Before arriving at Hogwarts:
Before finding out she was a witch, she lived with her mom and her dad, until he died working in a mine when she was only two years old in a small town in a small house near Moskow, Russia. Since she never really knew her dad and her new stepdad was always very cold and strict towards her, she naturally has a kind of abhorrence against men. Thanks to her stepdad being basically always drunk, her mother had to earn the income for the whole family by woking as a maid for a rich family living in Moskow and when she fell ill, the family fell even more into poverty. When her mom was on the brink of death she organized for six-year old Yelena to be able to move to her aunt in London, England, so that she wouldn't have to live with her stepdad, Ivan. Even tough she originally despised the plan for having to leave her mother alone on her deathbed, her mother persuaded and also kind of forced her, since she was six and couldn't really fend for herself, to move to the UK. When her mother passed away only a few days after she arrived in England, she was informed by her stepdad through a very short and cold call, with the only content being "She's dead, thought you should know.". After that phone call she was really devastated and grieved for a pretty long time. Thanks to her Russian background, she still has a pretty strong Russian accent, even though she learned English really fast thanks to her aunt and uncle and school, which led to her being the target of some bullying throughout the years. Despite that, she was still able to integrate very well and make good friends in and outside of school, for example at her ballet/figure skating practice, which she continued after moving from Russia to England. Even though living at her aunt's sometimes was very difficulty, since her parenting methods were really strict, like for example that she always had to get straight A's or otherwise she would be grounded, she still felt very loved there and also knew that her aunt only used such strict methods, since she wanted the best for her, so that she would have a better live than them, since she and her husband also weren't exactly rich. Overall she had a pretty god childhood in Russia, except for her stepdad, since her mom also loved her very much and also in England since she felt very loved by her aunt and uncle as well. She first came into contact with accidental emotional magic, when, in the sports locker room, she was bullied by some girls for being a straight A students and also for her Russian accent and was really angry at them, but didn't want to do anything, since she didn't want to get in trouble, but then suddenly a backpack flew from behind the girls into their direction and hit one of them right on the back of her head. Even though she was confused, she didn't really think of it as magic since the direction where the backpack came from, was one where also a lot of other students were standing, so she and also the bullies just thought one of them had thrown it. After this, her aunt and uncle were informed by the Ministry of Magic that she was a witch and decided to hear out their advice and send her off to Hogwarts, but not before having her promise that she would stay a straight A student and wouldn't cause any trouble.
At Hogwarts:
On her first day at Hogwarts, Yelena was sorted into Ravenclaw, about which she was pretty excited since she has always loved the color blue.
