Magic vs Muggle
@Adelaide Barlowe - 4th of October 4:15PM
Class had ended a few minutes ago and grey clouds filled the sky on this October afternoon. Jean had her brown leather bag slung over her shoulder, her books knocking each other at each step she took. Most of the castle was still unknown to her and being able to find you way around seemed like something vital here. Although she didn't mind being late to class too much, she hated having trouble getting back to the dormitories. But it seemed a little early to head back now.
The sound of her shoes tapping the cold stone floor echoed in the tall, narrow corridor as she tried to get outside. After a few turns left and right, another corridor she found a courtyard. It was quite nice, the sun was partially blocked by the ivy-covered walls enclosing it. At its center was a stone fountain where a few students were sitting. Surprisingly, not many students were gathered her, much to her pleasure.
She found a spot in the corner, by a tree that seemed quite confortable. Throwing her bag down, she sat on the floor making sure not to stain her trousers too much and tucked her messy brown her behind her ears. The air was nice and fresh, a cool breeze ruffled through the branches and made them dance, the golden light cast interesting shadows on the floor. She put her back on the wall behind her and enjoyed the scene for a little while, her knees close to her chest, her arms wrapped around them.
She then looked through her bag to find something to read, unfortunately all there was 'Hogwarts a History' which didn't seem all that appealing. Ugh, she was gonna look like one of those assiduous students. The idea of that didn't sit with her very well but she didn't really know what else to do right now. Reluctantly she pulled the book out, not noticing something fell out of her bag. She sat back, her ipod and her earphones lying on the floor.
NOTE : I am aware that the IPod doesn't work at Hogwarts, Jean just has it in her bag

Outfit: Uniform Classes had just about ended for the day and Adelaide had took the opportunity to get some fresh air while doing some reading. It wasn't the brightest of days, but as it wasn't raining, Adelaide thought it was suitable enough weather to read outside. Surprisingly, the girl hadn't found it that hard to find her way around Hogwarts, she was expecting it to be a lot harder than it actually was. After a few times of losing her way and having to ask one of the older students for directions, she had gotten the hang of it pretty quickly.
She made her way to the courtyard, thankful that not a lot of students were gathered here so at least she'd be able to read without having to worry about other students being too noisy. Adelaide loved Hogwarts, but one obvious downside was having to be around hundreds of other students all the time. The amount of noise that occurred in the Great Hall and the common rooms sometimes became too much, and Adelaide longed for some peace and quiet. Unfortunately, there wasn't many places in Hogwarts to gain said peace and quiet. She was a frequent visitor of the library, as it was the only place in the school you had to be quiet in, but sometimes she longed for a change of scenery. That was where the courtyard came in, on days where it wasn't as busy it was very relaxing and a place where Adelaide could unwind after a day of classes.
Making her way over to the fountain, she sat down on the ledge and put her bag down, opening it to take out The Tales of Beedle the Bard that she had purchased in Diagon Alley while she was shopping for her school supplies. She had obviously heard all the stories before, her mother used to read them to her as bedtime stories each night when she was young, but she had the sudden urge to reread the stories herself. Opening it to the page she bookmarked, she started reading. She was only halfway through the page she was reading until something caught her eye, she looked up to see a young girl who was currently busy reading like she was. But beside her was something that Adelaide had never seen before in her life, it looked like a block of some sorts. It did remind her of this muggle invention called a 'phone' that she recalled her sister telling her about on the way to Platform 9 3/4, apparently her sister's friend was a muggle-born and had told her sister all about the things muggles had invented, but Adelaide had absolutely no idea what it done. Did they even work at Hogwarts?
Adelaide's curiosity was growing by the second, but she also didn't want to be rude and interrupt the girl while she was very clearly busy reading. Adelaide absolutely hated to be interrupted when she was clearly busy, and she definitely didn't want to be a hypocrite. But, she was also incredibly curious about what that block was. So, despite her better judgement, she made her way over to the girl. She picked up the block, which she now noticed had a lead with two little things dangling from it, now what on earth was that? "Um, apologies if I'm disturbing you," It'd be best if she started off with an apology, in case this girl was going to be upset at the interruption, "but do you mind telling me what this thing is? Why are you carrying a block around in your bag? And what's this thing dangling from it?"

