Elena had thought a cat, a rabbit or a owl too. They all classfied as the typical norm for pets that people would bring but you occasionaly had the odd apple out that defied the odds with more bolder creatures and in Adlai's case, it happened to be a snake which she supposed made sense given the Hufflepuff's ability to talk with the thing quite literally. The brunette could ony just assume what Flutters said to her through hoots, the flap of his wings and his eyes but she reckoned she got it right the majority of the time or the Gryffindor was sure the barn owl would have voiced his protester sooner than later. "Better keep away from Flutters then, owls and snakes tend to have not have the bestest of friendships, I hear." She replied joking slightly but she wouldn't put it past her own feathered friend to snatch up Dafina and that was something she wasn't willing to visit.

"I like it, imagnative." It certainly was more creative than Flutters and now that Elena thought about, she never really had pondered why she had named her owl that. She attributed the reason to his big, brown feathers that seemed to flutter in the wind from time to time and that was a good enough reason for her. She was glad though the sibling duo had gotten a pet, a pet was like a part of you, you couldn't go about your time here without one. Well, you could but she couldn't imagine doing such a thing. A pet was like your best friend. understood your problems, your issues and voiced it's undying loyalty and support in perilous times, it was something everyone needed to have. It was more than just a pet, they were your personal cheerleader and she smiled faintly at the thought.

Though, Elena had to admit the word friend did not come to mind when thinking about a snake and that begged a question she had to ask. "Have you shown her to anyone yet. No one's run out of the common room screaming when they saw a snake, right?" She grinned to imply the jest behind her words though a few names did pop to mind when thinking about who would do such a thing. Elena herself would probably be one of those culprits, it was just something about those type of creatures that put her on edge, maybe the way they flicked out their forked tongue or something else, still, if it worked for Adlai and Dorothy then so be it. There were far worse things out there than a snake and if a snake worked as a companion for them then it was good enough for Elena too, from a relatively safe distance though, she wasn't exactly a fan of coming into contact with a creature who had a reputation for some rather gruesome incidents. and whatnot.

"Aw man, I never thought of that. I was hoping they could have been friends, guess not then." Adlai said after Elena had stated that owls and snakes didn't get along. She hadn't known why she thought Flutters and Dafina could have been friends, after all it was common knowledge that owls ate snakes. She was a bit embarrassed by the confession due to how outlandish it was in the eyes of nature. Dorothy merely nodded to Elena before she brought up another good point.

"OH NO- I haven't done that yet!" Adlai exclaimed. "I'm not close with anyone in Hufflepuff house, even my roommate. She and I have only spoken a handful of times." She explained. "I really should hop on that next time I have her, that would be awful if some kind of panic broke out because of my neglect."

"Anyway... speaking of Flutters how is he? Hopefully getting plenty of rest and staying warm. It'll be pretty cold for the next couple months and I'd feel terrible if he got sick from having to run letters too and from Hogwarts. Wait-" Adlai thought to herself for a moment, "can owls even get sick from bad weather?" She looked to Dorothy for an answer and Dorothy only shrugged.

She simply nodded serenly at Adlai's exclamation. While Flutters had a gentle heart and he didn't go out of his way to cause disruptions, he was first and foremost an owl and sometimes, animal instincts could take over. Personally, Elena herself wasn't a huge fan of snakes either but still, if that was what made Adlai feel at ease than Elena wouldn't be one to judge, she just had to make sure her owl never laid eyes on the poor thing or she would have a lot of explaining to do for Adlai on why her precious little snake had ended up in Flutters' beak if he ever got a chance. "Maybe in another world but I'd rather not take the risk of my bird mistaking Dafinia for a midnight snack or something." She said making a face at the thought, that would be an awkward situation indeed.

On the other hand, she was beginning to feel very sorry for Adlai's dorm-mate whoever she might be. The thought of having a snake slither through the darkness while you slept was not a very comforting one. "I'm sure it'll be fine, she's not poisonous, is she?" The brunette said, her tone mixed between reassuring her friend and uncertainity not wanting to know the answer to the question. Surely, the Hufflepuff girl wouldn't in her right mind bring something that dangerous to Hogwarts but she had no doubt the girl would be able to control her pet well. She after all could speak Parseltongue and that was enough for the Gryffindor to respect her all that more as the topic of converstation shifted away from snakes and to something more friendlier like her feathered friend.

Flutters had accepted Adlai as a friend, a rare reward and perhaps in time, he'd grow to see Dorothy the same way. "He's doing marvelous, just being spoiled, not like we get that many letters from Mum and Dad as it is." Her smile threatened to waver at the confession but she forced the thoughts out of her mind as she continued on, the question a curious one. If owls could get sick, she certainly hadn't seen so, either that or they put on a very good show of concealing it. "Well, I don't know if they can get sick but they can certainly have mood swings and trust me, you'll know when Flutters is grumpy, he's pecked me enough by now." Still, owls had a personality to them that the girl liked and that was why she kept him around and personally, a far more safer option than snakes but to each their own as she smiled down at Dorothy.

"Maybe I'll introduce him to you one day, yeah? He's already practically best buds with your sister."

