Hello, Lonely Mouse
"The Prince of Darkness is a gntleman." - William Shakespeare
▁ ▂ ▄ ▅ ▆ ▇ █ ||~♟~|| ▇ ▆ ▅ ▄ ▂ ▁
Selim knew of one Jake Morris.
Not much, of course (well not much that he trusted), but the Blossom Ball of 2020 had been such a disaster that it would be more surprising if there weren't whispers about everyone included in it coiled down the grapevine. If the rumours of him murdering Victor Moore from the very obscure 'Fight Club' event of Slytherin had gotten out, then anything happening at Blossom Balls was probably pounced on by the gossipers even more, like vultures to a carcass.
But what was said about the Hufflepuff was enough, enough to get him curious. Perhaps Selim would've forgotten all about Jake Morris had the recent Blossom Ball had not reminded him. He had seen the boy that night, it had niggled his memory as he watched the Hufflepuff swiftly disappear into the crowd of students. He had ignored it then, for the head been bigger things to worry about, but afterwards, while he had mulled over everything he had seen, he had recalled the small boy.
Curiosity had inevitably taken over, and he did some digging. Vague bits and pieces of info here, musings about their personalities there. It had been enough for him to bite at the bait dangled before him.
As a result, he began doing what he did best... observing, lurking, figuring out patterns. It all led up to this day, the day he'd step closer to the curious lightworlder, and indulge in his curiosity. A dangerous move, he knew, for the boy had many connections to other lightworlders... dangerous ones, like the briars as Kaegen had called them.
He'd tread carefully. He knew he was always oddly intimidating to some, despite his stature, perhaps it was his eyes? Piercing yellow hues always looked like they were seeing into one's soul, blood-red ones always gave off feelings of danger. He should've taken that into consideration, perhaps, and instead put in his blue contact lenses for this meeting rather than his usual pale yellow ones.
Maybe his rabbit mask would hide it enough so he wouldn't look intimidating...
He was really trying not to seem scary, but he didn't really know how not to. He had forgotten most of his etiquette training while wasting away in the dungeons, all his attempts to smile felt off, fake, like a mannequin. His sallow face no longer held the innocent baby fat of a 12-year-old, eaten away by lack of nutrition, exhaustion, and stress. His eyes were surrounded by dark rings of bruising from lack of sleep, sunk into their sockets giving him sharp features. Lips chapped and face scarred... he'd always look frighting, really.
That's another reason why he kept his rabbit mask on, white with pink skin like a bunny, eyes red like an albino hare. Sure, it gave off a slightly haunting look, but even that was better than his actual face.
The mask would help him keep the monster in check too, now wasn't the time for violent, bloodthirsty urges, now was a time to talk... like a normal human.
Aku laughed harshly at the thought, tone mocking. The ventriloquism used to make him speak was partially unnecessary because no one could see Selim's mouth move, but he did still need to use its skill to throw the puppet's voice.
"'Normal human'? Face it, Selim, you'll never be a 'normal human'. You're practically an eldritch horror and it's hard for eldritch horrors to act 'normal'. No, it's basically impossible." The purple bunny hand puppet scoffed, and Selim frowned slightly behind his mask.
They were walking down the hall, toward the library where Selim knew the Hufflepuff resided. Footsteps neigh soundless, he tried to ignore the sneer in Aku's voice, a now-full set of bone-carved teeth glistening in the puppet's once-empty, black maw. He had a proper smile now, and it looked about as friendly as a crocodile's grin. The grin never left either, for Aku didn't have lips. The teeth had consistency though, all small so the mouth didn't look excessively propped open.. well, there were the feline-like canines breaking the consistency... Selim had thought it prudent to add them because it'd add more damage to the bite of the doll.
"I don't expect to be perfect." The second-year's soft tone commented. It was blank, quiet, level. "I'm not nieve in the slightest, Akuryō, you should know this."
The puppet snorted, "'That doesn't mean you aren't idiotic, boy. Idiocy doesn't equal naivety."
Selim was about to speak in protest until the third voice spoke up within his mind. "Both of you need to silence yourselves or do you want to walk in on the boy talking like a raving madman?" Their tone was cold as if they were observing everything while sipping tea in Selim's mind space, unimpressed by the 'show' they were watching.
The Slytherin huffed, falling silent as he turned down another hall, pausing upon seeing the door to the library at the end of the corridor. Aku listened to Ronri as well, which was always surprising, he wondered when the imp would decide that he didn't want to listen to either of them anymore.
Casting the troubling thought away, along with the memory of the control Aku actually had over his worst nightmares, the boy focused on the task at hand. There were barely any other students around, and the few that walked past didn't seem to notice, or perhaps just didn't care, about the rabbit-masked boy lurking in the shadows.