Strangely, the book wasn’t quite as boring as Jean had thought. On the contrary, although she would never admit it, she took joy in acquiring new information about this enigmatic castle, flipping page after page, longing for the next thing she would be learning.Enthralled by the book, she hadn’t noticed the young Ravenclaw slowly making her way towards her. It was when the shadow of the girl prevent the golden rays of light to hit her that she reluctantly lifted her gaze off her book only to see a blond girl towering over her.
Jean placed her thumb on the page before closing the book, keeping track of where she ought to continue when the conditions would be more favourable. Her eyebrows were furrowed as she looked at the girl from head to toe, a slight hint of anger gleaming in her eyes. This better be worth her while. Before she could utter a single word, the student picked up an item from the ground that Jean identified as her iPod, both her earphones dangling in mid air. Jean looked at the girl startled, her mouth slightly open, not quite understanding what led the girl to reach for the object.
‘Um, apologies if I’m disturbing you,’ the girl said, and Jean’s clenched jaw softened a little. ‘But do you mind telling me what this thing is ? Why are you carrying a block around in your bag ? And what’s this thing dangling from it ?’
Jean’s expression went from indignation to stunned. It hadn’t occurred to her for a second that wizards and witches that had lived all their lives constantly surrounded by magic and bizarre enchanted objects had absolutely no clue what people like her, living in the Muggle world, used on a day to day basis. It took her a few seconds to article a single word, not quite knowing how to explain this, this thing that seemed so mundane to her. It would be like explaining what a bed was. Taking a deep breath in, she put her book aside, creasing the corner of the page before getting up.
‘Thats an iPod’ she said coldly. ‘And I would appreciate it if you didn’t just grab it, it’s quite fragile.’ She was actually scared of her mom’s reaction if she were to tell her it was broken. Delicately, she took it from the girl’s hands, turning it on.
‘We - Muggles use it to listen to music. But it doesn’t work here.’ Jean said, bringing it closer to the girl so she could have a look at it. ‘These are earphones, you put them in your ears and the music through. Sort of.’
Jean looked at it for a moment, saddened that these things didn’t work here. All those dull afternoons spent staring out the windows, desperately trying to make time pass by, would’ve been much more enjoyable if she had been able to listen to music.
‘You can try on the earphones, but nothing’ll work. You can go through my music if you want to. Its a tactile screen, don’t know if you’ve ever seen one of those.’ She added, her tone of voice a lot softer now, finding it quite adorable that this girl was just discovering things she had taken for granted for a very long time.
‘I’m Jean by the way. Jean Edevane.’ She said smiling slightly.

Outfit: Uniform An iPod. Whatever that was meant to mean. Her brows raised slightly at the girl's cold tone, but Adelaide couldn't exactly blame her, she herself wouldn't be too happy if someone came over to her while she was clearly busy. It was quite abnormal for Adelaide to go over to someone and be the one to initiate the conversation, especially if said person was busy, but her curiosity had overridden the part of her brain telling her to not disturb this girl and she had went over to her anyway. "Sorry, I didn't know it was fragile," she said, "I didn't even know what it was and it doesn't exactly have a big red 'fragile' sign on it." After realizing what she had said, she bit her tongue to stop herself from speaking anymore. It was a problem Adelaide had, sometimes she didn't even realize what she was saying before it was already said and the damage was done. Hopefully this girl wouldn't take much offense to it, because she was really not in the mood to gain another enemy at Hogwarts.
Adelaide leaned in slightly to take a look at the iPod, "Why don't you just use a radio?" This device seemed quite pointless to Adelaide, she was quite confident that muggles had their own versions of radios so she didn't understand why someone had felt the need to create another device that could play music. It seemed even more pointless that the strange device didn't even work in Hogwarts. "Why did you bring it with you if it doesn't work?" She asked the girl curiously. Her brain was moving at a rapid pace, mentally noting down all these words the girl was saying. iPods, earphones, it was all very fascinating to Adelaide. She was quite excited to start Muggle Studies in her third year, having grown up surrounded by magic and the wizarding world her entire life, the knowledge she had of the muggle world was sparse. The thought that she had an entire world to learn about filled the blonde with a lot of joy, she always loved learning new things and filling her mind with new knowledge. Now, though, she would have to settle with asking this girl as many questions as she could, that is if she was up to it.
"I can try them on?" Her eyes lit up at the thought of being able to try a muggle invention. Maybe this girl thought she was weird, she couldn't bring herself to care though as she picked up the earphones and placed them in her ear. They felt weird and a bit uncomfortable, but she did appreciate the privacy it gave you when listening to music. She figured muggles used them to be able to listen to music at loud volumes without disturbing anyone, "They're cool! Would they not hurt your ears though? They're a bit uncomfortable." She took the earphones out, maybe it was just because she wasn't used to the feeling of them.
Tapping her finger on the screen of the iPod gently, she scrolled and let out a gasp when the screen moved down. "Oh my god, that's really cool! How did it do that?" It felt like magic, but it couldn't possibly be, muggles don't have magic. She didn't recognize any of the muggle bands and singers that the girl had on her iPod and it was a shame that this device didn't work in Hogwarts because Adelaide thought she might actually start squealing if she could listen to the muggle singers. She smiled at the girl when she introduced herself, "I'm Adelaide Barlowe," she held out her hand for the girl to shake. "It's nice to meet you, muggle world extraordinaire." Hopefully Jean liked her new nickname Adelaide had given her, because she was going to keep calling her that whether she liked it or not.

