Classes were done for the day, leading into the weekend with zero tests to worry over and no homework. The day was overcast, a chilled breeze in the air and just perfect to make you feel cozy in one's scarfs and winter robes and so far, everyone and their mother seemed to be in a good or at least decent mood; which in Hogwarts meant no hexes or fires to be put out.

It’d been so good in fact Elsian had even been able to lightly doze off in his final class of the day! Although it might've been in part thanks to being behind other students. But all in all? It was looking to be a pretty good day.

Granted it was because of that little power nap the Gryffindor was a bit drowsy now, forced to get up and caught in the rush to get out of classes as he'd been less he tempt fate with his professor. Just the idea of making his way up all those stairs to the common room had made him want to flop on the floor in the middle of the halls but he’d also had nowhere exactly to be until tomorrow; the courtyard, with its now dwindling foot traffic and wonderful openness had been the answer to all his problems. That is to say, the ‘bench’, which was really just the edge of the courtyards big old fountain, had been perfect to finish his cut off nap.

With his bag and scarf as his pillow and trusty winter cloak to fend off the chills bite, nothing could stop him! Except maybe a larger group if they asked, he wasn't that greedy, but that hadn't happened during his 30 minutes of beauty sleep luckily enough. Rather the sleep had made him feel more ready to make the trek back to his dorm, to drop off the books weighing him down and maybe into something comfier than his school uniform before pestering Sage.

He’d just barely gotten up, one leg thrown over the ‘bench’ to halfway straddle the thing with the other slightly tucked under him while he was fiddling with the buttons to tighten his cloak at his neck. Still a bit tired, everything on the edge of muzzy with the lingering grogginess dragging at the edges of his limbs so even as he dragged his bag into his arms to stuff the stupidly long scarf away it wasn't really surprising that someone could just sneak up behind him without his notice. Especially in a place like this, where a few other students loitered and walked to and from the halls.

Willow was feeling particularly good this chilly Friday at Hogwarts. November was always a month when she felt refreshed. Samhain was the Wiccan witches' New Years so for her, she was a month into a brand new year of opportunity. This was always a time of reflection and setting intentions for the next year to come. The young badger had been spreading herself just a tad thing at this point. She was a prefect, and duelling co-captain, and a writer for the Headliner at school. Not to mention being a whole student that had to keep up her grades. It kept her busy though, and for that she couldn't be too mad.

With all of the awful things that continuously happened at Hogwarts she needed the distraction, the pull away from her own thoughts. Too much time to linger in her own brain meant too much time to worry and panic. Keeping her composure mattered even more now that she was one of the four prefects that had to maintain calm while the rest of the house devolved into utter chaos at any given moment.

For now, she was taking a walk in the courtyard in her warm Hogwarts uniform that protected her from the Scotland cold. It didn't help her face though that was being cut by the brisk air. The sniffles were rampant, but she wouldn't trade it for anything else. The cold air felt healing, cleansing of mind and soul. It was getting to the point where she needed to head back inside and set herself in front of the warm Hufflepuff fire.

She had turned to head back inside when she saw a familiar mop of black messy hair post-nap, of course, and her heart alighted. He had sent her pumpkin cream puffs in October just before Halloween but she hadn't seen him in person in forever. In such a large castle it was easy to lose track of friends. Willow, quite literally, bounced on up to him and put her hands over his eyes. "Guess who~" An easy question, especially since she made no move to mask her voice.

He jumped, a bit startled by the hands suddenly blocking off his sight and it had the Gryffindor automatically reaching up to cup the others hands to pull them away. Without his grip his bag was left to gently sag onto the ground, the quiet dull thump of something falling out but he found he didn't mind all that much when his mystery person spoke up.

Any surprise or whatever little annoyance he might've had at the thought of his stuff falling melted away into a fond if slightly dry amusement and his grip was left falling away with a small huff of laughter. Elsi knew that voice; and jeez, when was the last time they’d actually seen each other, maybe a brief glance in the halls? It felt like ages. They had to do better. Maybe he could try harder to catch the other when she wasn't busy or try going to duels and events.

It made him want to yawn just thinking about it; oh, the things you did for friends.

Oh! Hmm, fuck who could this be?” He drawled.

Figuring he’d play it up a bit he hummed as if he really had to think before reaching up to tap and grab at the other girl's hands. Likened to that of a detective, a poor one granted but still a detective he huffed out a small ‘aha’, a signal to the great reveal of his ‘sleuthing’.

Well since there’s no gloves, no ring pops or plastic spiders on this hand it must be...Sage!

