At the brink of defeat
No matter how many times anyone insisted otherwise, Nessie was entirely convinced that Hogwarts was intended to be a maze. Why else would it be so difficult to navigate? Before going away to boarding school, Nessie had lived in a small home with her great-aunt and spent much of her time outside; winding passageways, twisting corridors, and moving staircases were all well beyond anything she’d ever experienced before. At first, it had seemed very grand, like something out of a storybook. However, after months of reality it was turning out to be much less exciting, and far more inconvenient.February 2, 2022
Nessie had found her way to the library, a feat she had accomplished before, though it had taken some attentiveness and effort on her part. She sat down at one of the tables, pulling her hair out of her eyes and securing it into a messy ponytail, and then intended to pull her notes and textbooks from her bag, only to realize: she hadn’t brought her bag, it remained forgotten in her dormitory.
Facing the prospect of trekking to her common room and back, Nessie let out a pitiful whisper-wail of “No!” and a huff of frustration. She flung her arms in front of her onto the table, and then dropped her head down onto her arms in utter despair.

At the brink of defeat
Delphinia was sitting in the dorms, reading. She had read her book for a long time- It was a thick book, and tall as well- and when she was about to put it away and begin practicing her violin, he saw a small bag labeled "Nessie Swansea". Nessie, huh? Delphinia thought, pursing her lips. She knew who Nessie was; she had seen her at meal times, around the female dorms, and around the common room. This, of course, made Nessie a fellow Hufflepuff. Delphinia was now biting her bottom lip; She had heard Nessie say she was going to the library, and she wondered if she had forgotten her bag. Maybe, she thought, Just maybe, I should bring it to the library and see if she needs it. She then bit her lip harder, acknowledging the fact that she would look like a total idiot if Nessie had not forgotten the bag and had not needed it at all. She then decided that she would take that risk; After all, she needed a friend to talk to in her House. Maybe they could have a little sleepover in the dorms, though of course they wouldn't sleep, they would make face masks, paint each other's nails, do each other's make up, grow up, become world renowned witches and- Sorry what? It was just a friend she was going to make in school. She reminded herself that Nessie probably wouldn't be worth a galleon to her in a few years... Although she did want to stay friends with her. She quickly grabbed the bag and made her way through the seemingly endless corridors and into the library, walked up from behind, and tapped the girl on the shoulders.
"H-Hey, Nessie?

Victoria got up from her bed with distress. Her homework piled up, and Victoria picked up her bag and cluttered the scattered scrolls inside. She walked slowly to the library, she. She had a lot of homework and only she could do in the library.
Victoria looked around as she entered the library. There weren't many people, so Victoria began to wander around the tables in hopes of finding someone she knew. A few minutes later, two people caught his eye. She knew someone; Delphinia. They had already met her, but there was another Hufflepuff girl standing next to her. Victoria moved towards them.
"Hi Delphinia! Imm- And we haven't met you yet. I'm Victoria, Victoria Honest. Can I sit here?" Victoria said with a big smile. She sat down at the table and took out the parchments from her white bag. "Hogwarts really is like a maze, it took me at least 15 minutes to get here." Victoria said, frowning.
Victoria rummaged through her bag and found the chocolates she always carried with her. She took out 3 packages and handed two of them to the girls. "Do you want them? They're really delicious." Victoria smiled faintly. She then rolled up her sleeves and looked at her homework. She took a quill and ink from her bag and began to write.

Delphinia smiled and hugged Victoria when she came up; as she was already comfortable with her. "Hey, Victoria!" She smiled even wider when offered chocolates. "Thanks! They look super good. I'll save them for later." She decided she would have them when she was reading in the dorms later, and put them in her bag. "Um, well, this is Nessie, she's another Hufflepuff, I think, um, I just came here to bring her bag-" She then turned to Nessie. "Did you forget it? Or did you not need it? I'm sorry, I'll just take it back if you need me to-" She took a deep breath to calm herself. "Um, but yeah." Delphinia took a seat at the table. "Anyway, um..." She muttered, attempting to make small talk, "How... How are you guys doing today? I'm doing pretty good, I mean; I hear my father may be arriving soon, and he may be bringing mother as well, but uh, I'm not really looking forward to Mother coming, between you and me, she was mad at me for leaving for Hogwarts, and she wasn't- Um- She didn't want-" Delphinia sighed, realizing she was droning on and on again and put her head down, returning to her original question. "What's up with you guys?"

At the brink of defeat
Nessie had been on the verge of tears when she felt a tap on her shoulders. She sat up properly again at the sound of a hello and her name – more out of surprise than anything else. She blinked owlishly as she took in what was happening around her, recognizing her fellow Hufflepuff Delphinia and taking note of Victoria’s introduction. Nessie even nodded along when Victoria pointed out Hogwarts’ similarity to a maze. And then she was offered chocolates, and Nessie smiled hesitantly, nodding again and reaching out to accept, mumbling, “Thanks.”
She was truly beginning to hope that she might be able to ask a favor of the girls around her, that perhaps she could ask to share their things instead of having to journey all the way back to her dormitory, when she realized that Delphinia had actually brought the forgotten bag.
Disbelief, relief, and gratitude rushed through her, and Nessie beamed happily, her worries melting away for now. “Oh! I forgot it, yeah. I was just wondering what I was going to do without it … you’re the best, Delphinia! I’ll keep it, you don’t need to take it back. Thanks for bringing it, you didn’t need to …” But Nessie was very pleased that Delphinia had. Then she turned to Victoria, finding a volume louder than a mumble this time, “And thank you for the chocolates, it’s really really nice of you to share.”
It seemed the two other girls already knew each other, and Nessie tilted her head in slight confusion when Delphinia mentioned her parents arriving. She wasn’t really sure what Delphinia meant, as she’d never heard of parents coming to school. Nessie glanced to Victoria in search of assistance – it seemed like she already knew Delphinia, so maybe she knew more about it and would know what to say?
When asked what was up, Nessie let out a self-deprecating laugh. “Well, you already know what I’ve been up to … I came to the library to study, forgot to bring anything with me, and now here you both are. I thought today was turning out to be a bad day, but now it’s great! What about you, Victoria, what's up?”
