2021, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw: Match 5

Robert couldn't help but laugh as he danced with Nicky, separated only by length of the dueling piste. However, the poor twelve year old also began to blush furiously at the mention of romance, especially in the context of a ball. However learned he might be in the classroom, the young boy was still innocently uncomfortable about matters of the heart. In an attempt to cover this up, he put an impish grin on his face to match his partner's. "To be fair, even when charmed to dance together, you're still standing twenty feet away from me. What does that say about my chances of success?"

Round Eleven

Too soon, the pair of duelists' romantic dancing stopped, and with it, the duel's appeal. However, Dmitri did not have to be worried because immediately after their dance steps came to a close, the Gryffindors were back to business as usual.

Elsa and Sylvie both cast formidable Flipendos at Robert. One hit, which seemed to be Sylvie's. It was strong enough to make the Ravenclaw wobble where he stood, but not quite as strong as to knock him down.

It would have been a perfect opportunity for the Gryffindor girl to make a crack at "sweeping the boy off his feet" after their little dancing stint. But alas, it was not to be.

Robert, to his credit, did try very hard to dodge, bobbing and weaving from his side of the arena. But not only did he fail to avoid the attacks on him, his funky little sidestep (probably leftover... spasms from the Dancing Feet Spell with the way it looked) brought him directly under the path of a thunderbolt.

Dmitri had to wince. That must have hurt.

Already, the Ravenclaw was looking a little worse for wear.

The show must go on, though, and the Slytherin captain was ready for it to be over.

If Nicky thought of everything that was happening in the romantic context, she would probably blush just as much as Robert, or even more. After all, she was awfully awkward when it came to all things romantic - the thought of romance only was enough to make her freeze up or do something stupid. Like that time when she had an irrational crush on a first year and then sent an anonymous question to the headliner to find out if he was single and then didn't act upon it in any way. Ew. She just tried to forget about it when it happened.
Anyways, this was a duel, and they were supposed to be having fun and defending their house's honor, so there was nothing romantic in Nicky's mind. She just saw the whole situation and their conversation as a very amusing one. So she laughed even more at Robert's question, and then replied, laughing between words:
"Indeed, your chances there are about as good as your chances of winning this duel!"
It was probably the insane laughter that caused her to miss, but Sylvie proved her words right nevertheless, producing a flawless and perfectly aimed flipendo.
"Go Sylvie!" - Nicky exclaimed in excitement.
Then their opponent got struck by the lightning and Nicky stopped laughing. That must have hurt. However, she couldn't let herself be distracted by it since they were in the middle of a duel. Robert would be all right anyway eventually. She decided to just focus on her next spell.

• A Swing and a HIT •

Finally. Finally something Sylvie had casted connected with their opponent. It seemed like all she was doing was shooting all of her spells with her eyes closed. Unlike her partner, Sylvie didn't seem too fazed by Robert being struck by lightning, having cast it and all. Sending a smile of reassurance back to Nicky, she readied her wand once more. Hopefully it wouldn't be too long before this duel was over.

Robert's first reaction to Nicky's comeback was laughter. However, the young Ravenclaw was the wrong person to engage in a conversation about statistics. He quickly assessed his situation as objectively as possible. He was currently outnumbered, but he was also in much better shape than Nicky seemed to be. Weirdly enough, the past year of taking an unhealthy amount of damage seemed to have made him much more resilient now. Taking this into consideration, and also the fact that Sylvie didn't seem to be having much luck with her aim, he made a quick estimate based on basically nothing at all. "Really, around a 40 percent chance? That's much better than I expected." The only reason he managed to say this without turning another shade redder is because his mind was too occupied reveling in the intricate magic of numbers to realize what he was actually saying.

Immediately after these words left his mouth, he staggered backwards from the strong force of Sylvie's flipendo, walking straight into a bolt of lightning. It seemed that he'd judged Sylvie's aim too soon. Suddenly feeling much worse than a couple seconds ago, he felt it necessary to rethink his estimation. "Yeah, make that closer to 30 percent," he mumbled to himself, lips still numb from the electricity.

Well... it truly seemed like the duel Dmitri was overseeing loved to build him up just to put him down.

All three duelists chose to cast the same spell: Flipendo. It seemed to be a crowd-favorite spell, but it was quite telling of their experience. Pretty quickly, as one advanced in knowledge in skill, one would realize that a simple Knockback Jinx is not as good as it seems to be.

But who was he to judge? It wasn't like he was a captain or anything.

Still, even with the slow pace of the duel, there will always only be one house coming out on top. One way or another, this competition will end with a winner.

Just who this was exactly is still up for debate.

Sylvie groaned. This duel was so annoying, everyone kept missing! Not that it was their fault. Well. Kind of. It was. Regardless, it upset the very impatient Sylvie O'Niell. Her brow furrowed as she shook off whatever nerves could have possibly been affecting her spell whipping, but only luck could help her now.

They missed. Again. Oh well. This duel was far from over. Nicky listened to Robert babble about statistics. She actually thought it was interesting but there was no time for distractions. However, distracting her opponent would be a clever strategy.
"Really? Where did you get 40 percent from? Or even thirty? You're up against two people on your own, I'd make it twenty percent, at most".
While she was talking about percentages, she focused on her wand and prepared to cast another spell.

Robert's face lit up, despite his spell missing this round. The fact that Nicky had replied with any number as a comeback made him immensely happy, even if it was a rather dire prediction. He'd always admired the simple beauty of maths, and the idea of using them as a playful rib made him feel warm and slightly giddy. "Well, judging from the way this duel has been turning out, I decided to add in an extra factor for the possibility that Dmitri will get so bored, he comes down here and finishes all of us off. I'd count that as a win just as much as any other." The young boy gave their moderator an impish grin and a friendly wave.
