The night of the ball had arrived and with it, mixed feelings. Ever since her arrival at Hogwarts, the fabled bi-annual festivals had rarely proceeded without some sort of trouble. Half-giants, mosps and fire, mimicry dolls, an odd sensation of amnesia from the most recent...not a single one had gone on without some sort of hitch. It was with that in mind that Evelynn had looked to this one. Of course, that wouldn't stop her from attending. Quite the contrary, in fact. It was only too clear that there were far too many of her peers who—intentionally or otherwise—remained ignorant of the dangers the school had to offer. Someone needed to keep an eye on them. This responsibility was a mantle she had donned early, and one that weighed all the more heavily since her appointment to prefect. Yes, she would attend, but, as ever, vigilant.
Interestingly, she would not be attending alone. Perhaps it not ought to have come as such a surprise that someone had sought to ask her accompaniment—this would mark the third consecutive event for such a development, after all—but she had found herself just as taken aback on this occasion as she had on the first occasion. Flattered by the thought, and hardly expecting anyone else to look her way, she hadn't had any reason to deny the request. To her amusement, her companion for the night—if that was what he was to be called—had even humoured her rather outrageous notion for an ensemble.
"I really do have to commend you on your outfit," Evelynn chimed as the pair of them approached the entrance of the festival, her genuinely complimentary tone flecked with amusement.
It wasn't the first time her attention had wandered, striking grey eyes shifting to the side to make brief eye contact with her conversational partner only to find her site fully encompassed by black velvet.
"Although I suppose I must apologize.." It had dawned on her the closer they got, that most of those in attendance had decidedly not gone with any kind of thematic costuming beyond plaid or typically formal gala attire.
And once again, she'd found her thoughts diverted by the mental image, this time interrupting their small talk surrounding the broom racing event that had transpired over the summer. They truly must have been a sight.
"I suppose I was expecting more... creative liberty among the rest. In intending to blend in, I may have caused us to stand out..."
First there was Evelynn, her athletic figure carrying her smoothly across the grounds. With every step, her silver-cream satin cape billowed with the breeze, the hem flagging out behind her to reveal glimpses of her gown beneath. This year, she had forsaken her blue dress, instead opting for a similarly pale one. Lace and cotton, tulle and georgette...Varying fabrics in white and ivory, cream and champagne had been sewn together in a mis-matched array of asymmetry to give the overall impression of a tattered floor-length gown forgotten to time and memory. Gathered at the waist, it complemented her budding womanhood without being form-fit, capped sleeves and a square neckline offering a humble, but elegant silhouette.
Complemented by a pearl necklace, a gift bestowed upon her by her "date", her ensemble might even have been considered beautiful were it not for one particular accessory that starkly contrasted the entire image. Beneath the hood that she kept pulled up over her head emerged the grotesque visage of an equine skull mask. The lower jaw had been left out, but the lengthy and tapering nasals extended sufficiently to bathe her countenance in shadow, holes in the maxilla enlarged such that she might peer through them. Its temples were decorated with ribbons of varying colours— blue, orange, red and gold—while a crown of flowers cascaded down from its poll.
The Ceryneian Hind had been the inspiration for her Greek-themed ensemble during the recent Blossom Ball. This time it was the hobby horse of Mari Lwyd.
And then there was Drakos whose rather ridiculous top-hat single-handedly made up for the notable difference—5.5 inches—in their heights. But that description to come (this author will not take the wind from his exceptional author's sails).
The crunch of leaves would sound their arrival into the festival proper. Immediately, Evelynn's attention was drawn to the design. Vibrant vegetation could be seen all around them. She knew for a certainty it had not been there even the day prior. Evidently the organizers must have been hard at work transplanting and enchanting to create this veritable wonder of a harvest display. It was almost as though they had been transposed into a small fairie garden, what with the plethora of toadstools and colourful cabbages. Fingers trailed lightly over the leaves of some of the foliage as they passed and she subtly directed the pair of them off to the right, just a little ways inside the entrance—as her etiquette research had directed—to pause and survey the gathering.
