Ugh! Seriously? Was it really so hard to hit someone with a simple spell? Evidently, it was, judging by the fact that only one of the spells (more or less) had actually met its mark when cast. Sure, yeah, Maggie's skills lie less on the cusp of spell casting and more up in the air on a broomstick, but this was just getting ridiculous. Plus, her arsenal of spells was far smaller than the others at the event, who were casting some Maggie had never even heard of left and right. Only a few useful spells in her corner, no clear spell advantage, and absolutely no alliances.

The only hard and fast rule she had for herself was not to target Liana again. Jeopardizing the friendship she had made and honestly quite valued at this point was not of the essence, even if it was just a silly little game. It seemed to be a silly little game that Liana cared about, and despite Maggie's own opinions about the value of a dumb little dueling tournament, Liana cared and that was what mattered.

Thus, Della's removal from the game left Maggie with one target. Another friend, yes, but one she had already gotten into a friendly repartee with. A banter, an easy rivalry that didn't really mean much. Avery Chen, watch your back. Even though Maggie had yet to hit him with a spell in all her attempts, watch your back!

As the duel was coming to its closing stages, the two quidditch players seemed to have zoned in on each other. Avery, perhaps displaying his Slytherin side yet again, demonstrated that there was more to duelling than spells and athleticism. So wroth was Maggie by the words directed at her, that she was too distracted to cast properly. Worse still, in her attempt to get back at the second-string keeper, Maggie did not notice the knockback jinx sent her way.

Matthew, meanwhile, had stopped casting altogether, to the point that Ming had started to worry for the boy. Liana seemed to have no such compulsions, and targeted the enigmatic Slytherin, hitting him dead center.

"Are you doing alright over there, Gray" Ming could not help but call out, his formal tone tinged with worry. Even for laughs, just standing our and being cast at did not seem like normal behaviour.

Meanwhile, outside of the ring, the Nurse Brumby had been looking after the two duellists who had thus far been knocked out. Both @Hildegard Schneider and @Della Barfield had, with time, regained consciousness and healed to the nurse's satisfaction. Both ladies would now be free to leave the event if they desire, or to spectate and interact with other spectators if they wish to stay.

For a second time in a row, she managed to land a successful spell. That was her best streak today, which was actually very poor performance in general. Still, the satisfaction was there. Perhaps she was finally getting back on track. A tad too late, as the cramping pain in her legs and the overall aching body told her, but still. At least she might raise her body count to two before going down herself.

And Matt wouldn't mind being knocked out by her, right? Nobody perceived her as a traitor for breaking off the initial alliance, surely? She really hoped so. Gray didn't seem at all bent on winning. He didn't seem bent on doing anything at the moment. Which caused Ming to call out from the spectator stands, questioningly. But his concern was unnecessary. Probably. Yeah, of course Matt just wanted out of the game as soon as possible, because the less people remained, the more eyes were observing his above-average performance. And she was doing him a favour. An act that everybody else may just interpret as her being sneaky and ruthless. Which, now that she thought of it, was not really worth it. This strange boy may thank her for it, but won't a lot more people think of her poorly after the Wargames?

Hopefully not. Hopefully she was just overestimating other people's interest in her. Probably nobody will think about her turning on someone who had been an ally for most of the game, and taking him out coldly in a few hits. At least Avery and Maggie seemed too focused on their own feud to pay any mind to what the other two competitors were doing. The spectators, however, would be watching attentively. Liana pressed her lips together, grasping at the last bits of her fading resolve.

Either Avery Chen was completely un-hittable, or Maggie was just sucky at aim. Every single spell that she was thrown his way missed, conveniently. Had Avery somehow implemented a system in which it was virtually impossible to hit him? Was that possible? Wizarding methods, Maggie guessed, or something of the sort. Even though her time at Hogwarts had been a few months yet, she still didn't entirely understand all that magic could do. All the things it could accomplish. Heck, she still hadn't gotten a handle on how much wizarding culture influenced muggle culture yet!

There were greater, more pressing matters to tend to, though. Avery Chen was winning this game by a landslide. And even though Maggie was fairly certain that Liana and Avery had some sort of alliance prior to the games (though she couldn't be entirely sure), she also would like to think that she and Liana had an understanding. Maybe they could gang up on Avery, knock him down a peg.

In a strictly friendly way, that was. Because Avery was Maggie's friend and she'd never ever really and truly start something of a true, real rivalry with him over something as trivial as a little dueling game. Unless he did something truly despicable and deserving of a rivalry, that is.

Standing her ground and hoping that this spell would land, Maggie grinned, bared her wand, and readied herself.

"Halt," the first-year moderator said almost suddenly, causing Liana's spell to veer off course and bounce harmlessly off a wall. Ming approached Matthew, then. A hushed conversation later, the moderator announced, "Mister Gray has forfeited."

