Quidditch Fall 2021 Slytherin v Ravenclaw

It was obvious that the golden snitch was not a team player for River this game. Either that, or she was just still too distracted by her near encounter with a bludger this early in the game. Either way, she was just unable to spot the stupid little ball. She flew a little further up to get a good view of the entire field, and caught her teammates being amazing as ever, and scoring quite a bunch. At least someone was having a good game. Except for the poor students who’d been knocked off their brooms though, she was just relieved it wasn’t ravenclaws who’d been dropping. Still it was nearly impossible to not feel empathy, she’d been there herself before. Not fun. She felt a lot safer now though, catching Sylvain keeping along with her. She trusted he’d catch her should she tumble off her broom.

She shook her head trying to refocus her eyes on the small details of the field. Scanning every little area before beginning to slowly descend hoping to come across the snitch, but also keeping an eye out for any impending bludgers or attacks.

Yes, Dancelos rejoiced very early. Getting the first points didn't guarantee they would be first, and now Ravenclaw was getting closer to them. They were already in a mess. This setback was good luck for Ravenclaw, and they seemed to have taken the chance.

Now they were on the same score. Dancelos was pulling her hair. Ravenclaw tried to knock them over while Maggie was carrying Erin on her broomstick, but luckily they didn't succeed.

"Merlin's Beard!" Slytherin is left behind, Cash is eliminated and Dan's broomstick is broken. Dancelos' predictions seemed to come true, with bad weather conditions and on top of that, these setbacks. But Quidditch was a very volatile game. Many bad matches have been won in Quidditch history. Maybe they'd find the Snitch.

With every goal scored, it seemed like her voice was also getting louder. Ten, twenty, thirty points scored! Emma was never prim and prep cheerleader stereotype, but she was giving them a run for their money.

They were in the lead! But her knowledge of the sport knew it meant nothing. With her mind on the golden snitch, her eyes began scanning around the stadium. Anything... nope. She couldn't catch a glimpse of the sparking metal dancing around the skies. The seekers had a really hard job. Even from the bench, it was too much for Emma to handle.

XXXErin's return to her broom was one to rejoice over. Thank god. Maggie honestly considered Erin Ryan to be a terror. Not that she was a bad person, no, not at all, just scary. Yeah, Maggie was terrified of Erin Ryan. Maybe it was her seniority, the way that she technically was above Maggie in terms of experience, or the fact that the second she'd been caught she screamed bloody murder to get Maggie to move faster . . .

Whatever it was, Maggie was grateful that Erin was back on her broom to wreak havoc on Ravenclaw once more.

Shoot. Ravenclaw took the lead with their quaffle throwing, making multiple hoops. Maggie groaned and gripped the front of her broom, leaning forward and turning the tip to the right as she took back off. Well, back to business, then.

Lavinia had gotten her act back together, she knew exactly what she had to do now and was ready to make a move. Instead of going for the quaffle, Lavinia was going in for a blatch. It was a risky move and one that she had tried so many times before. Normally it would result in a penalty lap of shame around the field but Lavinia was determined for that to not happen again. The goal was to go for Slytherin’s seeker but unfortunately another girl was guarding him. Immediately changing direction to go for the girl, Lavinia felt little remorse as her actions sent the girl falling to the ground. She was so competitive and anything to get them ahead counted. Looking around for her penalty to be called, Lavinia let out a sigh of relief as no whistle came. She had evaded a foul this time.

Jorah answered Dan's taunt by bludgering him off his broom and breaking his precious broomstick in the process.

"Look Jorah, you even managed to knock his socks off!" commented Sylvain in the background.
"Something tells me, he likes it better that way," replied Jorah.

"Alright, Moussa. I was just havin' fun with some banter. But if that's how you want to play, ye sideways gowl, fine," commented Dan.
"Well I for one thought that destroying your broom was loads of fun!," replied Jorah.

Penalty lap. Damn.

Alexx knew she should have prepared just a little bit more, worked on her accuracy in just the slightest. Perhaps she was being over confident and this was her wake up call. Or perhaps it was just bad luck. Either way, she was resigned to admitting that she looked like a fool.

