. “Obscuro!” He would watch as the blindfold flung itself towards the girl, noticing how close it had been to missing. Alec's eyebrows would furrow, but he would shake it off, no need to let a second year get the best of him.

Alec turned watching as Astrea cast and shouted, “Rose you've got a spell coming towards you should probably-” too late. Trying to inform the girl who was busy trying to cast a spell had failed. He'd probably thrown her off in her own surprise too. “duck...” Alec would mutter looking down, he smiled sheepishly. Turning his head he would whisper, “Sorry...” in her direction. Focusing his attention only to realize a spell had hit him. Alec's eyes widened in surprise.

It would take a few seconds before the third-year would burst out in laughter. The spell obviously doing it's job. In the midst of it though he would turn to Rose, and there seemed to be more genuine laughter sprinkled in with the one from the tickling spell. “Again?” Alec would ask, though he didn't seem to be looking for an answer. The second time the first spell on him during a duel was Rictusempra. His laughter filled the room more then he words would. There was a certain spark of amusement in his eyes, a smile that would drawl close at his lips.

Alec's eyes would settle on Rose for a serious moment, even through his laughing. He wanted to make sure she was alright. It was just assessment, you know, for better duelling strategy. Alec tensed as his eyes stayed on her. All of the tenseness being let go when she nodded his way. Something was different this time. . .