With her hands over Elsian's eyes, she really reflected on how it was now the season to wear gloves. Her hands had been warm inside of her cloak pockets, but now being exposed to the frosty air they were quickly chilling. Hopefully he would end the game quickly, mostly for her to go back to being warm.

Her eyebrows scrunched together when he listed off the items he used to deduce who it was. "I do love ring pops. But the gloves are mostly a mistake on my part. I forgot." She went through her mental rolodex to think if she knew anyone by that name. "Does a Sage go to this school? I don't even know a Sage. So, wrong answer~ Try again. Or else you'll be stuck to this fountain... forever!" She tried to make her voice sound menacing, but it had the same effect of a tiny dog growling. Which was to say: it was not really effective.

Willow had never been a very threatening person, the only time where she thought she achieved that was on the duelling piste. There she was confident and competent. She knew that it was something that she was good at, something that she excelled at. In her last one against Slytherin amidst mockery and rude words passed between friends, she could barely keep her wand in her hand. She had been blindfolded. They were scared of her. Scared of her ability as a dueller. At least, that's what she told herself. But here? With a friend? Threatening was probably the furthest thing from what she was.

You wouldn't!” He gasped dramatically, as if the threat were life or death. In a way it was. “I’m too pretty to get frostbite.

Unless she was petty enough of course, something he wasn't exactly thrilled to find out. If it came down to pressing this ruse there may be no end, as petty and stubborn he was sure he’d become in a game of wills with the other. Still, he couldn't help but poke fun at the girl a bit more.

Hands plopped in his lap he shrugged the movement threatening to dislodge her hands, “well if you’re forgetful, love ring pops, and are happy to threaten me like this so casually I think I can safely claim you’re a Hufflepuff, not a Gryffindor. My mistake, should have known better.

After all,” he placed a hand over his heart, “Sage would never threaten me like this.” She would push him into snow, all classy like. Creature of action she was.

Still, threats or not he could feel the hands over his eyes starting to chill from the cold and he brought his hands up to latch on instinctively, whether or not to drag her hands away or fend off the cold he wasn't sure. It was probably a sign for the gag to end...It was fun while it lasted! But Elsi was quite ready to turn in for a warm drink. Thank you very much!

Obviously it’s-” Ah.

A shiver ran up his spine, sharp and icy as his mind blanked badly. He knew who she was, he really knew who she was! She was huffpuff! Creampuff Queen! And yet- why couldn't say her name?! He knew he’d paused too long, the silence seemed to drag on between them as he suddenly floundered to think, to grasp at the name on the tip of his tongue when the only thing that wanted to come out were silly nicknames and loving insults. He’d messed up, and now it was too late to backtrack and settle on a nickname without it being obvious or odd; somehow the small pit of mortified dread building in his throat was enough to keep his hands lightly holding on rather than flopping about uselessly in a dramatic panic.

Stubbornly he kept his mouth shut tight. Perhaps it was pride that kept him from simply admitting the silly mind blank and laughing it off.

Ah,” he said like an intellectual, “what was the question again.

Nailed it

Willow scrunched up her nose at his comment about being too pretty to get frostbite. "Yeah yeah, your precious nose would end up falling off and surely we can't have that." One of her pointed fingers split from the handmade blindfold and booped him on the nose for good measure. Truthfully, she was starting to get really cold. She was heading this way to head into warmth again. The ever raging Hufflepuff fire was calling out to her, but she had to see this to the end.

"I feel like you've met a very limited amount of Hufflepuffs. That is a uh... interesting... assessment of us. But you are correct!" Finally, she would be heading inside soon. His hands came up to rest on hers, at first her hands tightened before realizing he wasn't actively pulling them off. Instead, she let them warmth of his hands start to seep into hers. She instinctively started rocking back and forth on her heels, trying to keep her body moving to create warmth.

Her heart practically leapt out of her chest when it seemed like the final guess was coming but then he- stopped. "Elsi, come on. You know who it is and it's collllllld." Her voice stretched out into a whine. In an attempt to steal more heat from the tired boy, her head rested on top of his. A warm nest within fluffy black hair.

Something between a groan and a growl, a groawl one could say, came out when he asked for the question again. "I-" The girl paused, truly not being able to tell if he couldn't remember her name or not. "Elsi... did you forget my name?" Though he couldn't see it, her eyebrows were pushed together in suspicion as she gazed down at him. Though, she couldn't see much except since there was a giant hand blockade in front of his face.

Elsian hissed at the cold finger brushing against his nose huffily. It wasn't his fault that most Hufflepuffs were too crazy to be worth getting to know over his naps and sewing. His handful of friends were enough thanks.

