A Great Lake Surprise
Monday, December 13, 2021.
After classes.

The Fall ball didn't go as planned. Simon was starting to see a pattern there. It seemed all the school dances and functions had mosps or hags or betwitched food or drinks. Maybe he should have expected it. His had gone horribly wrong even before the strong winds of the Scottish Highlands sent the tent at the Quidditch Pitch toppling down onto staff and students.
His had gone wrong at one point when he began the dance with his dear friend Emily and the two spent some time together until his girlfriend Haley Rose arrived and then things just seemed to get awkward.
He felt he sort of owed it to Emily to try and make up for their lack of a true dance that he promised her. She had taken lessons from him in order to learn and then didn't get a true dance to dance at. It was his hopes to change that. Upon reading her letter and discovering she would be a little late, Simon darted off to his dormitory the moment class ended, changing into something relatively warm, grabbed some things, and then dashed off to the Great Lake where he said he'd meet her.
Once at the Great Lake, he quickly took out a string and a needle. He used it to thread some leaves on the string then placed them from one tree to another, sort of creating a garland of sorts. Decorations. He then laid out an ivory color blanket that he had and placed on it a couple shortbread cookies, some lemon drops, and some water - attempting to recreate the snack/beverage table best he could. It wasn't much at all but it was the best he could do and he could tell that an effort had been made. Now all he needed was his dancing partner.

A Great Lake Surprise
Once Emily finished her Transfiguration class, she ran out of the classroom straight to the Great Lake, she had taken her winter jacket with her this morning so she shouldn't have to go back and come even later than she knew she'd already been. She ran down the stairs from the fifth floor all the way down onto the grounds. She had never been a sportive person but managed to get down easily.
Once she ran her way all the way to the great lake, she saw Simon waiting for her, as she saw him, she stopped running and switched over to walking. She gave a small wave and smiled. "Hey! How have you been?" She asked him while sitting down next to him. She had no idea how to act around him. She had found out she might have liked him and managed to place the feeling away, but she had no idea how it would turn out once they talked again.
And as said, she had no interest in starting anything with Simon, he had a wonderful girlfriend, and she did not want to mess that up. She still felt a bit guilty over leaving him at the fall ball, she never meant to, but she was so overwhelmed that there was no choice other than to leave. "
I want to apologize again for leaving at the fall ball, I never meant to leave you there alone with Haylee, I just had to go. I hope you don't mind!" She said and gave another small smile, trying to sound nice.

Trying to make it up to @Emily R. Brewer
"You needn't apologize for anything," Simon said gently, wishing she wouldn't. Now, while he was unaware of any feelings perhaps his friend had for him, he knew enough to know that he had taught Emily how to dance, he had promised her a dance, and then together they spent a good deal of time at the Ball just to up and leave her when his date showed up. That was pretty low of him. It would probably make anyone feel terrible. He should have balanced the two, included her more.
"I'm rather glad you left in some ways. With the tent falling the way it did..." he paused, hating to think of what could have happened to her. He was grateful that Haley hadn't gotten hurt and while his injuries at the time were rather significant, with the help of medical magic he was doing just fine now.
"Anyway, I wanted to welcome you to the Nearly Winter Ball, hosted by Simon Kincaid," he said as he motioned his decorations and snacks and refreshments. Also near one of the trees was the large gramophone that he had retrieved from the Rehearsal Room. There were only so many records on it which to play, some she had already heard through their dance lessons, but that didn't matter. "Thought maybe we could give it a second go-around? No...Hufflepuffs being egotistical and no falling tents. Come, let me escort you to the dance floor, if I may."
Simon held out his hand for her to take. The 'dance floor' so to speak, would be just over closer to the trees and he'd have to take a quick moment to crank the gramophone to get the music to play, but once that was done, the two could begin their dance.

