Floating Pumpkins on the Run
@Alec Mason | October 5th
Opeila was in a rather good mood, which did happen rather often compared to last year. Her second year had been tough, often the young girl had found herself stressed out and tormented by nightmares, but she actually only had two of those since she had returned to Hogwarts. Victor's unexpected coming back to life had not thrown he back as much as she had expected or feared, instead she was quite alright now. Opeila felt like she could move on from this. While she had not thought it was possible, it seemed the capacity of the fear and horror she could endure was growing. Could it be trained like a muscle? Was it because of that that she didn't fall into horrified immobility again? Whatever it was, Opeila was thankful for it.
By now she knew that she had never really been able to take any of it. During her first year, she could still pretend to be strong, almost even make herself believe it, but the pretense game did take its toll. Once she had stopped the pretense, the panic attacks had gotten less.
Today she was just fine. No pretense, no effort to make herself feel a certain way, she just felt completely fine, almost cheerful. Maybe it was because of the Halloween feeling that slowly seemed to get to everyone in Hogwarts. It filled the corridors, the classrooms, Opeila had even caught some younger students trying to scare others with fake spiders and cobwebs.
Last year Opeila couldn't even bare to look at spiders. This year... Well, she had even helped one out of the common room. A lot had changed.
Halloween was still almost a month, but Hogwarts really did seem ready to start the feast early. In a few weeks Opeila knew there was the ball and despite the history Hogwarts balls had, she was really looking forward to this one. Maybe because she was going with someone she really felt safe with, for the first time. The third year wondered if that ball would also be Halloween themed. She hadn't quite thought about what she should wear yet.
Entering the Great Hall today was- surprise- as well as if she had entered the Halloween feast. Well, almost. There were pumpkins just about everywhere, just not in the air but on the tables. There were different faces carved into them, making Opeila chuckle, but they were not lit yet. That would probably happen soon enough- or not? Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion when the pumpkins were levitated off the tables but soon enough someone shouted to get them back down.
Almost too late Opeila realized that they were simply going to let them fall again and quickly she jumped out of the way. Grinning she walked towards the prefects. "You guys planning to kill-" The third year was interrupted by shrieking. And then she shrieked herself. Pumpkins were growing arms and legs, suddenly their faces were moving and then they ran.
Well... Opeila decided to not get a snack and instead help getting the pumpkins back. As funny as this was, she would be sad if they wouldn't get their floating pumpkins this year. Quickly the third year left the great hall and ran upstairs, where she already heard some unsettled noises.
It didn't take her long to find one- no, two pumpkins! And they apparently could also see her, quickly they turned around and ran the other way. "Oh no, you won't... Immobulus!" There was someone at the other end of the corridor, who didn't seem to see what was happening just next to him. Wait- Opeila knew that one. "Er... Mason! Can you catch that one?"

Alec had been distracted to say the least, wandering the corridors of the castle, and wondering the spaces of his mind. As expected it had been everywhere, it was frustrating when he needed to focus on thoughts of homework. If he didn't get an O he was toast. The reminder of the fact that he always had the lurking eye of elders only two steps behind him had for the most part kept him on task. He'd let go too much last year, giving himself too much ease to get around things, those elders had made it clear and the last thing he wanted was a reminder of that. Maybe as not sensible as it was, was why Alec was avoiding it at the moment. His eyes focusing on the suits of armor he could spot every so often as he passed. Something about the armor always caught his eye, perhaps it was the allure of more. Or it was really setting in the theme of stuck in a place in time. Hogwarts felt like a world away from everything else, and at times that was all Alec needed. Besides, the suits of armor were filling the part of his mind that came up with the ideas he'd been lacking of recently. Really, It was perfect, although it would have been a better brainstorming time if he'd only had his joke jar with him. It always sparked something within his mind.
His eyes wandered as his head did carefully taking in the structure of the old castle. In his head in his own world, distracted. It was a good thing, until it had come to the point where Alec wasn't paying attention to anything else. At least until he'd head his last name being called snapping him to attention. He didn't even have time to look over at the other as he noticed the pumpkin. “Yeah I got it!” Hopefully. Alec searched his pockets. He didn't have his wand. Why didn't he bring his wand?! His eyes darted back quickly at the other. He vaguely knew of her, he wanted to question what was going on, but he knew better then to ask. At a place like Hogwarts this was really something Alec should have prepared for and expected from the start, again, if he had he wouldn't have been in this position in the first place. He was really letting his guard down.
Whatever, this really wasn't that important! Uh, doing something quickly! Alec simply started going after the pumpkin, chasing it, he assumed he was strong enough to be able to at least tackle it and take it down or something. Truth be told for a normal Hogwarts thing Alec was in one of the worst situations. He was a duellist, he didn't have time to not have a wand! Spells were his go to thing.
Merlin's beard... He probably wasn't going to catch this pumpkin.
He had also realized there was a possibility he relied on magic just a bit too much.
“There's a chance I may need some help though-” Alec said quickly, trying to draw her attention. It was either he would end up having caught this guy(pumpkin) or she came before that and somehow helped.

