XXXXThe holiday season fast approaching meant the obligatory letter home to Maggie's mother. Which was normally fine, as she would send one every single year at the all-girls boarding school which she had attended prior to Hogwarts, but this year was different. Hogwarts was big and vast and there was just so much to do already. Maggie was completely enrapt in the magical life now and hardly had any time whatsoever for muggle ventures, like writing home.

Plus, the trek up to the owlery, especially in the month of December, was slick and boasted all the danger of a battlefield. The steps, ordinarily dry and littered with straw that had been trailed from within the owlery itself, were now frozen over with pools of ice that made the walk to deliver your letters daunting and dangerous. Plus, the flurries that fell from the sky got all over your hands and letters and clothes, melting and making the paper soggy, the words running together.

So no, Maggie was not looking forward to delivering her letter.

Without an owl of her own, Maggie would have to use one of the screwy little school-provided owls. Old fellas who had advanced far beyond their heyday, past their expiration date. Cute buggers but certainly not in any position to be flying from Scotland to Ireland in search of the O'Shaughnessy family home. Maggie had the letter tucked into the fold of her jacket, held safe between fingers that were carefully covered in the knitted fabric of her gloves. The pair of jeans was a bit thin for winter, but Maggie tended to pack light. Which was just another word for her characteristic forgetfulness.

"Hey, hey, calm down," she hissed as she entered the owlery itself, met with the indignant squawks and chirps of the owls contained within. Little irritations. If Maggie ever did get herself a pet, it would surely not be an owl. "You see me plenty, don't you? No need to get all snippy with me."

Avery walked up the stairs towards the owlerly, silently cursing the lack of elevators in the old, magic building. Tucked away in the girl's pocket, was a letter to send home to her parents. Nothing too sentimental, just sharing the logistics of getting home for the holidays, timings, and addresses, and such.

Stepping up the last few stairs, Avery hears a girl (or at least a more feminine) voice trying to soothe the owls. The first year smiles to herself, they are pesky creatures and Avery would not want one for herself.

Entering the owlerly, Avery takes in the other student. She has a look about her, one that Avery feels a kinship towards, one that Avery is drawn towards. Deciding to start up a conversation as she looks for an hour to fasten her letter too, she speaks. "They never know how to stay quiet do they?" Avery walks closer to an owl and ties the letter around its leg with some twine, "Is one of them yours?"

As she waits for a reply, Aver mutters her address to the bird and sets it off in search of Oxford, in search of the Gallows family house. Than, she sends a smile to the girl, "Avery Gallows by the way."

XXXXThe approach of someone else, another girl, startled Maggie from the reverie she had worked herself into. Absently, she turned to face Avery, give her fuller attention. "What? I mean," she looked to the owl at the side, used her head in a scooping motion to gesture towards it. "No. Absolutely not. I hate this little guy, honestly. Not mine."

What? It was honest, which was one of the best qualities!

Still, the owl Maggie had picked out was something that reflected her own lesser qualities. The old barn owl looked a bit disgruntled, messy, with feathers so scruffy he looked like he'd yanked them out of a chest. Paralleled her own brown hair, often a mop atop her head, like a wig pulled deep from a closet.

"If I did have a pet, it wouldn't be one of these," she commented, fixing the letter to the leg of the owl. "No offense, bud."

Attention was turned to one of the big open windows in the tower, where snow was drifting in and fixing itself to the floor, littered with straw and melting snow. Any longer and the ground would surely become something of a pool, waiting to trip someone up and laugh as they slid down the stairs. "Where's yours off to?" In reference to the letter, of course.
