Roleplaying as iNPC Celeste Leblanc
Celeste Leblanc had always had a habit of waking up before everyone else - and, quite often, of going to sleep after them too, so that nobody ever saw her sleeping or were even sure if she did ever sleep. Celeste dismissed these claims as nonsense - of course she slept, everyone sleeps - but it was hard to imagine her ever sleeping. Ever. Secretly, Celeste enjoyed these rumours, and it was one she was perfectly happy to keep going while she was at Hogwarts. So, it was with this in mind that she had woken up even earlier than she might otherwise have done, at 5am, to go and sit by Hogwarts' Great Lake.

Celeste had slipped quickly out of bed and into her dress - a very short dress completely unsuitable for the time of year, but being permanently cold was, in Celeste's opinion, a character trait, and what was the point of wrapping up warm when you could be elegantly suffering, harsh winds whipping against your bare arms? In these moments all the forces of nature worked a ferocious battle against Celeste's body, determined to knock her off her feet, determined to break her down, yet she could stand against it. Wind would tear through her hair and smack against her face, yet who was she to surrender to the earth? Celeste would feel like a god: omniscient, all-powerful, ready to withstand anything. She felt truly on top of the world; in utmost control of her senses. In a way, it was a kind of meditation for Celeste. These were the types of days she liked best.

This, however, was not one of those days - in fact, the wind was eerily still - but it was still bitingly cold, and goosebumps covered Celeste's bare arms and legs. She had already circled the lake once, and it was now nearly six am. Elegantly, Celeste sat down by the edge of the lake to think.

Thinking was something that Celeste spent a lot of time doing. She enjoyed nothing better than to ponder life's deepest questions, and spent a lot of time musing and reflecting on the metaphorical resonances of pretty much everything in the world around her. Celeste drank in information not only with her eyes and her senses, but with something that lay beyond the eyes and the senses - Celeste drank in the world with her soul. The Beauxbatons student found that the Hogwarts lake was a beautiful place to let her mind wander - although she preferred it in the winter - and there was no similar place at Beauxbatons. There were a few serene locations within the grounds of her own house, le Château del Cristal, but she had already explored these countless times and besides, there was something magical hanging in the air in Hogwarts - something which, to Celeste's irritation, she couldn't quite place her finger on. There were multiple places in the Muggle world in which Celeste would have loved to sit and drink in information for hours, but they were infested with Muggles, and Celeste tried to avoid her inferiors at all costs.

In short, Celeste loved to sit by Hogwarts' Great Lake, and she always found something new and magical here every time she revisited. The thirteen-year-old sat perfectly still and cross-legged by the surface of the water, watching the ripples glide across its glassy surface. Celeste caught a swathe of orange leaves drift over her reflection, and the girl smiled. In the water, she could see the wind tossing her hair behind her: she looked wild, ever-ready, yet elegant, expressive, perfectly poised. Just how she imagined herself, in her mind's eye. She was perfectly at peace with herself, and she could feel her brain submerging into a state of deep meditation. She had an hour before the rest of the school would begin to wake up: it was time for Celeste to make the most of the nature she had been provided with.

Valentin was surprised he had managed to sleep at all, he wasn't expecting to. The thought of camping had never brought a smile to his face in the past and was relieved that it wasn't something his parents had ever suggested they do. Whilst the cabins that the hosting school had provided for them weren't exactly tents in the middle of the woods, there were to Val, the next closest thing, and that was enough for him to turn his nose up at them.

Like clockwork, he awoke not long after the sunrise, he had gotten into the habit over the last year or so of waking up early and going for a run, this early time came with the added bonus that he rarely ever saw anyone else whilst out on his runs.

When he woke up this morning, he debated going back to sleep, but figured now might be the best time to explore his temporary home, whilst the others were asleep. He pulled his navy hoodie over his head and slipped into his trainers before heading out into the crisp October air.

Val took a deep breath out, the white condensation lingering a while in front of his face. Val liked the cold, or at least he found it suited the things he chose to do outside best, he would without question, choose a cold morning over a warm, humid one. Whether the icy temperatures were hardening the once soft ground to make for a better run, or pushing him to practise harder during Quidditch sessions to heat up, he found it always to be of benefit.

He cast his eyes over the grounds that surrounded the cabins, pausing at what he made out to be a Quidditch pitch in the distance, 'somewhere to practise,' he thought, making a mental note to take out his broom at some point over the next two weeks. It wasn't until he caught sight of a figure sat near the lake that his legs began to move once more.

A slight grin began to appear on his face as he edged closer to the body of water, he was still a good distance away, enough not to have alerted the student to his presence, though enough for Val to recognise his fellow Beauxbaton. The girl's long, almost silvery hair, was matched by her pale skin, if Val hadn't immediately taken a dislike to the girl, he might have thought her to be quite pretty. Now though, his eyes shot to the short dress she was wearing, maybe she had finally lost it, he wouldn't be surprised, from the moment they had met back in Beauxbatons, there had been something that hadn't sat well with him about her.