A few individuals grabbed her attention immediately. There was Harper, whose airy attire left her a spitting image of a fairytale princess. A sense of pride flushed through Evelynn at the sight of the strawberry patterned purse slung over the girl's shoulder—a birthday gift from the Gryffindor prefect. Although she couldn't help but wonder if contained there-in were new cannisters of pepper spray. Perhaps it was good that she had agreed to attend Drakos. It would be easier to keep an eye on him and protect him from further injury. There was Pride as well, looking rather dapper in his plaid suit, accompanying the former as expected. Flash stood nearby, evidently accompanied by an oriental girl that Evelynn vaguely recognized from classes with Ravenclaw. Hunt, if she wasn't mistaken. Davenport as well...
And then... her scanning let her attention to stop on a familiar figure. Moore. From behind her mask, her gaze flickered briefly to Flash to see if he'd likewise seen the boy. It seemed all the players were in attendance. All but Athanatos, although perhaps he'd already passed through an on to one of the other areas. Perhaps Marshal had as well. Or perhaps he'd yet to arrive? The skull swivelled around to peer over her shoulder towards the entrance of the festival for a few seconds as she searched for him, wondering if perhaps he had been among those to enter in behind.
"Quite the gathering already," she uttered casually after a moment, returning her attention to her companion for the event. Shoulders forcibly relaxed even while she made a mental note to keep tabs on certain individuals. Fingers lifted to rest lightly around the leather strap of the satchel hanging off her shoulder as though ensuring it remained nearby and within easy reach. Subconsciously her left hand dropped to check that her wand remained secured in the holder sewn into her dress's skirt. "It looks as though a number of students have started filing in that direction—" Her chin nudged in the direction of the Fall Ball where students who had heard the announcement for the Frog Choir could be seen gradually meandering to the designated area. "Shall we see what the commotion is about?"

It wasn't a secret to anyone who had interacted with Willow in a meaningful way that she was a practicing Wiccan. It was something that for a brief period of time she hid from those at Hogwarts for fear of being shamed for muggle magic. But at this point in her Hogwarts career, she didn't really care what people thought of it. It was something that she grew up with and did with her family, with her grandma. It was a way that she connected with nature and the energies around her. For Samhain to be the theme of the Fall Ball? Well, she was more than elated. Her brother, Flash, faced the brunt of her excitement when the theme was announced.
It seemed more important than ever that she show up and show out. She had started considering her ensemble just as soon as the ball was mentioned. She even had her parents send her one of her favorite witch hats that she wore for the season. To some, it may seem like a comical jest at Wiccans. For her, it was getting to be the most her since she had arrived at Hogwarts. She went with a sunflower theme, her shirt plastered with them to match the fake one in her hat. The shirt was worn over a black turtleneck to keep her warm in Scotland's fall. With fancy pants, and mushroom embroidered shoes she felt confident in her look. Her hair hung in loose curls around her shoulders. It had been growing out ever since she chopped it last summer and it was finally back at a long length that Willow enjoyed. On her wrist underneath the wide sleeves of the shirt was a handmade bracelet made of fake cranberry branches, sent from her parents with her request of the hat. Held loosely in her hand was a matching cranberry crown for her girlfriend.
As Willow took one last look at herself, turning in the mirror to make sure she looked good at all angles there was a bright glimmer in her blue eyes. It had been the first time she had worn pants to a ball. Most of the girls at these balls would wear long flowing ballgowns, bedazzled shoes, and their hair done up as if it had been done in a salon. Willow had often joined them in the night of being a princess. For this though she felt like ditching the princess getup and sticking with the witch one. She would return to the princess life for the next ball, probably.
She headed down to the entrance of the castle where she would meet Astrea, her beautiful girlfriend. Normally Willow's family would be celebrating Samhain by paying homage to the witches of the past, as well as her grandma who had joined the witches that had passed in her first year. Samhain was really about celebrating the dead, the end of the harvest season, the beginning of the coldest season. But, Willow would indulge the Halloween ideas that often became intertwined with Samhain.