Emily was flattered by what Simon had done. She got that amazing, safe and warm feeling again, the feeling she had been trying to avoid. The feeling had to stop. Simon was with Haylee, and nothing could be done to that. And Emily shouldn't be feeling this in the first place! She was a first year, and wasn't supposed to be interested in anyone.
She looked down, trying to find a good excuse to avoid the offer. "Uhm well... I'd love to dance, but i can't.... i haven't been feeling so well, nothing bad not at all just headaches and not into dancing." She said. She felt bad for lying to Simon, but there really was no other way than avoid the closeness. She had to take her distance, and that is what she would do.
"Altho i am not saying no to those snacks!" She said and grabbed a drink she had still in her back saved. She handed Simon a few chocolate frogs which she had been saving for special occasions and started enjoying her snacks. "How have you been? How are you and Haylee doing btw? Did you too get to make things up then?" She asked, she knew they definitely had made things up like that was obvious...but she wanted to make sure by asking, who knows what happened during the time she had no contact with Simon.

Feeling out of touch with @Emily R. Brewer
Simon watched as Emily looked down and then told him how she hadn't been feeling well, declining his offer to dance. This was his Nearly Winter Ball, to make up for the Fall Ball. It was his hopes that maybe he could mend how he had practically up and ignored her but it didn't seem that she was ready to make amends and honestly, he probably deserved it. He had ruined a good friendship by abandoning her the way he had, even if it wasn't entirely intentional - even if it wasn't entirely what happened.
Simon sat down with her, thanking her for the chocolate frog and opened it carefully, sliding out the card without causing the frog inside to be distracted. They had one good jump in them, enchanted to somehow do so. "I've been...alright," he said, somewhat telling the truth and somewhat not being truthful. This whole discovery in finding his father's name and even going as far as to write him a letter had been difficult for him and he had no one he felt he could burden with it. Emily had become distant, Clair had mischief and detentions to worry about, and Haley was off doing her thing.
"I guess we sort of made up," but he let that kind of go too. It wasn't the same as it once had been where he felt that Haley trusted him to tell him everything and now she had big things going on that his little trivial life didn't seem worth telling her so there was a stillness there.
"But how've you been?" and that he did truly want to know. She had become more of a stranger now over the past couple months and he didn't like that at all. He missed his friend Emily.

A Great Lake Surprise
Emily and Simon might be on an itchy road right now, but she knew when or he wasn't being entirely sure, or he wasn't telling what he wanted to tell her. She felt bad for dropping his entire idea, he had worked so so much on it, and she really really appreciated it. She just didn't want to fall into feelings all over again or anything like that. She was protecting herself, not really against Simon, but against the pain. She usually took distance from people right before, when she felt too close, she took her distance, but she didn't, not with Simon. But now it was time.
"I am doing great at this moment! I worked a lot on myself, chilling with friends, talking to my parents, focussing on classes. But Simon, are you sure you are doing good, you sound like you could do much better." She asked them, hoping he would open up to him. "Also, I am so sorry for breaking your idea down, i really wish i didn't have to, but in some way, I just have to, I can't have a dance with you, not now, maybe later, when I'm feeling differently, I don't want to ruin our friendship, really no, i have loved..." and she fell silent, she has just said she had loved. As she was panicking in her head, she was trying to restore the sentence. "I mean, our friendship is unique and I love that about it, it's amazing! And I don't want to throw that away!" She said and smiled.
"What i mean is, please talk to me, about anything, i'm here for you! I wish that i could talk to you about what sbeen on my mind, but that iss just not an option at this moment, but i want to be there for you! Help you, support you! I am here for you no matter what!" She said, hoping he would open up. She felt bad for not being able to tell him, but she didn't want to make him feel worse than she things he already does, and doesn't want to make anything more complicated than it already is.

Talking with @Emily R. Brewer
Worked on herself, chilled with friends, focused on classes...and yet he was left behind. Simon didn't like the fact that he felt he had been neglected slightly, but he did feel that way. He felt that way lately with others as well. Instead of being the close friend, he was the forgotten friend. The sometimes friend.
"Really, I'm alright," and that was the truth, but Simon wasn't one to normally say he was 'alright' and instead, if he was doing well, he would say he was doing well or that he was good or great. Fantastic. Something, but definitely something other than 'alright.' "I've got my health and my grades aren't the worst and I'm soon getting to see muggle friends back in London and visit with Aunt Maggie," he smiled, trying to focus on the good.
"Nothing really to talk about." At least, not really. He'd have to backtrack so much and he felt at some point he would lose her interest. Matters like feeling distant from a girlfriend were not matters for a sometimes friend. Matters like learning about your father's name and writing him weren't matters for a sometimes friend. He didn't need to put that weight on Emily.
"But thanks," he added, hoping to keep some niceties going. Simon opened up one of the waters and took a drink, declining any of the food. His taste buds never agreed with most things and food didn't really curb his appetite anyway. It was like his dhampir self telling him that this 'normal norishment' of food wasn't for him.
Simon didn't really know what to talk about with Emily. A lot of time had passed. He could have asked her about her classes but she was a Ravenclaw and he was pretty sure she was doing well in them, especially since that was part of what she had been focusing on. "What are your plans for the holiday?"