It was drawing close to the early curfew that Selim never listened to despite the warnings of the professors. So most were heading to their dorms, Selim would have to act quick, and would have to keep the Hufflepuff engaged enough to remain put of his own free will.
Walking toward the library, he slipped in, swiftly ducking into the rows of shelves, and slithering through the maze of books. He came across the study area soon enough and waited for a lingering student to pack up and leave.
The lazy light of the sunset through the windows was filtered by dust motes, casting everything in both warm light, and dark shadows. Selim remained in the latter, of course, though wasn't as stealthy as he had been during the Blossom Ball. He was not wearing his cloak, the floors above the dungeons were far too warm for that thanks to the rising heat of the summer. So instead the boy defaulted to his usual long-sleeved white T-shirt and baggy grey sweatpants. Bandages wrapped around the soles of his bare feet were good enough for him.
His pale skin was only further washed out by the shirt, but the few scars coiling up his neck in knots could still be seen, discoloration of the scar tissue clear.
Shaggy black hair uncombed, the only defining feature of the boy was his puppet and his mask.
He watched the extra student leave, waiting a few moments afterwards, trying to muster up the courage to actually talk. His gaze drifted toward the small boy, and he took a deep breath, before stepping out of the shadows and finally speaking.
"Hello... lonely mouse." The first words that came to his mind were odd ones, that made him pause in mild confusion. His hazy mind didn't offer up any reason for them, of course, because it was useless. He cleared his throat before continuing, soft voice clear despite its low volume. "You are... Jake Morris... right?" He paused, did that sound too blunt? Too commanding? Should he have offered the apple cider first?
Selim shuffled his feet, mask's snout angled to the floor. How had he fallen so far in his conversation skills?
"What did you expect after avoiding any human interaction for four and half months?" Ronri's voice drawled from within his mind, unheard by anyone other than him and Aku. The puppet in question laughed at it all, stubby paw rising to his fanged mouth in a cartoonish snicker.
The second-year frowned again, spidery fingers clenching in a flash of annoyance. He loosened them once more though, they were left twitching at his side "Ah... I wanted to... talk." He paused, where had the opening speech he had planned gone? Voice still deadpan through the whole awkward, one-sided conversation, he tacked on something else. "I have some... warm apple cider?"
Not alcohol, of course, it was the sort of stuff you got for the Christmas season.
He mused on how to continue, hazy mind blank as his mask, then sighed. "I had a dramatic speech planned... but now I've forgotten it." Whenever in doubt, be blunt. He rubbed the bridge of his mask's muzzle, trying to dredge the memory up, but nothing came of it.
Bluntness was a great tool sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes. Maybe this was one of those times?
He swore he heard Ronri sigh in exasperation.... and Aku was laughing again. Tartly, Selim tried to clamp the rabbit's mouth shut, but the cursed hellspawn abruptly bit him for his troubles. His sharp fangs snapped around one of his fingers like a snake striking prey.
(His own hand was controlling the puppet, how exactly did this happen-?)
Swearing Selim pulled his now-slightly injured finger away, shaking it and then examining the wound... it was bleeding.
The Slytherin hissed. Voice filled with venom.
"You little bugger, why I ought to -" Abruptly he paused in his death threat and looked up to the boy.
He had an audience... right...
Muttering he shoved the sudden burst of rage back down into its cage. Clearing his throat as if that mere action would erase the disruptive scene his hand puppet had caused, he stood upright again, posture slouched slightly. Aku's face was shoved against Selim's shirt in an attempt to drown out his wheezing laughter. "... Sorry."
Smooth, very smooth.

Hello, Lonely Mouse
@Selim Faust
The library had always been a sanctuary to Jake...He had found that bullies rarely seemed to come there. It was quiet. There were lots of books to read. And the librarians were always nice.
When he wasn't in Hufflepuff common room, and he wasn't with his friends, it was one of his favorite places to be at Hogwarts. Definitely the best inside place.
It wasn't usual that anybody spoke to him, and even less usually was it a stranger. That was until today...
"Hm?" the small boy mumbled, hearing a voice address him. Jake looked up from where he'd been reading a story that he'd found about hippogriffs, and saw... "Ah!"
Jake startled, a slight squeak emerging from his lips. He could never have expected the sight that he would be looking at now...The voice had come from a ragged looking kid...at least Jake thought it was a kid. How old he was was impossible to tell, really, because he looked practically part rabbit - his face was covered by a mask.
"Um..h-hello..." Jake stammered, looking up at the other...boy? He sounded like a boy, at least...it was hard to tell with his mask on.
If it was Halloween, Jake might have thought the other's costume was cool...but it WASN'T Halloween...And while Jake had used to ask his mum how come he couldn't just wear his Halloween costume all the time, somehow, when you saw somebody else do it, it looked a lot more creepier than that.
