 | ⠀⠀ | Draven's breath came in staggered gasps, painful gulps of air making his head spin. Something deep inside his chest ached, wound so tight he was sure it might snap. Could fear take him out? Could the horrible fog that had settled over his head, blocking out everything else? The empty room stared back at him. From outside, the rattle of the lock and frustrated voices just barely filtered through the wood. He'd scrambled back, as far from the door as he could. But the Merlin dorms were underground. Behind him, past the stone walls, nothing but a great expanse of water awaited. The door shook, his roommate calling out from behind it. He couldn't explain it. Even as trembling hands pushed down the center of his chest, attempting to calm the wild beating of his heart, he couldn't verbalize the fear. There was something in the common room, but there wasn't. Something beyond the flames, watching him. Watching the rest of the students. It was lying in wait, biding its time. At night, it came out and stole kids. Dragged them away before they had a chance to scream. It was why so many students never returned. Why half his year was gone 'away' for 'family reasons', and 'transferred to another school'. That didn't happen. That many people didn't disappear without a reason. Quiet and reserved, Draven kept to himself most days, his nose buried in philosophy and poetry books. One wouldn't say he was antisocial, as he could hold his ground in a conversation; he simply preferred the company of dead authors. There weren't many people he opened up to, keeping a nearly frigid distance between himself and his peers - a stance learned perhaps from Mr. Mirador. He was the perfect son, really. The boy no one ever had to worry about. Which was good then, but would come to bite him soon enough.
Draven Mirador was a tall, slender boy with ashen skin and a head of curly black hair that always seemed to fall just right, no matter what time of day you caught him at. There were deep, dark circles around his eyes - courtesy of one too many nights spent reading. He was elegant and poised, standing with an air of quiet dignity. His clothing was expensive and well-made, his robes clean enough you could eat your lunch off them. He always smelled faintly of an airy, fresh cologne.

The Mirador manor had been dead silent for as long as Draven could remember it. The huge empty halls empty devoid of life, it's inhabitants being the only things that disturbed the frigid house. Abbadon. Rory. Iris. And Draven. The four of them against the world, fighting to keep their place amongst the living. Iris had lost that battle. After her death, Rory could no longer bear the quiet. So she made some noise. Noise that would last for a good long time. And then she left, taking away what little color there was.
And then there were two.
Mister Abbadon Mirador and Draven. The two men didn't know how to talk to one another, so they didn't. Draven raised himself, spending entire days in his father's giant library, pouring over the pages of books so thick he could barely lift them. They were what brought the color and the noise back. They were the only thing he needed. Draven lost himself in the stories, reveling in the adventures other little boys could go on, that he only needed to wait a few more years to join.
TC;DU - Abbadon Mirador married Rory, had two kids with her - Iris and Draven. Iris died during her 5th year at Hogwarts. She was on winter, skating on the lake behind the Mirador Manor. The ice wasn't as thick as she'd thought it was, and she wasn't quite as good a swimmer as she claimed she was. There was no one else around to save her when the heavy winter cloak dragged her down, no one to help her break the ice when she swam up and was met with a frozen lake keeping her from precious air.
She drowned. With the cold and the lack of air, it wasn't long before she could no longer fight and sank to the bottom.
Rory couldn't bear the quiet her death had left behind, so she coped the only way she knew how - by causing problems. Her cheating (of 7 years) was dicovered when she got careless. There was a rushed, quiet divorce which was kept off the papers to avoid soiling the Mirador name. And Mister Abbadon and Draven were left alone, with Abbadon nursing a broken heart and Draven having to practically raise himself, living vicariously through books.
THE SILENCE WAS DEFENING
Abbadon Mirador was always a withdrawn man, quiet and polite, doing his best to avoid drama. But after his divorce was finalized, he stopped talking all together. The chemists couldn't find anything wrong with him physically, yet there he was, not speaking. Over the years, he learned how to sign and used this method to communicate with Draven.
FIRST INSTANCE OF MAGIC
The first time Draven did magic saved his life. He'd climbed on the roof of the Mirador manor with his sister. While the two were talking, one of the shingles came loose. He slipped. He fell. He slid down the roof and went tumbling over the edge. Rather than plummeting to his death, smashing his head against the jagged rocks which lay at the bottom of the manor, he floated down gracefully. Panicking all the while nonetheless. That was the last time he climbed on the roof.

What's even stranger about his potion is that it will seem to have something moving inside it, as if a creature is swimming within its depths, disturbing the surface ever so slightly.

ReducioDeimos didn't like to be touched, Draven had gotten to know. He, like his owner, was very picky about whom he let close. Instead of cuddling against Draven like a cat, or bringing him tiny pebbles like an owl, Deimos showed his affection by...covering Draven in webs when he was bored. That, and sitting in places where Draven's heart beat.

It had gotten bad, worse than he would have liked to admit, the dark circles under his eyes looking more and more like bruises with each night he spent staring unseeingly at the top of his bed. So it would come as no surprise to anyone who stumbled across him during potions class, to see the ingredients going into his cauldron. His finished tincture was sitting on the front of his desk, a perfect potion bottled up and shining in the candlelight as he worked. He'd finished the class assignment earlier than most, and had started up on a rather rushed sleeping draft. It was a quiet process, one he'd memorized the night before, when he'd spent hours pouring over the ingredients list. A list that was nowhere to be seen as Draven was crushing lavender and standard ingredient in his mortar, turning the herbs into a fine powder. In his cauldron, flobberworm mucus and standard ingredient were bubbling quietly, a rather unpleasant smell floating up to the celling of the potions classroom. They had two hours left of class. Barely enough time to brew the potion. Draven's lips were pressed in a thin white line as he added a few measures of the ingredient to the cauldron, waving his wand over the top of the mixture. There was not much left to do but wait. And wait. And wait. The gillyweed had all been prepared, separate measurements of standard ingredient lined up meticulously on Draven's table, his knife, mortar, and pestle clean and packed away. Minutes trickled by slowly, ticked away by a clock in the corner of the room. Draven rearranged the valerian springs on his table, having blocked out the teacher as she droned on at the front of the classroom, talking about the potion the rest of the class was still brewing. They say I watched pot never boils, but this pot did. What seemed like a millennia later, the hourglass Draven had set beside it let its last grain of sand flow down to the bottom. Heaving a sigh of relief, the boy dropped two more measures of standard ingredient in, stirring up the flames underneath the cauldron. 'Heat on high temperature for one minute' the potion spellbook had said. Even the one minute seemed to pass by too slowly. Eventually, Draven added the last of his ingredients in, valerian springs and gillyweed following one after the other, boiling up beautifully into a dark purple potion. The familiar lavender smell was overwhelming and Draven drained his cauldron in two crystal vials, slipping them in his coat before anyone could say anything. |
