"No." Caradoc sighed, not daring to make meet the boy's gaze in the well of shame that sprouted within his chest. "No, I suppose I couldn't." He was always trying to fix things, but he was never fast enough to prevent them from happening. He recalled when he and Erin were spending her detention together. Back then, she had presented him a list of missing people. He recalled Solomon's grave warnings of how an attack on the school would be imminent, and while he seemed to be ahead of the curve back then, they surely had lost any advantage by now. Caradoc had taken too long to catch up with the facts. Hogwarts was drenched in misery because of it.

The Head of Hufflepuff closed his eyes and held out his hand once more. He tuned out all the shouting and fighting going on around him, trying to focus on the one thing he knew he could do. "Episkey." Doc whispered as his fingers weaved a subtle pattern in the air. "Let's just make sure Erin makes it out of here alive." He said, more to himself than to anyone else. Trying to focus on the next step rather than trying to peer into the fatal future that likely lay ahead for some of those present here.

Hugh let go of the crying Hufflepuff at the sound of an adult calling his name. Ah, woe the rulebreakers. "Where are my manners." The part-giant said soothingly as he patted Gideon's arms, smoothening the folds of his sleeves. Hugh would smile gently and stare into the boy's eyes, who were glistening with crocodile tears. Throwing that little tantrum was a neat trick. All eyes on the big guy ready to crack bones. Hugh might have been a fool, but he wasn't a stupid fool. But that damage had already been done a while ago. To Lowe, Gideon was ringing his bell way too late.

The huge Gryffindor would turn his head and smile at the professor who felt so inclined in ordering him around. Not saying a word in return, he'd just nod in agreement. Of course he'd agree. After all, he was meant to be a good little boy and do as he was told, right? There was no chance a professor would have it all wrong, they had been doing a swell job of handling the situation so far, right? Hugh's heart was boiling a thunderstorm inside that copper helmet of his. It felt deafening. And as he counted down the thumping rhythm echoing through his skull, he felt like there was nothing left to do but smirk. "Try and stop me then."

With as much speed and accuracy as he could muster, Hugh's hands would lash out towards Gideon. If the part-giants fingers found their mark, Gideon's face would break into a far more menacing grin. And in this moment, Hugh was ready to hunt the weakling down.
Action: Break Gideon's limbs.

The Storm

As chaos reigned over the Earth, so too did it govern the heavens. The storm had shown no sign of calming down, despite its length now stretching into hours. Thunder, rain and wind continued to strike at each student, words lost to the sound of the tempest, water striking skin and clothing, leaving the unfortunate ballers drenched with the rage of the sky itself.

Breaking Skulls

Hugh Lowe had noticed something entirely unusual, even more unusual than the destruction and blood that was being wrought by the hag slugs. Truthfully, attacks by creatures of dark and twisted magic could probably no longer be classified as unusual, at least as far as Hogwarts was concerned. However, the sight of a small child collecting body parts and bone from both human and slug alike was still peculiar enough. The part-giant would see to ensuring that the boy could no longer act in a way that was untoward. In spite of Gideon Athanatos’s tears, be they crocodilian or genuine, the tall boy would grab the blonde’s head with his enormous hands. Then, with a sickening crack, he would break the first year’s skull, with as much ease as if he were cracking a walnut.

By Far the Worst Thing to Happen at the Ball

Howard White had Erin Ryan pinned, the bleeding and crazed girl could not escape from the beater’s grasp. No matter whether she thrashed or flung her strength against that of the Hufflepuff, she could not break free. Alas, her thrashing had a far more malicious intention than merely wriggling out of danger. She kicked and her kick found purchase, purchase in the worst possible place. Howard would suffer a blow to his most sensitive region, and no doubt his grip would weaken ever-so-slightly as he fought back the inevitable waves of nausea. Yet, for the moment, Erin remained pinned down, and spells would surely follow soon after.

Erin Saving Squad

Keeping Erin Ryan alive had become the goal of many of the students and teachers present at the festival. The girl was clearly injured, and she was even more clearly outside of her right mind. Pinned as she was, however, she could not escape from the spells flung toward her. Serena Towers, Caradoc Browne and Orion Lecuyer each took the opportunity to cast espikey at the girl who could generously be described as quirky, and not at all like the other girls. Jack Burnett, the boy whom she had slugged so recently in the face, instead opted to ensure that her wounds were appropriately bandaged. Fortunately, her writhing had not re-opened the wounds, and the bandages served only to ensure that the wounds remained snugly bound and not open and gushing with lifeblood.