Val walked in the direction of the lake, such that by the time he had come to a stop he was stood about ten meters away from her along the bank of the lake, the girl was looking out across the water and he didn't think she was aware of him yet. He better change that.

"I didn't realise we had to wear our fall ball outfits from now Celeste!" he called out to the girl, taking a few strides closer to save his voice, "if you want my opinion, I think you missed the theme quite a bit with that though," he continued as he looked up and down at the dress. "But you know me, always here to give you any tips, you just say the word," he said sarcastically, content in the fact that he would watch happily as she embarrassed herself in front of all the other schools.

Unfortunately for Celeste, her peace only lasted for a couple of minutes. In the silence, it was relatively easy for Celeste to sense that there was somebody behind her - people, even when being quiet, were incredibly noisy, Celeste had noticed - but, whoever it was, Celeste knew to ignore them. She wasn't the sort to get mad at someone unprovoked, and if they didn't disturb her peace, then she wouldn't disturb theirs. Who knew: maybe the person behind her would be a mirror of herself, and they could sit side by side staring wistfully into the lake, forming an unbreakable bond through their shared silence. Though the second-year was perfectly happy being alone, at times she did long for a friend by her side. Unfortunately, real friends were incredibly difficult to come across. To be friends with Celeste, you had to have no defects.

Lots of people said Celeste was mean, but personally, she disagreed with this. She wasn't mean, she just liked to keep to herself. If she had nothing to say, she wouldn't say it. She wasn't mean, she was upfront. And sometimes being upfront meant saying nothing at all.

Celeste could sense that the person behind her had stopped moving - that meant that they were probably going to speak to her. She took a deep breath. "I didn't realise we had to wear our fall ball outfits from now, Celeste!" said the voice, in French. Celeste recognised the voice: it was Valentin Everbone, a fellow second-year from her school. It was fair to say that the two had a relatively troubled history, and they had never quite seen eye to eye - or, more accurately, Celeste had never done anything to offend Valentin yet he still seemed intent on ruining her life in every way possible - or at least, that was how Celeste viewed it. "If you want my opinion, I think you missed the theme quite a bit with that though. But you know me, always here to give you tips, just say the word!"
"Valentin Everbone," drawled Celeste, without turning round, "I wouldn't be taking tips from you if you were the last person alive." She paused, wondering whether or not to carry on. "As you very well know, this is not my fall ball dress," she continued, spitting the words 'fall ball' in English, prolonging the words to prove how much she detested the rhyme. "My fall ball dress, you will find, is incredibly seasonal and far more glamorous than this. However, my sitting at the lake now is in no way a seasonal event, and therefore I do not feel in any way inclined to dress accordingly. I will dress according to my inner season," she added, pretentiously, "which is, and always has been, very certainly, winter." She smiled smugly, still without turning round. "Is that enough explanation for you, Everbone?"

It's not like Valentin headed out of the cabin intent on bothering anyone, no, he had actually been kind of disappointed to see another figure out for a morning stroll, well that was until who realised who he had stumbled across. When he thought about it, he couldn't quite pin point the exact moment he began to dislike Celeste, when he really thought about it, he couldn't really think why, but he did and he was pretty sure the feeling was mutual, not that he minded.

"Well, I'm always around to give them all the same," he said in response to the girl, "and I'd think there would be far worse people to give out advice," he said, Valentin easily able to name a few off the top of his head, "and you know, I'll always be honest with you." Of course people didn't always like to hear the truth, but that was no fault of his, and Valentin would rather keep quiet than tell people what they would like to hear for the sake of maintaining a good rapport.

"Well I don't know," he said jokingly, "for all I know you could be testing how it fits before the actual fall ball," he added, mimicking the way she had said the English words. He dipped his hands into his pockets, allowing them to rest on the fabric within, "I'm personally considering this for my own outfit," he said whilst swaying gently back and forth on his heels. "What do you think? I wasn't quite show if it showed to much flesh," he said with a grin as he directed his calf towards the girl.

Valentin nodded whilst smiling at the girl, at the mention of her 'inner season,' faking an interest in what she was saying, "ahhh, makes complete sense," he said, replying to the girl's final question, "you know I really don't think I considered my own inner season enough when I chose my outfit," he said, looking down out the shorts and hoodie he had thrown on. "Since you don't want to receive them, want to give me some tips instead?" he asked, "I've always fancied myself a fall kind of person, fitting I guess, got any suggestions for how I could switch up my outfit."

Valentin looked himself over in front of the girl, moving about as if in front of mirror, trying to see different angles of himself, "maybe the odd leaf here and there, you know really embrace my season," he said, feeling pretty proud of himself for holding a straight face as he did.

