Getting to the train station had been a pain and a half. Without a proper witch on hand with Floo powder and other magical means of transportation, Verity had been forced to rely entirely on muggle transit. It was an eleven hour journey from Ringaskiddy to London, one that required a passport and a ferry crossing. Uncle Sean, who’d just returned from two months at sea, and Aunt Liv drove in shifts while Ver and her giant trunk squished together in the backseat. She didn’t dare say a word the entire trip lest they decide to turn the car around when she was thisclose to making it to Hogwarts.

Uncle Sean didn’t look her in the eye till they’d arrived at the station and loaded her trunk onto a trolley. He fixed her with his steady, sailor’s gaze and said, plain as day, “I am never doing that again.” He got back in the car and slammed the door. Verity winced. Aunt Liv’s goodbye wasn’t much better: “Remember what we said about Christmas.” As if she could forget. Verity stubbornly wheeled the trolley around and headed into the station so she wouldn’t have to watch them peel off into the city traffic.

“Like I’d want to visit them,” Verity muttered. She was going to be spending Christmas in a literal castle; she’d be fine. Actually, no, she was already fine. Better than fine. She was going to Hogwarts! Life couldn’t get any better.

Verity practically flew through the station, taking on the barrier between platforms nine and ten at a flat out sprint. She breezed through just like the professor said she would and found herself on a platform full of her soon to be schoolmates. It was even better than she’d imagined. Quick as a flash, Verity dragged her trunk off the trolley and into one of the train’s cars -there was no way she was getting left behind.

After lots of huffing and puffing past overflowing compartments, Verity made it to an empty one. Miracle of miracles. She heaved her trunk inside, then dropped onto the nearest seat to catch her breath. If somebody else came along looking for a seat, she’d heave her stuff onto the luggage rack. For now, though, it sure did make a good footrest.

Cross' luggage was chasing him down the train corridors. Which, he was willing to bet, hadn't happened to a lot of people (especially at seven am in the morning). Whatever spell his dad had cast on it before they'd left home made the trunk very, very determined to never leave his side. Even if that meant hovering above his head in all it's ripped up, I-Was-Bought-During-The-Great-Recession glory.

Finding a compartment wasn't as bad as last year, when both him and Paris had been determined to find a place to have all to themselves, so that an epic tournament of Cups and Wizards could commence. But that problem wouldn't present itself this year. Sliding open the apple wood doors, Cross slipped inside the compartment with a meek smile, offering a wave to the girl already there. "Mind if I join you?" he asked, hovering in the doorway.

Daemon Cross was a strange boy. Tall and lanky with a head of curly hair which was slowly but surely turning into an afro. He was well dressed for someone with such a dusty trunk, expensive looking muggle clothing hanging loosely off his frame, and a faint scent of peaches and mint surrounding him. A long chestnut wood wand was tucked behind his ear, the tip poking out through the mass of curly hair.

Mercy sighed. She clutched her luggage, and hopped onto the magical train. The Hogwarts Express matched her parent's description perfectly, from the outside to the inside. They had been on this train 7 times before, of course.

Mercy felt like she definitely overpacked, she procrastinated until the night before and grabbed everything she would possibly ever need and stuffed it into her trunk. Still, she was questioning whether or not she packed enough socks.

She had gotten here surprisingly early, most of the seats were empty. Instead of sitting down on an empty seat, she settled on a cabin with 2 other students. One student was very tall and had a wand behind his ear. The other student was using her luggage as a footrest. They both looked very nice, and Mercy wanted to make friends, of course.

"Hello," She said. "Can I sit here?" She teetered on and off of her tiptoes.

She was currently wearing a white collared shirt with jeans. The jeans had magenta and green patches that she had sewn onto them. It was pretty casual, considering Mercy who loved to wear fancy clothing. Her cotton candy pink hair was tied back into a short braid. She was wearing a special geode necklace that her father had given her on her last birthday. It was her personal good luck charm, she wore it whenever she needed luck the most. This was one of those moments.

Verity perked right up when the tall, dark-haired dude appeared in the door. A person! Nah, scratch that - a magic person. There was no doubting it, what with the wand behind his ear and the levitating trunk. He had super nice clothes, too. Hopefully that wasn’t a wizard thing. Her oversized sweatshirt and leggings def weren’t gonna win her any style points. At least her converse were new. Ish.

But, anyway: would she mind if a cool kid and his flying luggage sat with her? Verity swallowed back a giggle. Five minutes in and her new life was already awesome. “Course not,” she grinned, “I’d love the company.”

And, speaking of, here came somebody else. A girl this time, with, get this, pink hair. Pink hair! Aunt Liv would’ve thrown a snit fit if she’d seen it. Verity leapt to her feet, fizzy with the thrill of being around other magic kids to slug around for another second.

