At Long Last
Despite the early hour and her mother's insistence on arriving well before departure, wizards of all ages crowded Platform 93/4. Those whose hair had long ago grayed stood to the side, watching the bustling crowd go by with faint smiles on their face. Parents shepherded their children around with looks of concerning stress. Most of the wizards lining the station, however, were students. Some wore muggle clothes while others sported their school uniforms - the bright reds, blues, yellows, and greens were hard to miss. Most of the students looked the same to Alexandra: older and much cooler. Still, it didn't take much effort to note the other first-years, most clutching onto their trunks as if they were the only things keeping them grounded. Alexandra couldn't judge them though, for she was doing the exact same thing.
"And boys, please watch out for your sister."
Her mother's voice snapped Alexandra's attention back to her gathered family. The five of them looked like a small unit - all tall, dark-haired, and standing close together among the crowd. While her parents wore their usual muggle attire, they did adorn themselves with their house colors: a yellow scarf for her father and a green one for her mother. Beside them stood Alexandra's two older brothers. Upon their mother's insistence, the three siblings had already changed into their school robes. However, whereas Alexandra's lacked any color, both her brothers beamed in their Gryffindor colors. Alexandra could only hope she would be sorted into Gryffindor. Then she wouldn't feel so alone with her brothers nearby.
"Yeah, yeah," muttered David, the eldest.
Her mother furrowed her brow. "I'm serious." She released a heavy sigh, knowing she could no longer stall her children. "Alright. David, work hard and finish strong. John, keep up the good work." There was a pause as her mother turned to her. "Alex, study hard and start strong. You'll have to write to us immediately once you're sorted. Oh, I love you all so much," she sighed as she pulled them all in for a hug.
Once they were finally released, her dad made his rounds wishing the boys good luck. Despite his best attempts, though, he couldn't hide his tears as he turned to Alexandra.
"I love you so much, Alex. Have fun and work hard. I know you'll do great."
Alexandra's throat clenched a little at the farewell. If there was one person she would miss most, it would be her father. Even she couldn't hold back the tear that escaped from her eye.
Finally, it seemed that there was nothing left to do but board the train. David and John were quick to leave the station and jump on the train, leaving Alexandra in the dust. With a final glance behind and a wave to her parents, Alexandra boarded the train.
Over the years, Alexandra had seen the outside of the train many times while dropping her brothers off. Her favorite viewing spot when she was younger was atop her father's shoulders. Still, no amount of preparation could prepare her for all the emotions she felt once she stepped inside. The numerous compartments of students seemed to taunt her as she searched for a place to stay. Her brothers were nowhere in sight, and Alexandra knew that even if she did find them, she would most certainly not be invited to sit with them.
After walking down the aisle for what felt like hours, Alexandra finally found an empty compartment. She practically threw herself through the door and onto the seat beside the window. Within her robes, she felt for her wand just to make sure she had it with her one last time. Its presence was still new and unfamiliar to her, but already it provided her with a sense of comfort.
Alexandra could feel both excitement and sadness fill her as she waited for the train to depart.

