THIS IS A PRIVATE THREAD FOR:
@Orla Finch, @Percival Gray, @Hui Ming, @Simon Kincaid, @Adelaide Barlowe, @Finley Grey, @Della Barfield, and Professor @Orion Lécuyer
DATE: November 23rd, 2021 | TIME: 6:00 pm / 18:00
The vast expanse that made up the grounds of Hogwarts could be threatening beneath the blanket of night. It was usually a stark reminder of the dangers that lay beyond the castle grounds. Orion had come prepared to cast away the unforgiving dark; orbs of blue fire floated and crackled within several large mason jars. If a student should desire to stick their hand within the jar for Merlin knows what reason, they would find the flame cold to the touch and would withdraw with their skin unharmed.

The lights had been carefully arranged around a make shift dance floor, a wooden balancing bar attached to the right hand side, steady enough to hold at least a few hundred pounds. Not far away from the dance floor was a small table and two chairs, a grand looking glass chess set sat upon the dark wood table. Directly next to the chess table was a similar set up, only this time the table held four locks and several hair pins, paperclips, paper, and graphite pencils. On the opposite side of the dance floor, quite a few yards back, sat an archery target, two wooden bows were leaning against it, as well as two quivers full of arrows.

As the students entered the area, they would be greeted by the Frenchman, who was waiting for their arrival next to table which held a large tray of muffins, blueberry, pumpkin, chocolate, and cranberry were among the flavours. Next to the sweets was a steel thermos, which had been filled with hot chocolate to offer the students warmth from the crisp Autumn air. A rainbow selection of mugs accompanied the warm beverage. He wore a navy blue suit, which he may have cast a cleaning charm on several times throughout the day due to the various activities the other students had completed. This was his last group of the day, after all.

Whenever there was a sign-up for something new, Simon was interested in hearing what it was about and usually it sparked his interest to add his name to the list. It didn't matter if it was digging holes on the school grounds or participating in the Theater Club's Talent Show. When he read about Professor Orion Lécuyer having sign-ups where one could share their talent, he eagerly signed up. He had probably several talents, almost all musical in nature. There was singing, songwriting, playing the guitar or piano. He wanted something easy to learn though, something that one could learn in a small time frame, something that could be a good conversation starter or party trick. Dancing. He would teach others how to do the moonwalk as he was quite good at it.

But what he was also more eager about wasn't just sharing his talent with others, it was getting to know some more of his fellow students. Simon was passionate about passion. He loved when someone 'had their thing' and they explored it, learned more, expanded it. He liked sharing in that with his friends and knew he would enjoy getting to know the passions of other classmates that perhaps he didn't know as well.

When he first got the note from the Defense Against the Dark Arts instructor and saw that his group would be meeting on the Grounds he sighed a little, wondering why ALL the activities seemed to have to be outdoors. That wasn't so easy for his dhampir self. Simon perked up more when he saw the 6PM time slot. It would be dark by then across the landscape of Hogwarts.

On the evening of Tuesday, November 23rd, he made his way out from the Great Hall and out to the grounds, following a path of bright blue flames in floating lanterns guiding his way. Nice touch. He followed them and realized he was the first one there, all except the professor who already had everything set up. It was a unique array of items, from solid wooden flooring, to a chess set, to archery stuff, drawing supplies, and locks and hairpins. Closer to him was a table full of sweet things and hot chocolate, all of which he declined. Simon was never one for sweets. He greeted the professor and then walked over to one of the floating blue lanterns to admire the charm and magic behind what he was seeing.

Adelaide loathed the cold, dark winter nights. Quite frankly, it should be illegal for it to be pitch black out at 6pm. Nevertheless, she had dragged herself out of the warmth of the castle and into the Hogwarts grounds, wearing sweatpants and a hoodie so she didn't freeze to death. The blonde also had a backpack with her ballet slippers and also her pointe shoes in it, just incase she wanted to use them later. When she had heard about the Celebrate Your Unique Talent day Professor Orion was hosting, she knew she had to sign up. Adelaide wasn't sure whether to sign up with ballet or piano, but she had settled with ballet as that was the talent she loved the most and had the most passion for.

