History of Magic was nearing its end when Professor Zahid announced they had a partner project to do this weekend. No one seemed particularly excited by this idea, but Aaron Jones was among those who did not groan. History of Magic was one of his better subjects, so for once he wasn't worried about dragging down his partner. The instructions for the assignment appeared at the front of the room as Professor Zahid began reading off the pairings.Friday | 4 February 2022 | classtime
[this assignment has been approved by Professor Zahid]
"Cassandra Ironwoods and Aaron Jones."Assignment: You and your partner will use the rest of this class period to choose and research a foreign magical government. Please turn in a single scroll at the start of Monday's class highlighting some similarities and differences between them and the British Ministry of Magic.
Upon hearing his pairing announced, Aaron's gaze went from the professor to searching the rest of the room. Cassandra Ironwoods. Of course that name was familiar considering they were in the same year and took the same classes, but even moreso because they were a Quidditch player. There was a time that Aaron knew the names and faces of all Hogwarts' Quidditch players regardless of their year. Although he didn't play anymore, those people he played against were still burned into his memory. He was learning to look back at that time fondly, rather than bitterly.
The fourteen-year-old's brown eyes finally landed on a familiar person sitting towards the back corner of the room, so Aaron gathered his things and got to his feet. He maneuvered around the other students who were finding their own partners, and eventually took a seat at the desk right next to Cassandra. "Looks like we're partners. On the same side, for once, right?" Aaron said, offering a smile. He was referencing the fact that usually they were against each other given Quidditch games and opposing houses.
Aaron had never been so up close to Cassandra before, and upon making eye contact, he noticed that their eyes were a very nice shade of green. That was cool. "So any preference on which country? America's government seems like it may be the easiest to research," Aaron said, breaking eye contact and looking at the textbook he had brought over.
@Cassandra Ironwoods
Aaron has a Calming Presence.Your presence simply puts others at ease, if it is your carefree personality or the trust others have in you, the result is still the same. With you there, perhaps through your encouragement, your allies are able to better focus.

Propping their head on their hand while try not to succumbed into drowsiness was a hard thing to do sometimes when you deal with History of Magic. It was not like the Professor explained it boringly, not it was not the case but Cash just had this a bit of dislikeness towards History of Magic. History of Magic is one of their weakest subjects
Give them a broom or a wand, they will prove to you that Cash is an excellent flyer or spell-casting but when it came down to theoretical classes than hands-on practical ones, Cash needs help in that department though Cash would never admit out loud. Seating in the back of the room while holding their sleepiness is a hard task.
Once or twice their desk mate needs to hit Cash to make them stay alert during the class. Every time their desk mate hit them, Cash threw a glare at them. Time moves slower when in HoM classroom whereas, in other classes, time runs faster. It was nearing the end of the class when Professor Zahid told his class that they had a partner project to do this weekend.
Upon this announcement, the green eyes were more alert. "Seriously?!"They expressed their dislikeness. "Come on, Professor! No project for this weekend, please"Cash exclaimed from the back of the room with some other students that also did not too fond of the idea of a weekend project. It seems only a handful of students did not mind about the said assignment.
It seems Professor Zahid did not pay much into his students' protest as the Professor began distributing one pair after another. Their desk mate gets up from her position as her name is called. She even said good luck to Cash. The green eyes waited a bit longer until their name was called by the Professor. Cash knitted their eyebrow when Professor Zahid paired them off with Aaron Jones.
Cash swore they heard that name before but it has always been a case with Cash where they know the person's name but not their face and vice versa. The young Ironwoods did not make any effort looking for their partner until the boy himself took a seat next to them. "Looks like we're partners. On the same side, for once, right?"The Asian-looking boy said to them and smiled.
Usually, Cash had this knack for annoying people. The type of people that are too cheery for them. Unlike Hanako whom Cash want to punch every time they saw his face, Aaron felt different. Somehow Cash felt calm and their sarcastic tendency lessens than they usually are which is weird. Their green eyes stare into the boys' eyes. They blinked for a moment not knowing what to do or say.
Once the young socialite realized it is rude to stare, they cleared their throat. "Ah yes,"They replied back. Cash felt a bit idiotic with the sense of calmness that engulfed them all suddenly. "If I remember correctly you were once a Quidditch player, right?"They inquired the boy. The Cuban descent remembered they had played against Aaron's house last year.
Playing against Hufflepuff always made them a better Beater. Aaron then asked something that Cash missed out. They still trying to decipher the strange feeling that they felt. They blinked again. "Sorry, what was your saying?"They asked Aaron again with their Spanish-English accent that sometimes comes out without them realizing it.