She knew deep down that after a round or two she'd get adjusted and things would go her way, but really she wanted more than anything to make a big comeback here. She was letting herself down, in some way.

It seemed the quaffle hadn't entirely been left by the wayside. As the game progressed, an increasing amount of attention was diverted back to that crimson leather. Win or lose, it wasn't all about the outcome of a single match, after all. Ultimately, the season's champion would be crowned not on the number of games they had bested, but by their point total. A team could win every match, yet lose the title should their total be found lacking by comparison. Good it was, then, that neither Ravenclaw nor Slytherin had entirely forsaken this aspect of the game. Plus, it made for more interesting viewing for the audience.

Only two would enter into the fray, however, as the game progressed. Aly and Maggie would go head to head, testing each other's agility and speed for the toss. It was a relatively close match-up, but a keen eye would recognize Aly as the better flying in this match-up. Still, that didn't stop Maggie from getting the edge in the first of their tete-a-tetes, securing a first grip on that 10-point ball and stealing away towards the Ravenclaw goals. As had become a general trend for the sport, they remained open and waiting to be fed. Maggie wouldn't leave their gaping maws wanting, and sunk a clean shot through the hoop. An easy..
"Ten points for Slytherin! Slytherin ties up the game!"

Was it rust? Or perhaps a habit of being in the shadow of the hoops? Either way, while Aly had lapsed in her first contest against the opposing Slytherin chaser, she wouldn't give her an inch again. Twice in a row, Aly would edge ahead of her, gaining the advantage and ensuring a Ravenclaw possession of the quaffle before tearing off across the pitch in a streak of blue and bronze.
"Ten points for Ravenclaw as they pull ahead again!"

The gong of the hoop would sound, reverberating in excitable hearts around the stands. Its echo would still be faintly audible even as Aly would find herself racing off towards them for a second time to renew the magnitude of that victorious chime.
"Another ten points as Ravenclaw secures a lead!"

Although perhaps that quaffle superiority couldn't entirely be attributed to skill alone...

While the quaffle game was heating up, there was no less action when it came to bludgeoning and similarly aggressive tactics. If anything, the scale of such tactics had taken on a new level. With Dan having revealed through his attempted alley-oop his awareness of the snitch, it was no surprise that Ravenclaw would feel the pressure to see him dismounted. At this point, they were flying through thin air. At any moment, Dan's fingers could grasp around that snitch and the game would be called. But that didn't mean Slytherin would be taking an assault without any kind of recompense. Perhaps aiming to take out the Ravenclaw offensive line to prevent them from clipping Dan's wings, Alexx returned from her hasty lap with fervor.

Seemingly, without even missing a beat, she went immediately into that which Alexx did best: blatching. She hadn't earned herself a titled entry into the Headliner for nothing, after all. The sky was hers, and all would quail with uncertainty in her presence, never knowing whether it would be them or another she would be targeting next; but knowing it would be someone. This time, like last, it was Jorah. Clearly marked as too dangerous to remain upon his broom, the editor in chief plummeted towards him. But again, he dodged deftly out of her way. Perhaps she'd spent a little too long on the bench; or perhaps he was just tired of being taken out at the very start of the game. Either way, "Severin! You know the drill! Take a lap!", sounded out over the megaphone, and she would need to complete a lap about the perimeter before she could return to the game.

Perhaps it ought not to be Jorah she need take out, however. While historically one of the more rule-oriented teams, Ravenclaw had turned a feather last year, showing an increasingly more sinister side to their tactics. Unlike the rest of the teams, however, who seemed to rely almost exclusively on the brute force of blatching their opponents into oblivion, the birds would shift paces and expand their strategy. Once again, Cecily would be seen flying in near to the Danko duo, her goal, however, might not have been so easily deduced. In fact, many might assume she had gone in for a blatch only to be deterred at the arrival of Percival blocking her path to the intended target. Although, it could just as easily be assumed she'd gotten waylaid in an attempt to get to the quaffle. No call came out of the action, thus nothing could be known for certain except that she'd gotten mightily up and personal with the snakes. Perhaps an exchange of some whispered sweet nothings between captains. Who could say.