The girl had asked a lot of questions, undoubtably like she would have done being presented with a fully enchanted object. A smile started to appear on Jean’s face as she thought the girl reminded her of her quite a bit. Instead of feeling anger when the girl pointed out, in a snarlyway, that she couldn't have guessed the object was fragile, she understood she would’ve answered something relatively similar.
Jean explained that radios were far less common among young people, well young muggles, and that they weren’t used for the same things. iPods were used specifically for music, the radio-equivalent would be a speaker that would play music loudly. iPods on the other hand, enabled the user to listen to music at whatever volumed they deemed confortable, without bothering anyone.
‘I loved listening to music when I was on the bus, or when I’d stroll through town, or just when I felt very sad, angry. You’re kind of in your own world you know ? You hear nothing but your music, feels a little like being in a movie sometimes.’ She said nodding her head lightly.'If you know what it is.’ Jean added, her eyebrows lifted.
She then explained that the discomfort earphones caused dissipated quite rapidly, as one would get used to them. Jean chuckled when Adelaide tried them on, utterly amazed by the device she was handed.
‘Oh my god, that’s really cool! How did it do that?’ The girl asked.
‘Well, I can’t exactly tell you how it works, it's quite complex to be honest. It electrical stimulations, or something like that. This thing is full of electrical circuits, and each time your finger touches the screen, let’s say a message goes through this circuits that tells it to scroll down, click on a music or exit from a playlist. A little like a your brain asks your arm to lift up or your foot to go forward. Quite similar.’ Jean told her, hoping the words she just pronounced didn’t feel like total gibberish to Adelaide.
She hoped the girl would one day be able to listen to music through her earphones. Jean shook the girl’s hand and smiled at the nickname she had just given her.
‘Tell you what, since these things don’t work here - learnt the hard way - I’ll let you borrow them during the Christmas holidays so you can try it back home. You’ll just give it back when you get back.’ Jean said, surprising herself as the words came out of her mouth.
‘Just imagine there’s a big red ‘fragile’ sign on it, okay ? It’s fragile and expensive and my mom will never buy me another one. Take care of it incessantly inquisitive witch’ she said, looking amused.
Jean handed it to the girl, imaging her reaction when she’d hear music for the first time.