The impatient badger would rock and forth on her heels waiting for the snake to appear. Her hands were loosely wrapped around the crown she made, and every time she heard footsteps her eyes would snap to the entrance. It only took a few minutes of waiting until Astrea appeared before her. As it normally went, Willow was breathless looking at her. She always had an ethereal presence that made it seem like she was the only one in the room. "Astrea~ Over here!" Willow raised her arm above the crowd to get Astrea's attention. "You look beautiful, like always. Not saying you don't look more beautiful than you usually do, because you know its a ball and usually people dress up for those. But- that doesn't mean I usually think you're less beautiful. Um.."
Willow's cheeks flushed a deep red as the words came tumbling out before she could even think about them. "I made you this." She lifted the crown for Astrea to see, her sleeves slipping down enough for Astrea to see the matching one she had on her wrist. "I thought it might be cute if we matched." Willow gingerly laid the crown on top of Astrea's head, sneaking in a tiny kiss on her cheek. A rare form of occasion, especially since they had been dating since last February and hadn't kissed yet. But Willow didn't mind, she was just happy to be near the girl.
She offered Astrea her elbow, like the gentleman she was. "I hear there's a frog choir performance happening if you'd like to go watch it with me." Every date with Astrea still felt like their first. Awkward and stumbling through interactions as Astrea always seemed poised and graceful. No matter where they went in the ball, Willow was honestly just happy to be there. Maybe she'd even get a proper dance in this time without having to enter a fight, or have her date ditch her twice.
Maybe this ball, wouldn't be a complete disaster.
But those were some famous last words for a Hogwarts student.

The goal was simple, not let go of Winnie, his human-shield until they were a safe distance away. Had he known that Flash Holmwood was marked by a hag, both his breast and his eye, he would have been more cautious, more concerned had he been wholly aware. Waving about the matchmaking booth reliably drove the girl away from socialization. It was an ex[ectation for a girl that romanticized everything, including the monster she had decided to accept as her paramour.
She smelled nice, like strawberries as always. His hazel gaze rarely left Flash while he spoke to Winnie. He did not trust the eerie facsimile of his dormmate. "Been looking forward to it, even if I won't believe whatever they say unless they tell me everything I want to hear," he claimed. If they had any power whatsoever they would find that the two of them were a poor match. Not that he cared if they were right or wrong, either would be an ultimate boon if she actually dragged him into the booth he just recommended. Yes, he was allegedly fickle, trying to draw his 'girlfriend' away from friends and associates with promises of prophecies of eternal love. The perpetuation of a cruel farce.
"Indeed, a pleasure," Mathias lied and could not help himself as he gave Flash a playful wink before Winnie had a chance to turn around. He would feel her shift in his embrace, by far she was stronger than him but he was not trying to hold her in place. He would feel a small hand slip into his own. It felt slightly cool from the evening fall air and he would let her fingers interface with his own.

As always, the announcement of a Hogwarts ball left Bridget to question whether or not to go. She hadn't last Blossom Ball, though as she heard it, it had actually been alright. No mosps or half-giants, the worst she'd heard of a few fights. That made two in a row now that hadn't been disasters, and she was starting to wonder if maybe Katrina had been right and it was worth giving a night of fun a shot. Not that she'd ever had much fun at any of the balls, but considering how miserable she'd been waiting alone in her dormitory, worried something was going horribly wrong, she decided she'd go. At worst, she people-watched and, if they weren't spiked, enjoyed the refreshments. A few years ago they'd had a punch that tasted like whatever your favorite beverage was, maybe they'd bring that back.
It had been kind of fun to look around Hogsmeade for a dress to wear. She'd never been a fan of the fancy ball gowns some of the girls wore, but Samhain had given off the appealing relation to a harvest festival. She'd settled somewhere between casual and fancy with a plaid-printed dress. It fit the theme, as far as she could tell, and it was a lovely shade of green; this was a ball, not a sports event, but she had fallen in love with her House colors. Her pair of black boots were chosen to wear, made at least a little nicer looking with a cast of Scourgify. They went with the dress and, more importantly, they were practical. She might have allowed a little flicker of hope the ball would be fine to stay, but she wasn't about to let her guard down. Hair pulled back with a matching green ribbon and wand tucked into a convenient pocket, she was ready in fairly minimal time.
