@Alan Vanes

Jake had spent many days of his past two years at Hogwarts feeling many different kinds of afraid. There had been fires, darkness, mosps, masks, shadows, bullies, not to mention intense bouts of homesickness that would come and go without cure.
But the butterflies that were bubbling inside him now in his third year were from a new feeling...a fear he had never felt before: the fear of impending responsibility.
It was just a few days before the dueling season was going to begin, and Jake was somehow now the co-vice-captain of Hufflepuff House. It was his first ever job. The first time he'd REALLY been in charge of anything. Ok...maybe that wasn't quite true. There WAS the Scamander Petsitting Clinic that he had set up last year with his friend Julian.
But that was animals...Jake understood animals.
THIS was other kids, and that was a whole other different beast. One that was really much scarier.
So when breakfast was coming to an end one morning, a rather frazzled-looking Jake left his friends and went to the Gryffindor table, looking for Alan. Alan was his oldest friend, and he had been a duel captain already...so he was the perfect person to talk to. He knew how to do it, and he knew Jake. He had once gotten Jake Flint the worry eater for his birthday, but today it wasn't the worry eater that Jake wanted to talk about his worries with, but the boy himself.
Alan was always easy to find at the Gryffindor table. Jake would stand behind him quietly, until it looked like he was able to be bothered. When that time came, Jake poked his friend lightly upon the back to get his attention, a soft touch that Alan just might recognize.
"Um...Alan...? Can I talk to you about something...?" Jake asked, fidgeting a little as he looked up at the older Gryffindor. "In private...?" he added with a sheepish glance towards the other kids at the table.

The Gryffindor sat at his house's table, waiting for Howard to join him and in the midst of taking a bite out of his bacon cheese sandwich, when suddenly a familiar voice captured his attention. Setting down to sandwich and wiping his hands on a napkin, he would thoroughly chew the bite he had taken and swallow it, before offering the Hufflepuff a tilt of his head. "Hey Jake, um sure?" he wondered if it might have anything to do with the fact that the next day would mark the day on which the duels would occur and it would be Jake's job to moderate one of them.
The Gryffindor would glance around the great hall. "Now? Or shall we eat some breakfast first?" he asked the Hufflepuff. "Congrats on becoming co-captain by the way, that is a big step," he would let the badger know with a bright smile. He was sure that Jake must have been scared to apply, so the fifth year wanted his friend to know that he was proud at him for actually succeeding to jump over his own shadow and pursuing something he had wanted to do. He would be fine with either answer, he could simply pack up his sandwich and eat it on his way to class. He would have to let Howard know during lunch as to why they had not spend breakfast time together. He wondered how Jake would react to seeing Howard, and vice versa. He was sure that Jake would still get scared of Alan's friend which in a way saddened the Gryffindor. He wish he could have removed the incident between the two from existence and he understood it was wrong to simply blame it all on Aurelia, but he liked to think of Howard of a mostly good guy. He had noticed that he had become a lot more comfortable around the prefect, he also hoped that he would not get himself into trouble again. Alan wished to help Howard and help him be his best self and he hoped he wouldn't get burned because of that. Though he believed in Howard and knew him to be strong and responsible. He had faith in his friend! He would blink away his thoughts as he focused on Jake with a light smile, to see how he would respond.

Now? Or eat some breakfast first?
Jake narrowed his eyes for a moment, considering his options. He wanted to say now...but that didn't seem like the polite way to answer. What if Alan wanted breakfast? Maybe he should have waited to get him after breakfast was over, or waited to catch him in the hall.
"I can wait," Jake said finally, taking a seat next to Alan. "I don't need anything to eat though. I'm not very hungry." Jake rarely ate much for breakfast on days when he was nervous. For now, he just sat sideways on the bench of the Gryffindor table to face Alan and watch him to see when he was done (if Alan wasn't uncomfortable having his every bite watched).
The Gryffindor congratulated Jake on his new position as dueling co-captain and told him what a big step it was. Jake felt a small twist in his stomach at the words. It WAS a big step...it was a really big step.
"Erm, thanks."
Jake forced a smile onto his face. He didn't want Alan to know that the words 'big step' made him feel a bit more scared than excited.
It wasn't like he wasn't proud of himself...he was. And the proud smile on Alan's face felt even better. But would Alan be smiling like that if Jake just messed everything up? No...that smile would disappear really fast. Alan smiled like that because he believed in him, and that DID feel good...not everybody did, after all....but the problem was that Jake still wasn't so sure he believed in himself.
"Actually, that's kinda what I wanted to talk about..." he admitted, as he waited for his older friend to finish his sandwich.

