A Smudge in the Mirror Closed

She had heard rumors of the ghost in the girl's lavatory. Unfortunately for the curious Slytherin, Moaning Myrtle seemed to be absent during Syrah's search. Although disappointed, she figured if the ghost really did exist, the girl had plenty of time to find her. She was going to be at the school for many years to come, and she would certainly be visiting the bathroom again at some point. Her mother, Siliana, swore to the phantoms existence, yet her mother tended to be a little ditsy sometimes, perhaps she simply gave in to common myth.

Shrugging her shoulders, giving up, Syrah exited the last stall in her search and headed toward the sinks to wash up. Careful not to look in the second stall where someone 'forgot' to flush, and remembering to step over that one loose cobblestone in the floor, she approached the sinks, where a large mirror hung above on the grey walls. She stood and stared at the large mirror in front of her as she washed her hands in the cracked sinks. The water was cold and shocking and so her washing as quick. The mirror itself was huge - took over almost the entire wall - very suitable for young women to check themselves out in. Yet, just like the rest of the bathroom, it was cracked, dusty and old.

Syrah understood that the castle was old. Super old. She had no idea how old.  - That reminded her she should probably start reading her Hogwarts, A History textbook. - But the castle was obviously still in extreme use. The school had to have a janitor of some kind to clean the lavatory on a regular basis. Or at least, this was a magic school after all, surely there exist a ton of cleaning spells some witch or wizard could cast in a jiff to clean and fix this place up a bit. She wondered if the boys bathroom looked anything like this. She sure hoped so or else there would be some questions to ask.

Leaning in, resting her abdomen on the sink edge, she peered into the ancient glass trying to see her own reflection. She could see it, of course, the mirror wasn't that dirty. At the very least she could see hand marks where previous girls had wiped away grime to get a better view of themselves. But still the glass was covered in tiny puncture marks that had yet to split and dirt to stuck even her small fingernail couldn't scratch it off. She wiped her hands on her robes, uncomfortable with the dusty texture.

Higher up on the mirror and in some more reasonable corners and edges, some girls chose to write messages in the dust. Most were stupid jokes, some were Myrtle sightings and others were mean messages about others. Syrah didn't recognize any names though. Continued to stretch her neck to read all the writings, Syrah tried to think of something she could write. She didn't have much of a sense of humor and hadn't seen anything of Moaning Myrtle and didn't really know anyone well enough to write anything bad - or good. So, instead she was left staring deeply into an old mirror on the wall.

Cassie hurried down the dimly lit corridor, hopelessly trying to find her way around the maze that was Hogwarts School.
All she wanted was the lavatory but of course being a brand new student in a rather large new school meant she was struggling to find it. She rounded a corner, artfully dodging a suit of armour and gasped with relief. Just down there were the girls bathrooms.
“Oh, thank god.” She gasped.
Cassie rushed towards the double doors that stood at the end of the corridor, not quite running but not quite walking either. If anyone was to see her they might have likened her pace to that of a horse trotting and she looked rather silly as she did it. In her haste to enter the lavatory she failed to realise what floor bathroom she was heading into.
Cassie burst through the door, allowing it to bang against the wall as it flew open. She didn’t waste any time as she headed straight for the first available stall she saw and slammed the wooden door behind her, only just remembering the lock.
She sighed in relief, thanking merlins beard that she’d made it in time. The last thing she needed was to be known as the girl who peed herself.
After she was done she tugged at her robes so they fell neatly to the floor, unlocked the door and headed for the sink to wash her hands.
As Cassie left the stall she noticed two things directly after one after the other.
1. There was someone else in this bathroom.
2. They were staring straight at her.

Syrah jumped a bit in surprise as someone slammed into the girl's lavatory. Thankfully the girl didn't seem to notice her as she rushed into the nearest stall to take care of business. This gave Syrah some time to seek out before the girl finished and came to wash her hands. Though she figured she had a tiny bit of time, peeing takes more than a few seconds for girls usually. So she took one last look at the dusty mirror and its writings. Suddenly, though, movement caught her eye. For a second she took a quick glance behind her, assuming, since this was a mirror, the movement came from behind, perhaps another student walking in. But it only took a second to realize that no one was there and nothing besides her self had moved. She looked back at the mirror, peering at the place she perceived the movement and focused. It was still there, the action, but it wasn't coming from behind her. It wasn't even a reflection in the mirror. The dust as moving. There was no wind nor a brush of a curtain or breath that could be moving the dust, and as she continued to watch she saw that a pattern was forming. Nothing super artistic or interesting, it just looked like someone was dragging their finger curiously through the grime out of boredom. But yet there was no one, no finger, nothing that could me moving this dirt from the mirror. Syrah froze, staring at the continuing lines.

A loud noise broke both Syrah out of her stupor and the lines from moving anymore. It was a flush of the toilet, and Syrah snapped her head to the noise. It seemed the flush spooked whatever was drawing too because that stopped suddenly as well and Syrah felt a cold swoosh fly past her back towards the stalls. The window at the end of the corridor of stalls had a small, ragged and ripped curtain hanging from it, and a few moments after the cool wind passed her, she saw the curtain flick like it too felt the shiver. Syrah was back in her frozen state, staring at the hanging cloth. Was she making this all up in her mind? Or was there really a ghost in the stalls like her mother told her?

When the other girl in the bathroom exited the toilet she was frequenting, it would be easy to mistake Syrah as staring right at her, when it reality Syrah was staring past her, still at the curtain that continued to sway slightly. The presence of this other student shook her from her frozen state only after a few seconds. "Did you see that?" She asked, her voice full of both wonder and fear.

Did you see that?