This year, she was going alone, where years prior she'd at least gone with a friend. But Thora wasn't going, things still weren't quite fixed with Katrina, she couldn't really see herself ever asking Flash, and Illowy, like Flash, tended to have a date, which she didn't want to get in the way of. So, it was just her. She hadn't thought about the ball much leading up to it, but now that she was here, it didn't feel too great. Maybe she should have just asked Illowy. And there was another feeling she hadn't had before these things: envy, maybe? It was just that it seemed like everyone else had dates, even some of the first years that had only been at the school for two months. Before, it didn't bother her; she'd been far too young to have any interest in that. She wasn't even sure if she was interested now, but the feeling of being out of place, behind everyone else, clung.
She'd honestly had half a mind to bring Sherlock so she had someone to talk to. But that would look weird, either if someone saw her rat or just thought she was talking to herself, and a ball wasn't a good place for a pet. Alone was fine. The decorations as she emerged into the chilly air of a darkening day were a distraction, at least, toadstools and brightly colored leaves and floating jack-o-lanterns to catch her eye. It looked like there were additional activities set up around the grounds, perhaps they would be her savior later if she found herself with nothing else to do.
Having neared where people were starting to gather, she took in who was there. Already a small commotion had started between Serena Towers and a younger boy, thankfully nothing serious. A few groups were starting to form, Flash in one of them, and she'd offer a wave if he looked her way. There seemed to be a decent variation in attire, something idly noted. No one else she really knew, though Victor was over there... Marion. Her eyes darted back to Flash. It was sickening to even think about what she'd done to him.
Of course she was here. That little candle flame of hope for a decent ball was snuffed out with another gust of the wind, foreboding settling over her stiffened shoulders. She'd been so opposed to it then, the action unthinkable, but now she found herself wishing Thomas had thrown her out that Owlery window. Her fingers twitched, and she was wondering how stupid it would be to pull out her wand.

He would see the girl the moment that she entered. She looked like something someone would make into a piece of art. Simple, elegant, confident and poised. Everything that Victor was about to pretend to be, everything that Victor would ultimately become. The best incarnation of himself. He could be everything that his progenitor was, he could be more. The best version of himself he determined as he steeled his resolve and strode over to the girl.
He would likely accost her from the side. She would feel a bouquet of flowers tickle her arm, when she turned she would see an incredibly cheesy smile. "Hi, a bit late but dance?" A very last second, invitation, no assertion. "I got these for you," he made an offering of plant corpses. they were colorful and lovely, an array of purples of blues, they looked exotic.
It was a contrast from the boy who seemed so... normal but bridget as well as every other girl there already knew better. There was something off with the boy, in spite of the fact that he appeared to be genetically blessed with bright eyes and a perfect smile, he had allegedly died and come back from the dead. Perhaps he could later turn that into a line, willing to swim the River Styx to come back for you.
"Your dress looks fantastic," he commented as he attempted to keep whatever conversation they had going moving in the right direction. If she had not taken the bouquet, the flowers would drop between them as he stubbornly relinquished the blooms. "And also this," he added as he thrust a box of chocolates immediately after the flowers that were either handed off or dropped. It was a box of chocolate caramels, he had gotten them at Hogsmeade last weekend. nothing special about them, they were the sort of chocolates one would expect to see exchanged at madam Paddifoots.
It did not matter if she responded with confusion or even rejection. He tarried onward. "I am very happy that you and I will have a chance to spend the evening together."

Vladimir Athanatos wasa rather infamous figure here in Hogwarts. Know primarily as the source of many of the woes that afflicted the students of this Scottish castle. Vladimir looked like he rolled out of bed and found a tuxedo in his closet and in lieu of doing his laundry had elected to wear a tux. He had this stern look on his face, as if he did not want to actually be there. His sentiments wee written on his face, a sense of interminabible rage coupled with shame prevented the appearance of indifference.