Roll 1d100: 25 - UnsuccessfulNow what a time these students had chosen to enter the Great Hall. It was marvellous seeing the decorations being placed and planned, though, perhaps stumbling upon the two prefects wasn’t going to be too great. It was simple to see they really had very little knowledge of what was going on. And then there were pumpkins. Everywhere. But not the usual king, no these were running, skipping, rolling and giggling. Being the most obnoxious one could imagine really. They were quick to scatter through the castle, and no matter if you tried to run. You were bound to encounter one. At least Opeila and Alec were unfortunate to meet two of the enchanted vegetables.
There was little time for strategizing, and Opeila followed her instinct and turned to magic, attempting to cast immobulus on the pumpkin. It screeched and attempted a dodge, springing blindly across the corridor. As Alec tried to capture his pumpkin, he did not realize Opeilas target was now sprinting full speed towards their direction. And before any more capture attempts were made, the pumpkins ran into each other in sheer panic and distress. This must have come as quite the shock and fright for both of them, as all one could hear was a loud bang, a crack, and lots of splattering sounds echoing through the corridor.
There would be quite the process cleaning the corridors up after the two pumpkins exploded. There were stinky, slimy strings of pumpkin stuck to the walls, and the two students, as well as pumpkin seeds lightly sprinkled around. Luckily magic can be used for cleaning too, not just catching pumpkins…ReducioSadly you did not catch your pumpkins, but rather faced the fate of being too spooky for it to handle. You will still be eligible for the reward of the errand as long as the word count is met. Please do continue your thread if you wish to! Thank you for participating

Her spell, a fine casted spell was not so fine aimed. It missed the pumpkin and hit the wall instead, too bad. The other issue she noticed a little late was that her attempt to capture it apparently had got the pumpkin excited. With a screech it turned around and ran through the corridor on its little legs, towards the Gryffindor who seemed to be struggling to catch his too.
"Watch out! Her warning came too late, the two pumpkins ran into each other and... well. Exploded. Nice. Opeila found a few strings of pumpkin on herself, but it certainly hadn't hit her as badly as Alec, who had been standing close to the pumpkins. The walls were covered in pieces of pumpkin as well and there were seeds everywhere.
The Slytherin exhaled and then chuckled. "That uh... was interesting.", she commented amused. There was always something going on in Hogwarts, but pumpkins coming to life was new.
Opeila plucked the strings of pumpkin off her cloak and dropped them on the ground before she turned to Alec. She had never put her wand away, so it took her only a moment to point it at Alec and cast Scourgify.
"So...", she started, looking at the mess in the corridor, then at the cracked pumpkins. "Guess I should clean this up before anyone can slip on it."

