Marcel wasn't a bad student. In fact, he was quite the opposite. Marcel was an incredibly eager student, with quite a knack for learning.
His problem was learning things right.
Transfiguration was a rather fickle subject for the young Wheatley boy, even though his brother seemed to excel at them. How he wished Michael were here to help him now. Instead, he bent over his Transfiguration Spellbook, attempting to review the spells by himself.
It wasn't going well. He wasn't able to pronounce the incantation correctly, and he couldn't do the wand movement if he couldn't pronounce the incantation. He didn't want to be the next wizard disaster, after all.
Letting out a dejected sigh, the small boy rested his head on his textbook, his black mop of hair covering his eyes, only a glint of the silver of his glasses visible.
It was hopeless. Transfiguration was just a subject he wouldn't get. He needed to know the information for O.W.L.s, though that wasn't for a long time. But the fear of failure loomed over him, causing him to sit back up, flipping to a new spell to try to pronounce the incantation.
A few more hours of studying couldn't hurt, he thought. Besides, it was Saturday. No classes would be held today anyway, so he had to take advantage of it somehow. He shifted on the uncomfortable chair (it was usually comfortable but now that he had been sitting there for hours he had begun to hurt) and stared at the table for a moment, staring at the grooves of the wood, the chips off the polish, the scratches that young wixen had made on accident. He sighed, brushing his hair out of his face.
He'd need to get it cut soon, he decided, before leaning over the spellbook again.

When teachers pictured a perfect student, it usually went a little bit like this: quiet, attentive, respectful, and neat.

Cross was none of those things. In fact, he resembled every teacher's dreams gone bad. Whether it was his complete inability to shut the hell up and sit down, or the utter lack of self control when it came to keeping his eyes fixed to the front of the classroom, for some reason, most teachers had taken a disliking to him.

Which is perhaps why it was a little mind blowing to see the lanky, stringbean of a boy slipping into the library. He was shuffling in slowly, looking over his shoulder from time to time, his arms crossed over his stomach, figure enveloped by a coat larger than life.

Somewhere from outside the library, angry chattering seemed to follow him. The closer it got, the faster he started walking, until he broke out into a near spring, ducking behind a pile of books. And nearly fell over a nerdy looking kid. "Shhh" he hissed, clamping his hand over the other boy's mouth, eyes wide as he barely held back his giggles. From somewhere behind the stack of books, the angry voices continued on. It was only when footsteps faded out that Cross released the boy, slumping down beside the desk. From under his coat, several sweet treats floated out, hovering above the floor. "Sorry about that..." he breathed out, straightening his clothes.

Marcel was almost completely absorbed in the book, which meant he was caught surprised by someone toppling into him. As he looked up to tell the boy to watch where he was going, he was caught further in surprise by the hand over his mouth. He tried to push the boy's hand off when he heard angry voices from somewhere beyond the shelves of books, and he froze.
Marcel didn't particularly like conflict. Sure, he would stand up for what was right, but he didn't like being thrust into conflict. Especially when it was conflict with someone he didn't know.
Thankfully, though, the voices retreated, and the hand was removed from the boy's mouth. He sighed, glaring at the boy who uttered out an apology.
"I sure hope you're bloody sorry!" He was less angry than he was flustered and confused. Who was this guy? Why were people chasing him? And- his eyes wandered to the sweets that floated out of the stranger's coat, and his eyebrows raised in surprise. He hadn't seen floating sweets before- at least he didn't think so- and he pushed his glasses up, finally standing from his chair. "...Who are you? And- why do you have these? Who was chasing you? Where-" The questions began to tumble out, one after the other, and he tried his best to stop them.

"Sorry, sorry" Cross smirked, plucking one of the floating candies out of the air and offering it to him. "I snuck to Hogsmead, and one of the prefects saw me." Which explained the less-than-pleased noise still coming from a corner of the library.

Shaking the dust out of his clothes, Cross stole a peak at the books which he'd toppled in his rush to hide. They were transfiguration manuals, and had fallen open to one of the nastiest lessons Cross had seen thus far. "Oh god" he groaned, picking one of Marcel's books up and making a face at it. "Is this the homework for Mr. Wade?"