Outfit: Uniform Adelaide's full attention was directed at Jean, she was nodding avidly as the girl was explaining that radios were surprisingly less common in the muggle world. These devices, iPods, were supposedly used only for music. Admittedly, it did seem to be quite a useful invention now that Adelaide knew more about it. She nodded, "Yes, I totally understand what you mean by being in your own world." When she did ballet, she felt in her own world, it was only her and the music, nothing else mattered, so she could completely understand where Jean was coming from. "Movies? Are they another muggle thing? Does it have to do with.. moving, given the name?" The more Adelaide talked to Jean, the more she realized how much of the muggle world she had yet to learn about. It was fascinating to her.
The explanation Jean gave about how the iPod had scrolled down was slightly confusing to Adelaide, mostly given the fact that she had never heard of half the words that were coming out of Jean's mouth, but she still thinks she managed to grasp the concept okay. "Ah, okay, so this iPod is basically just a brain that's telling the phone to scroll down when someone touches it?" She asks, hoping that she had understood what Jean was trying to say.
Adelaide's jaw dropped at Jean's next words, with her mouth in a big O shape, she let out the biggest gasp she thinks she's ever made. "Really?!" She all but squealed, "You're really letting me borrow it over Christmas? Are you sure? That's amazing! Thank you, thank you, thank you!" She knew she was acting like a giddy child on their birthday when they got the present they were desperately hoping for, but she really couldn't find it in herself to care as she was handed Jean's iPod. She cradled it gently in her hands, like she was holding a newborn baby, "I will take care of this as if my life depended on it." She promised Jean. The blonde would not hesitate to fight her sister if she decided to go anywhere near it.
Incessantly inquisitive witch, huh, well she couldn't deny that the name did suit her. "Well, muggle world extraordinaire, you don't mind if I come up to you one day with a list full of questions about the muggle world, do you? Because believe me, I have plenty, and what I certainly do not have is the patience to wait until third year to start Muggle Studies." She winked mischievously at Jean, this poor girl did not know what she was getting herself into. Adelaide was already thinking about all the questions she needed to write down as soon as she got back to her common room.

The girl seemed overjoyed when told that she could keep the iPod with her until after the Christmas holidays. A discreet smile formed on Jeans face due to the girl’s reaction, it almost seemed like Christmas had come early for Adelaide. Although she was glad to make the girl happy, she couldn’t help herself from imagining the worst. If the girl were to break the device, she knew that all the begging she could do wouldn’t convince her mom to buy her a new one. That would mean she wouldn’t be able to listen to music in the muggle world too, and that sounded dreadful.
She restrained herself from warning the girl once more, knowing she had probably understood the importance and fragility of the object. Jean thought to herself that there were so many objects that the girl certainly couldn’t even begin to imagine, and so many questions she would ask. There were also numerous enchanted objects that Jean didn’t know about and would probably be just as curious about. Magic made so much more things possible, that she wondered were the limits of it could be. Could they cure every muggle known diseases, could they teleport ? Jean didn’t fully grasp how truly fascinating and unbelievable magic could be.
‘It’s your turn now. I’ve told you about one muggle object, now you must tell me about an enchanted one. I’m pretty sure I can’t even imagine the possibilities that come with magic. Go on.’ She said, tilting her head slightly to the side, an amused and intrigued look on her face.
‘Surprise me. Tell me about something someone who hasn’t lived with magic would be astonished by. I don’t want anything run-of-the-mill. I’m sure you have something you can tell me about.’
Her smile got a little more visible, excited to now a little more about enchanted objects. Jean wanted to be amazed, she wanted to learn about something so extraordinary she wouldn’t believe the girl, and she was convinced magic could do that.

Outfit: Uniform Jean's question got her thinking. "A magical object that someone who hasn't grown up with magic would be astonished by? Hm." She pondered the question deeply for a couple of minutes. There were definitely so many magical objects that she thought muggles would be astonished by. From what Adelaide knew, magic was only in books and stories for muggles. If you told them that real magic actually existed, they would probably just laugh at you. If only they knew. After pondering on her answer, she finally came to a conclusion on what she wanted to tell Jean. "Well, it's not an object per say, but I definitely don't think muggles can do it. It's called apparition, which is basically teleporting. Can muggles do that?" She was pretty confident that muggles hadn't yet found out a way to teleport, but if they had she would be pretty impressed. She hoped Jean was as astonished by apparition as Adelaide was with the iPod, which was still clutched safely in her hand. She didn't want to risk breaking it, so she had refrained from putting it into her bag.
"If apparition isn't that exciting for you, have you ever heard of the invisibility cloak? It does exactly as it says, makes the user invisible. Honestly, there's so many magical objects I can tell you about!" She knew once she started talking about magical objects, she wouldn't be able to stop. Despite how much she was interested in the muggle world, she also wanted to tell Jean about all the magical objects that wizards have. "There's so many magical objects that I think would make muggle's heads explode. Have muggles figured out how to turn back time? We have, with a time-turner. Although, they aren't really up for sale in Diagon Alley or anywhere. None of the really cool stuff is, because they're usually incredibly rare and valuable or very dangerous." She explained. "You can obviously read about them in books, but I'd be surprised if you ever actually got your hands on one of them."
