Brumby's Desk

The school year was drawing to a close, only so long before all the kids would either shuffle off back home or wherever else their lives took them when they weren't in boarding school. When he was their age, it had been hard to be away from home for so long, especially given how much culture shock he had to endure on a day-to-day basis. It showed-- so many kids that came to the hospital wing weren't looking for a fixed sprain or a potion for a cold. There were a lot of... emotional issues, something he was never trained for. It wasn't like he studied child psychology in a muggle college, he was just some guy from a swamp who was good at making potions!

Regardless, he was there to talk to, and he did have that free hugs sign up for the kids who needed it. It seemed like a lot of these kids needed a hug. That day in particular, Kels was packing away potions that needed to be stored in the potion's storeroom over summer, ones that really shouldn't be kept out in the open anyway but needed to be around for quick access in an emergency. A scrawny pale kid approached the desk, calling for his attention quietly, not really looking like he was wounded or anything. Looks could be deceiving though.

"What's the word, lil' bird?" He'd ask, setting down the box he was piling flasks into, giving him his full attention.

Pajarito(little bird) hmm. I do not even have the faintest recollection, Mr.Brumby, of the last time I have felt such turmoil. It’s always been drummed into me by life’s circumstances that caring isn’t an advantage, that cold rationality stands a far better chance than emotions. Yet here I stand, trembling. Haha,” Tristan laughed almost hysterically, his voice shaking. “I do not perceive I can do this anymore, Mr. Brumby, how can the masses stand this emotion, the pain? It is much easier to suppress it all under a lie, until the lie becomes the truth. To not feel is better than this pain.” It was a ramble, perhaps far too advanced for most twelve year olds but Tristan was not most twelve year olds. No, he was a twelve year old who found that Grindelwald would be a far better companion than most. He was also a twelve year old who had had death thrown in his face far more than, he admitted, was normal. His intelligence was far greater than most’s and even still Tristan was burdened with being a Parselmouth. “I apologize, I am rambling. There must be some way to grieve without this looming over me.” Tristan said as a visible change came over him as he slipped back into persona. He had a smile on his face but pain was still in his eyes, obvious to anyone who can see him. “Without this Zugzwang of grieving and being unable to think or to think but yet not feel.

Kels moved from his packing to his chair in front of the desk, sitting down heavily and realizing how much his arms hurt. His face scrunched up nearly to a singularity as the squeaker squeaked, talking like a villain from a Saturday morning cartoon. It reminded him a bit of how Leo talked, but at least with Leo he seemed to have a main point he could follow. This kid was talking about turmoil and pain, but like he was soliloquizing to an audience in a stage play. What exactly did he think a school nurse was going to do about it?

"Whuh?" He'd say briefly when it seemed the kid was looking for a response, though he continued on anyway, saying he was rambling.

As he went forward with more random words that essentially repeated the same sentiment, Kels cleared his throat, scratching at his stubble dumbfoundedly. Was he being pranked or something? The kid looked serious, but last he checked, little kids weren't soap opera stars aching through the lambasting travails of endless torture. Maybe this kid had just read too many romance novels recently and fancied himself a Byronic hero of tragedy. He'd met a few kids like that in his own time, though it looked like this kid was drinking his own kool-aid.

"Sooo... let me get this right..." Kels twitched his nose as he thought, the blatant confusion starting to melt away. "Yer grieving about something, but you think y'shouldn't? Help me out here, what is the problem that needs a solution? Do'ya got physical pain?"

“I am so very sorry. I was certain you wouldn’t believe all the nonsense I said. I am just here because I am in pain, not emotional, just a little stomach ache that hasn’t disappeared for a couple of hours.” Tristan suddenly changed his demeanour. He smiled and grimaced a little, pretending to be embarrassed. “My Shakespearean talk was just for fun. I had done theatre when I was younger.
He winced on the inside when he said this, it sounded so idiotic. Tristan held himself in high regard, and all his acquaintances in Slytherin seemed to understand his speech and even responded back in common manners. Instead he had to demean himself to speak commonly. He shudders at that thought.
Would you forgive me? Mr.Brumby?
Tristan was certain he would be able to open up for once. Unfortunately, it seemed fate would never let him. Well, he had his acquaintances and partners in Slytherin, they would have to do. He would just have to play this off as a cruel trick or some form of the sort. He did of course have an ache of some sort in his lower stomach, and it was persisting. However, that wasn’t why he came here. But it was better than admitting that yes the pain of healing was far more scathing to him.

Brumby continued to listen, the kid backpedaling for some reason. This happened every once in a while, kids would start talking to him and he would just have absolutely no idea why they had come to him in the first place. It occurred to him that partially it could have something to do with him being an adult, and therefore someone they thought they could talk to like their parents, but he was not equipped for that. He was a potioneer, a healer. The school had put out job listings for that, not a babysitter. He could learn to speak outlandish languages like parseltongue, but it did not make him any better at understanding people. If anything, he did it to get closer to snakes.

"Okie dokie." He said, shrugging. It seemed wild to him that anyone on earth would want to watch a Shakespeare play with toddlers in it, but it was also kinda funny to imagine. Itty bitty Julius Caesar. Haughty lines read with baby lisps. Maybe the kid was trying to be funny? "Don't know whatcha need forgiveness for. I'll jes' give ya medicine instead."