The Last of the Slugs

Whilst the others focused on the host of the slugs, albeit a host now bereft of guests, some students instead opted to aim their ire toward the creatures that appeared to be the crux of the issues of the night. Galton Lansdale acted first, freezing the slug in a block of ice through use of the glacius charm. Unfortunately, the beast struggled against the ice, and after a few scant seconds it broke through, albeit considerably slowed by its time frozen. Further, that time had allowed the other students to move to attack. Students and rat, for Pizza Rat set forth, his teeth sinking into slug flesh. Juniper Kelly struck out after the animal did, aiming to stomp on the mollusc. Alas, she found naught but grass as the creature slithered away from her and darted its bite toward her friend. Fortunately, Lin Evanvleck was able to dodge the attack, the slimy creature once more finding naught but air. In seconds, it was once more set upon by Xailah Alptraum, the metamorph slicing at the beast with deftness of purpose. Selim Faust would follow, biting the slug with his peculiar hand puppet. Although, the creature did manage to slip out of his grip.

"Of all the wonders that I yet have heard, it seems to me most strange that men should fear seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come."- William Shakespeare's 'Julius Caesar'
▁ ▂ ▄ ▅ ▆ ▇ █ ||~♟~|| ▇ ▆ ▅ ▄ ▂ ▁

In the chaos of the festival, Selim did somehow manage to clamp down on the slug. After swerving around the other students plus a rat that charged towards the slug he too soon pounced on it, accuracy not failing him despite the rain. Aku's open maw crashed down onto the leech. fangs digging in deep to its unnatural hid. Selim felt the effects, the skin splitting, then dragging deep as the slug struggled and forcefully pulled itself out of there, leaving behind decently deep gashes. It slipped out of his grip though, and his eyes narrowed as he noted the effectiveness of the knife. If only he had his on him.

Still despite his justifiable worries of attacking the slug head-on, he escaped bruised, but unharmed. His peers had this handled, and he had tried, but a commotion behind him caught his attention through the torrent of water.

Still in a crouch, his head snapped around as he heard Prof. Orian call out, and he saw just in time how the situation with the first year and the giant had escalated dangerously. His pupils contracted as he watched the giant's hands clamp around the crying boy's skull. He could tell something as off with the smaller boy, his crying seeming insincere, reminding him of his cousins in his birth family trying to get him in trouble with their crocodile tears. The boy had probably been antagonizing his upperclassmen going by what snippets of personality that he caught from the teeth-collecting boy.

Selim himself didn't care if the boy was antagonizing the giant, his mind had switched into an unwelcome, familiar mode. It was running like a machine rather than a human, and all he could do in the high-stress situation was focus on facts, logic, and analysis with a mission-oriented focus. He'd fallen back on some old... 'training' he supposed. Yes, all he saw in his one-track mind as he watched the rather brutal attack, was a new threat. Not a mild student quarrel that wasn't terribly life-threatening thanks to professors being nearby and magic existing.

Brain's cogs whirring, he recalled the books he used to read out of mere intrigue on injuries. With it summoned up in his mind, he began to try and sort his memories with the help of his now-ichor-covered puppet companion. Everything felt like a haze, his eyes were almost dull-seeming, drained of energy, personality, yet still sharp with alertness.

"Injury assessment: Skull fracture. Type: depressed fracture. Symptoms?" Selim droned with a level voice.

"Dizziness, confusion, poor memory, lethargy, headaches, swelling in the head, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, seizures, weakness and numbness, bruising behind the ears or under the eyes, leaking of clear body fluid from the ears or nose." The puppet responded, Selim's finger twitched.

"Closer assessment needed, high-risk injury. Is the threat higher then the leech?"

"Due to our peers' assistance the leech should be neutralized soon. Our help is unneeded." The rabbit commented.

The skull-faced boy nodded. "Noted. New target found. New mission; neutralize target, assist victim with first aid. Possible allies; Prof. Orian. Supplies?"

"Bandages, disinfectant, tea. Supplies low. May need to stand by for more personnel." The puppet responded robotically.

"Noted, mission adjusted. Neutralize threat, assist victim to the best of our capabilities. Defend victim while on stand-by for personnel. Order of operations may vary depending on the situation. Vulnerable points found; Calcaneal tendon, extensor pollicis longus tendons, long head tendons, short head tendons. Primary vital point; calcaneal tendon, commonly referred to as Achilles Tendon. Injury severity; low with future magical treatment. NO lethal force to be used. Proceed with the mission."

With that odd discussion over, Selim locked on target, stowing Aku away and pulling out his dual steel chopsticks. Tensing his muscles and honing his senses to avoid being caught by the target he sprung forward, charging at the giant. Upon coming closer he aimed low, sliding with a sharp shift in his weight and attempting to sever both Achilles tendons with his primitive, yet effective weapons, just as he had trained himself to do to threats many times in the past.