Lizzy stared at the brick wall looming in front of her. She was supposed to run right through it, according to the instructions from the letter she had received. "Lizzy?" came a voice from behind her. She turned around to see her older brother, Ben, standing there with a sad expression on his face. While Lizzy had gotten a letter to go to Hogwarts, Ben had not. The two siblings were incredibly close and now she'd be in one half of London, and he'd be in the other. "I'll miss you," he said. "Don't do anything stupid when I'm not around, and make some friends, okay?" he asked, regaining some of his joking nature. "I'll miss you too, and I will try to make some new friends," Lizzy replied. Ben's eyebrows narrowed, "And? You won't do anything stupid right?" Lizzy grinned evilly, "No promises!" She and her brother had never been ones for tearful goodbyes, so she turned and ran toward the brick wall.
If she hadn't ran, she probably would've chickened out and stopped before hitting the wall. Lizzy disappeared from the side she had been on, and reappeared on the other. She gasped as she took in the train and the people surrounding it. There were so many people. Some wore robes and pointed hats, others wore normal clothes like she was wearing. She loaded her luggage onto the train before stepping on.
Even though there were a lot of people still outside the train, there seemed to be more on the inside. How would she find a compartment on the busy train, she didn't know. Lizzy walked down the aisle peeking in the compartments as she went, trying to find an open one. She didn't necessarily need an empty one, just one with one or two others in it. The train jolted forward and began the journey to Hogwarts. Meanwhile, Lizzy fell forward, but caught herself on the window before hitting the ground. Straightening back up, she saw a compartment with only one other girl in it. The girl looked about the same age as her, so she walked in. Lizzy would try her best to make friends, just as Ben had asked.
"Hi. I'm Lizzy, Lizzy Solace. Do you mind if I sit here?" Lizzy asked hopefully. While she waited for the girl to respond, she felt an overwhelming sense of homesickness. A feeling, she was sure, that would become all too familiar to her for the next few months. If only Ben could've come with her. Then, she would feel less alone and know what to do.

Alex hadn't known she'd been anxiously waiting for someone else to enter her compartment until she felt a weight lift off her shoulders as a girl dressed in muggle clothing appeared, asking to join her. She tried to contain her nervous excitement, but she probably wasn't doing a good job of it.
She sat up straight, a warm smile lighting up her face. "No of course not, come on in! Adrenaline coursed through her veins as she gestured for the girl to join her. Alex was practically beaming at the prospect of meeting her first fellow Hogwarts student. From what she could piece together, the other girl - or Lizzy, as she had introduced herself - seemed to be her age, and surprisingly, her height as well. "I'm Alexandra Shae, but Alex is fine too."
Always one to look out the window and daydream, Alex couldn't resist the urge to turn her gaze to the landscape passing by. It almost felt like a dream. She'd spent years in the car imagining as if she were aboard the Hogwarts Express. Now that she was actually here,/ she could barely believe it. No amount of pestering her brothers to hear their stories could have prepared her for this moment.
Pulling herself away from the window, she turned to look at Lizzy again. "Are you a first-year?" she asked. Alex hoped she was. Maybe then she would feel a little less overwhelmed and alone. It would be nice to get off the train by somebody else's side rather than by herself.

The girl greeted Lizzy warmly, offering Lizzy the seat opposite her. She introduced herself as Alex and smiled happily at Lizzy. Lizzy was a bit taken aback by the warm welcome. Back home, she wouldn't have been greeted so warmly. In fact, she probably would've stumbled over her words and then gotten a weird look from the person she was trying to talk to. The whole debacle would have ended with the other person leaving and never talking to her again. Alex seemed excited for Lizzy's company though, and Lizzy would welcome the cheerfulness. She sat down opposite Alex gratefully.
"Thanks," Lizzy replied with a smile growing on her face. "It's nice to meet you. You're literally the only person I know here so far!" Lizzy revealed. The window showed the landscape changing as they passed. The busy streets of London vanished and were replaced by rolling hills and trees greener than the grass itself. Just then, they passed over a river flowing quickly under them, alive with fish jumping around under the water. The landscape was so beautiful Lizzy watched it for a few moments before noticing that Alex had also turned to watch the world outside.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Lizzy asked, acknowledging the two girls both staring out the window, entranced. Alex turned away and asked if she was a first year. That must mean Alex was a first year too. Lizzy hoped this was the case. She could do with a friend to get her through the next few months and make her stay at Hogwarts more pleasant than it was already surely going to be. Yes, I am. I'm guessing you are too? Lizzy would've crossed her fingers at this point. She desperately wanted a friend going into this new place.

