All Aboard The Freak Train!
He wasn't going to go. He did not belong here.
When his mother first brought up the idea of taking him to a magic school, Simon thought she was crazy. They had known about his father being a wizard, but deep down they hoped none of the magic actually rubbed off on him.
Then, the rug thing happened, which Simon tried to pass off as being "a trick of the eyes." They could have gotten recent color blindness... or it was a new rug... or maybe it had always been that way. He did not know. One thing he did know- the last thing Simon wanted was to be some kind of magical freak of nature.
Then the owl. That was the worst part. Simon had woken up one day to an annoying pecking sound, like someone was tapping their acrylic nails against the window. When they had looked outside, they saw a most peculiar sight- an owl, holding a letter, embedded with some weird looking logo. Simon had tried to shoo them away promptly after opening the window, but it just caused the owls to perceive him as an enemy and nearly peck his eyes out.
The letter, as it turned out, was an invitation to the freak school Simon already forgot the name of. And now it led to this- Simon begging his mother not to bring him and his mom not caring.
Simon stubbornly dragged his feet in protest while they approached the train. His mother held up their arms like he was taking his first steps once again. Despite her efforts, Simon persisted with the complaints.
"Mother! Can we just go home? I'm not a freak! I'm not!" he yelled, garnering the attention of the passerby around him. "I don't want to go! For one, trains are completely and utterly filthy. You know how they are!"
"Simon, you quit acting up and get yourself together," his mother hissed, letting go of his left arm but keeping a firm grip on the right. She took a deep breath and kneeled down to his level, looking up at his face. "This will be good for you, you'll see. It was what your father would've wanted."
Simon's eyes dropped down to his shoes at the mention of his father. He knew his mother was right- it was what his dad would've wanted. However, Simon thought bitterly, the magic was what got them into this mess. If he had not known about magic, his father would still be here... alive today.
Simon sighed, then whispered, "I just don't wanna go,"
His mother placed his hands on his shoulders. "I know it's hard, honey." she said softly. She looked off to the side for a moment, then she got an idea. "Hey, how about this- you go to the school for a month, and any time during that month, if you decide to quit, just shoot me a phone call- or, erm, owl- and tell me you want to leave, Okay?"
Simon thought about it. It did sound like a good deal, and their mom never went back on her word.
But he really did not want to be here. He had friends at home- he couldn't just abandon them. They really did mean a lot to him. Even if he didn't act like it.
"So?" his mother said expectantly.
Simon sighed. "I don't know, Mother. It's just, i have friends at the moment."
"You'll make new friends!" his mom insisted hopefully. "You might even meet a nice girl! Or boy!"
Simon tapped his chin then decided that his mother was right- he was fairly likable and probably could make some new friends. Even if they were freaks.
"Hmm, sounds like a deal. But!" he added, "if I do decide to leave, do not tell my friends about this. Okay?"
His mother laughed a little. "Okay, Mister Popular." She kissed him on the cheek, then handed him his trunk. "Be safe, okay? I packed some snacks, hand sanitizer and tissues for you!"
"Alright, Mum," Simon said, handing his trunk to a man helping other wizards and witches. "I love you too."
He boarded the train, and looked around. There were so many others there. He looked around, observing the people there.
At first glance, they didn't look too bad. Some of them were oddly dressed and had horrid fashion sense, but that was something Simon could not cure. But some of them were downright gross. They saw a witch holding a jar of what looked like... eyes? Absolutely disgusting. He was lumped in with these people?
Finally, Simon found an empty seat, sat down, and heard a muffled croak. He jolted up to see a toad hop off the seat of where he was sitting. They laid their cloak where they planned to sit and plopped down.
"All aboard the freak train," he mumbled to himself as the train started to move. He had a feeling it was going to be a long year.
