Arden had always been more sporty than anything else. He liked the feel on the sun on his skin, the burn of his lungs as he ran around, not to mention how exhilarating it was to land a tackle or score points. His height and natural talents made him a natural pick for the starting line up in junior rugby back home and he leaned right into it with everything he had. It was only natural that once he found out he was a wizard, or even what wizards were, that he would start looking into the kinds of sport Wizards played and he was very interested in Quidditch once he found out about it. He spent most of his first year watching quidditch practice, and matches and even tried his own hand at some things during flying class and he found himself developing a real taste for it. Imagine his pride when he managed to make it onto the Gryffindor team now that he was a second year? His obsession with being the best quickly had him practicing and training both with the team and by himself to make sure he was up to snuff as it were.

However, as sporty and active he liked to be he also needed to focus on other things. Namely his studies. While his competitive nature thrived in sports it also existed elsewhere and he needed to make sure he did the best he could in all his classes, not only for his own satisfaction but to make sure he made his dad proud. So it was only natural that on this particular rainy day Arden found himself in the library trying to catch up on some reading he had been putting off. His aged leather messenger bag sat on the ground next to him, showing off pins for both the irish rugby and quidditch teams, his shoulder length red hair hung loosely as he poured over one of the 6 books he had around himself. The rugby Jersey he was wearing under his green canvas coat was enough of a indication he was into sports if his bag or general build and usual hobbies didn't give it away.

With a sigh he ran a hand through his hair and looked outside at the rain, lingering for a moment before he nods at nobody and leans back in his chair and starts reading once again, after all. what else was there to do in a library?

It was pouring. Again. Jean stared out the window, an impassive look in her eyes as she watched the rain drops fall onto the thin glass window and race down to the bottom. She saw her reflection in the window, her hair was down, her shirt out of her trousers and had put her tie on as well as she could, not knowing how to. Class was over and she was looking towards going outside and explore the grounds. Of course, her plans had been canceled. She could go back to her common room, but she just knew it would be full of students gathering up around the glowing fireplace.

She wanted some calm. Her bag on her shoulder, she made her way up some stairs, through some corridors, past a few classrooms until she was completely lost. Perhaps she'd miraculously find a nice place to spend the rest of her afternoon. Walking a little more, she found herself standing in front of the library.

Shrugging, she pushed the doors and felt some warmth caressing her face. Maybe libraries weren't that bad after all. Easily, she found an empty table and plopped her leather bag on the floor before sitting down and crossing her arms. Now what ? She hesitated for a second, and told herself she might as well get started on her homework as it was slowly piling up. Reaching in her bag, she noticed, a few feet away, a bag very similar to her own. Her eyebrows knotted, she realised there were pins, one of which she recognized as being muggle. The corner of her lips lifted, it felt nice to see others showing signs of the muggle world.

Tilting her head up, she saw the bag belonged to a red-headed boy, and judging by his appearance she wouldn't be surprised if he played some quidditch here. Books were piled up on his table, poor guy must've been deep in his studies, how boring.

Not thinking again, she rose from her chair and made her way towards the boy. He seemed like an interesting character.

'Are you actually gonna read all of those books ?' she said, almost looking concerned, her eyebrows lifted.

Arden was deep in his thoughts as he read this particular book. It was titled "Magical Me", and it seemed to follow the adventures of a skilled wizard by the name of Gilderoy Lockheart. The tone was all over the place, one moment talking about dark wizards or monsters he defeated by himself or other such adventures, and the next moment talking about his favorite color...which apparently was Lilac. Why did he need to know that?

He was so deep in his own mind while he was reading he didn't notice when another student approached him so when they spoke, shattering the silence he had been in for long the gryffindor jumped a bit and knocked over one of his stacks of books. a sharp breath followed as he tried to minimize the mess and he looked around for the librarian before his eyes fell on Jean and he blushed alittle, embarrassed at the display.

"Huh? Read all what now?" he cleared his throat and sat straighter and looked at his books before looking back towards the other student. "right, yeah. Sorry you caught me off guard there...in my own world. I figure I have about 10 years to catch up on so I have alot of reading to do so I don't fall behind."

Arden chuckled and ran a hand through his long red hair and he offered a hand to Shake "Doherty. Arden Doherty, I dont think ive had the pleasure? least I hope I didnt forget meeting you"

The boy obviously hadn’t been aware of Jean walking up to him, looking quite startled. His reaction had caused a pile of books to collapse around him before vainly trying make this go unnoticed. A grin appeared on the girl’s face as she watched him, wondering if she should feel sorry for halting this ostensibly interesting readings.