The air that escaped her lungs was a relieved sigh mixed with a laugh. "Yes, yes I am," she breathed, the corners of her lips lifting. "My older brothers are somewhere on this train, but this is my first time on the train, and you're the first person I've actually met." Even if she were to be sorted in Gryffindor, Alex highly doubted she would see much of or interact with her brothers. It was comforting and exciting to know that Alex had met someone all on her own. Perhaps she didn't need them to make her own way at Hogwarts after all?
"So what's your story? she asked, before quickly correcting herself, "If you don't mind sharing, of course - you don't have to if you don't want to. I've just always been curious about other wizards and their lives. It's all really quite interesting when you think about it-"
Alex cut herself off abruptly. Her cheeks flushed with red, and she offered Lizzy a sheepish smile. "Sorry," she chuckled, "Didn't mean to ramble on there."
Depending on her mood and the situation, Alex could be very quiet and almost unapproachable or super bubbly and talkative. It seemed her nerves and excitement had turned her to the latter for the time being. Now I've done it, she thought to herself. She's never going to talk to me again after this train ride. She wished that she could melt into the seat cushion behind her.

Alex was a first year. Thank goodness! If Lizzy did this "friends" thing right, she would have a friend before even arriving to Hogwarts. Alex's brothers were on the train, so that meant they were wizards too. How did that work exactly, Lizzy was curious. She had been wondering why she was going to Hogwarts without Ben ever since she had received her letter. "Do you know how the wizard thing works? I just mean, if you have your brothers here they must be wizards. My brother is older than me and never got a letter, so I was wondering why."
Lizzy hoped Alex knew something about it, maybe it would help ease Lizzy's mind about leaving Ben behind. "I don't mind, no. It's probably not that exciting, I really didn't know I was a witch until I got my letter," Lizzy explained. "I lived in a forest area of London with my parents and brother. My parents gave my brother and I a lot of freedom. They thought we needed to learn and figure things out for ourselves. We got into a lot of trouble that way." Lizzy laughed a bit, remembering the mischief they had caused together. "Oh, it's fine. I ramble on a lot! Anyways, that's pretty much my life before I got my letter. What about you?"
Lizzy thought Alex must come from an all wizarding family the way she acted so comfortable with being a wizard. Lizzy knew she herself was a mess right now. Maybe that was why Alex's brothers were wizards too. Although, if one child was a wizard, wouldn't they both be? Lizzy could tell she had a lot to learn about this new life. She just hoped she would have a friend to help her.

Her brows furrowed in thought as she considered Lizzy's questions. "Well, everyone in my family is a wizard, but we do live in London among muggles. One of my brother's friends is muggle-born actually. His parents don't have magic and neither do his older siblings, but he does. I don't know how it happens, but I guess it just does," she shrugged, wishing she could give a bit of a clearer answer.
"I've been surrounded by magic my whole life, but this is the first time I'm actually going off and doing something on my own." She offered Lizzy an encouraging smile. "Maybe we can help each other out? And I'm sure by the time we go home for the holidays, you and your brother will have amazing stories to tell each other."
Alex had her fair share of muggle friends, having spent all her life with them up until then. It had hurt saying goodbye to them. They thought she was on her way to some private boarding school, which actually wasn't that much of a lie. She had just left out the small but very important detail that it was a private school for magic. Still, she knew she would miss them dearly.
"Well I don't know a whole lot from personal experience, but I've learned much from my family, so I'd be happy to try answering any other questions." She paused. "Say, do you about the school's four houses?"
Alex loved to speculate about which house she would be sorted into, so she beamed at the thought of discussing it with Lizzy. Maybe they would even end up in the same house!