A Great Lake Surprise
Emily wasn't entirely sure if he was telling the truth, but at that point, she felt like that didn't really matter, after all, she understood if she had lost his trust. She had been there for him, always and then suddenly, she just never talked to him again. Which she did kinda feel bad about.
" Thank you for all you've done here! It's gorgeous!" She said and smiled. "Uhm well, if never really celebrated Xmas before so this will be my first time! And my birthday is the 24th of December so that's really exciting!" She said happily, while being extremely excited for this holiday season
"What about you, do you have anything planned?" She asked him while looking around at all the decorations, taking another bean. As she looked around she felt even more guilty for rejecting that dance. She felt like she was losing a friendship that was so great, just because she couldn't keep her emotions at last. "You know what? Are you still open for that dance, or do you want me to find a toat to learn me some more moves?" She said and smiled while getting up and stretching out her hand.

A Great Lake Surprise
Lots of talk with @Emily R. Brewer
That was cool that her Birthday would fall over the Winter Break and he wished he had known that and planned a present for her. There was so much about Emily he sadly didn't know. One day they reconnected at Hogwarts and began to build a strong connection and the next she was gone. Honestly, it was pretty much what Haley Rose had done over the Summer and Simon didn't know what he did to cause others to do that. How many more would up and do it? Would Haley and Emily do it again? It was painful but still he wanted to be there for those he cared about. If they did it a hundred times, he'd still be there when they came back.
"Well, happy early Birthday," he smiled to her. "As for me, Winter Break will mostly be about reconnecting. Getting together with some of my friends back in London, having good conversations with Aunt Maggie. Getting back to church. Listening to music. Merlin..." he shook his head. "I'll be listening to Apple Music nearly every moment until it's time to come back." Music was something he terribly missed while being at Hogwarts. While he could still partake in some of the things, there was so much else he missed out on with the no technology thing.
He also had plans on writing his father but didn't feel the need to go into all that. He'd have to talk about the Summer and the man that visited and the box that was left behind. No, that was a long dark struggle that he had already gone through and he didn't want to backtrack through it all. Better left unsaid.
Emily mentioned the dance, which was the original reason that Simon had her meet him there. It was why he had provided such decorations and the snacks - an attempt to recreate the Fall Ball that had gone so wrong for the two. He wondered if she was just doing it out of felt obligation and didn't want that. "If you're not feeling well, we don't have to," he said to her, but slowly stood up. She had used that for an excuse and he knew it, but truly, he wasn't wanting her to do something she didn't want to do. He did still want to dance though.

Emily smiled. "I know silly! I wouldn't do anything I don't want to, I'm feeling better, don't you worry about me okay! I'm doing perfectly fine! Look" She said and she jumped around, turning around and dancing all on her own, enjoying the soft snow that was falling down. It must have been one of the first times snowing and she absolutely loved it. The wind made her feel like she was flying. It made her feel peaceful and free. Like a birth. A bird that was free to go wherever it wanted to, a birth not caring about the world, just being free and flying. That's what she wanted to be. Free.
She grabbed his hand and started dancing as mad as she could, jumping up and down, floading over the grounds together. "Now don't be shy just dance, we got all evening!" She said and laughed. Eventually, she slipped down onto the grass over some snow, and could not resist stopping her laugher. "D-did HAHAHAA, Did you see that? WAHAHAHAAHA I just- HAHAHA, I fell HAHAHHAHA" She tried to say. With all the laughing it wasn't quite easy but she wasn't able to stop as well.