The young girl was aware that there were plenty of other ballerinas at Hogwarts, it wasn't exactly a 'unique' skill, but it was also very difficult and definitely wasn't a walk in the park. Hopefully she was placed in a group without any other ballerinas, so she could maybe teach some of them the basics, if they wanted her to. She was excited to see other student's talents and was hoping she could leave tonight with an interest in another skill.

Once she arrived, she realized she was one of the first to be there. There was only one other boy, who looked slightly older than her, and Professor Orion. There was a dance floor, a chess set, a table with locks and hairpins and graphite pencils, and an archery target. The archery set-up immediately interested her, she would have to find out who signed up with archery and hopefully she'd be able to learn a thing or two. She greeted Professor Orion before heading over to the table with some snacks and a thermos of hot chocolate. Adelaide grabbed a mug and poured herself some hot chocolate, instantly thankful for the warm drink. Holding the mug in one hand and grabbing a chocolate muffin with the other, she walked over to a boy standing beside one of the blue, floating lanterns. "Hi," she greeted him before taking a sip of the hot chocolate, "I'm Adelaide. What talent are you going to be doing tonight? I'm doing ballet."

Introductions with @Adelaide Barlowe and waiting on the others. Open to additional interaction.

He was about to reach out to touch the blue flame, or at least nearly so, when he heard the voice behind him and he smiled. It wasn't that he was some pyromaniac...really...it was just he was rather entranced by the magic of the lanterns. They were similar flames to the ones used at the Theater Club's Talent Show earlier that year for decoration and lighting but as a participant he hadn't gotten a good first hand look yet.

He didn't mind the interruption and was glad that someone else had arrived. One couldn't really share their talent if there weren't others around to share it with and something told him Professor Orion had done so great as to organize this event but that didn't mean he needed to be involved. It was a way for students to get together and learn something new or meet someone new, not for one on one time with the professor.

"Good evening. Pleasure to meet you, Adelaide," he said as he turned to her and greeted her with a smile. It was a very pretty name and whether she used a nickname or not, she still did her formal introduction with it. If he had been a girl with the name Adelaide, lethe would keep it Adelaide. "I'm Simon." He left out the last name because that would probably seem too formal since she only gave her first. Besides, while there might have been another Simon at Hogwarts, he had yet to meet him. Simon was good enough. "I'm also going to be showcasing a bit of dancing, but not ballet. A talented sport, I'll certainly give you that, and one that my body can't bend for," he smiled wider, thinking of that time he tried to attempt a sort of bend and stretch ballet move with Shanelle Meza in the Rehearsal Room. It had gone wrong. No, ballet was for the trained and for the talented.

He didn't initially add that he was going to teach the moonwalk, because having just met the blonde girl,l he was afraid he might be met by an eyeroll. These ballerinas too their dancing seriously! There was much to be said for that, but he hoped she also liked some of those let loose moments as well.

Cold days on the grounds didn't particularly bother Gray, considering he liked going on brisk walks in the mornings during most conditions. Even so, he still decided to wear a warm black jacket that kept him safe from the elements. Walking along he didn't bring anything but himself, all that was needed was a clear voice and a vinyl player which was sure to be already set up at the grounds before his arrival. He wasn't nervous by the slightest, after all, if he did make a hash of it the people in attendance were not going to speak a word.

Gray knew the reasons for being there. He needed to set the example as a prefect to take yourself out of the comfort zone and do something you love, even if it meant revealing something that was meant to stay hidden. When he was younger, he always used to sing with his mother who played the piano for him. Sometimes they'd even play together, but that was only a few songs considering his piano knowledge was limited.