What could be said for certain was that the concurrent impact that Maggie received at the hands of Gabriella had to have hurt. For any who had been following that particular area of the pitch, they would have seen Gabriella fly after and secure ownership of a bludger, wailing her bat solidly at the ball and sending it soaring towards the chaser. Perhaps that was why Aly had managed to so easily pull ahead with the quaffle; all of a sudden, Maggie had greater problems, the bludger connecting with an impact that very nearly managed to throw her over into a free fall that would have left her losing hold of consciousness and dropping to the ground. Fortunately for her, she managed to keep hold. She'd sustained a heavy blow, but she wasn't out just yet.

But if Maggie had experienced pain, it paled compared to the present that Percival had received. To commemorate his courage and chivalry of martyring himself on behalf of his captain, Jorah had express delivered him a gift in the form of a solid ball of dense metal penetrating his peripheral right before its momentum would explode through his core, the impact enough to overpower physical and mental power and blow him right from his mount. In a second, Percival would find himself falling, the sound of explosive splintering ringing in his ears as, for the second time that match, a broom had been rendered useless. While his ride had been reduced to little more than kindling, the same would not quite be said for the second-string Slytherin beater. His descent would be stalled by the swift intervention of the serpentine Valkyrie. Waiting, poised and observant, Tyranni had been keeping an eye out for her captain but had seen opportunity to save Percival instead, pulling him to relative safety. He certainly wouldn't be returning to his broom any time soon, but that didn't mean that the pair of them couldn't still impact the game.

Not that they would necessarily have to. Ravenclaw had certainly proven themselves to be ferocious in the bludger competition, and perhaps they and the audience might have forgotten that one of Slytherin's star players was a beater with a similar reputation of being targeted early. Erin might not have had an obvious impact--pun intended--just yet, but anyone who discounted her presence and failed to finish the job of taking her out would rue the day. She made that apparent right after being returned to her broom and wasting no time in getting back into the game. Taking command of an available bludger, she struck at it with a booming crack that should instantly remind anyone who had forgotten just how much power rested behind that--previously--deceptively beautiful face. Like a canon, it rocketed right for the Ravenclaw seeker. Veteran in the game, River was by no means inexperienced in being targeted and could hold her own longer than many of the league's seekers. But she was no match for that collision. The bludger would impact her solidly, rending her from her broom without even a fleeting hope to keep hold. Had it not been for Sylvain's wary gaze, that could have been it for her. Swept up to share a broom with her co-captain, however, she would continue in the game, marked among those that would end it battered, but not broken.

Seemingly, that would be the last of the commotion for that brief stint. Going unnoticed, much like Cecily's attempt, would be the other tactical attempt by the brainy birds. With Percival down temporarily for the count and no longer in a position to protect his captain, Lavinia had sought to take advantage of the opening. In a clever play, she had flown up alongside Dan and Koko, elbows poised to give them a good cobbing. It was a move not often seen, but could, if it landed well, instill significant damage, winding and disorienting a player for long enough to impact their performance. She never got the chance, however. Whether intentional or otherwise, and perhaps by a stroke of happenstance and luck, Dan and Koko managed to swerve away from her, denying her the chance. The lack of a call from the referee was telling as well. She had been subtle enough to avoid notice.

Or perhaps the ref was crooked. Ravenclaw had managed to get away with three foul moves without so much as a scolding. Slytherin, on the other hand, hadn't given any such break. Perhaps NHL referees turn to quidditch when they retired...