"So any preference on which country? America's government seems like it may be the easiest to research,"Aaron told Cash then his eyes averted to the book that he carried over. "I do not mind whichever country we need to work on,"They said to the former Hufflepuff's Chaser. "History of Magic never been my forte, you see"They uttered.
For the first time, Cash admits their flaw out loud without someone forcing it out of them. Cash never liked to admit their flaws and never needed others aid until Aaron comes along.

"Yeah, I was a chaser all of last year," Aaron confirmed, nodding in response. He knew that Cassandra was specifically a beater for the Slytherin team. The one time he played against them had ended Hufflepuff's winning streak last year. That was the game where he'd started having doubts about Quidditch, because for the first time he had fouled somebody and ended up on a penalty lap. It was not his fondest memory of the sport. But thinking back to Cash's role in the game, they had been really on their game with the bludgers. They usually were, from what Aaron had seen as a spectator of Slytherin's other games last year.
Aaron repeated what he said when Cassandra asked. He figured maybe they were just lost in their thoughts or something. When they said they didn't care about what country to choose, Aaron started searching through the textbook to find the section on foreign governments. This textbook wouldn't have a ton of information for this particular assignment, meaning they would need to go to the Hogwarts library sometime this weekend to get more resources.
Aaron was not a fan of the library, considering he got lost there more often than not, and he didn't really enjoy doing research. Even for a class he was good in, going above and beyond was not something he did very often. But for a group project he would absolutely do it, since he didn't want to let his partner down. He wondered if maybe Cassandra would have a better understanding of how the library worked.
The fourteen-year-old stopped flipping through the pages when Cassandra mentioned History of Magic was not their forte, and he looked up at them. "I've learned a lot of people aren't big History of Magic fans. I like it just because I'm pretty good at remembering dates and names and historical events. My dad's a history professor, so I think I got it from him," he shared, offering a small smile to hopefully put them at ease. He definitely wasn't judging or anything, since he knew what it was like to not be great in a class.
"I'm pretty awful at all the other classes here, I bet you'd blow me out of the water in a class like Charms," he said, his smile turning a bit more playful. It really wasn't hard for someone to be better than Aaron at classes that involved spells. Most of his spellcasting failed on the first attempt, taking at least two tries to get something to work.
"So, like I mentioned, America will be easy to find more information on, so we should definitely do them. Only thing is we'll need to get more info from the library, probably," Aaron had turned his brown eyes back on the textbook, finally locating the small sections on foreign governments. A quick skim of the page revealed very brief information on it. "The Magical Congress of the United States of America, also known as MACUSA. That's what we'll have to research," Aaron said, pointing to the section in the textbook and then leaning towards Cassandra to show them the page he was referencing. They could either look at his or turn to the same page in their own textbook.

Cash nodded their head when Aaron told them that he was indeed a Quidditch player. A Chaser for the house of Badger, to be exact. "I remembered playing against you and the rest of the Hufflepuff team last year,"They stated. "Sorry not sorry for ending that winning streak, Jones"Cash let out a playful grin.
"Since I am not seeing you on the pitch this year, I assumed you quit the team?"They asked the boy. "Why did you do it?"The young Ironwoods asked the other boy. Cash breathe and live Quidditch and never crossed their mind to leave it, no matter how deathly the game could get. "But if the reason for your leaving the team was a personal matter, I am fine if you do not want to share it with me,"They added some more.
Their parents raised them well. Never pry into someone else's businesses and respected their boundaries. Cash gives Aaron a moment or two for the boy to answer their inquisitions. If Aaron decided to share why he left the team, Cash would attentively listen to his reason. If not, the green eyes will drop the subject and move on to the topic at hand.
Aaron then tells that a lot of people are not History of Magic fans but it was not the case for him since he is good at remembering dates, historical events, and dates. He also told the Cuban descendant that he got it from his father because his father is a History professor. "Lucky for you then"They uttered. Cash tried to remember what their father inherit to them except their love for Quidditch but nothing came up.
"I'm pretty awful at all the other classes here, I bet you'd blow me out of the water in a class like Charms,"Aaron told Cash as a playful smile etched on his lips. "Eh!,"Cash exclaimed unintelligently and shrugged their shoulder. "I mean I am a moderate spell-caster,"They explained. "Some I manage in one go, but most of the time I need a few tries to get it right,"Cash said.