"Dafina is the same way! She's doesn't like to be told what to do, so she's sassy in that aspect and she seems to pay attention whenever something dramatic is going on around her, so I think she might be a bit of a drama seeker in a way." Adlai stated. "Animals truly have personalities of their own, I can't wait to see more of Dafina's."

Dorothy simply nodded to Elena. Adlai nodded along with her, knowing her sister wasn't the biggest fan of birds regardless of her being head over heels in love with their families pet bird a few years back before they went missing.

Not wanting the conversation to die out due to Dorothy's lack of speech, Adlai began to speak once again. "I miss flutters, I need to go and see him again soon. Not to mail a letter but to just say hi and give him some affection, I'm sure he deserves it despite his being spoiled." How you could possibly spoil a beloved pet, Adlai wasn't sure but she was sure that Flutters was turned rotten from it, he was the sweetest owl she knew and had frankly ever met.

Pets, Elena thought were funny little creatures. Like humans, they had personalites and you had to find the right one that clicked with you, they were like your best non-human friends or at least, that was how she viewed Flutters. Adlai was right about one thing, the barn owl was certainly spoiled with all the treats and smothering of affection he got but he was also fiercely loyal, he had proven that on various occassions time and time again so she supposed it was a healthy balance you had to strike with the creatures. To be perfectly honest, the brunette didn't think there was such a thing as spoiling a snake, if it decided it was done with you, it could simply curl around you and introduce you to those gleaming fangs, the thought almost made her want to shudder.

She grinned at Adlai. "Sometimes, I think he prefers you over me, got to make sure he doesn't fly away with you." She joked. It was rare for Flutters to accept anyone else as a friend, she had been surprised herself when he hadn't protested at Adlai's touch, the bird regarded her as one of his own coming to the assumption that if Elena trusted the girl, he was good enough for her. Although, she suspected that may have been due to the fact that perhaps Adlai was more forthcoming with treats and whatnot than the Gryffindor might have been, spoiled bird that he was though she didn't really mind. An owl in a bad mood was a nightmare, the hoots of protest, pecking and Merlin knew what else but even creatures played favorites apparently and Adlai was in Flutter's good books.

An idea suddenly hit her as she sat up a little straighter glancing at the two of them. "We could always take a trip down to the Owlery if you guys have time, see what he thinks of Dorothy.." It was common knowledge between the two friends that they could use Elena's owl for whatever needs they wanted and as a gesture of goodwill, she wanted to extend that offer to Dorothy as well but first, Flutters would have to set his eyes on any newcomer and if they weren't in the company of Elena, getting him to accept a new person would be virtually impossible and plus, perhaps this way, she would be able to get to know Adlai's younger sister a bit more. Snakes couldn't deliver letters but owls could, she saw no cons in this perfect plan of hers involing a trip to a tower full of owls.

"I doubt our parents would be happy about me bringing another animal home. You should have seen their faces when I came home with Dafina after an outing with my aunt. My poor mother looked like she had seen a ghost, she was never very keen on snakes. That's part of the reason she liked us living in Iceland since they are none there."

"My dad on the other had was very interested, just upset that we didn't consult them on the snake before purchasing it. I had to swear that Dafina would be my responsibility and that I'd look after her properly because my mother surely wasn't going to do it." Adlai laughed at the memory. She really should have thought ahead when it came to bringing Dafina home, though her aunt was extremely insistent on the two girls bringing the reptile home.

"I think that's a great idea!" She exclaimed as Elena gave the suggestion to go up to the owlery to see Flutters with Dorothy. "I do think we should be careful up there though, I mean you remember what happened last time, right? I'm just surprised I haven't heard of anyone getting hurt of there before." Adlai said, as she recalled her and Elena's tumble in the owlery last year.

If Elena had brought home anything with fangs, antennas or even remotely looked like it would be well off in the Amazon rainforest instead of the picture-perfect mansion that made up the Jangleton estate, she could only imagine the shrieks and looks of horror on her mother's face followed by the well-placed curses that would follow by her father. Darren would probably think it was cool though but still, a snake seemed like a pretty important thing that you would consult your family on but then again, Dafina seemed like the type of creaure that didn't go about just terrifing the wits about anyone, just minding her own buisness. Her brother often said they were just misunderstood creatures and she could understand that approach to a perspective.

She grinned looking between the two girls. "I have a brother who'd treat Dafina like a queen. Darren's a magizoologst by profession and he loves all the scary creatures, he tried to bring a baby hippogriff home once but Mum and Dad weren't having it." She decided to leave out how the blasted thing had almost attempted to break down the door to their kitchen but somehow, Elena found she wouldn't mind it at all if if took her parents down a notch because Merlin knew best they were entirely too full of themselves to even take into account that maybe they needed to start becoming some decent human beings but that was a far thought much to her disappointment.

She nodded heeding Adlai's warning. Both of them knew all too well what had happened and you would think Hogwarts would invest in some guardrails or something but the brunette knew all too well the emphasis they placed on student safety if the balls and the train crash was anything to go by. That wasn't to say the professors were bad people, she just thought the castle could do a far better job of working on that particular angle. "Who could forget? Reckon we'll be alright though, we got the boss here to look after us." She said nodding towards Dorothy with an grin.