It didn't take long until he reached the performance area, one of which was littered with pretty blue flames. Luckily these were harmless, considering a real fire was surely going to cause havoc like it usually did. Gray inspected one closely before turning his attention to the group, most of them being fresh faces to him. The teacher, Orion was a new professor who he hadn't had a chance to meet properly. Further down the line, he hoped to have a chance to pick his brain on a few things. On the other hand, two students had already arrived and eagerly chatted to each other about the evening. He dreaded to think what their talents were but maybe they would surprise him.

"Evening you two..." he said in his usual uninterested tone, not even bothering to look at the pair as he lightly picked up a piece of chocolate and placed it into his mouth "The name is Gray, Percival Gray" the prefect turned and slowly gave them a lackluster nod, his cold eyes glaring between the pair "So, do you care to introduce yourselves?"

If there was one thing about Orla Finch, it was that she adored the cold. It wasn’t something that she wasn’t often accustomed to as the winters in Killin were rather mild in comparison to other places in Scotland. There was something so magical and wonderful and fantastical about icy nights and snowy days. Even with the day fading quicker than usual, that only meant that the stars had more time to shine in the night, and to Orla, that was an exciting prospect. Despite her love of the cold, Orla had more sense than to dress as if they’d be indoors. She bundled herself up with a nice coat and a scarf that would protect her from the possibility of a wind chill.

Satisfied with the layer of warmth she’d created, Orla was on her way. She couldn’t deny that she was excited. While she was a typically extroverted individual, she’d been having trouble making many friends. She’d connected with a friend from her childhood and another first year that she’d met on the Hogwarts Express had been close with her the entire semester, but for the most part, Orla had been rather reserved. This opportunity was a chance to show her very awesome and not illegal skills. They were not illegal, she reminded herself. They were cool. And useful.

If it was possible to skip the entire way to the performance area, Orla did it. She was bursting with excitement and she couldn’t keep it inside her little body. She was ecstatic and it was hard not to show it. So, as the girl pranced through the castle and towards their designated area, she hummed a little song to herself. She’d practiced her demonstration several times, making sure she was doing an adequate job teaching others her talent. And she was pretty satisfied with it. Orla didn’t make such a bad teacher after all.

As she arrived, her eyes lit up at the sight of the area. Everything was there. People, necessary equipment for each demonstration, and Professor Orion, who she greeted with an overeager wave. This place was magnificent. Sweets! And hot chocolate! Oh, this was even better than Orla could’ve ever imagined. But first– She wouldn’t jump on the treats quite yet. Orla waddled her way over to the three students, having no problem quickly interjecting herself. “Hello!” Orla practically chirped. She sure was excited, there was no problem seeing that. She’d managed to catch the tail end of Mr. Percival Grey’s introduction, which she was thankful for. “Is that Percival, like the knight of the round table?” Orla asked the older Slytherin. “I’m Orla Finch! Finch… Like the bird.” She grinned before looking at the other two. She recognized the boy vaguely. She knew he was a Hufflepuff but she wasn’t certain of his name… “It’s nice to meet you all. What can I call you two?”

Interacting with all that's there so far in Group 6

The blonde girl who would be showcasing her ballet seemed very nice and open to conversation, contrasting the next individual to join. A Slytherin boy came up and greeted them, but it seemed only out of politeness. He gave them not a moment of their time as his eyes scanned the sweets but then he asked if they cared to introduce themselves. Perhaps he was just having a bad day, not a bad life. Simon hoped that was the case and that maybe the evening would help spark his enthusiasm.

Another joned them, this time a Hufflepuff girl and she seemed more upbeat, more...his style. Simon smiled to her as she introduced herself as well. "Well, you could most likely call us amazing if you'd like, but if you'd like birth names - I'm Simon Kincaid. Good evening, Percival. Good evening, Orla." He would greet both the new ones that had joined them.

