2021, Stage 1 Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw: Match 5

Round Two

The Ravenclaws were finally able to connect their spells in the round following their blunder. It seemed they deemed it proper to follow the same procedure until they succeeded; the same two spells erupted from their wands and hit one of each of the Gryffindor girls—but not before the lions were able to cast a flurry of spells of their own.

Twin fireballs jetted out of their wands and headed straight for Mars T'ien. It would have been devastating had both found their mark. However, only one of those projectiles would be able to hit. Mars, only starting to recover from their previous burn, is now burning once more—and it looked nastier than the last one.

It was a back-and-forth, it seemed, but where Ravenclaw was sporting sears and singes, the Gryffindors were dealing with their own banes—bubbles and bogies.

As the spell made contact, Sylvie's stomach dropped. No... She could feel it. Her nose and chest becoming congested... NOOO. A snot bubble formed at her left nostril. God. "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT... Again." She wiped her nose on her robe sleeve. "That's so sick and twisted of you!!!!" She felt absolutely terrible. And full of rage and many other unsavory things... And the BUBBLES. She'd nearly failed to noticed the bubble barrage heading towards her partner. "THEY GOT YOU TOO?" Blast. With a snort and another wipe of the nose, she got back into her ready position.

Oomph. Mars staggered back at the blow of the second Incendio Duo, clutching at their burning sleeve.

"Dammit," they winced. The familiar crackle at the back of their throat was comforting as they turned their eyes up from the smoldering fabric. Had they at least hit...?

They had! Mars let out a lopsided grin at the sight of golden bubbles swarming like bees around their Gryffindor opponent. How they adored the pesky, shimmering things.

Robert had hit too, the frightful green of the spell a warning for its nasty curse. Mars gave him a half-grin too, almost tempted to turn for a high-five. How odd.

They raised their wand again, ignoring the presence of the burning flames. What now?

Robert smiled with a grim satisfaction as his spell finally hit its target. He knew firsthand how horrible Curse of the Bogies is, which is specifically why he'd chosen it. Empathy had no place on the dueling piste, only skill and hard logic. He'd assumed that the other team knew what they were getting into, even if it was their first duel. Because of this, he was confounded by how indignant his opponent seemed at his attack. "What else did you expect?" he replied to Sylvie, honest curiosity bleeding through his voice, making his words into a real inquiry instead of a sarcastic rhetorical question.

Round Three

The spells continued to emerge. This time, however, only three spellcasters decided to cast them. A lone Ravenclaw—one who has been aflame since the start of the duels—deemed it necessary to dodge all incoming attacks.

It turned out to be the right decision.

Another attempt from the lions to burn the duelist veered greatly off course, only able to strike the distant wall on the far side of the dueling arena. This was a fortunate turn of events for the Ravenclaws—especially when the raven boy turned his wand on his ally and alleviated all the flames that plagued their battered body.

The Gryffindor's partner—even through a haze of what seemed to be an intense allergic reaction—had more luck in the spells department. Almost immediately after being able to relieve his teammate's fire problem, Robert Toukmond's wand would be wrenched out of his hand to drop a moderate distance to the side with the Gryffindor girl's disarming charm. There would be no spellcasting for him, it seemed.

Overall, the battlefield status may have changed, but the scales have not yet tipped one direction over the other—the duel does not yet have a clear winner.

"ACHOOO- Oh my god I actually did it." Even as snot dribbled down Sylvie's face, she still managed to cackle like an absolute madman as her opponent's wand flew out of their hand. Ah... That felt sweet.

"We still have a good shot at this thing, I think." She stage-whispered to her partner, as the massive amount of congestion had already made her hearing go a tad fuzzy.

The all-familiar taste of dirt permeated through their mouth as they hit the floor, rolling forward to stop in a crouching position. They could hear the spell they'd dodged whiz by their head, and let out a sigh of relief. It felt like they'd tweaked something in their back honestly, but the way their muscles rolled and stretched as they'd thrown themselves into a dodge was comforting. Something they'd practiced dozens of times before.

They'd heard Robert shout the Extinguishing Charm as they'd moved, looking up to see that the flames were no longer flickering on their sleeve.

"Thanks for that," they mentioned, eyes forward toward their Gryffindor opponents. Not all bad and not all good. They'd really have to figure out something--preferably before they were lit on fire again.

Robert grinned. Not only had his spell succeeded, but his former target was now proving to be quite the hypocrite. Immediately after loudly complaining about the unfairness of life, she now seemed to take much more joy out of his incapacitation than he'd ever taken from the effects of his own spell. He hadn't really needed any more motivation to win the duel, but any guilt that may have come from it was quickly disappearing.

"Yeah, no problem!" he quickly replied to Mars. Dueling with someone three years his senior the past year meant the opportunities to support his partner had been few and far between, but it was a welcome change from needing the support himself.
