Battle of Wits Duel Four Unofficial Duel Closed

Juniper felt, at this moment, as if she got this in the bag. Sure, she didn't know a WHOLE TON of spells, but she DID know the ones that could keep her standing. At least, she certainly hoped so. For one, this was an unofficial event, so she felt like she didn't need to worry too much about it. It was like a practice duel since Juniper wanted to join the Ravenclaw dueling team. She had thought about quidditch, but the thought of throwing spells at another person seemed fun. Of course, so did hitting bludgers at people, but maybe next year.

She walked into the dueling area with her wand in her hand, running the spells she knew through her head. If she was blindfolded, she didn't know a spell for that. Just try and pull it off, that's all she knew. She wasn't sure if incendio was allowed, but she remembered what Samantha told her. Just stop drop and roll. Or stay on fire and continue casting spells.

She bounced on her toes, shaking out the nervousness. She was super excited. She glanced at the girl who would be on her team and smiled. "We got this!"

Serena was not necessarily a fighter - or rather a duellist. However, after everything that had happened over the years - especially the things happening recently, she figured getting a little bit of extra practice was never a bad idea. It was just the wise thing to do after a while. Of course, this was very different to a fight. They were not here to kill, they were here to have a bit of fun. But there was no reason they could not practice a little bit of spellcasting, aiming spells and dodging incoming spells whilst they were at it.

When she heard her name, she got up and made her way towards the stage. Looking at her partner, she smiled, "Hey, I'm Serena!" She introduced herself as she nodded to the girl's enthusiasm, "Yeah we do!" She agreed as she pulled her wand out and took her position near Juniper.

She adjusted her clothes a little, preparing herself for the duel. Then she would wait to salute them, preparing to start the duel. She stared at her opponents, she was not particularly familiar with them - nor was she very familiar with her partner, who she had seen around a bit but not really spoken to. It was probably better for strategising to know things about your team and your opponents. Unfortunately, Serena was really not in the position to do so. Either way, she could just do her best. When they were allowed, Serena instantly sprung into action.

Illowy wasn't entirely sure what possesses her to sign up for an unofficial duel; perhaps just was a way of seeing who all might be eventually joining teams in the future, or maybe just to keep her skills up outside out working with her own team and against familiar opponents. After all, it wasn't like she was expecting much outside of an opportunity to duel more. What she certainly hadn't expected though was being matched with a first year, and up against a fifth year.

Any nerves outside of her usual anxiousness to get started, were masked but her usual cold look as her wand twirled effortlessly though her fingers, sizing up her opponents and trying to gauge some idea of how this was about to go down. She was competitive, even if this was just for fun, it was still a duel; and the point was to hurt your opponent. Unlike dueling against official teams, Illowy didn't have the advantage of seeing what these two were like in a duel.

As the teams took their places on the platform, the twirling of her wand ceased. Pale eyes flicked to her assigned partner. If the look was cold, it wasn't intentional. Illowy never had been the type to give off a terribly warm or friendly demeanor. The young cub wasn't exactly impressive at first sight, but she was still only a first year, and first years held the most potential, "Just stay on yer feet, and you'll be fine. Aye?" she spoke quietly to her partner, tone about as warm as her gaze. She get gave a small nod towards their opponents, "Give a little bow to them. Its proper." she then advised, turning her attention back to the other pair, returning Towers' salute with a bow of her head before taking position.

Della felt more confident walking into the duelling club for the second time. First, this duel seemed inherently fairer. Ming's King of the Hill, while educational and spirit building, had turned into a match of Slytherins versus Della. This time Della had a partner, and they were facing only two other duellists. Second, it was no longer her first duel. She knew a little what to expect. But this time, it wasn't only first-years, which means Della should expect to see some more advanced spellwork.

She glanced at her partner, Illowy. The older Slytherin was stern-looking, but she seemed open to helping Della out. In fact, Della felt confident that she had such a seasoned partner. They had a quick conversation about strategy before the duel had started, and Della was amazed by how comprehensive Illowy's assessment was of their rivals. She followed the older girl's lead and bowed to her opponents.