With no magical skill to use against the larger boy, all he could do was fall back on old, more brutal tactics of neutralizing opponents. Which for some reason were frowned more upon in the magical world despite a decent amount of hexes that seemed no different to Selim than physical attacks.
Whether or not his attack hits; he'll continue sliding and then dig his heels in to stop in a combat-ready crouch and calculate his next move depending on the outcome.

It wasn't over yet. It wasn't over yet. Why wasn't it over yet? It seemed the horrific night she and her could-have-been dancing partner, Thomas, would never end. Would Erin die here today? All of the Episkeys and Ferulas being thrown about made it clear the other wizards and witches fighting for their own safety felt the same. Demonic slug after slug ripped itself through Erin's broken maw, much to the upset of Sylvie's stomach. It wasn't pretty. Had the healing spells patched the numerous holes lining her mouth, or were they visible as the beast made its way out and the Slytherin girl gurgled and screamed against blood and bile? Whatever the case, Sylvie would be disgusted by the sight. Her eyes were wide and crazed, despite her feeling ever so tired. Perhaps it was fear. After all, Sylvie had only gotten involved at the sight of bullying. And attempted murder.

She'd no idea what could possibly become of Erin, not truly. She'd heard stories, muggle and of the wizard variety, about hags. Dreadful, wicked creatures. Much like the vicious mollusks that squelched their way from Erin's esophagus... That couldn't truly happen, could it? A person, a human being.

She shook the thought from her frazzled head as she felt a touch on her shoulder and the voice of the Slytherin Head of House. She had asked if she was sure if Sylvie was alright, but Sylvie didn't answer. Sylvie wasn't alright. Physically, sure she would live, having received but a chomp from the slug that had attacked her, but how was she faring in the face of everything else? Not well. Sylvie hated the feeling of fear. The feeling of helplessness, despite being fully capable. She hated that her wand seemed slick in her hand, due to the rain and clamminess of her palms, the product of her nerves.

"This is not over yet. Keep your wands up,"

Right. It wasn't over yet. God only knew if another one of those... Things, were gonna climb out of Erin. She nodded. "Yes, Ma'am... Diffindo!" She only wanted it to be over and done with, and the least she could do was try and help. Her wand hadn't failed her thus far, and hopefully it wouldn't start now.

Howard charged. His long, muscular legs propelled him forward as red eyes locked with Erin Ryan's. For so long this action would have been fueled by aggression and violence as the pair did their best to destroy each other. Bound by darkness the two always seemed pitted against one another, but this night was different. It would be the light that now powered the young man as he barreled towards the Slytherin. Once again and in rare fashion she would attempt to stop him and Selim with a flick of the wand. The spell would land and the ground below them would soon turn to an oil slick. His younger comrade would unfortunately miss the mark, but Howard's aim still rang true as he and Erin crumbled to the ground. Holding the girl would take all of his strength, but in this moment he would best her.

The flashing of spells would erupt around them as many more would come to her aid. Some would aim to heal while others made the final push the rid the girl of the slugs once and for all. Howard would do his best to keep hi s focus as Erin's toothless and bloodied mouth was forced open for a third time. Grunts of exertion and disgust would escape Howard's lips as the vile black creature was expelled along with a fresh wave of bodily fluids. He prepared himself for the fight to come. One last slug and they might save.....

"HUMPH!!" Howard grunted as pain tore through his groin. His expression a mixture of pleading and terror. His grip on Erin would fall slack as he instinctively rolled away from the source that threatened to destroy and chance of little Dhampir babies. Howard's body went through many things at once. A sickening feeling spread through his gut. His mouth would open in a gasp as he felt the urge to vomit, but nothing would come. He didn't know whether to roll over and cry or run in circles in a mad attempt to avoid the pain, but in his most desperate moment his eyes would catch site of the slug breaking through the protective barriers.

The time to crawl into the fetal position and make deals with the whatever deity would take the pain away would have to wait. With a deep breath he would push pain away and lock onto his target. With a leap and a bound the Dhampir would attack. Attempting to crush the slug with his fist.

Enough was enough. Bloom was not going to stand idle and watch everything happening anymore. She had to change and grow up. The real world was filled with so much despair and that's what Hogwarts was doing, right? Preparing them for the real world and what could happen.

Bloom watched as Howard got kicked in the groin by Erin and winced. She could not even imagine how much it could have hurt him. Bloom watched how he toppled over and made his way to a slug who already looked hurt. She remembered what Hugh said about the slugs. They were in Erin. Bloom, listening to the professors working on healing Erin, decided it was best to help Howard with the slug.

She ran over by his side and the side of the poisoned and bleeding slug and saw how he was smashing it into smithereens. "Mind if I help?" she muttered, looking at the gross creature before her. Bloom did not really want to touch the slug, so she chose to kick the slug while he was punching it. Perhaps more than one person attacking the already-sick slug would help destroy the creature. "Why does. Every. Damn. Dance. Have to. Go wrong!" she screamed in a vent, while kicking the slug harder and harder, also being careful not to get Howard.