This event had not gone at all in the way that Ming had expected. There had been many surprises, and he had to be better prepared should he plan to continue his little plan.
After both the Slytherin boys made their way off the ring, leaving only three, Ming said, almost as an afterthought: “You may now resume.”

It appeared that his announcement had been unnecessary as the Quidditch players were focused completely on each other. Almost simultaneously, both of them cast at each other, before attempting to twist out of the path of the other’s spell. Maggie managed to do this successfully, and the Knockback jinx aimed at her passed by her harmlessly.

Avery, meanwhile, was less successful. Maggie’s spell clipped him on the waist, levitating him…but not fully. The boy’s left side started levitating higher, and higher still; but his right side did not keep up. It resulted in an absurd view of Avery almost being rotated forty degrees, the entire weight of his body shifting suddenly to his right side. Would he be able to hold his balance and orientation, or would he topple? Or perhaps Maggie would get a grip and manage to levitate him fully.

Regardless of what happened, the boy was now a sitting duck for the girls.

Finally! Finally, Maggie was able to hit Avery. Except that the only spell she managed to land on him was one that wouldn't inflict any real damage, which was just lucky. Just her luck, really, something that Maggie was quite used to. She really had a great sense of aim, didn't she? What a joke.

Except that Liana hadn't aimed for her, had she? Were they now entangled in an unspoken alliance? Were they teaming up against Avery, the two of them? Because if so, they might have a fighting chance. If Avery didn't lose, at least he would go down with their efforts. He wasn't winning without a fight. Nope, Maggie would make sure that Liana and herself lost with style. No Hawkins girl would go down without a good attempt, a good effort.

In all honesty, using the levitation spell on Avery was just for her own peace of mind. Because seeing him dangle high above herself and Liana would be just hilarious, watching him hang halfway limp without being able to hold himself sturdy and completely aloft up there. Was there anything wrong with disrupting a duel just to see your friend look ridiculous? Maggie sure hoped not.

Finally dropping the spell, Maggie grinned as Avery fell down to the floor, made eye contact with Liana in an unspoken word, and held her ground to cast her next spell.

Well now, things appear to have taken a sinister turn. With the smoke all cleared up, Vale could see what exactly was going on now. From Matt forfeiting for mysterious reasons, to Avery now being strung up like a piñata for the last girls battling. It was all too amusing to Vale that she couldn't hold in her trademark laugh at the scene.

"To think you lot got it in you! You guys are way more exciting than I anticipated!" Vale stood up, leeching the stand to crackle and encourage her peers to fight to the death end.

Vale kept her laughter, unable to keep the energy inside her contained. She didn't even care who would win, just whoever could prove to be superior. It was sinister, horrific and even more so, pleasing for the young Ashwood. Vale wish she could take her new study peers all out for ice cream, if even just for a little while.

Ashes was left on the floor during Vale's excitement. "Come on! Is that all the smoke there is? Throw some more out! More!" Vale stopped her shouting, turning her head to Hui Ming.

"Hui Ming!" Vale pointed towards him, "Come here, please!" She beckoned, hoping he'd actually come over as requested. "I gotta ask you something~!" Vale made a large smile. A sign that she may have been up to nothing good.

It didn't seem like Matt needed much more before he got eliminated like Hildegard and Della. One more hit, perhaps? And this was what he wanted, right? To be knocked out before he attracted too much attention? Or... or did he just actually get tired and overwhelmed with all the action? No, from what she'd seen of him this didn't seem right. And anyhow, maybe being forcefully put to sleep and then reawakened would help him function better, like some weird Muggle appliance. It wouldn't hurt to try. She sent a yet another Flipendo his way, hoping he would thank her for it when he came to.

But then Ming saw fit to interject. Already wavering in her resolve to attack, Liana quickly turned her wand away from her target, the spell veering past him. An immediate regret for doing so gripped her chest, followed by chagrin when Gray seemed to decide he wanted to forfeit. This just made her look mean to everyone watching, since now it looked like she didn't even give poor boy a break, instead using his indecision and confusion to get rid of an opponent. Who was her ally less than a minute ago.

Biting the inside of her lip nervously, she redirected her gaze to the remaining two opponents. Maggie had gotten her first success, however small it was - Avery was more or less up in the air, lacking balance. He certainly didn't seem hurt, however, and the fall from those few inches above the ground wouldn't damage him at all. The redhead clutched her wand, uncertain as to what she should do now. The two jocks were still very much involved in their own duel, and she didn't want either of them getting frustrated because she attacked before their differences could be resolved. She wished she could forfeit, like Matthew; however, a duel was to be left victorious or unconscious, that's how she was taught. Stepping down because one felt uncomfortable wasn't an option.