"You ready for some talent showcasing?" he asked the group of three with him so far, curious to how many more might join them. There was a good deal of props all laid out so he was sure that more were anticipated. "I think this was a pretty cool idea that the professor had," he had to throw out the compliment. Simon really enjoyed getting to know his fellow Hogwarts schoolmates and this was a way to see some of what they were passionate about, or at least something they could share with others.

OOC NOTICE
Players do not need to wait for another person's character to finish their talent before performing their own. For example, if someone else's character is playing the violin and no conclusion to the performance was mentioned, you may still post that your own character performed a dance. IC, if it doesn't make sense that two talents would be done at the same time, then you might write out your character reacting to another's talent, then showing their own once that talent is finished. There simply isn't enough time before the deadline for everyone's talents to [OOC] be performed at separate times.

This also serves as a reminder that the errand deadline is December 14th, barely over a week after the time of this notice. Please be certain to meet the word count requirement and detail your character performing their talent before that time. You may continue to role play in this thread following that date, but if the requirements are not met by then, you will receive no rewards for the errand.

"It's a pleasure to meet you too, Simon," she took another sip of her hot chocolate before taking a bite out of the muffin, which tasted absolutely divine. She swallowed before replying to Simon, "Yes, ballet is quite difficult, but I do love it. Truthfully, any type of dance takes a lot of practice and hard work. What type of dance are you going to be showing exactly?" She questioned him. Another boy soon joined them, although his entire body seemed to be radiating 'I would rather be anywhere else but here right now'. She raised an eyebrow, "You don't seem to be very eager to be here, Percival," she pointed out, "I'm Adelaide Barlowe." Hopefully the boy just wasn't eager to be out in the cold and he would warm up later in the evening, Adelaide couldn't particularly blame him if that was the case, she didn't enjoy the cold weather either.

She finished off her muffin just as another girl joined them, this one certainly a lot more enthusiastic than Percival. Adelaide smiled at her, "It's nice to meet you Orla! I'm Adelaide Barlowe," she greeted the girl then turned to Simon, "I am indeed ready for a night of talent showcasing." She finished off her hot chocolate and sat the mug back down on the table before making her way over to the makeshift dance floor, "Anyone call dibs on going first?" She asked the group, "I don't mind going first if no one else wants to." She said whilst taking her ballet slippers out of her bag and changing into them.

Even dressed in additional layers of warm clothes, the frigid evening air was unpleasant for the bespectacled first year. But Hui Ming barely registered this unpleasantness, focused as he was on something far more immediate. Ever the soul of propriety, the boy would never dream of running. But it was a close thing.

Hui Ming was late. Again.

It was becoming something of a norm, two months into the Hogwarts curriculum. Who could have guessed that maintaining two whole syllabi and researching a whole new world could run a person ragged? Everyone, that’s who. The muggle studies prof had pretty much told him so on the first day of classes. But Hui Ming, ever proud, had forged ahead regardless. And it was starting to show; at least for those that knew where to look.

His clothes were no longer pristine but marred by occasional wrinkles. He no longer stood in a perfect posture but slouched ever so slightly. His words were no longer as carefully chosen.

And so when Ming hurried into the designated location some ten minutes past the allotted time, it was no surprise to see that several people were already present. Some of these people, he recognized immediately, either from their faces or their names – most of them first-years. But he also recognized Prefect Gray, who had shown him how to enter his dorms, and of course Professor Orion.

“Apologies,” he said calmly upon entering, despite his racing hearty and his icicle fingertips. “The time had gotten away from me, there.”

A pause, as he looked around, trying to gauge the reaction to his delay.

Wasn’t @Della Barfield supposed to be here too?

“I hope I have not missed too much?”
OC note: Will probably just go ahead and give a lecture on chess movements, pins and forks and skewers on Thursday if no one goes ahead and shows their skills off first. Deadlines and all.

The curtains fell. And the silence was deafening