Though Cash is a straight O's student when it comes to Charms class, they still were not that great when it comes down to spell-casting. That was why Cash is a Quidditch player, not a Duellists. At least in Quidditch, all you got to worry about was not being hit by the bludger and taking out the opposing players.
The young socialite watched their HoM partner flipping through his textbook, searching for what he needed. Aaron then told the Beater that America is the easiest foreign magical government to research on but they were required to deep-dive it at the Library. Cash let out a groan. They avoided Library altogether.
But Cash had failed History of Magic before and they will not make a repeat performance of that failure. The ex-Hufflepuff's Chaser then points to a section in his textbook and leans toward the green eyes. The boy pointed to a piece of brief information about The Magical Congress of the United States of America, also known as MACUSA.
The Beater scooted over to the open textbook and did not bother to open their own. Their green eyes darted at the text that was shown in the textbook. It was not much and definitely required some more research and it seems Cash had no other choice to stepped into the Library alongside Aaron. They leaned back after they read what was shown in the test book and looked at the brown-eyed boy.
"You are right!."They said. "The little info the book provided is so little, we can not use it for our research,"They added. "I avoided Library altogether, to be honest. But I failed History of Magic once and will not make the same mistake twice."They told Aaron. "So, the library then?"They inquired the boy. If Aaron got other things to say to Cash, they will sit in their seat.
But if Aaron does not have other things to do at the History of Magic class, Cash will pack up their books and school essentials into their satchel bag and wait for Professor Zahid to dismissed the class so they can move to the library to do the research with Aaron.

Aaron returned the playful grin Cash offered about ending their winning streak. "No hard feelings," he said, shrugging it off. It had been a long time ago, just a couple months shy of a year.
When they correctly guessed that he had quit the team and asked why, Aaron hesitated to share. He had spent a long time hung up on the decision afterwards, and questioning why he didn't want to talk about it with anyone. But the last couple months, especially after winter break, he had made his peace with the decision. He wasn't so touchy about the subject, and now was as good a time as any to test that out. "Yes, I quit at the end of last year," he confirmed. Saying it out loud wasn't as bad as he'd expected, and when they said he didn't have to share if too personal, he shook his head. "No, it's okay, I don't mind," and those words were true. "I can't fully explain it to be honest - I'll always love Quidditch, but the dynamics on the field changed and I didn't like it. So I realized that Quidditch isn't for me anymore - there's too many variables." And by variables he meant too many other players. It was a team sport for sure, and while Aaron did well on a team, he had realized his competitiveness did better when he only had to rely on himself. Plus he wouldn't feel forced to cheat just because he didn't want to let his team down and the captain would approve. "I think I'm figuring out a new passion, though, and it's still flying."
Ever since winter break, Aaron had his Moontrimmer back in his possession and had been flying every chance that he got. He'd been experimenting with combining his flying with some parkour tricks that he picked up. It was still in its very early stages, but Aaron was having a lot of fun with it.
When Cash shared their own troubles with spellcasting, Aaron's eyebrows raised slightly. He didn't often meet others who were so upfront about their troubles with a wand. It was refreshing though, because he didn't feel so bad in comparison. He nodded in understanding, then started flipping through the textbook for the information they needed.
Cash scooted closer to him rather than opening their own textbook, and Aaron almost automatically scooted away. He wasn't used to people he didn't know well being so close to him - or maybe it was something about Cash specifically that made him so aware of how close they were. Either way, he resisted the urge to react and just continued showing the part of the textbook that spoke about MACUSA. Thankfully Cash leaned back after he had shown the passage, and he made eye contact with her.
"I usually avoid the library, as well. You know, I actually managed to avoid it for almost the entirety of first year - I eventually caved though so I could study for exams at the end of the year," Aaron shared, cracking a grin. "But yeah, we can meet in the library, um, tomorrow maybe? After breakfast or something?" Aaron was pretty free that weekend - no real plans except for flying. He looked around the room and saw that other pairings were just chatting at this point, having already made plans to work on their projects. But there was still a bit of classtime left before the professor would dismiss them.
"So, Cash, do you like games? We could play two truths and a lie?" he asked, figuring it would not hurt to get to know the Slytherin better. This was probably their first proper conversation since being here at Hogwarts, outside of occasionally saying hello in classes if they bumped into each other or something. If Cash was unfamiliar with the game he was talking about, he would explain the concept behind two truths and a lie - tell each other three things, two true and one lie. Then the other person would guess which one was the lie. But if Cash seemed to dislike the idea, Aaron would drop it and leave the conversation open to a different direction. Or maybe they'd spend several minutes in silence while waiting for dismissal.