"Are you sure you are not hungry? Skipping meals really is not healthy for you," he argued slightly against the younger badgers words, offering him a slight smile as he sat down next to him. A plate appeared in front of the badger, the usual Hogwarts charm, perhaps one more invitation to take some of the food that lined the middle of the table. Alan felt a little sweet, so he reached for a few crepes and covered them in chocolate sauce, milk chocolate to be exact. To actually eat he would fill his cup with pumpkin juice, before taking a fork and a knife to cut his food into pieces.
He was a bit surprised when Jake let him know he wanted to talk about becoming a captain, for a moment scared the Hufflepuff would just get cold feet and drop the duty, but he knew better than to label Jake as someone irresponsible. "Did something happen?" he therefore asked carefully, before shoving a fork loaded with the sweet treat into his mouth. He hoped he was not making Jake uncomfortable by asking right then and there, but it was still rather early and the area around the two of them was rather vacant. Possibly because students were often scared off by Howard's gloomy nature. He often looked scary, even if he was a really nice guy, people just judged without knowing better. But right now he would be able to profit from the fact and Jake might feel more inclined to open up more about what was bothering him, despite being in a somewhat public space.

Alan asked if Jake was sure he wasn't hungry, and the small Hufflepuff's boy stomach felt a wave of queasiness. He wasn't hungry, but it sounded like Alan wanted him to eat, and it was like the table was listening to him, because a plate of food appeared right in front of him. Jake reached for a muffin, popped a piece into his mouth and looked up at Alan's eyes so Alan could see him do it (not unlike the face he often showed his Mum when she wanted him to eat green beans). Even if he wasn't feeling hungry, he'd eat just a little... since Alan told him to and since it wasn't the first time someone had told him that it wasn't healthy to skip (even if Alan was having chocolate for breakfast.)
Alan asked if something had happened, and Jake's eyes drifted around to see who was watching and who might be able to overhear. The table DID look kinda empty....and the Great Hall was loud. He really wished that it was just the two of them...like if they could find a private hallway...but well, it might take Alan forever to finish breakfast, and Jake's need to talk to him just felt like it couldn't wait. If he talked softly...maybe it'd be ok.
"Um no...nothing happened...I'm just....um...." Jake trailed off, hanging his head for a moment. He didn't want to say the word of what he was really feeling, because it wasn't how a captain was supposed to feel. When he said he would do the job, that meant he had to do everything that came with it, right? And Alan had just congratulated him so proudly...
"Well, um, it's just...the thing is...I...I don't really know how to be a captain..." the young Hufflepuff admitted. "And um....well you do so um...I thought maybe...maybe you could help me...?" the boy looked up anxiously into Alan's eyes for a few seconds before remembering to pop another bit of muffin into his mouth.

Alan would give a soft hum as he held his bacon and cheese sandwich aloft, as if studying it instead of thinking about Jake's important question. But if he assumed as such, he would be wrong as Alan was indeed trying to come up with a way to phrase an answer, before ultimately finding out that first he would need to have more information. Then again Jake had requested to talk about this later, but, yet again he had been the one to actually open up within the Great Hall after all and tell him what was up.
Alan was contemplating taking a bite out of his sandwich, to taste some of the crispy smoked bacon and delicious cheese, but decided against it to shift to the side, gently bumping his shoulder against Jake's. "I think you've got nothing to worry about, you seem to care about doing well and that's really what it is all about... other than that you just need to be familiar with the rules really," he explained, then finally took a big bite, closing his eyes in bliss. The food in Hogwarts was simply delicious! After he was done with chewing he would glance over at Jake once more, a gentle smile on his lips. "You know the rules right? And which spells are allowed?" Alan knew that Jake liked to worry about everything, but he believed in him and knew he had very little to worry about.