"H-how do you know my name...?" Jake asked softly. It was a silly question...lots of other kids knew his name, since he'd been at the school for close to two years now. But somehow this boy felt like some kind of 'other'...Jake didn't even know if he was FROM school...or whether he'd just walked into the castle.
Jake's eyes drifted from the boy's mask to the boy's puppet...everything felt wrong...but something about that puppet was the most wrong of all.
...Had he ever seen a puppet with teeth before?
Jake felt himself shiver.
"Um...I-I don't think I'm very thirsty," the boy answered hastily, eyes darting around to see if there were any other kids around besides the two of them. But the library seemed close to empty. Jake's dark eyes rose up, widened slightly, unblinking, as he gazed uncertainly upon the other's rabbit mask, unable to hide the flickers of fear.
But while the instincts in his head said that what he should do was walk away and find one of his friends so he wasn't alone, he couldn't take his eye off of the bleeding finger. He wasn't sure how it had happened, it had all been so fast...
"Um...are you ok...?" Jake asked, pointing slowly at the boy's injury.

He observed the boy's reaction. It was most definitely fearful. Selim was aware of how unsettling he was even if he was trying not to be. He walked quietly, so he always surprised people when he approached. He couldn't exactly not walk quietly anymore though, it was basically ingrained in him now. His mask was unintentionally haunting, and in the process of making his slightly creepy puppet into a possible weapon as well, he had made it even more disturbing.
He didn't try to be creepy or fighting, not anymore, but now it was impossible to not be. He looked like a demon at this point and he couldn't very well turn it off.
The rabbit-boy sighed, rubbing the back of his head in an almost sheepish fashion. "Sorry if I startled you, I didn't mean to. I'm not here to hurt you, I'm just... looking for answers to some questions I have." He was going to go with the blunt tactic. He spread his arms as if shrugging, blood dripped from his finger, and he blinked looking over at it then drawing it close again. It'd be sacrilegious if he got his blood on the books. 'face' tilted to the ground he continued. "I'm not very good at this whole 'social interaction' thing..."
He remembered the questions the other boy asked, and looked up again. "Ah, I know your name from other students talking about you. Mostly after the Blossom Ball from last year..." He was basically admitting to eavesdropping, yes, but he couldn't very well learn stuff by actually talking with other students, no. He's known as the creepy kid, if known at all, that is. As he said, social interaction was hardly his strong suit any longer.
"My finger is fine..." He was about to add 'dealt with worse anyways' but decided that would probably just scare the boy now. Shifting he rustled through his trusty satchel, pulling out some bandages that seemed rather often-used. Tearing a strip free from the small roll he wrapped it around the injury in a rather confident fashion, neatly binding it up.
He glanced at the Hufflepuff uncertainly. "Are you going... to run away?" His tone sounded faintly defeated as if he fully expected the answer to be 'yes'. "I won't stop you if you do..." His hands dropped to his side.
Well, at least he could say he tried to have a normal interaction with another human being. He probably should've expected the situation to play out like this, after all, he was in a far different world than this rather innocent-looking Hufflepuff. How could he hope to even stand in his presence without unintentionally scaring them.
A faint memory tugged at him, his hazy mind shifting as snippets of another Hufflepuff he had met flickered in his mind's eye. What was her name... Pillow? No that wasn't a name, Willow-something-or other. She had been the only lightworlder to completely accept his unsettling aura. Then again that had been before his mind had decayed into... this.
Another sigh. How was he supposed to reach his goals like this? He could barely hold a conversation with someone he didn't know. He was never the one to approach someone else, those that knew him well had approached him after all, not the other way around. Jack, Deathmote, Ruka. Though the last on that list now despised him. It was valid, Selim had shown him the depths of his decay and, logically, they had turned away. Especially after the stunt, he pulled with Holmwood.
For some reason Jack was different, perhaps he was just a masochist. The only Reason Deathmote had stood with him (Well, more like 'claimed' him), was because they had rather similar darkness. Distorted worlds, paranoia, foggy pasts.
It made sense, darkness could only accept darkness. A rather depressing truth rooted in the simple concept of solidarity.
He supposed he'd just have to go back to the drawing board after all.

Hello, Lonely Mouse
(Sorry Selim....for how late this post was....I'm trying to work through my threads now and catch up on the people that have been waiting for me, and hopefully post more consistently)
@Selim Faust
Jake didn't know what he had expected the bunny boy to say, but it hadn't been that...Why would anyone wanna ask HIM questions? It wasn't like he ever knew the answers to anything...You would think after almost two years at school he would have caught up on all the things he hadn't learned when he was little, with only his parents for company - a whole world of kid knowledge held away from him - but it still felt like he was still learning something new every day. Including how to interact with others, something he'd gotten a lot better at since the last year but still had a ways to go.