Alex was from a wizarding family, like Lizzy had thought. She wondered what it was like growing up surrounded by magic. Not being surprised when you got your letter admitting you into Hogwarts. From what Alex had said, it sounded like wizarding families were all magical and non-wizarding families were like a dice roll. You either were a wizard or you weren't, and more often times it sounded like you weren't. It made sense if Lizzy thought about it. It was like the genes Lizzy had learned about in her science class the year before.
"Maybe we can help each other out?" Alex offered. "I would like that. And here I thought I would go through Christmas without making any friends!" Lizzy smiled happily at Alex. Mentioning Ben was kind of Alex, but it made Lizzy homesick again. Speaking of home and muggle friends, Lizzy remembered a friend she had a few years ago. He was only a year older than her and sometimes made odd things happen. Maybe he was magic too. Maybe magic had been all around her, and not in the way adults use when they talk to children.
"The four houses?" Lizzy asked. Thankfully, she could talk about this and wasn't completely ignorant. Before coming, she had read Hogwarts, A History cover to cover. Lizzy had figured it would do her some good to know a bit about the school and it turned out she was right. "I know there's Gryffindor for the brave, Ravenclaw for the wise, Hufflepuff for the kind, and Slytherin for the ambitious," Lizzy recited from memory. "I don't want to be in Slytherin. I don't have anything against Slytherins, it just doesn't seem like me, you know? Ravenclaw sounds pretty great though. I don't suppose I can judge until I'm there though." Lizzy hoped she wasn't going too fast. She had a tendency to do that when she was nervous or talking about a topic that interested her.

Alex couldn't help but smile as Lizzy spoke about the houses, almost perking up as she did so. It was refreshing to meet someone who was as excited as she was. She loved watching people talk about their passions or interests, too. The way their eyes lit up and their entire demeanor shifted warmed her heart.
She nodded in response to Lizzy. "I get that, though. My mom was a Slytherin, and I just don't think I'd fit in there." Alex loved her mother, but the two of them argued often. In some ways, they were too similar: their drive, perfectionism, and high-strung personality. In other ways, they were too different: their opinions on certain matters, their passions, and their approaches to communication. It was why she got along with her father. He complimented her mother as a Hufflepuff, so he complimented Alex as well. Still, she still didn't think of herself as Slytherin.
"A part of me is hoping for Gryffindor to be like my brothers, but I'm just not really sure. I guess only the Sorting Hat will be able to tell," she chuckled nervously, trying not to think how the next seven years of her life would be determined by the sentient article of clothing.
Waving her hand as if pushing the nerves away, her smile returned to her lips. "Well no matter what houses we're sorted into, I think you're going to be stuck with me now." Alex could already imagine them walking through the castle together, studying in the library, and sitting next to each other in classes they shared. It was exciting to think of. She only hoped the other girl wouldn't get sick of her.

Lizzy smiled, glad that Alex understood how she felt about not belonging in a certain house. Once she had said it, she realized it might have sounded a bit confusing. As Alex spoke about the houses, Lizzy could tell it was a subject that interested her. Alex had a glint in her eye as she spoke. Lizzy briefly wondered if it was the houses that excited her, or if it was the overall prospect of Hogwarts that Alex found intriguing.
"Gryffindor certainly does sound exciting," Lizzy agreed. She had said Ravenclaw very quickly, and now she was reconsidering. Ravenclaw did sound just like Lizzy and valued all the qualities and characteristics that Lizzy valued, but Ravenclaw had one thing for sure that Lizzy hated. Pressure. She had had a lot of pressure all her life with a lot of different things. School was pressuring in the way of grades and being the perfect student the teachers and even the other students expected of her. At home, she was pressured to be the kind, smart child her parents thought her to be. The only time she really felt free was when she was in the forest with Ben. She could let the weight of the world off her shoulders and be free. She could be as daring as she wanted, as silly as she felt like, as mischievous as the setting would allow. Ravenclaw would ensure that same pressure followed her every step for the next seven years, as would Hufflepuff with its kindness and Slytherin with its goals and ambitions. Gryffindor would free her from all that though.
Clearing her head of the thought she turned back to Alex. "It does seem odd letting a hat decide what's best for us though, doesn't it? What if it makes a mistake?" Okay, so maybe Lizzy was still thinking about the pressure of the houses. Hopefully Alex wouldn't run away from her because of her questions.
Lizzy smiled at Alex's next statement. "Is it me who is stuck with you, or you who is stuck with me?" Lizzy asked mischievously. She had made her first friend, and she had a feeling this friendship would last a long time.