The Gryffindor had expected to run be in such a situation today. One would think that him being a duellist, he would bring it everywhere. It was easier to be hyper-aware of dangers lurking because of him, not too mention the power of simple spells. He wasn't as surprised as he should have been about not having his wand with him. In the situation, sure, it caused for some shock. But lately he'd been forgetful. Not as mindful as he should have been, it had been a chanced fate with the likeliness of it happening having been more than he would have loved too admit. Left unprepared, with no viable tools. It wasn't the best situation. He was determined still, maybe he could tackle one? He wasn't sure how much that would help... His eyebrows furrowed. As the scene came into focus, his eyes catching onto his surroundings once more. Only then would his eyes widen, and he would instinctively back away. Spotting Opeila's pumpkin about to run into his own. The speeds the panicked thing were unstoppable, even if it could stop it wasn't going to stop in tim-
With the entrance of the loud noises as the aftermath of the collision, Alec immediately covered himself. It would be a few seconds of waiting before the dramatic scene ended. It had been too late for the boy who would now be covered in pumpkin guts. Lettings his hands fall to his sides, he would overlook the mess that had befallen him. Ah, a gentle reminder to maybe bring his wand next time! Alec's lips would slowly curl into a smile, looking up he laughed. “Oh my-” More laughter followed. He'd looked sheepishly Opeila's way, “You're not going to believe this, but as it turns out that when I said I could catch one. I was wrong.” She knew. She saw the results of where the two lacked. His tone was dramatic, he was sticking too making light of the situation. Making light of the very fact that he couldn't have done much since his wand was nowhere to be seen.
Alec's eyes would spot stringy pieces of pumpkin that she'd pull of off herself. If the remains of the pumpkins had anything to say about it, it was clear he was much closer to where it had happened than she. “Nothing better to start the month off right then pumpkin everywhere.” He said, in acknowledgement to the comment about it being interesting.
Opeila must have noticed his helplessness as she came closer casting scourgify on him. “Thanks,” Alec got in, though it was quiet. “I hadn't exactly expected there to be pumpkins on the run today.” Another day in the life of being at Hogwarts, he supposed. A better day then most, out of all the things that could have been running, he was glad it was just pumpkins. “Are you alright?” His mind was running through the possibilities of how somehow could end up hurt. The only chance being slipping on this mess. “Where-” His eyebrows would furrow once more in thought. “Where did they come from?” The running pumpkins were a curious thing, out of all the chaos causing things from Hogwarts, it would have had to have been one of the most hilarious. It felt like a prank gone wrong, that ended up with them all going loose, he wasn't sure.
“That would be wise...” Alec said, his voice quieted. “I don't have my wand, I wouldn't be as quick, but if you want I could help?” Alec would offer, he sounded unsure on whether or not she would be in need of his help. There had to be cleaning supplies around here somewhere.

Opeila had felt awkward at first, in the few moments the two third years stood in stunned silence, still processing the absurd thing that had just happened in front of them. Absurd, even for Hogwarts, at least Opeila thought so. A little unsure she looked at Alec, but then the boy started to laugh and told Opeila that he actually couldn't catch the pumpkin although he said so, making the Slytherin chuckle as well. "Really, I would have never guessed!", she went with the joke, shaking her head with amusement. Once both of them were cleaned up, Opeila looked at the mess of pumpkin around them.
"Me neither.", Opeila responded to Alec's comment that he hadn't expected pumpkins on the run, "I think they botched a spell. I watched them escape from the Great Hall." Making a few steps, she rather quickly realized that the floor was now slippery and she caught herself on the now sticky wall before she could fall. "Oh!- Ewww." Once she had regained her balance, she pulled her hand away from the wall again with a disgusted expression on her face. "Yeah, I am fine, but this is disgusting, wow." She made a fist and opened it again, shaking her head when her finger tips stuck to her palms.
"Originally from the great hall, but I think they are all around the castle now. If all of them are that hard to catch, we should be able to see soon, who ran into one." The corners of her mouth twitched at the thought.
Opeila's face lightened up a bit when Alec offered to help her cleaning up. "Are you sure? I mean, if you have time, that would be really cool, but I don't want to hold you back here.", she said.
