A Runaway Cat

The blonde reckoned that she must look to be on the verge of insanity to any other students who saw her running through the corridors like a madman, but she couldn't bring herself to care what others thought of her at this point in time. "Nina! Nina where are you?" She yelled, desperately searching every corner and crevice as she passed, "Come here girl! Where did you run off to? Please come back." She stopped in the middle of a random corridor, turning in a circle helplessly. Her chest heaving, breaths coming in big gulps from the exertion of running through this massive castle. She definitely looked on the verge of tears as she ran a hand helplessly through her hair, which was now messy and tangled and if Adelaide had the mental capacity to think of anything else except Nina right now, she would've been very annoyed with how her hair looked.

A Runaway Cat
He did not know why she was there, nor did he know whom she was looking for. He only knew she was scared. For this reason, coupled with his love of animals, Marius took the Silver Siberian cat into his arms. It was not an easy job, mind you, for she was terribly afraid of everything, thus attempting to avoid everything and everyone including him. It was probably pure luck that the English boy managed to catch her. His left hand holding the female kitten, his right gently stroking her thick fur in attempts of calming her down, Marius was going to take her to Professor Browne's office. He would know what to do, and maybe he could let her stay in his office for a few hours until they could find her owner.
Marius walked through the corridors of Hogwarts. He did not really pay attention to what was happening around them, his attention was spent only on how to get the cat safely to his Head of House as quickly as possible. Too slow on his way means increasing the probability of accidentally letting her drop and run away again. The kitten meowed from time to time, and Marius thought it was very likely that because she was unfamiliar with the school and now she felt afraid as she found herself in a strange location. He did not even see a worried-looking girl pausing in the very same corridor he was currently passing.

She held onto Nina firmly, not letting her get the chance to jump down and make a break for it again, before focusing her attention on the boy. "Thank you so much, you're a hero! I really thought I had lost her forever. I don't even know how she managed to escape, she must have ran out of the dorm when someone had left the door open or something," she stopped herself as she realized she was rambling. She smiled sheepishly, "Sorry, I usually don't ramble this much. I'm just very relieved that I found her. And all thanks to you, I really owe you big time. Do you want anything in exchange?" She asked the boy. He really did deserve something after finding Nina, even if he didn't intentionally mean to do it and merely stumbled along a stray cat. Adelaide couldn't be more relieved that she was found by someone who cared enough to bring a lost cat to safety, instead of just leaving it to roam the castle. "I'm Adelaide, by the way. Adelaide Barlowe. It's nice to meet you." During this encounter, she had completely forgotten how dishevelled and half insane she probably looked. She wouldn't be surprised if the boy thought she belonged at St Mungo's, but she couldn't care now that Nina was safe and sound in her arms.

The kitten let out a happy meow and let the tween nuzzle her nose, so Marius believed the student in front of him really was her owner. Cats only let their trusted ones touch their noses. (Oh wait, would that actually make us humans cats' subjects instead of owners? Either way, this cat and this girl knew and liked each other!)
The pupil apologised for what she dubbed a ramble, but to be honest Marius did not think she had been rambling. For the Chinese-English boy, it was a very natural expression of gladness because your initial thought of having lost a loved one proved untrue.
She also introduced herself as Adelaide Barlowe, and offered him some reward for finding her kitten, to which Marius replied, "That won't be necessary, I'm just glad she's safe. Oh, I'm Brown, Marius Brown. I'm a Hufflepuff."
Since Adelaide mentioned her prediction that the cat must have got out when a dorm-mate left the door open, Marius asked, "Has she ever got a chance to get out of the dorm and explore Hogwarts? On her own feet, I mean, not in a carrier. Our cat at home, she used to be kept in the barn so she can eat the mice, but whenever someone opened the door, she'd try to escape. We finally let her out after making sure she wouldn't run away from the farm, and it turns out after maybe three times of letting her going in and out as she pleased, she never tried forcing her way out of the barn again."

"No, I haven't really let her out of the dorm that often. I was mostly afraid that she would get lost, which still ended up happening even though I kept her in my dorm. So I guess that didn't work," She chuckled, "Do you think I should let her explore the castle more often?" She asked Marius, as he seemed to be quite an expert on cats, maybe animals in general as he had mentioned his family's farm. "Maybe I should bring her with me more often if I'm going outside to the courtyard, or to the library. I'm mostly just scared that if I let her out on her own that she won't be able to find her way back to Ravenclaw tower."