“Hi! Yes, you can totally sit here. Both of you. Obviously.” She yanked her trunk upright and shoved it towards the window to make more room, then chucked her rucksack on top of it in a lovely old heap. Much better.

“I’m Verity,” she said, flicking her hair behind her ears, “First year, from Ringaskiddy. Ireland.” The last bit came out like an afterthought cause she’d only just remembered that there were gonna be kids from all over at Hogwarts. Then: “Anything I can help carry?” She might not be stylish, but she sure for sure make herself useful.

"Awesome!" Cross beamed, giving his luggage a little push. It floated down to rest underneath one of the benches, fitting neatly in the admittedly cramped space. There wasn't much to the cabin. Tall windows which let in waves of gray light, and benches with elegant pink cushions; they looked comfier than his bed at home. In one of the armrests, someone had carved initials and surrounded them by a scratched in heart.

Cross slid in the seat next to the window, his lanky frame somehow defying all known laws of physics and taking up half the bench. Where he was skinny, our boy was tall. Like a stringbean or a weed. Puberty, it seems, had hit early, leaving Cross not knowing what to do with his too long limbs.

From inside his cloak, there came a ribbit. Cross pushed down a snort, reaching inside and scooping out a handful of chocolate frogs. "Anyone hungry?" he asked, tossing one of the sweet treats at each girl, basketball style. "Kobe!" he called out, knowing full well they wouldn't get the reference. The frogs made their displeasure known, croaking in tiny panicked voices and trying to escape from the second year's grasp. "I grabbed a few for the road. The snacks from the cart lady person are super overpriced," he shrugged.

Edme had been wandering the train for a solid five minutes and still hadn't found a compartment that hadn't been already filled with people. Well, no, that wasn't true. She had found a compartment, but the other two kids in there told her to bugger off, and being herself, they decided to leave the two alone.

So here they were, crammed between the walls of the train and still searching for a compartment.

Her robes kept hitting the walls, making flapping noises and making her even more nervous about the train then she was before. It was practically a sanctuary for loud, restless, tiresome children who just wanted to get off the train. She supposed she did as well.

They finally found a compartment, though it was currently occupied by three others. A tall boy, a pink haired girl, and an excitable.

"Um..." Edme tried to grasp the attention of them, not wanting to say something and have to be asked to repeat. She hated having to repeat herself, especially if she was already nervous to begin with, "Do you mind if I..."

They nearly scolded herself for the croaks that escaped her mouth. Just ask them if you can sit here. Well, no matter at that point, she had already said the words, and no one was foolish enough to not be able to interpenetrate those words. Her luggage felt like it was weighing their
entire arm down, and the need to place it somewhere became increasingly clear.

"Come in," Cross said smoothly, moving aside to make some room for the other. The kid was lingering in the doorway with a firm grasp on their trunk, looking about as nervous as he expected from a first year.

A chocolate frog went leaping in the newcomer's direction as Cross got up and took their luggage, helping her push it underneath one of the benches beside his own. "I'm from London," he said, sitting back down with a sigh. "You're all first years then? I haven't seen you around before...which is saying something." Cross knew a lot of people, even if it was just from running into them around the hallways, or going to class with them.

"Hogwarts is great" the second year mused, pulling the wand from out his hair, and running his fingers over it. The feeling of magic at his fingertips once more was relieving more than anything. He'd gotten so used to being able to use spells that during the summer he'd felt like a man missing his crutch.

"Plus I spend more time in detention than in class. So if you ever get in trouble, I'll probably there with you." he grimaced, setting the wand on the windowsill. Detention had certainly been a lot more fun with Paris in it. "Do you guys play cards?"

A packet of exploding snap cards was produced from god knows where, because Cross had certainly not opened his bag. "I don't actually know how to use this properly. I've been playing poker with them instead."

"Yeah, I'm a first year," Mercy replied, smiling. He pulled out a deck of cards and asked if they wanted to play. "Oh, wow! Of course!" She hopped over to one of the seats and plopped down. "My father and I used to play cards all of the time!" Her smile suddenly turned into a frown as she remembered her father. Was she homesick already? She had just left home! It was very clear, she was certainly going to be missing her father, very much.

Mercy immediately changed the subject and cleared her throat. "Well, you seem to know alot about Hogwarts already... assuming that you've been there at least for one year. Do you mind telling me a bit about it before we get to the school?" Sure, her parents talked to her about Hogwarts, she just wanted to learn about the story from some different point of views. "Also how is the food there?" She asked hesitantly. "Is there any bananas in it? I am very allergic to bananas?" Her parents never talked about the food at hogwarts. And of course, Mercy was overly curious about it.
