Scarlet hadn’t minded the idea of missing the summer camp when her parents told her that they would instead by going on a family holiday, after all she would have been going there without knowing anybody else, not to mention it would cut short her time spent with her parents before she started at the school in September.

Of course when they told her, two days before they were supposed to be travelling to Italy, that they in fact had to postpone the trip indefinitely, which almost certainly meant till next year, she was less than pleased. No more sun, sea and those boats that took you through the streets full of water, or so she had heard, she asked if she could still go to the summer camp, and that’s when her father suggested Paris.

Clearly the disappointment of not having a holiday that year had appeared more strongly on her face than she thought, as her father quickly jumped in with an alternative, “don’t you worry though, you’ll still get a trip abroad this summer,” she should have said then that she didn’t really mind, ”grandpa and grandma have invited you to stay with them in Paris, now that’s something,” he had said, trying hard to make up for cancelled trip. As expected her mother quickly shot down the idea, it wasn’t that Scarlet disliked her grandparents, she loved them, what she hated was how her parents would argue about them, with her mother wanting to spend as little time with them as was polite too, and her father believing it was good for Scarlet to have them as part of her life. Even after she had gone up to her room for the night, she heard them discussing her grandparents, right up until the moment she fell asleep.

By morning a decision had clearly been made, and her father was evidently the most persuasive, Scarlet spent most of the day picking out clothes and other things to pack for her trip, she was excited at the thought of going back, the last time she had been there was to visit her uncle at Christmas. As was normal the day before a trip, the busyness of getting everything ready made time fly by, as did the journey to France.

Arriving at the Everbone estate in the affluent town of Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche, bordering Paris, Scarlet enjoyed catching up with her grandparents, it had been a long time since she had spoken to them in person and she realised that she had missed it. Before being shown her room and left alone for the night, her grandfather went through what he thought might be fun for them all to do whilst she was there, finishing with his plans for the next evening. ”There is actually a ball of sorts tomorrow evening that your grandmother and I had planned for us all to attend, the two of you can choose a nice dress for you to wear, and it’s going to be right in the centre of Paris!” Scarlet thought it sounded wonderful, but she was also curious, ”what’s the party for?” she asked in response.

”You know how me and your grandmother are both magic, and so are our parents and there’s before that, and the same on your father’s side, well that makes us Purebloods, a special type of witch or wizard, the party is for lots of families like us.” Scarlet knew about her blood status and what it meant, she knew all to well her mother’s disagreement with her grandparents views, but maybe she could go to this and tell her mother that it was fun and everyone was nice, then maybe the family’s lines of communication would open up again.

Aside from the finely dressed witches and wizards that would slowly trickle inside, the building was like any other on the street, each spanning at least double the width of any other house they had seen in the city and each a clear indicator of the wealth of their occupier. Upon entering, their coats were taken by one of two men dressed in all white suits, revealing Scarlet’s red dress beneath, they were led into a bright ballroom of sorts, though there was no dancing. Whilst music was being played from a small band on one side of the hall, the room was filled with chatter and some guests had congregated into small, or bigger groups, whilst others drifted from person to person making conversation.

It was a little overwhelming, at first glance it was a room full of adults, looking more closely she saw that clearly people had come as whole families and there were other younger faces, but it was all so different from the country house and surrounding woods she was used to, and most comfortable spending her time. ”Lets introduce you to some people shall we,” her grandmother said, taking a hold of her hand and leading her into the main space of the hall, now only time would tell if Scarlet would fit in with these people, and more importantly, their views.

Summer days were often longwinded and timeless for Cade. Every season leading up to this year was spent at the family townhome in Ottery Saint Mary. And while Cade spent his days adventuring around the moors of East Devon, he found it quite dull at times. There was only so much one could do on shire land by themselves. So when his father, Charles, reappeared from his fast-paced life abroad, Cade keenly clung to his every word. Reliving his father's experiences with the odd wizards of other countries and provinces. Cade would hope to have some semblance of that during his upcoming year at Hogwarts. It would be his very first time living away from home and studying magic, there was bound to be some adventures. But Charles had other notions up his sleeve upon his return home.

At first, Cade was disappointed to find out that he wouldn't be staying quite as long as he used to. A week was much too short. And Cade almost devised a plan to ensure his father's company for a longer time period. But that idea quickly proved to be obsolete. Cade couldn't believe his ears... I think you would quite like it in France. I won't be so busy... and I can imagine it'll be quite some time before I see you again what with your acceptance into Hogwarts. So? What do you say, Cade? Do you want to join me in Paris?

It was as if Christmas came early. For a moment the poor kid was speechless absolutely thrilled at the prospect of being by his father's side. It was all he ever dreamed of going to travel. But he couldn't help but wonder --why now? Regardless Cade quickly agreed to partake in world travel. And suddenly the week didn't feel quite as short. The days went by way too long with the sudden urge to leave England. Cade would pack and repack his bag with anticipation. Wondering what he might have packed too much and too little of. And settling for the bare minimum he was surprised when Charles came back home after a day out with dress robes for Cade to pack. And unsurprisingly, they fit like a glove. Suddenly curious, Cade would ask what they were for. But Charles, always mysterious gave a cryptic answer that the young wizard couldn't possibly figure out.