If I know who it is then unhand me.” He grumbled, though it held no heat even as he started to shuffle and squirm in his seat. A vindictive part of him wanted to complain about the sudden weight on his head, after all it was hardly fair she got to hide her face from the cold while his hands chilled atop hers but he accepted the fact that he clearly had the better part of this deal when a rather sharp wind bit past them. The other shielding the brunt of it for him.

Of course not!” He denied vehemently.

How could you even think I’d forget my favorite badger? This is an outrage. Slander,” he pushed dramatically.

I know it’s you Huffpuff, there’s only one Creampuff in all of Hogwarts.” And that at least, was very much the truth. For all it was worth the knowledge he could pin down the voice even among hundreds. He hoped she couldn't feel the way his face had gone ashy, then burned with the horror of it all.

Plucking lightly at the girl's fingers he made to stand, “In fact, I never! I ought to cry, I'm so insulted!” He was a filthy liar. “But it is pretty cold, so I guess I can let the insult slide.

Shifting to stand up he added, “How about hot chocolate and cookies? I got the best- Guh!” he squawked and flailed inelegantly, surprised when the others grips didn't let up. He was forced back onto the cold stoop or face blindly falling.

Creampuuuff!” he whined.

Willow had seen plenty of Disney movies to know how to do a menacing laugh, and she really did her best. "Oh I would my precious Elsi, you'll become the prettiest statue of them all in the Courtyard!" To be honest, Elsi might like an eternity where he could sleep and not do anything as stone. But part of her hoped that he would maybe miss her while he was a pretty statue.

"Hey! Hufflepuffs are sugar and spice and everything nice. You're the one dragging this out by not answering the question. I guess there's a reason you didn't get into Ravenclaw." Every day Willow was grateful that she didn't have to enter a riddle to get to her common room. Crawling through a barrel wasn't exactly glamorous, but it didn't require any brains late at night or during finals where she didn't have as much brain power. "Besides- I think I have a little Gryffindor in me with how brave I am keeping my hands out in the cold like this." Brave or reckless, she wasn't sure. But she sure was going for it.

The warmth from his hands almost made her want to give up and head back inside to warm up and laugh this all off. But she was as stubborn as a bull, something that she got from her dad. She almost released a sigh of relief as it seemed like he was ready to have the goof end- until... he didn't. Behind him, Willow's eyes narrowed. Did he forget her name? In a moment of desperation and brutal quizzing did her namesake escape him? It felt like the silence dragged on for hours even though she knew it was probably only a couple minutes. When he finally failed, she pulled her hands off of his eyes and jumped in front of him, eyebrows knitted together and hands on her hips.

"Elsian Cox- did you forget my name?" Of course it was a feigned anger, she could never really be mad at him. But she was going to try and make him feel as bad as possible about this. Her lip quivered, her eyes softened. "I can't believe... that you would forget."

Those words were way more menacing than they had any right to be.

So, this was it. This is how he perished, freezing to death to become the prettiest statue in all the land. He’d had a good life, at least he’d go out being the prettiest. But wow-

Wow, wow, wow; rude! So rude! Why he never; except she was totally right in this scenario. But that wasn't the point! The point was she was supposed to judge him silently, politely, and all the while behind his back like any respectable person. “That is not only a blatant lie but also an outrage,” he said, tone one of dramatic outrage.

But such hysterics would not hold up in the wake of the creampuffs scrutiny.

Oh no, she was breaking out the last name. It was never a good sign when anyone did that.

Oh but on the bright side he could see again! On the not so bright side he was faced with the crippling sight of one creampuff's disappointment, topped with the shame of a quivering lip and painfully soft eyes that made him feel very, very bad about causing. He had to fix this…

Time to lie.

He stood up, shaking his head likely a tad too frantically and eyes a bit too wide to come off as anything even close to sincere. She was totally right after all and obviously on to his bullcrap; the Gryffindor had totally, without a doubt, forgotten her name in the wake of this god-awful interrogation. Perhaps he could plead amnesia and ‘recover’ in a few hours when he remembered Willow's name? Wait-

WILLOW! It was Willow- actually no. That didn't sound right either.

Annnd he was totally losing her. Okay, it was all or nothing. Time to face the music and just go for it.

Channeling all the fake confidence and ill gotten lying skills the boy had Elsian carefully reached out to try and sooth the other, hands going to her shoulders as he shook his head with a winced look of apology. “No, no, I was kidding. It was just a stupid joke creampuff.

It was a type of tree. It was a type of tree. It was a type of tree.

He pulled her in for a hug, “I would never forget your name…Birch.

…Nope, that wasn’t it. Abort.

I mean Oak! No-!” A long pause; the boy squinting over her shoulder in thought as his brain flatlined in his time of need. “...Tree

Nailed it-