Adelaide mentioned that she did not let her kitten out from the dorm very often since she was worried the baby might not find a way back to the room, and Marius gave her an understanding nod. It was a common fear shared among pet owners, and a reasonable one as well. Why, it was not unusual for the Hufflepuff himself to feel that way, not only for his family pets but also to many other animals, including the strays.
However, the Ravenclaw finally decided to take the cat out more often, and Marius smiled gladly at her. "I'm fully agree with you," he sincerely approved her decision. "Taking her out with you sounds good, I think. If I may suggest, let her walk instead of having her carried when you two are out together. Most cats are independent explorers, so they'd prefer to be let go at times. Oh, and especially when they're kittens, they have such a big curiosity!"
Marius was happy he and Adelaide had this chance to talk about cats, something they both liked, but he also slightly regretted that they were not at the same house, with her being a Ravenclaw and him a Hufflepuff. A different house means he would not get the chance to meet the cat often! Ah, but maybe he could see them sometimes when they were out for a walk, and then perhaps Adelaide would let him play with the kitten.

"You're welcome to pet her," She offered to Marius, "She loves to be pet by pretty much everyone, she's quite an attention seeker," Adelaide laughs fondly as she stares at Nina before turning her attention back to the boy in front of her, "Do you have a pet at Hogwarts? I know you mentioned your cat at home, but do you have one of your own? I only recently got Nina over the winter break, so everything is definitely new to me. I've never had a pet of my own before, so it's definitely been a learning curve for the past month." She looked down as she heard a meow and laughed as she watched Nina curiously sniff Marius's shoes.
Now that she wasn't holding Nina, the Ravenclaw done her best to try and smooth down her hair and make herself look more presentable. She'd definitely need to brush her hair once she got back to her dorm because she currently looked as if she had been thrown at the Whomping Willow. One couldn't blame her though, no one was going to look okay after they had been searching half the castle in search for a lost pet.

Marius smiled approvingly when Adelaide let Nina down; if he had been more extroverted than he was, he probably would give her two thumbs up. His brown eyes followed the Silver Siberian kitten as the blonde did exactly the same thing, both first years watching the cat investigated a suit of armour. There was a wonder in such view, a small yet real wonder of a child's real curiosity about anything and everything in this world, even if the child was an animal. (But hey, we human beings were part of the Animalia kingdom as well, were we not?)
The Ravenclaw permitted Marius to pet the young cat, but the boy decided to do so later, when Nina had come back to them. Deciding to let her satisfy (some of) her curiosity, he thanked Adelaide and nodded graciously at her, but did not move even the slightest.
Soon, the two preteens were talking about pets. Adelaide asked Marius if he had any at school, and Marius replied no. Nina was back, so he had the chance to squat and pet her as he continued answering, "But I think I'd do love to have one. Maybe one day, when I have saved enough money for anything a pet may need. I mean... you know, they need their own food; their digestive system isn't programmed to consume human food so we can't just feed them the food prepared by the house elves here at school."
He wondered if he should talk more about what pet he would like to get or something, but then he decided that it would sound too me, me, and me! Thus, instead he asked the girl, "How long has Nina been with you? Have you two known each other for months?"

She shook her head, "Honestly, we haven't actually known each other that long. I got her on the 24th December for a Christmas and birthday present, since my birthday is on Christmas so my parents thought it would be a good idea for Nina to be a present for both," She explained to Marius, "So I've had her for nearly a month. It's kind of shocking that it's only been that long, since I felt like I've had her for years. I just saw her that day in the Magical Menagerie and knew she had to be the one, you know? Something was just telling me that she was meant to be my pet. Does that make sense?" Adelaide wasn't entirely certain whether Marius would understand what she meant, but she hoped he would; even though he wasn't a pet owner, he still clearly loved animals.
Noticing that the majority of this conversation had been about her and Nina, and not wanting to seem too self-absorbed, she redirected the conversation onto Marius, "What sort of pet are you looking? Are you also looking a cat? Or another animal?"

Marius chuckled with Adelaide as the two preteens talked about food, but inwardly, he felt slightly jealous as the Ravenclaw told him her parents could provide whatever Nina may need. From her words, the Chinese-English boy guessed that Adelaide came from a wealthy family - wealthy enough that the girl and her parents might not have to worry whether they could have a proper meal every day and that they had more to spend on pets.
He remembered his own family and how all of them constantly worried if their crop would be successful. Weather was either their best friend or worst enemy, depending on its mood and daily predictability. Birds, mice, gophers, and grasshoppers were foes. Even today at Hogwarts, Marius could clearly visualise in his mind his mum and dad's worried and sad faces as they realised they did not have enough to eat, let alone sell. Although both of them tried very hard to hide this from their children, Marius as the eldest often performed his own stealth to satisfy his curiosity regarding his family situation.
Carefully, the Hufflepuff looked at the Ravenclaw, suddenly getting the feeling that she may be an only child. No, he decided, it wouldn't be fun growing up without a sibling. Suddenly, Marius felt much better. They were not rich, but he could never ask for a better family. Not everyone had parents who were deeply committed to each other like his, and siblings who would stand by yourself no matter how different they were like Alberto and Max.
The preteens talked more about Nina. When Adelaide mentioned that she had got the feeling that Nina was the cat for her the moment the two met, Marius gave her a nod of understanding. While he had never felt the same, he had heard many said the same thing.
