Dear Hogwarts Student,

In about 3 and a half weeks, I learned that your school once again is going to play host to some international wizarding cooporation and fun. Along with other wizarding schools, students from my Ilvermorny were invited to visit your school within the Scottish Highlands. Some of my fellow classmates have been able to already partake in such fun but this is the first that I'm going to be attending.

My name is Miles Thatcher and I am a Second Year student in the Thunderbird house. They say those in Thunderbird represent the soul and we favor adventures. Personally, I think that sounds about right. I enjoy learning about plants, potions, and magical creatures and hope to travel the world after graduation to learn all I can about those things, gaining knowledge from all around the world. My parents do that now, at least when it comes to magical creatures. They're magizoologists and when I'm at home but they're not, I stay with my grandmother. She's cool. She's taught me a lot about potion making.

My hobbies? I like to get into some mischief now and then. I suppose its that thirst for adventure. I also play quidditch and have been for my house team. I'm a beater. Someone's got to keep those chasers in line, right?

So a professor of mine told me to write and that maybe having a quill companion at Hogwarts would make the transition to visiting a little easier. I find it difficult to write the first letter because I don't know who I'm writing to. But hi. Again, I'm Miles, and I look forward to visiting your school. Please write back and tell me a little bit about yourself.

Sincerely,
Miles Thatcher

Dear Miles Thatcher,

Hello! I was also just told of the event taking place and I'm excited to meet you, your fellow classmates from Ilvermorny, and the many other schools which plan to attend. This is my first time also participating in this program, so I'm still learning the ropes.

My name is Lani Beckett and I'm a First-Year student in the house of Ravenclaw. Our house is said to value intelligence, learning, wisdom, and wit, which I agree on. (In my opinion, the Thunderbird house reminds me of Gryffindor.) I love to learn about charms, potions, and astronomy and hope to make new discoveries with my knowledge from these subjects. Your idea of traveling the world and gaining more understanding from the subjects you like is an amazing idea that I am in awe with. My mother is from a pure-blood family and works in Magical Law Enforcement for the Ministry of Magic, and my father, who is a muggle, is a famous artist. My mum would usually be gone most of the day, so my father taught me all there is to know about art; from sculpting to paper mache.

My hobbies are mostly design and other things in the art area. I also love to read late at night, which soothes me somehow. Playing quidditch sounds exciting! I'm not the athletic type so I don't really know much about it. Maybe you could explain it a bit more in your next letter?

I hope this letter gets to you. My mother said she had an owl pal back when she was a student and they became the best of companions. Maybe if we owl each other a bit more we could become close friends. I would love to learn more about you, Miles!

Sincerely,
Lani Beckett

Dear Ms. @Lani Beckett,

I've talked to a few of my Ilvermorny classmates who attended previous events at Hogwarts and they always spoke nicely of your house of Ravenclaw. I believe it was Slytherin and Gryffindor that were the two brought up most in conversation as being rather pretentious at times. Good traits too, don't get me wrong, but if tailored the wrong way. I suppose that's true for anything in anyone.

Astronomy is something I would love to learn more about. I can find the North Star and therefore know my North, South, East, and West at nighttime but beyond that, I haven't much other understanding. I heard your school has a beautiful Astronomy Tower that outlooks the Scottish Highlands. Perhaps when I arrive you could show me around? ... Or is that being too pretentious? Maybe Thunderbirds do mimic Gryffindors after all.

Still, if you should decide to take me on board and be my mentor of all things Hogwarts and Lani Beckett, perhaps then you can also share some of your artwork. I do enjoy sketching and have also filled in some of those sketches with watercolor but haven't delved into art much beyond that.

Having a muggle parent sounds complicated! Was it difficult growing up in a split cultured family like that? I would think it would be a lot like entering a new world. Like me, I've never ridden in a car or an airplane, nor have I had any of the current muggle devices. My parents aren't into such things.

Quidditch is a lot to explain. Maybe when we get to Hogwarts I can show you a bit about it. Take you on a midnight ride on a broom and show you a few things (oh Merlin that sounds like a pickup line) and you can tell me some about the night sky.

So with the other schools coming, I heard there might be some sporting events and we'll be able to attend some of the classes at Hogwarts. Anything else I should know about? They're having us pack some formal attire. Do you all have to dress up for the evening meal or something?

Headed closer to arrival,
Miles Thatcher

Dear Miles Thatcher,

Please, just call me Lani! I don't really like being called by my full name. I can agree that both Gryffindor and Slytherin have their bad traits, but I generally look at the good side of things, not the bad. I admire the bravery and determination that students in the Gryffindor house have, so that's the way I think of the Thunderbirds, too.

It's true that the view from the Astronomy Tower is breathtaking. I've always wanted to sneak there late at night to stargaze some more. When you get to Hogwarts I could maybe bring you up to the tower and show you my favorite constellations, then you can show me yours. You could think of it as a mentoring lesson from yours truly.

Your watercolor sketches sound amazing. Maybe you could bring them with you and I can give you some tips? I have plenty of art pieces that I could share with you! Sharing my art with others is new to me, since most people I've met never really want to see it. I've only shown them to my dad, and he's the type of guy who's always nice to his kid, (like, the word "No" is not in his dictionary) so I don't really have any second opinions on them.

Growing up in a split-cultured family was kind of intense. To be honest, fights would break out sometimes between my parents over really silly stuff. It's stressful worrying about both the muggle world and the wizarding world while trying to keep your parents from arguing over stuff like where we should go for Christmas or who to invite for Thanksgiving dinner. What's it like growing up with pure-blood parents? Do they not argue as much?