Celeste glowered venomously at Valentin as he responded to her, raising a cocky eyebrow as he pretended that that was what he was wearing to the Fall Ball - but otherwise, saying nothing. Or at least, she hoped he was only pretending, in his rumpled up navy hoodie and untucked T-shirt. She wouldn't be seen dead wearing that - in all honesty, she wouldn't like to be seen dead standing next to someone wearing that, especially not at a ball. Nevertheless, she said nothing, just watched with sarcastic derision as he questioned whether wearing his shorts would be showing too much flesh. No, it's perfectly fine, Celeste wanted to say, as long as you shave your legs first. Better get going, it'll take you up until then to get it all off. She didn't say that, however. I'll just humour him a little longer, she thought.

Celeste knew that Valentin was mocking her when he made remarks about his own 'inner season', but the girl felt that, at this point, she didn't care much at all. People who mocked her just didn't see things from the same angle as she did, and how could she ask them to? There were very few people, in Celeste's opinion, who were blessed with the same sight as she was. She could already see that the season Valentin embodied the most was summer - the month Celeste detested - but if he chose to see otherwise, he chose to see otherwise. That was fine. It was amusing to Celeste to watch him spouting nonsense about himself with full confidence that it was right, and she wasn't going to interrupt the spectacle by correcting him. It would be like Celeste's little inside joke between herself and herself. Those were the best kinds of inside jokes, the ones that were truly inside, that could summon up a smirk in the mirror and not much more.

"Since you don't want to receive them, want to give me some tips instead?" Valentin asked. "I've always fancied myself a fall kind of person, fitting I guess, got any suggestions for how I can switch up my outfit?" He mimed checking out his different angles in a nonexistent mirror. "Maybe the odd leaf here or there, you know," he continued. "Really embrace my inner season."
"Well," replied Celeste, "I know full well that you are mocking me, but I won't miss the opportunity to indulge you in the advice you so desperately need. First of all..." Celeste rattled off on a long description of all the things Valentin would somehow need to acquire by the end of the week, reeling of a list of incredibly expensive brands she knew the vast majority of people would never be able to afford. "And you should probably get a variety of options, too," she said, "so you could try them all on and see which suited you the most. But, oh well, it seems you don't have time for that any more. Isn't hindsight a glorious thing? In your case, I think all you can do to save yourself is drench yourself in your best cloak and maybe adorn your hair with some autumn leaves," she said, matter-of-factly. "And if you are going to wear those shorts, which I pray to Merlin you won't, then for the love of all things holy shave your legs first." She didn't say the thing about it taking all week, though she desperately wanted to.

Despite attending the same school as Celeste, Valentin didn't think he remembered having this long a conversation with her before. Sure, it became pretty normal for him to slide in a passing comment when he saw her throughout the school, and of course she would react in a very 'Celeste' way.

Putting aside the jokes he made about his own fall ball outfit, he was actually very prepared for the event, choosing something suitable for the evening had been one of the very first things he had done on deciding that he would be attending. None of the suits he owned he felt lived up to what he wanted to present at the fall ball, so some shopping was necessary, the result of which being that he in fact had brought two new suits with him for the trip. He had yet to decide on a winner between the two, but figured it would come down to a last minute decision.

'Desperately'?! What did she mean by that, she may not know it, but he had risen far above needing advice from the majority of people, especially those his own age, but he was also interested what wisdom she felt she could impart on him, so he nodded along enthusiastically. He was surprised, she knew her stuff, from long list of fashion brands, he was both a fan, and the owner of a few of their pieces, he put it down to a shared culture.

He smiled at what she said next, he was ahead of the class it seemed, he wanted to interject and tell her that he was already prepared with multiple options for the ball, but that was no fun, "hmm, sound advice, I'm guessing you probably have a long list of people that you need to pass on these shards of wisdom to, so don't have to time to go through some options with me." He shot her an exaggerated look of disappointment at the suggestion of him wearing a cloak, "I didn't think you'd give up on me that quickly," he said, "but I think I would look good in whatever I wore, and I guess something a little out of the ordinary would only draw more attention to me."

Val quickly brushed his hand along his leg, his attention shifted to his leg, "what a chore!" he joked, it wasn't really anything he had found he needed to do in the past, nor had he ever been tempted to try it before, "maybe I'll give the shorts a pass then."

With the whole discussion shifted towards the fall ball, he began to wonder about something else, whether or not it was something Celeste would even entertain a discussion about remained to be seen, but if she was anything like he thought she was, she would, just to show off that she had everything figured out. "On the whole fall ball subject," he began, "have you managed to rope anyone into escorting you?" He could imagine someone like Celeste being the one doing the asking, but he had no idea if she was already in some kind of relationship, "Don't get over-excited though, this isn't me asking you if you wanted to go with me," he quickly pointed out, smiling at her, "call it me being nosy, want to see if you have everything all planned out already."
