Mariah stepped out of the charms classroom as soon as it was dismissed, lugging her heavy bag behind her. She was grateful this was the last class before the weekend. Mariah didn't think she could handle another one without a break. It seemed every single one of her classes gave her homework over the weekend. Was it a personally vendetta the professors had against the students? Or maybe just the idea of fun and relaxation send them in a rage. What caused it didn't really matter. Mariah wished for a way to procrastinate until the very last minute.
Her father would be furious, believing whole heartedly in the importance of a young Witch's education, but her mother would tell her the homework would be there tomorrow. Her mother had a rather eccentric, free-loving take on life and that came out often in the way she raised her children. All of them were adventurous and stubborn. Though Mariah shared her mother's joy in new and exciting things, she took a lot after her dad with her sky rocketing temper and pride. The difference was her father had years of practice in reigning it in, where as she was only 11.

As usual, Cel lagged behind, her eyes still fixated on a chapter in the textbook that she probably wasn't supposed to read yet, as the stampede of students made a beeline for the door as soon as they were dismissed. Just finish the sentence... no, the page... the chapter!...You're going to try to finish the whole book next, just put it down now. Sighing to herself, the girl looked around, eyes still glued to the text, and felt around the table for her bookmark. When she felt nothing and looked over, Cel realized it must have fallen off the table. Not bothered enough to go find it, she stuck her dull wooden knife in between the pages in its stead-- it was a good thing she had brought two today-- and tucked the book into her loaded bag.
She stepped out into the hallway quickly, hoping nobody would comment on the wooden hilt poking out of the side of her bag. Upon her exit, she spotted a dark-haired girl walking in the same direction as herself. Hey... wasn't that Mariah, the girl she had met in the Leaky Cauldron before Hogwarts had started? Cel quickened her pace slightly to catch up.
"Hi," she greeted with a smile. "Mariah, right? Remember me, Cel? From the Leaky Cauldron."

Mariah turned toward the girl's familiar voice and grinned.
"Yeah," she replied. "I remember- the singer." She patted her bag where her sketch book was nestled inside. She had come back to the drawing at home later that day and had colored it before she forgot everything. Mariah had thoroughly enjoyed their conversation and had idly hoped she would bump into the girl at school. It would have done Mariah good to see a familiar face after the disaster with the sorting hat. Not that Mariah had issues with Hufflepuff now. Despite the separation between houses, Mariah was starting to gather that friends tended to range all over Hogwarts.
Granted, she didn't see her brothers as often as she liked, but the separation allowed her to grow without the constant looming of their shadows. She had admitted to herself that, had they been in the same house, their constant presence would have stifles her considerably.
"How have you been?" Mariah asked, pulling on the neckline of her uniform. It aggravates her immensely that the school uniform seemed to be completely outdated. Who wore ties and vests anymore anyway? The whole ordeal cried for a makeover and she wished there was a way to bring it up to the staff. Mariah noted, however, that Hogwarts was a school of tradition. That meant traditional, constricting, and ugly uniforms.

Cel smiled at the epithet that Mariah had given her. Honestly, singing wasn't her main... occupation, if she could call it that. It was more of a side thing, and even if she was good-- and felt annoyed with herself for believing that sometimes, for some reason-- there was just so much other stuff to do that she probably wouldn't pursue it... or any one thing, anyway.
"Mm, I guess I've been pretty great," she grinned. Well, aside from a dislocated shoulder, duel atop dinner, and... uh, that wasn't important. "I mean, I've been banged up a bit, but every first year has to get used to the school environment, right?" The Ravenclaw was pretty sure falling out of the West Tower wasn't part of that. Eh, whatever. It'd be her school environment, not other peoples'.
"How about you?" Cel inquired. "Did shopping go well with your mother?" Her eyes shifted towards her friend's yellow striped tie. "Ooh, you're a Hufflepuff! I got Ravenclaw." Apparently it was the house that Parker had expected her to be in, but again, he had neglected to tell her. He had been in Ravenclaw himself, allegedly.
"So, what did you buy in Diagon Alley?" she wondered. "I wasn't there to buy anything other than school supplies, but it seemed like you shopped for other stuff, too," she said with a chuckle.

"Shopping was great," Mariah enthused, flashing a grin. "I got a brand new wardrobe for the school year. Too bad we have to wear the uniforms." Mariah grimaced, preferring the new class of her new clothes versus this ancient outfit. She wondered why her mom had bothered with the new clothes if this was what she was trapped in for most days if the year. Mariah tried to look at it in a positive light but the drab gray of the shirt and skirt ensemble was really killing her mood she was trying to maintain in order to stay sane.
"Yeah... Hufflepuff," Mariah muttered. She had gotten used to the idea of being like her Aunt, the odd one out, but some days were harder to accept than others. On particularly bad days, it was when she missed home and knew her brothers were six floors up behind a password protected painting and would never be able to just walk in and say hi. She caught glimpses of them in the Great Hall, surrounded by their friends and ever happy. They made a point to call her over and strike conversation but Mariah just knew it had to be embarrassing for them to have a sister who wasn't up to Gryffindor scratch.

