6'3" (190.5 cm)Standing with his typical perfect posture, Alois is a very tall, slim man, though he rather lacks what imposing presence one may gain with his stature. His hair is a dull red, having lost most of its vibrancy with age and appears a plain shade of blonde until the reddish tint is brought out by natural light. He is often seen sporting large round glasses over his blue eyes, but it's made clear that these are not a tool for sight, as he's known to casually remove them should he feel they are "in the way". While Alois is fluent in both English and Quebec French, he speaks with an accent which reflects the latter as his first language.
PERSONALITYA difficulty grasping consequences does wonders to build a well-rounded man. Having spent much of his youth and early adulthood reaping the benefits of being a trust fund child, Alois developed a distance from reality, a class gap between himself and those who needed to adapt to the appropriate responsibility. This is a gap that even after his years of working to straighten himself up, still makes its existence known when the conversations takes a turn for realism. This occasionally can lead to him coming off as blissfully ignorant, or in different words, greatly privileged.
The negative influence his early years still have over him is a great deal of the reason for his overly formal way of carrying himself. While slow to anger, Alois is prone to speak in concise, short phrases as though tangents pose a viable threat to his persona, and can often be perceived as cold. This cadence can lend to an aura of being unapproachable, though this leans toward a much more awkward tone than one of intimidation. He tends to be dismissive and treading the defined line of politeness toward colleagues with a blunt way of addressing others, though would rarely breach the boundary toward unprofessional behavior, as that simply goes against the invisible stiff strings he is dragged along by.
Of course, he is his best self when with his students and creatures: a harmonious blend of the once lighthearted Alois and the more responsible adult that he has nurtured through the years since returning home. This is also when his veils are cast aside, and the scholar aspect that has been a long suppressed part of him is awoken. Magical creatures, while what initially grounded him from his string of ill behavior, are also what bring him the most genuine calm, what chips away at the over-professional mien. It's made clear to those around him that his life revolves around his career and that it was a field in which he excelled long before he was willing to admit and devote to it.
BACKSTORYAlois Irvin Proulx was born to the esteemed Alistair and Cordelia Proulx in Montréal. From this very moment, he was a poisonous fruit to his family tree, a limp branch the couple never quite had the heart to cut away. It was remarkable that the first inkling his mind gained of free-will was immediately used to turn against not only the expectations of his prestigious parents, but of society in general.
To further elaborate on this behavior would bring us to his time at Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardy where to many people's surprise, Alois was sorted into Horned Serpent. He had a knack for finding himself in the midst of fights, in scandals involving cheating (needlessly—he had a remarkable grasp on many of his subjects), and for generally wreaking havoc that promoted an almost weekly Howler from his distressed mother.
While at Ilvermorny, Alois did develop a fatherly bond with his professor for Care of Magical Creatures, and although he'd like to say this bond was enough to lead him on the proper path, it didn't. What it did solidify, however, was a singular class in which there was never an issue, not with his behavior or work ethic. His proficiency would be swept under the rug by himself for many years to come, although the outstanding star in a charcoal night was filed away for later by his parents. This was the early development of a serene sort of passion, one that Alois had not yet come to understand, as at this point he was still an avid believer that your heart had to race for you to be having any fun.
Because his parents were able to cleanse him of major consequences, his entry into adulthood was as much fueled by spite and carelessness as the one into the realm of adolescence. On a whim, he'd decided to free himself completely of their influence by hiding away in British Columbia. Obviously this was among his worse decisions, but it was also a key turning-point in his development. Without their hands to hold his collar or rinse his record, Alois found himself in purgatory. Living without money and assets, there was little more for him to depend on than the faultless wind of his caprices.
With nothing to chain him, faithless in mortality, Alois fell in love with someone who reflected all those things he chased in his travels. Those he knew he wanted, and many he'd buried for fear of settling. A quick-witted Muggle girl with an insatiable craving for adventure, for more than what the world confined them to, whether she had to find it or make it up herself. In this respect, Lelianna Decipio was everything Alois knew he was searching for on the western coast. Yet, somehow, she was more; the unconscious part of himself which became so hopelessly devoted to her, was just as appealed by how in touch she was with life, with the future and the haven she could make of reality.
The problem lay in this attraction existing only in his unconscious mind, the deepest desires that he suppressed, terrified of losing the freedom he'd fought for. She was grounded. Alois knew, in the long run, Lelianna was a family-oriented woman, someone who strived for more. Tethered to the little things in life, mixing a feeling of home into a recipe, working as a young nurse to support herself. As much as he wished he could win against himself and enjoy this, his pride became too much. To find adventure in only one person seemed, at the time, to be foolish. So he cut off his wants, his wishes, his newly found responsibilities, in favor of the comfort of the devil-may-care person he'd been for his entire life.
It was less than a year before he did what he did best: fled.
It was 2007, having returned to Quebec with an adjusted outlook, Alois rediscovered the passion he had so readily dismissed as a student. It was a search for what would finally anchor him to the ground, and his parents helped to push him into a career as a magizoologist. Caring for and studying these magical creatures finally put upon him the sense of responsibility he had so drastically lacked most of his life, a will to prioritize their health and quality of life just as he had his own. Over a decade later and having mastered his craft and new life, Alois caught wind of a position that involved bestowing upon others what had done so much to change his own life, and the transition was an inevitability. Perhaps, somewhere within him, he believed he could do for someone else what his own professor had done for him, although, perhaps spare them the heartache down the road.