He considered not attending the ball but there were too many promises made, words to keep. Marion was at the ball, this time somehow alone. Unlikely, there was likely some star-eyed boy about to rush in and ask to hold her hand. Last he knew, she had a thing for Alexander Varellion in spite of his vocal protests. He took a walk in the boy's head, it was a dark and terrible place. He did not believe that she was safe. His concern for her safety was in spite of her other offenses, her betrayals and her cruelty. Yes, he knew what she did and what she was hiding. or so he had believed, he was a fool and should have looked deeper, further and harder. Perhaps then he would have seen through her terrible and dark farce.
Tux on, hair a mess, he was not dressed to theme. A failing on his part but the concept was foreign to him. Where some enjoyed the passage of seasons, he barely notice if it was not for the need to don or doff a heavy jacket or the need to shield himself from the rain. He was sleeping poorly and no it was not because he was marked like Holmwood. It was because his pleas to the Ministry had gone unheeded. It was because he had to kill Victor yet again, a different year and a differing house he had yet to see him and Marion evaded hs inquiries but she saw his face in the bed of her eyes before she screamed at him to get out and rebuked him for his trespass. They had not spoken since. Jurgen and Mathias failed to end the Erin issue, today was her birthday and that would mark the end of all things. To to it off, while seemingly juvenile, he was jealous of Percival Gray who took from him something he did not quite yet have but he hoped to. She was only with him still out of obligation rather than want and while a selfish part of him knew he could force her to change her mind he could not bring himself to try.
You fight for those that want to be with you, not those that would prefer to be at someone else's side. He would see Victor and his gut would drop. He was talking to some poor girl, he could only hope that-- OK, just the two of them, no Erin just yet. He would have to rush off and hand his date off, it was foolish of him to think that someone would want to be with him. It was foolish to think that even if someone did that he had the luxury of such an interaction, that he even deserved it.
"Victor, save a dance for me!" Vladimir gave his friend a shout and a wave before he rushed off with a hated gait towards the frog choir performance.

Hugh's boots slowly dragged themselves across the mud. He'd stick out like a sore thumb, but that was part-giants for you. Their height had a tendency to make them seen. Hugh remembered why he generally avoided these events. He simply disliked people. The stares they'd give him after their second double-take, checking whether they had to run away and scream for help. It was better to be ready for a rainy day, he glanced at the incoming storm, even though it would pour soon enough already. It'd have been a shame to treat giants the same as any “normal” folks surviving the wizarding world.
Half a dozen dressed up dolls were moving along the path, a score of them attempting to look presentable in flannel prints. Hugh followed the procession at a distance all the way to the entrance of what was called a festival, where he lurked awkwardly among the pumpkins and toadstools while the crowd mumbled on. Hogwarts had made its students gullible enough to believe that this ball would go down without a fuss, Hugh reflected. They had no clue the pumpkins could be loaded with dynamite or the toadstools poisoned. Yet, Hogwarts students tended towards these events like a religion, the one that promises Armageddon for salvation.
Eventually the crowd around the area broke up and drifted away with the aimless look of people whose immediate future contains eel fishing and radish picking, not to mention: Losing their minds over how good-looking they all find themselves. Hugh did not spot his intended mark in the main group and advanced carefully along the perimeter. Vladimir had decided to show up, there was the dynamite right there, if you asked him. It was only a matter of time.

Opeila was truly glad to be back to her more simple dresses. No gemstones, no skirts that made her constantly scared to slip on them and no too fancy hairstyles. It was a Hogwarts ball, which meant that being practical had priority before looks, at least to Opeila. She had been to enough balls that ended up going down in flames.
Even better was, that there was no weird situation with her date. She didn't have to be scared that he would stab her in the back, nor would there be any relationship drama without a relationship and she was also quite sure that Flash wouldn't just abandon her.