"I'm not very good at social interaction either..." Jake admitted with a blush. They at least had that in common. He wondered if that was why the boy wore a mask...He remembered how much more confident he had felt when he was inside the Hufflepuff badger mascot costume at the Quidditch games, when nobody could see the boy inside. Maybe it was just...something like that...? Maybe it WASN'T because of anything scary....though Jake's eyes drifted back towards the toothy puppet and he just didn't know.
Jake's face showed a different kind of nervousness when he heard that Selim had heard about him because other students had been talking about him. "Um....what did they say...?" Jake dared to ask, though a little bit scared to know. He got made fun of a lot, and while he had a lot of friends in Hufflepuff now, there were others that liked to laugh at him. He hoped whatever this boy heard it wasn't any of the things he got laughed at for...Jake swallowed and waited for the worst.
The other boy began to bandage his hurt finger, giving Jake some relief It was nice to know that he wasn't hurt too much...though having so many bandages maybe meant he was used to being hurt. But maybe it was kind of like Ruka...Jake had never understood how the Gryffindor boy had managed to hurt himself so much and still be ok, but they had just been different in that way and Ruka had never seemed to mind, even though Jake still didn't understand it.
Then the boy looked to Jake, and though Jake couldn't see his face, he could see the way his body slumped in defeat, and the resigned tone in his voice. It was like...like he just knew that Jake was going to run from him. And maybe he saw that Jake had wanted to...but the way he sounded...it was almost...sad?
"I...I don't think so..." Jake said, looking at him. He couldn't hide the uncertainty in his voice. Part of him kind of DID still want to...but there was something about this other boy...it was like he knew that Jake was scared of him, but felt bad about it. Would somebody scary really feel that way? Though Jake's heart still beat a bit quickly, he didn't run. He regarded the other boy and tried to figure out if maybe he was right...if maybe the other boy wasn't a threat after all...maybe just shy and strange...but would that make him that different from Jake?
"Um...you said...you wanted to ask....questions...?" Jake asked, squinting up at the rabbit-faced boy. For now, at least, he would stay and talk.

The boy was still scared of him, but it seemed being blunt worked a bit better, because now he seemed to be willing to hear him out. Apparently, the Hufflepuff wasn't good at social interaction either, Selim supposed Houses really couldn't just hold one kind of person. Lots of Hufflepuffs seemed rather social and kind, though perhaps some just had traits that fit better in the House instead of Ravenclaw, or Gryffindor. Well, Stereotyping was still an issue at Hogwarts, after all, though the Slytherin never really cared about those sorts of things unless he was trying to push someone's buttons... which wasn't common.
The boy asked what they said, and that gave Selim pause. "I... don't remember much, I just remember your name from it... and a few things that are kind of useless without context." He only felt confusion when he tried to look back that far, it was a haze, almost like he didn't exist past the past few months. He did though, he knew he did, because he still dreamt of memories he could never recall when awake, and he knew they were memories.... right?
Exhaustion, it messes with your ability to remember things. It messes with a lot of things, it makes hallucinations, or makes existing hallucinations worse. He couldn't figure out how not to be exhausted though. Sleep, right? He was never able to sleep long though, the Pale Man always woke him up, sometimes the centipede man joined in as well... Selim was scared of sleeping.
Morris seemed to decide to stay, and he asked what it was Selim wanted to ask. The rabbit boy blinked. What was it again... something... something vague... then something that wasn't as vague.
"Just two questions. Have you noticed anything, anyone... abnormal, at Hogwarts?" He paused, then furrowed his brow. Jake Morris didn't have a compromised memory about last year (right?), so perhaps he knew about that man, that man that was at the meeting stating the new curfew. "And... do you remember, last year, when the professors announced the new curfew? I don't remember much of that either, but I remember seeing a man up with the professors as well, he didn't belong there, I was scared of him. I don't remember why though." he tilted his head, the confusion now clear in his voice. "Do you remember if there was an adult back then that wasn't part of Hogwarts staff? I'm half-convinced the man was a figment of my imagination... ah, because times were a bit... rough, back then for me, that is." Best not go into detail bout his descent into madness, after all, he was still technically in it.
Idly he scratched his neck with his free hand, he just wanted some confirmation. It wasn't particularly important now though, the man was no longer in Hogwarts last he checked, it has been a year.
Selim was never really up-to-date about the strange happenings at Hogwarts, he knew a decent chunk of stuff about it though, he supposed, but it still wasn't much, especially with his abrupt breaks from reality interrupting his mental states.
He was lucid currently, for once, but he was never sure when the next snap would happen. He just hopped someone would give him a bit of background on the situation. Though that may be asking too much...