I guess you would be my mentor for all things Quidditch, and a midnight ride does sound kind of romantic (are you sure you didn't write that pickup line on purpose?). I've never actually been to a live Quidditch game, so maybe you could take me to one before you leave, though you don't have to.

The formal attire maybe for the Fall Ball coming up and the feast we have when Ilvermorny and the other schools arrive. It depends though, your school may have activities of their own. What are you looking forward to when you get here?

Hope to see you soon,
Lani Beckett

Writing to @Lani Beckett

Dear Lani,

Glad to see that some formalities can be tossed and we can perhaps start getting to know one another a little more. I'm not too formal of a guy but I was mostly raised by my grandmother so my mannerisms, at times, can be a bit old-school.

Sneaking off to the Astronomy Tower at night? Check. It's now on my list. If we serve detention, we'll just have to serve it together and begin a life of crime early on in our relationship. Hopefully it doesn't go as far as Bonnie and Clyde but if that is what fate shall bring us, then I'm in. We've already begun this lifestyle. One can't change it.

...Okay, maybe that's projecting a little TOO far out, but one never truly knows. Either way, mentoring session late at night in the Astronomy Tower is a go.

I'll bring my sketches and let you see. They're pretty detailed. I do it for the documentation of the plants that I find or study so they have to be pretty accurate. I'm not artistic in the sense of having any creativity at all. If I were an artist, I'd have to be alive during the age of Realism and nothing more. I'd love to see your art if you could trust me with it and I promise to be gentle, yet truthful, in my response and critic.

As for other critiques, like what it was like growing up in a pureblodded home...I don't know how to really answer that, to be honest. I come from a pureblooded home, from a pureblodded community, and go to a pureblooded school (mostly). I've never known any other way. I hear there are muggleborns and those like you that have mixed parents at the other schools but I haven't met anyone that is different than I am yet face to face. It'll be interesting to share your perspectives, not just on favorite constellations, but on technology as well. I've never held a rectangle phone device or ridden on muggle transportation vehicles.

We've got a lot of work to do once I arrive, you and I. Forbidden adventures in the Astronomy Tower, Art Critiques, Tales of Lifestyles of the Pureblood and Not, Quidditch Training, Midnight Romantic Broom Rides...and the school is having a formal Fall Ball? How is one ever to find a date amongst all the others? So much going on!

You excited to go? What's your date like? Tall, dark, and handsome? I like a school dance here at Ilvermony. They can usually be a better way to spend the evening than to do homework.

Write me back and hopefully we can meet up soon!
Miles

Dear Miles,

I'm very excited to get to know you more! I can agree on mannerisms since my grandmother visited my parents and me during weekends and holidays. It becomes a habit, doesn't it?

Now that we can say that code Astronomy Tower is a go, I say we need a plan to get there and leave, though I may forget it sharing facts about the night sky with you. If we're going to become criminals we'd better come up with a duo name. Maybe it could be like just our names, or maybe some cool title that stands out from the rest. Anything is fine if we come up with it together.

I would like to thank you for choosing to be truthful, yet polite when you critique my art. That relieves some of my anxiety to share it and makes me even more excited to see you. I love how you document your plants with art. Do you wait for them to grow before you sketch them or do you sketch them while they're growing? I usually just paint or sculpt what's around me, like a book or the sky, but most times I paint more abstract and animated things. That should be a preview of what you'll see when you get here.

It must be easy not having to worry between the muggle world and the wizarding world. No conflict between Thanksgiving guests and all that. But you've never met anyone who's not a pureblood? I guess I'll be the first one. Don't worry, I'll show you everything in the muggle world: Smart Phones, Television, Computers, and fast food. Fast food does become an addiction, though, so you've been warned. As for holidays, my family mostly celebrates muggle holidays, so I guess you can tell me more about holidays in the wizarding world.

We sure have a lot to do when you get to Hogwarts! I guess I'd better make a list so I don't forget all the fun things we're going to do. And romantic broom rides? I guess I should be prepared for romantic flights in the night sky.

As for the Fall Ball, I actually don't have a date to the ball yet. Are you planning on asking anyone?

I'm excited to meet you!
Lani

iNPC Miles Thatcher to @Lani Beckett. I thought perhaps instead of responding to this particular reply, you could maybe start up their interaction at the ball with her waiting at the refreshment table?

Lani,

The school owls here at Ilvermorny have gone on strike. Literally. Our gameskeeper thought to help keep them trim and fit that he would cut back on the snippets of treats that they received on a regular basis and change it to cut up pieces of carrots. Apparently the owls staged some sort of revolution because our letters have been backed up! The groundskeeper found 387 of them stuffed in his chimney alone.

Smart creatures, owls. I think I'll have to get one someday.

Anyway, with all that being said, I've got everything packed up and ready to visit that Hogwarts school of yours, but I don't have all too much time to write this letter. I wanted to make sure to get it out to you before we left though. Hopefully your school's owls are far less ornery.

How about a blind date to this school dance of yours? He's tall, dark (at least dark haired) and handsome and comes with quite a lovely American accent. You're in the intelligent house so surely you've figured out by now that I'm offering up myself here. If you've already found a date, great but I'd still like to meet regardless. Why don't we meet by the punch bowl. Isn't there always a punch bowl? Or at least some refreshments. We will meet by there. I'll be there holding a single red flower.

Looking forward to finally meeting you,
Miles
