2021, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw: Match 5

Round Four

The next round largely went off with nary a bang. Aside from Robert Toukmond successfully locating his wand a few feet to his left, nothing else of note seemed to have happened in the few heartbeats that it took for the duelists to cast at each other once more.

The two Gryffindors, having both of their wands in hand unlike the Ravens, both decided to cast spells at the same person: Mars; a Lubricus and an Incendio Duo from the sound of it.

Sylvie O'Niell's spell succeeded in turning the floor where her target stood impossibly slick and slippery. Unfortunately for her, Mars' only movement was to cast an answering Flame spell back at Elsa's failed one, rendering the treacherous floor entirely useless. Though successful, however, the Ravenclaw duelist's spell flew pretty far from its intended location.

Rubbing a hand over his face, Dmitri groaned.

Why do I always get the slow duels?

It was as if the universe made up for his own quick rounds by sticking him in duels that took too long.

"You all can do better. Please show us exactly why you four were chosen to be in your team." The Slytherin would give each one an almost-pleading stare. "Or if not, at least fail so badly for our entertainment. Anything is better than this."

Tch. Mars gritted their teeth as they watched their spell fly harmlessly past the Lioness across from them. Win one, lose one really. At the very least, she hadn't succeeded in doing anything this round.

They made to take a step back, but just as they put their foot down, the ground seemed to slip under them. What the hell...? Mars looked up at the other Gryffindor. Must've been her then.

At least Robert had found his wand. They called over to him, giving their wand a bit of a twirl as they did it. Hm, it'd been a while.

"Hold onto that this time, Toukmond!" they turned their eyes back to the girls ahead. Time to fry some lions.

Although Robert most definitely did not know the term, he suffers from a severe case of FOMO. It was normal for duelers to be reluctant to take their eyes off the match so as to avoid serious injuries, but this added another layer to the situation for Robert. Because of this, Sylvie's spell had hurt on a level much deeper than just the back pain caused from bending over. Eyes flickering between the events in front of him and the ground around him, he spotted his wand not too far away without much difficulty. And thankfully, it didn't seem like he missed much, with three spells flying through the air, and not a single effect for either side.

"Ah, that's good advice!" he replied to his partner's comment with a joking look of newfound understanding, as well as a small laugh. "Thanks, Mars!"

That wasn't very cash money of the Slytherin boy to say, Sylvie would think to herself. Perhaps all of them were a tad off their game, but at the very least both teams were trying! She turned her head and sneezed out something terrible in their poor moderators direction. "WE- A...ACHOOOO--" A sniffle... "We're trying our BEST, snake boy!" With a huff, she turned back to the duel. 


No matter in the end, however. With a final sneeze and a wipe of snot from her nose, she turned back to the duel.

Round Five

Having just recovered his wand, Robert Toukmond immediately proved he was capable of holding onto it long enough to cast a spell, by deftly hitting Elsa squarely in the shoulder with a Knockback Jinx.

Beside him, Mars cast their own attack. From the looks of it, it had the potential to have been quite the formidable Fire-Making Spell. However, with an almost inhuman maneuver, the Gryffindor second year managed to slide just past the trajectory of the flames.

Elsa tried to answer that by sending the same spell back at them but—probably due to her focus on dodging—managed to only conjure up a shower of sparks from her wand. Her ally suffered a similar fate. What seemed to be an attempt at a curse flew slowly at Robert, giving him ample time to sidestep the spell.

The river of snot streaming down Sylvie's face seemed to be taking its toll.

Overall, the volley of attacks (and fails) put both teams on equal footing—each side having been able to damage the other by a respectable amount. Only the next rounds would dictate which would reign supreme; it simply was too early to tell.

Robert smiled with satisfaction. There was nothing comparable to the feeling of your spell hitting its target, especially immediately after recovering your wand. The fact that he seemed to be the only person to do so this round made it feel even better. Obviously it would have been better for his partner to have done so as well, but there was a certain personal morale boost that came with succeeding where all others fail. Of course, he would never admit this to anyone, including himself.

Sylvie was not feeling well. It felt like when she was a kid and got the flu for the first time. The bogies were a different breed, however. No amount of Mucinex could withstand the torrent of nasty leaking from her poor face, and that made the little Gryffindor soooooo mad.

Still there was a job to do, so with an extremely grumpy face she gripped her wand tightly and gave a firm nod to her partner. Hopefully something would turn in their favor.

"Oh hell yeah!" Mars exclaimed, watching the stunning blue light arc perfectly into their opponents shoulder, "That's how you do it, Robert!"

Perhaps they were a bit too caught up with their partner's success though, because their own spell flew wide, sparking harmlessly again the piste behind the Gryffindors. They winced, twirling their wand back up into resting position.

This was getting fun again. The flow of the duel had wormed itself back into their bones, the hints of adrenaline poking at the edge of their vision. Mars looked down at their trusty cherry wand, swiping a thumb over the smooth wood.

Different teammate, different duel, different day... But somehow still the same. Now, if they could just get one....