Cassie frowned in confusion at the odd question that left the girls mouth. She took a moment to study her short dark hair and the dark eyes that contrasted nicely with her pale skin. She noticed the green serpent embroidered into the girls robes indicating she was from Slytherin house.

Cassie turned her attention back to the question and shook her head slowly. “See what?

She felt a small shiver run down her spine and she could feel an odd change in the atmosphere. The air had turned cold and now that she wasn’t preoccupied with the need to pee, Cassie glanced around at her surroundings.

It was definitely the girls bathroom but there was something different about it to the others Cassie had previously visited.
The sinks were coated in a thin layer of grime and dust lay on every surface.
She noticed a large mirror that had specks of chipped glass that threatened to turn into cracks at the smallest touch. This bathroom seemed like it should have been closed a long time ago but she’d just used the toilet so it was clearly in use?

Hold on, is this the fifth floor girls bathroom?” Cassie asked, her voice a mixture of awe and just a hint of fear.

She turned to look over at where the girl was still looking with an expression that matched Cassie’s almost exactly.
As far as she could see she there wasn’t that much to look at. Just a ripped curtain hanging from the end of the corridor of stalls.

Cassie turned back to the girl, her hands twitching with a sense of excitement. She’d heard rumours of the ghost girl in the toilets and she’d read about her in Hogwarts, A History but she’d never been sure whether to believe them or not. Maybe now she was about to find out for sure.

Did you see her?...Did you see Moaning Myrtle?”

Syrah snapped back to attention when the girl that appeared in the bathroom mentioned Moaning Myrtle. She shook her head quickly, not just at the girl, but at herself. Silly, she was simply imagining things. Its an old Castle, there's probably weird drafts coming from everywhere and nowhere. "No. Ah.. Nope. No." She repeated dumbly before turning back to the sink to preoccupy herself once more. She turned the water on and began washing her hands before realizing she had already done so. She shook her head at herself again, turned off the water and shook her hands out at her sides quickly before wiping them on her robes.

Looking at the girl again, closer this time, she saw that the girl was around her age, probably a first year too. Her robes had some blue and gold on them... Ravenclaw. Ravenclaws are supposedly the smart ones right? So why did this girl seem so excited about the mere thought of a ghost? Surely this girl knew there was no 'Moaning Myrtle' in this bathroom and that is was simply a rumor that young kids liked to spread. Oh great, she thought, this girl is going to continue that tradition.

"Look," She began, ready to try and quell this rumor she could see starting in this girl's eyes, "It was nothing, just an unexpected draft or something. Nothing." She repeated. Looking this girl straight in the eyes she tried her hardest to sound convincing, both to the girl and herself.

Feeling a little disappointed, Cassie nodded. She wasn’t fully convinced by the girls explanation and she had a feeling the girl wasn’t either.

I just read that she hangs around out here.” Cassie explained, feeling a little silly.
She couldn’t help it. Out in the muggle world she had always been interested in the supernatural and would often seek out old buildings or abandoned schools or cemeteries in the hopes of finding something. Cassie’s mother had always warned her that seeking out those kind of entities could be dangerous but Cassie had always put that down to old superstition (not knowing at the time of her mothers magical heritage). It wasn’t like she ever found anything anyway.

When she’d read about the ghosts of Hogwarts in her history books she was more than a little excited at the thought of meeting an actual ghost but she supposed when she thought about it, it did seem a little childish.

Not meeting the other girls eyes for fear of being mocked, Cassie headed over to the sink to wash her hands as she had forgotten to do so in the excitement of a possible ghost sighting. She turned the tap, slowly letting the water fall over her hands before going for the soap. As she did so she looked up into the mirror out of habit.

Argh!

Cassie jumped back almost instantly, knocking straight into the Slytherin girl but she didn’t notice. She was too preoccupied  with the large pair of eyes that had been staring back at her in the mirror. Cassie could feel her hands shaking as she frantically searched the filthy mirror for the person that had been staring back at her but there was nothing. Just her own reflection and  the reflection of the other girl.

There was someone in that mirror! Staring at me, I saw it!” She cried, not caring that she sounded slightly hysterical.

The girl seemed to accept Syrah's explanation at first. That was good, she did not want to get in a debate right now about 'ghosts'. She was ready to turn and leave the bathroom as the other student headed to the sink to finish washing her hands when the girl shrieked. Syrah spun around quickly only to be met with a terrified look on the girls face, who was still staring into the mirror on the wall, Syrah's shocked face fell a little, was this chick messing with her?

She was beginning to feel uneasy. She didn't like the cold atmosphere of the bathroom or the cracks mirror or the grime on every imaginable surface. And she certainly didn't want to continue with this ghost charade, or the tricks this other girl might be making. She frowned, angry, frustrated and slightly frightened. She looked at the girl one more time, her robes - blue and gold. Thankfully not Slytherin, less chance she'll see the girl again any time soon. Now was the time.

She looked the girl straight in the eyes. Trying to be as serious as possible and not let any faltering of fear or anger seep through she stated, "Not funny. I'm out of here." And with that she turned and fled out the bathroom doors. She stopped for a second right outside the door to shake her head and gather her composure. Her emotions were confusing to her right now. They were a mix of anger and frustration at what she was trying to convince herself was a prank done by that girl. Ravenclaws always think they are better than everyone else. Just like the Gryffindors, she thought. And also slight fear because what if, and again she was actively trying to avoid thinking this, what if is really was Moaning Myrtle?

I don't want Syrah to get acquainted with Myrtle just yet, so I think I'll let it end there! Plus I think this is how Syrah would react in this situation so it works. I know it was a short thread, but it was one of my first here so I think its pretty good. You can continue on if you want but Syrah's gone back to her Common Room.
Hopefully Syrah and Cassie meet up soon. And hopefully exchange names this time!