Then the time came for goodbyes and Cade was far too excited to really put meaning into any of it. He was admittedly brusk with both his mother, Peggy, and sister, Astrid. Eager to leave his home behind for a time of adventure. And by the time the scheduled portkey arrived, Cade was quaking in his boots! Paris was exhilarating! There was so much to see and do, and the food! Cade hadn't realized just how much his stomach could hold. Each day was busier than the next. His father networked non-stop it seemed. And Cade absolutely enthralled by this lifestyle tried desperately to keep up with it all. But such things were not made for him. The shy introvert he was, demanded solitude. And there was only so much he could do.

So when the dress robes were finally put to use, it was no surprise that the event was yet another networking opportunity. But this time it wasn't as interesting to the young wizard. He had grown used to Charles' fake smiles and small talk. The charm his father pressed onto others became unimpressive and Cade, finally unenthused fell into his aloof state of mind. Drawing back from his father's limelight, he would opt for his large shadow, hiding behind while he made introductions. Cade quickly discovered that this wasn't the sort of event to talk of muggles. The wizard-folk here were highly conservative when it came to the subject of blood status. And Cade felt a pang of disappointment in his chest at the thought that Charles frequented these sorts.

Feeling somewhat betrayed, Cade would slide into a darker mood for the party and whether or not Charles noticed or even cared didn't matter to him. As the night went on more families appeared and before the young wizard knew it, Charles was introducing him to the Everbones. An elderly couple who seemed friendly, but Cade was wary of them anyway. Anyone who resided at this party was bigotted in his eyes. Regardless he would nod politely at them and soon after his name disappeared from their ensuing conversations, he knew he could relax again. But at that moment his eye caught onto a girl around his age who clearly was related to the Everbones. Cade suddenly felt sorry that he hadn't paid any mind to the other introductions.

He wondered if she held the same views as her guardians if she was just like him in this regard. Cade would muse at this for some time before ultimately deciding that she couldn't be half bad if she was his age... born at this time. He would attempt to make some sort of friendship. "Er... sorry, I don't think I caught your name. The band is a tad bit loud in my opinion." Cade would voice aloud in her direction, his brown eyes swept over her dainty features with intense curiosity. Cade would hate to involve himself with a stranger not worth his time. Was this a risk worth the night?

At first, Scarlet was quite excited to meet some of the finely dressed people that filled the room, but by the time her grandparents were done talking with their third lot of snooty pureblood friends, her face had actually started to ache from all the fake smiles she had been putting on. If this is what purebloods were generally like, Scarlet felt like she might finally have some understanding of why her parents had drifted away from her grandparents, and their pureblood customs.

Scarlet took in face after face, some old, some young, none quite as young as her from what she had so far seen, but spoke as if from one person. In her own defence though, Scarlet did not enter the party with the views of her parents fixed in her mind, she in fact saw the whole event as an opportunity to come to her own conclusions, she just did not expect to do so as quickly as she had done.

The next wizarding family to be introduced to her however slightly peaked her interest, well duo as she looked over the man and younger boy stood in front of her. Scarlet smiled as the adults said their obligatory greetings and smiled as her grandparents introduced her to the pair, 'Darkbound!' she thought, repeating their family name in her head, that was a pretty cool name to have, very fitting of a pureblood family she thought. She could definitely imagine them having a long lineage of ancestors spanning hundreds of years with a name like that.

The boy didn't seem quite as interested in the whole conversation, and so Scarlet was surprised that not long after she glanced up, listening to what Charles, the father, was saying to her grandparents, the boy spoke up. He seemed nice, from the one sentence she had heard from him, well it's not like he was rude or anything, and that was always a good start.

"It's Scarlet. Scarlet Salvatore, they are my mum's parents," she explained, "it's Cade right?" she asked remembering perfectly well from the introductions exchanged that Cade was his name, it just felt like a good counter question.

"They are a bit," Scarlet said as she looked over to where the band were playing, they were relatively close to the group of musicians so it wasn't really a surprise that Cade hadn't heard her name the first time. She then looked over to where the long table of refreshments was, not completely opposite of the band, but a good deal further from where they were stood now.

"Do you want to get a bite to eat," she asked Cade pointing to the table of food before giving a sideways glance to the band, "I've just realised I haven't had anything to eat," she added, though she was feeling only slightly peckish, it was mainly to get to a quieter place to talk.

Before hearing an answer from Cade, Scarlet turned to her grandfather who was stood to her left, "we're just going to get something to eat," she said smiling up to him, with her grandmother still mid-discussion with Cade's father and her grandfather probably wanting to turn his attention back to that conversation he gave a quick nod whilst returning a similar smile.

Scarlet looked back to Cade, she had heard what she needed to, she didn't know if Cade was going to say anything to his father, she hadn't been looking to see if the man had heard what she had said to her grandfather. "After you," she said to him, giving him the opportunity to say anything before the pair went anywhere.