Odds were, that Opeila would actually have an enjoyable night and that excited and relaxed her at the same time. She had been to Hogsmeade a few weeks ago to buy a dress, which was where she had also find a small silver hairpiece that she found was matching the black dress with stars perfectly. The third year was sure that there would be girls wearing gowns with skirts that were meters wide, but she had again decided not to join this unofficial competition of fanciness, but instead kept it rather plain. The black dress covered her knees and the only notable thing about it were the stars really. Opeila was quite sure that her grandmother would have agreed that it was appropriate for the occasion and her age. Besides, it was practical. She would totally be able to run with it, and it would only get dirty if something was spilled on it.
Her hair was tied into a plain, low bun on the back of her head, making the hairpiece stand out and she had even tried her hands on some make up. That being a little bit of mascara and eye shadow, the other products had intimidated her a little. She could remember Ami drawing herself a beard and using make up as if she had done it a hundred times- Well, she likely had- but Opeila had no experience in that department. And no mother or grandmother who could show her.
Her shoes were of course flat again and could hardly be more practical, being black laced boots.
Flash and her hadn't talked about meeting before the ball, nor about what outfit they were wearing, but did it matter? Opeila was happy about spending some time with her friend, no matter if their outfits were matching. Grabbing her wand and a small black jacket, she left the Slytherin common room and headed down to the grounds. She would see if he had arrived, if not there would surely be someone else she could talk to while waiting.
Her concern was unnecessary. When she entered the grounds, she soon found her friend, already greeting some others, mostly familiar faces too. There were Winnie, Aaron and a girl who Opeila vaguely remembered from class- A Ravenclaw if she recalled correctly. And apparently she had been right; Flash's and her outfit were absolutely not matching.
Opeila approached the group with a smile. "Hello together!" Almost immediately her gaze fell on Winnie's shoes, making concern spark somewhere inside her stomach at the countless images what way those heels could kill her that suddenly appeared in her head.
But Opeila would not be the one getting pessimistic tonight- everything would go well. "I love your outfits!", she commented instead. No reason to get paranoid just yet.

Given that it was his first proper event at Hogwarts, there was no way Orion knew what to expect. For all the French man knew, this event was a harmless festival for the children to enjoy. He had received a warning of sorts from the daughter of an old schoolmate and would keep an eye out regardless.
He did not wait for his date, Mardi, to arrive. He had expressed his desire to see the frog choir perform so the American would likely know where Rion had wandered off to. A hand brushed off his attire; a suit, but it would be an oddity to see Orion not wearing one. It was navy blue in colour, but the waistcoat he had paired it with with gray and had a subtle plaid pattern to it. That was right; he was wearing plaid. Hopefully his date would appreciate the effort he had put into his appearance. Sure, it was a platonic outing for the two of them, but he wanted to model appropriate apparel for Tuesday, and, perhaps most importantly, Hal.
The divination professor was often a walking 'what not to wear' article ripped directly from the gossip columns of the daily prophet. Rion was not certain if he had somehow tricked a woman into agreeing to attend the ball with him, but may Merlin had mercy on their soul if he had.
As he walked past the small group of student, he would nod his head in greeting. "Hello, I hope you are all planning on behaving this evening." He couldn't help but tease, giving the group a small wink before heading towards the Quidditch pitch.

Happy birthday to me... Happy birthday to me... Happy birthday to me...
Birthdays were lonesome. Just another day to most, but to some the marked passage of another year lived, another year wasted and spent, one step closer to the grave. She did not feel that she had accomplished what she should have in her life but she knew that this way the day that her life ended. The day she was born would also be the day that she died. She had handed off Tarantulasaurus, there were really no other loose ends that she could think of. She did not remember Percival's betrayal or that she had dragged him to the medical offices adjacent.
She was drawn to large crowds, the scent of people congregating. Her long, blonde hair hung limply about her face, it appeared dark from the filth and mud. She was barefoot, her naked soles would slap against the cool ground. She probably had a pair of shoes someplace on the ground, she just had no idea where she had put them.
She was dressed at the very least. not well mind anyone. She wore what could be best described as a plaid button down shirt that was thankfully too long for her. She would shuffle into the ball, a paranoid glance in either direction. It was by great fortune that she was unaware of the fact that there were several people at this very ball that had every intention of killing her. Her deranged mind gave her pause enough.