Bloom felt that she was not helping enough, however. As she was kicking, she was trying her hardest thinking of a spell that she could use. She wasn't the smartest tool in the shed in thinking of spells. Perhaps a flaw of hers.

A deep soreness was setting in, albeit very slowly. It was effective though. The storm that had overtaken the festival grounds by pure elemental force; did little to ease the growing pain. The rain irritated the opened wound. It poked at the individual teeth marks with it's cold, clammy fingertips. It felt strange. The sensation could be felt beneath the skin, past the numbed surface, into the peeking bits of dermis. It was weird. It was wrong. It was distracting. The spot throbbed rhythmically to a heartbeat of it's own- terribly out of sync with Xailahs own beating mass of muscle. It would make her focus waver, resulting in a much less concentrated attack- but an attack that would still have some success nonetheless.

The beastling girl wondered how much longer this would have to go on for. How much longer could the students keep this up, before they would be forced to submit to fatigue? Erin was no longer hurling squirming, murderer lumps- did that mean the end was near? Xailah hoped so. She really, really hoped so. The efforts made by each student to bring the fight closer to it's end, were admirable; as more an more opted to lend a hand. Tragedy was really the only time complete strangers could be encouraged to work together. A fact that was actually quite depressing. Things weren't quite over yet. They wouldn't be for awhile, if Galton's instructions were not heeded. Xailah took a step back, in hopes of drawing the scuffle closer to the ring of poison the boy had laid down. It was of no surprise that her blade was readied again.

The slug was clearly faster than it looked- no wonder so many people were after it. Her crazy swings hit nothing but the grass beneath her as the slug quickly dodged the incoming attacks from all around. The slug was having too much fun and quickly launched at Lin. Juniper didn't know what those Slug bites did, but she was guessing they didn't exactly give you super powers. "No!" She yelled, moving out of the way but trying to stop the slug at the same time. Luckily, her best friend had quick reflexes as she moved out of the way.
She was about to pounce on the slug once again and possibly try and stab it with her long goblin-like fingers and nails, but she noticed two people at taken the hob of attacking the slug. Well, Juniper wasn't leaving. Not yet, people still needed help. Lot's of help. With horror, she saw someone grab Giddy's head and just crush it.

She imagined Gideon was probably screaming and kicking like a baby. Oh, that boy. Useless, really. Couldn't do a single thing. Juniper hoped his crown got crushed, but the person attacking him seemed to keep going. Juniper ran through the chaos, sliding under people since she was so short. The part-goblin ignored the fear of this giant kid. Unusually short kid vs. unusually giant kid. Clearly, this would not end well. Juniper made her way to Gideon's side and while she knew no healing spells, she knew a few attack spells. In her eyes, the giant kid was evil. Mental.

"Gideon? Gideon are you okay? speak to me, come on..." She saw the blood. "Oh, you're bleeding. Um..." She took the fabric from her hair that she had been using as a ribbon, and held it in her hand. "Can you even wrap a head injury?" She asked herself. Uselessly, she held the fabric to where he was bleeding, trying to stop the flow. "Don't struggle." She ordered of him.

Quickly she looked at the giant with fear. She took out her wand and aimed at him, "INCENDIO!" She had no trust that it would work. None of her spells have been, lately.

Galton was startled by the sight of a frozen slug breaking it’s icy prison so quickly. It was impressive, disturbingly impressive, for something so small and vile to be able to achieve such a feat. If it wasn’t trying to murder them it would be rather inspiring; Galton would have been able to make some metaphor about it and the spirit his duelists needed during practice.

But his spell had hit, and that’s all the fuel he needed to ready his next. If ice was so easily breakable, he’d need another. He raised his wand again and thought.

But his thoughts were drowned out by a strange voice and a brandished blade towards Hugh. Hugh was also not innocent, but he didn’t know his friend to act without reason. Wait… why did so many kids here have knifes? Was Hogwarts turning into some sort of prison where students needed shanks or shivs on themselves at all times. You would think that a wand would be enough protection here. ”Merlin above.” was all Galton could think as he made his move.

Two birds with one stone. Or as Galton liked to think of it whenever he needed to, two pieces of candy in one bite. That was the principle to splitting a spell, that and focus… and a little trust in your abilities. And maybe a bit of luck, that helped too. “What are you fools doing! The slug is still up!” He’d shout to the group around Hugh. But he knows he wouldn’t get an answer. Once students were set on a course, it was hard to change anyone. Let’s see if he could get his spell there in time.

"Petrificus Totalus!" He cast, mind set on the slug and the boy headed towards Hugh. Two candies with one bite. He could only hope his aim would continue to hold true.