Cel noticed her friend's absence of enthusiasm in being sorted into the affable House. She didn't comment but took note of it-- she knew that many had trouble getting their expectancies crushed. Once Mariah had told her that she hoped for Gryffindor, and to be sorted into Hufflepuff instead must have been a bit daunting.
"Yeah, I guess the uniforms are a little... orthodox," she chuckled. "Whatever luddite insists on us wearing them." Truthfully, she didn't care all that much about her uniform. At least it got rid of the hassle of this-doesn't-go-with-this morning halfhearted choices. But... oh, Mariah seemed like the right person to ask for her dilemma.
"Hey, have you seen the posters about the BlossomFest Ball?" Cel grinned. She was lucky to have Mariah as a friend-- she would never be able to solve this problem on her own. "There's a dance class happening soon-- taught by Professor Barrows and Professor Blackburn, I think it said-- and... uh," she sighed, "I don't know what exactly to wear. To the real ball, either." Honestly, ever since she'd fallen into the routine of uniforms and robes every day, she didn't pay any attention to her physical appearance. Several persnickety female professors at Oxford had told her to "make the most of your fortunate looks," but she'd rarely yielded to their fussing and went about the day in whatever clothing was the most comfortable. Hogwarts uniforms were comfortable enough. But the Ball... that was going to be formal, and she ought to learn to dance in at least semi-formal clothing.

Mariah gave her friend a blinding smile. She really couldn't help herself. This was her thing, one of the few things she had a natural talent for. If there were any sort of good money in it, she would open a "Dress you" shop and give people advice on what to wear. She could probably design her own line of witch and wizard wear, but she was also pretty sure there was no money in that either.
"I happen to be rather gifted at such things," Mariah said, her steps beginning to bounce a little with excitement. "I have a whole trunk full of dresses in my dorm, just in case." She had heard about the dances from her brothers and had wanted to come completely prepared. She wasn't sure how many dances there was on a year at Hogwarts and she wouldn't be caught dead wearing the same dress twice.
"I could help you if you want," she said. "I have options for hair and my Nan taught me this really neat trick to curl hair with your wand. The trick is the heat. You just mutter a little spell to heat your wand enough to curl your hair, spritz a little hair potion on it, and voila! Your hair is curled without any stiffness that comes with that weird muggle potion that makes your hair stay."

The girl stared at her Hufflepuff friend as if she were a ticking bomb-- a ticking bomb of excitement, of course. Closer to a hand grenade, to be honest, but not any less potent.
Not important.
"You have a trunkful of dresses?" Cel questioned, her jaw just about hanging open. She couldn't resist the giggle that slipped out of her mouth incredulously. "Why would you need so many?" Cel didn't have one formal dress in her trunk, let alone a whole trunk of them. Usually she just owled Parker if she needed something. Somehow he would always get it to her... extraordinarily quickly.
"I don't think I'd look good with curled hair," the young Ravenclaw girl grinned, fingering her wavy teal ends. "But Mariah-- it's just a dance lesson, you don't have to waste your effort on me! You're going too, aren't you?" she added, a little worried. Cel definitely didn't want to be alone in the midst of so many unrecognizable faces at the Ball. Well. She was taking dance lessons, but she probably wouldn't dance... more likely she would hang back and chat with people, or just watch everyone else. She was just taking the lessons as a... precaution.
Nevertheless, Cel could admit to herself that she wanted to look presentable. Or, well, at least not embarrass herself. And she was grateful for her friend's help if she could have it... Mariah didn't seem to mind one bit-- quite the opposite, to be honest, with the spring in her step and the growing smile on her face.
"Oh, all right-- you can decide my outfit, if you want to, which you sure look like you do," she laughed. "You really do love this fashion stuff, don't you?"

Mariah ducked her head, slightly embarrassed. "I heard avout the dances," she explained. "And I had no idea what I would want to wear at the time. It's all on the theme, you know! You want to look like you belong there. You can't show up to a black tie event in neon orange! It's... well, just classless. Now a tropical themed dance, neon is your go to! Not that one would go with the orange perse..." she trailed off with a delicate shrug and when Cel said she could dress her, Mariah danced a little jig. She couldn't help herself. It was like having a life sized doll. She found the whole ordeal thoroughly entertaining.
"I have just the dress! Your hair color will clash with a lot of different things so we've already narrowed it down a great deal with that alone. But one takes in skin tone, height, and body build when deciding a dress. The fact that you're slim in itself opens a world of possibilities." As she spoke, she began pulling the girl toward the first floor where the Hufflepuff commons resided. "I hate that you can't come in with me, but I can just drag a few pieces out and we can head to the girl's lavatory."