With that, he moved over to his muggle medicine drawer, pulling out a bright pink bottle and a portion cup into which he poured the amount needed for a single serving. He would scoot it over to him on the desk like a bartender serving the finest ale.

"Yon bismuth subsalicylate, young bard!" Kels put on a 'Shakespearean voice', which was cartoonish at best. "And remember! 'The miserable have no other medicine, but only hope'."

A pink haired girl scurried down the hall in an urgent manner. A purple knitted sleeve held against her nose as she ran as fast her short legs would take her. She had been playing outside, like usual. Except she got a bit crazy. She had gone from doing cartwheels to climbing trees. From that, she had gone as high as she could, resulting in a fall. Unfortunately, her landing was awkward and painful. As she fell, her leg caught on a branch, slowing her down. However, she fell again and her foot hit the ground first. Her head slammed into her knee.

She hadn't cried. No, she had laughed. It was hilarious! She had done all these flips as she fell, hitting branch to branch. Her bruises and scrapes only served as trophies of her amazing fall. However, droplets of blood came to her attention as she looked at her purple sweater. Her first thought was that her sweater was ruined. Then she realized her nose was bleeding. Alot. Ouch.

So now she was rushing to the nurse with her arm to her nose. She had no medical training at all, and she only knew how to apply bandaids. She wasn't sure a hello kitty bandaid would fix this. She didn't know how to stop the blood either.

Bursting through the door, she walked over to his desk. A sign read that there were free hugs. Nice. Maybe another time. "Um, sir? I- I fell from a tree and my nose hit my knee when I hit the ground..." She brought down her arm to reveal the nose bleed.

It was not the most uncommon thing in the world for someone to run in the wing with a broken something-or-other. In fact, it seemed children's proneness to doing dumb stunts and failing miserably had changed over the decades. He himself was a frequenter of the very same wing he was in charge of now. What was the point of having legs and arms anyway, if not to venture forth to discovery. Sometimes that discovery led to a sudden cliff, or a cave-in, things do happen.

He wouldn't flinch to see the mini-mangler, bleeding and bent as it were. After the flap of her shoes heralded the arrival of an urgent case, Kels turned to look, having just been watching over one of the interns practicing a spell. The other two also grew quiet as the pink hair couldn't help but draw at least some attention. That's what bright colors were for, like with poisonous frogs. By the time she stopped long enough to look at, the situation was fairly simple to assess, and her words gave a simple story.

"Yo, that sounds painful." Kels would shake his head, a sympathetically nostalgic tone of voice. "One sec."

The intern would return to what they were doing, interruptions like this weren't uncommon. Magic healed things so quickly that most of the cases they got were just a matter of a simple spell. With potions, inventory had to be kept very strictly, and each ingredient accounted for and properly put away. With spells, Kels had cast them so many times, so many ways, in so many places, on so many faces. He would draw his wand, making a perfect circle in front of her nose, "Episkey."

In no time, the nose would be fixed, the blood flow stopped, and the pain soothed. With the job done, he was not in the position to ask how it had happened or to tell her not to behave recklessly. Kids were kids, they should be making a few mistakes and testing their limits. He would follow-up the healing by poking her nose with the tip of the wand, blowing a raspberry as he did so.

After her explanation that was not needed, the nurse took a look at her nose. She didn't know what he would do, because at muggle school all the nurses did was give you ice. The nurse noted that it looked painful, and Juni nodded. "It was! But I didn't cry it happened all super fast." She clarified proudly. She was sort of like a little kid, proud for not crying when she got hurt. The nurse told her to wait for a second, and he got his wand.

Juni looked at him curiously as he pointed his wand at her bleeding nose. She watched as he made a circle with his wand and said... some word. Clearly a spell. She was startled as the spell hit and gasped. No way! She felt her nose. No pain. No blood. She looked at the nurse in awe, giggling as he touched her nose with his wand. "How- how did you do that?" She asked. She had always been interested in spell casting.

"Is that an advanced spell? Usually, at my muggle school, the nurses just give you ice." She spoke honestly and curiously. She's never spoken to the school nurse before this, either. She looked around the area. "I'm Juniper... I think you're really cool." She said, straight-up. That was Juni for you.

It was funny, even after being at Hogwarts for as long as he had, it still took him by surprise when he became the first person to show someone healing magic. The awe on their face as they imagined the possibilities was a treat to watch. Nobody likes being in pain, and here was a get-out-of-pain card in a convenient wand package. She would touch her nose unbelievingly, and start buzzing away at questions. These, he was getting used to. "It's nothin' you won't learn in a few years." He said, sniping in an answer as she asked if it was advanced. "My mum was kinda my school nurse, she woulda given me something like plantain juice and rose oil."

Then she called him 'really cool', which would earn a pulled back face of incredulity. Yeah 'cool', that was the right word, sure. "Hi Juniper. If y'think I'm cool, you should check out my frog." Kels would lean back in his chair and throw a thumb over his shoulder at the comfy wet habitat she was currently sitting perfectly still in. "Try not t'look too star struck, she's the primadonna of the frog choir."

A lie, in that the frog choir did not have any primadonnas.