Della scanned Serena and Juniper. Juniper was a first-year, too, and Della knew her from the frog choir. Juniper was boisterous and fun, so Della didn't expect any hard feelings between the both of them after this was all over. Serena was also a member of the frog choir, but she was the oldest of the dueling quartet, and Della was somewhat intimidated facing her here.

Rose watched as spells flew, the dazzling light of watching a duel instead of participating in it. It was cool to watch a duel and oversee it instead of participate in it.

All four of the girls on stage were able to dodge the spells coming at them, which Rose found interesting. All of them had dodged out of the way. Rose couldn't make out all of the spells, but two of them looked like the Dancing Feet Spell maybe? Rose nodded. This was going well. Nothing too drastic yet.

It was a little disappointing that their aim wasn't quite true. Not that Rose wanted anybody to get hurt, of course. It would just be much more interesting if somebody giggled or danced or was jelly-like or something. That was the joy of dueling. Rose wanted to see some drama, some humanity! She hoped that they were able to land some spells in the future and they didn't just miss and dodge well forever. Then they would just be dodging forever and ever and nothing interesting would happen.

This was a sport, after all. She wanted to see some sportsmanship. A good, clean duel. She really hoped this would end up going really well. She was here to oversee this duel.

In a formal duel, a moment like this would feel like testing the waters. A moment to truly size up their opponent and gauge their capability. In a formal duel, Illowy's level of concentration might've been a little more understandable. She imagined that to the other girl's, this was for fun. After all, wasn't that the point? Try out dueling without having to commit to a team, seeing how well you liked it before you decided if this was something you truly wanted to be apart of; but not to her. Especially being up against an older peer. It was more along the lines of target practice, with added interest.

Just as well, she didn't want to face her Team Captain with nothing but a miserable defeat in tow. She had a healthy level of fear respect for her Captain and the time gone into drilling training them to be the best they could be. Slytherin was defending champions, and you're only as strong as your weakest player.

With a level of grace, Illowy managed to evade Towers' jinx, as did the older girl manage to avoid her own cast. The snake passed a quick glace to her partner, glad to see she was still on her feet and unscathed. Surely this would prove to be an interesting experience.

Della felt well practiced at this point at evading. Well, she had only been in on duel before this, but she had evaded a lot of spells to last as long as she did. She hoped could repeat that luck today.

At the same moment that she had sent Dancing Feet at Juniper, Juniper responded with the same spell. Copying each other once again, they both successfully evaded the spell. Della was glad she was able to jump out of the way cleanly—having your limbs uncontrollably move and flop around felt uncanny.

The two older girls aimed for each other. Two spells Della didn't recognize flashed between them. Just like her and Juniper, the Slytherin and Hufflepuff effectively evaded each other's spells.

So everyone was evenly matched.

Della thought back to her and Illowy's strategy. She decided what she should do next based on her partner's instructions. She eyed Juniper and Serena, wondering if their strategy mirrored hers and her partner's. It would be a long match if they kept thinking along the same lines.

Della steadied her wand, took a few deep breaths, planted her feet, and prepared for her opponents' next moves.

This time, Serena and Juniper, in contrast to their earlier jumping on casting spells, didn't cast one at all. Rose wasn't sure why, but she hoped they were okay. Maybe it was part of their strategy?

Illowy and Della both sent spells towards Serena this time, maybe targeting her because she could do more damage to the both of them. Rose recognized one as the Second Fire Making Spell. She grinned, but then stopped herself. Though fire did make the duel more interesting, maybe getting excited wasn't the first thing she was supposed to do. Serena was able to excellently dodge the Fire-Making Spell. Though Rose couldn't recognize the spell, Della's aim wasn't very spot-on, and Serena was able to dodge that one as well.

So they were teaming up on her, huh? It was a good strategy, but Rose would have expected them to go for Juniper, as she was the first year and would be easier to hit. Maybe they were expert strategists, Rose thought. She wouldn't be surprised if their strategy was just way out of her ballpark of thinking.

Rose kept her eyes trained on the duelists, ready for their next moves. She cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted, "You can do it, guys! Get your heads in the game!"