There was no question that Dan had his eyes on the snitch. With his direction, he and Koko continued to tear across the pitch, swerving players and bludgers and navigating the poor weather in pursuit of a taste of victory. He would not achieve it easily, however. Unquestionably, Ravenclaw felt the pressure and assaulted him with a variety of attacks, some obvious, some not. Percival was right there, of course, defending him against the worst of it. Slytherin team really had come together well, marrying defense and offense together in a cohesively operating unit that allowed him to chase after their collective dream in relative safety. Unfortunately, those erected defenses didn't necessarily prevent distraction, nor did they mean a clear path. Despite avoiding any further insult or injury, Dan would find himself unable to quite grasp hold of that snitch. The golden orb would continue to dance and dodge ahead of him, evading grasping fingers at every turn. For now.

It seemed Dan would not be the only one to find themselves in pursuit of the snitch, however. Continuing well into the game, River had been searching desperately for any sign of the elusive game-maker. Despite Dan's pursuit, however, she'd been unable to definitively find it. Until now. Dan's trajectory and chase certainly helped to narrow down the general location, and amidst the chaos, River was able to finally catch sight of gold. Right before getting knocked from her broom by a well-placed bludger. But she'd seen it. Knowing where it had been when she fell, it wouldn't take her long to pinpoint it's location and track it down again. The chase was on.

XXXRavenclaw had a hold on the lead, and that just wouldn't do, now would it? Not on Maggie's watch. Now, Aly Salinger may have been a far superior flier. It was to be expected; Maggie didn't have half her experience or deftness. But what she lacked in experience and knowledge of flight patterns, she absolutely made up for in enthusiasm. Determined and deadset, Maggie went for the quaffle.

Catch! She beamed in triumph and tossed to the unguarded goalpost, a hungry maw waiting to have a midday snack. To chomp down with strong, hard jaws.

And a score! Maggie brought down a fist in front of her chest. She'd done it! Her first goal of the season. Ever, really. First goal ever. It was figured that she could just as easily make another one, if Aly hadn't snatched up the quaffle to make her own shots.

Though it seemed that now, Maggie had bigger problems. Those problems being the bludger sent her way, angry, heaving, breathing, and looking for vengeance. The excitement she had felt was quickly replaced with agony as the bludger made contact, and Maggie very nearly fell off her broom. Miraculously, she managed to stay on, sheer will and stupid determination her motivators.

That hurt worse than anything in practice.

I really value when people use violence for me, it's actually one of my love languages.
Quidditch Fall 2021 Slytherin v Ravenclaw
Flash would refrain from saying anything as Avery and Percival made their exchange. Flash was in no position to engage with the brute, who seemed to always have something making him scowl and bristle at everything. He was the type better ignored, though he wouldn't share that appraisal out loud. He didn't want to sour Avery's point-of-view with his own bitter lens.

As he described the game, Avery paid close attention. It helped Flash stay focused, his mind wasn't wandering as much as it usually did. "Yes, they'll be taken to the hospital wing. With medical magic, almost every injury is trivial to heal."

Flash paused, realizing he had really never given his injured teammates a second thought. To him, it was just a part of the game. Back when he played football in Durham, he had to go to the Muggle school nurse when something broke. It felt like cashing out-- like payment he owed for pushing himself hard enough to win. He realized suddenly that this was not the same way everyone saw pain.

Flash would only nod along to Avery's last statement, they were on the same page. The game was becoming tense as it went on, this match being a fast-paced and brutal one. He couldn't help but wonder how much of this aggressiveness came form Sylvain's position as co-captain. Miss Cecilly had been the captain the year before with Miss Aida as co-captain, before she switched to dueling. Now, Syl was flying as well, on the field. The Ravenclaws had 50 points-- the fact that Koko had saved Dan, and Dan lost his broom, meant their goals were likely to stay wide open.

"Things are going well for Ravenclaw." Flash would observe, not moments before Jorah also managed to destroy Percival's broom as well, as he swooped in to keep the beater from dethroning Dan again. "Two brooms... wow."

Almost every team had at least one beater like this-- scary. For Slytherin, it was Erin Ryan, and she was back in the game herself, knocking River out of the sky until she was caught by Syl. The game could easily still go either way. Flash would be leaning forward and paying close attention, this was reaching a tipping point, the kind of exciting moment that made competitive sports so exhilarating. There was a chance this next round would be the last. "Come on..."