Mr. Wade wasn't a terrible teacher. He just used a lot of words, most of which Cross didn't know the meaning off, let alone how to spell. "He's gonna fail me" the boy lamented, giving the book back. "And then my momma's gonna whoop my ass, just you wait and see." Running a hand through his hair, Cross pulled out a twig and a couple of leaves which had somehow gotten lost in the wild curly mane. "Cross. Nice to meet you......" he squinted. He knew the boy from running into him a few times in the past two years, but they'd never interacted aside from a few polite smiles. "....I wanna say...Mark?"

"You snuck into Hogsmeade?" The smaller boy repeated this incredulously, his eyes growing wide. "I suppose that explains the angry voices, but that's... why would you sneak in? We'll be able to go..." His eyebrows furrowed, trying to remember what his brother told him. "Next year?"
His eyes followed the taller boy as he examined the manuals. "Review, mostly. And... Attempts to learn the lessons before we learn them." He gave a nervous chuckle. "It's... Not going well. If you can imagine." He cocked his head at Cross's comment, then grimaced as he used the wrong name. He was... incredibly particular about his name, and who got to use nicknames. "Marcel," he said stiffly, pushing up his glasses before sticking out his hand for Cross to shake. "It is nice to properly meet you, Cross. If you'd like, I can try my best to tutor you on some of the simpler Transfiguration spells. I've sort of gotten a few of them down, at least I'd like to think so- though I suppose since you were in Hogsmeade you aren't one of the studying sorts... Though I would like to know how you got into Hogsmeade in the first place? If memory serves, you need a permission form to do so?"

"Life's too short" Cross shrugged, plucking a candy out of the air and popping it in his mouth. It was a Sherbet lemon, one of his favorites. Living amongst muggles meant he got the best of both worlds. And these candies were definitely 'the best'. Cross sighed happily, melting to the floor, expensive clothes gathering up all the dust underneath Mark's table. "Right, that's long for Mark. And a lot harder to spell." He was fairly certain if people knew his name was 'DaEmOn', he wouldn't hear the end of it. It was what he got for having a dad obsessed with muggles.

"Ah so you're an egghead then" he mused. "Don't know what else I expected sneaking into the library." Mark over there was the kid his parents had always wished for, and never had. Smart as heck, probably. Handsome, if Cross could say so himself. Quiet, a bit shy. Mark was more like his dad than he was. "You're gonna do cool things, I can see it" he said, gesturing to Mark with a long, sweeping gesture. "Gonna end up doing something grand. You could be the next Dumbledore. Only the next Dumbledore would study ahead. You nerd."

A shadow passed over Cross' face at the offer of tutoring. It wasn't that he was stupid, but he liked to pretend he was. There was a lot less pressure when people had low expectations of you. "No thanks. Doesn't matter whether I fail or not." The massive scar on his face was as much proof. No one would hire a werewolf, no matter how good he did in school. "Although...are all nerds this cute, or is it just you? Because it might be worth sitting through it anyway."

"It is not long for anything. It's just Marcel. I would appreciate it if you would use my proper name, Cross. And I am not an egghead. I'm smart, yes, and I appreciate the acquiring of knowledge, but I do have hobbies apart from studying. I like to read fantasy stories if you would believe it, and I am fascinated with puzzles."
An embarrassed blush spread across his face. "Come now, I could never be the next Dumbledore. I'm not that eccentric, for one. For two, I'm the youngest brother, and I like it that way. Anyways, it does matter whether or not you fail, but I won't push the matter. I didn't mean to imply you were stupid. If you can sneak into Hogsmeade and get away with it, it means you're incredibly clever."
He sighed, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck. Flirting was... odd for him. Of course, he was only twelve, but it was supposed to make sense at some point, right? However, even when reading books, Marcel found most romance hollow. Regardless, he had to respond with something, so he pushed up his glasses. "Thank you for the compliment, I suppose... Though I wouldn't label myself as 'cute.'"