‘Huh? Read all what now ?’ He asked, clearing his throat and looking towards her ‘Right, yeah. Sorry you caught me off guard there… in my own world. I figure I have about 10 years to catch up on so I have a lot of reading so I don’t fall behind’

Jean tilted her to catch a glimpse of the book that the boy mesmerised by. ‘Magical Me’. Seemed boring. She lifted her gaze towards the boy and noticed he held his hand out, probably expecting Jean to shake it. What an odd thing to do, she had only seen adults shake hands but it seemed quite commonplace here for kids her age. ‘Doherty. Arden Doherty, I don’t think I’ve had the pleasure ? Least I hope I didn’t forget meeting you.’

His accent caught her attention, she had never something relatively close to this but she liked the sound of it. Jean held her hand out to meet his, shaking it softly. ‘I’m Jean Edevane. And no, I can confirm we haven’t met before, I haven’t spoken to many people.’

Sighing, she realised the boy might want to get back to his learning. Once again, she had acted before thinking and there she was, bothering people in the library.

‘I should apologise. I was just bored out of my mind and I recognised your Rugby pin. You seem like a nice guy.’ Jean said, looking at the boy, the corners of her lips lifted in a small smile. ‘Your book does look quite unexciting if I have to be honest. Good luck getting back into it.’

Jean looked out the window again, but the rain was still taping on the windows, melodically chiming in to the crackling sounds of the chimney. She couldn’t quite understand how some people found the motivation to study for hours on end, she couldn’t even gather enough to persuade herself to do her homework.

She smiled one last time before heading back to her table, not knowing what to do now since going up to people to speak didn’t seem like much of a good idea now. Although she had to admit that speaking to the boy made her wish she had made a few friends to study with during afternoons like these.

Arden watched the girl turn and go to leave and frowned slightly. Did he do or say something wrong? Usually he blathered on for a bit before chasing people off, he must be off his game. He slipped a book mark into Magical Me, after all dog ears were for monsters and dark wizards, and he scooped up that, a book about dark arts, and a compendium of mystical arcanum which was gibberish to him but surely to be filled with something interesting.

He followed the girl to her table and sat down, setting down his messenger bag and the books he was carrying. “Alright so, if you recognized my rugby pins does that mean you came from a normal family?” he stopped and kinda chastised himself under his breath “muggle, not normal sorry. I keep doing that, I’m new to this whole wizard world stuff”

He looks down at this bag and back to Jean “Mother was a muggle, dad is a wizard but he didn’t tell me until I got my letter. Kind of dumb when it comes to this stuff embarrassingly enough. Sorry I offended or anything like that” back in the muggle world he was pretty good at making friends, but since coming here he was more withdrawn so he hadn’t made any friends yet. He should probably fix that.

Jean sat back down, unaware that the boy was making his way towards her. Hearing footsteps, she turned her head only to see Arden sitting at her table, leaving her quite surprised. Her eyebrows were raised, the girl wondering why people at this school tended to be far more friendly than back home.

‘Alright so, if you recognized my rugby pins does that mean you come from a normal family ?’ Arden asked before quickly adding ‘muggle, not normal sorry. I keep doing that, I’m new to this whole wizard world stuff’.

The boy looked down at his bag and back up at her. He seemed like such a genuine person, and having someone to talk to felt rather lovely, it truly lifted her mood.

‘Mother was a Muggle, dad is a wizard but he didn’t tell me until I got my letter. Kind of dumb when it comes to this stuff embarrassingly enough. Sorry I offended or anything like that.’

Jean chuckled quietly, knowing what he meant. ‘Yeah, I am. I am from a muggle family, they seem like the normal people to me too’ she said nodding.

Much to her surprise, their stories seemed relatively similar. ‘That’s funny, my mom is a Muggle and my dad is a wizard too. They’re separated, I’ve lived without magic my whole life and always thought my dad was just making up a few stories about dragons and magical schools all along. Turns out he wasn’t.’ She added, shrugging and lifting her eyebrows slightly. ‘You didn’t offend me at all, you looked busy with all those books, thought I might leave you to your amazing reads. I’m not complaining talking now to be honest.’

Finding someone to talk about muggles and ‘normal people’ felt nice. Almost everyone here seemed to know about magic and it felt somewhat frustrating to find this all overwhelming. At least she knew there were others feeling just as lost as she was.

‘You got quidditch pins. Looking at you I figured you played on the Gryffindor team, am I wrong?' She asked as she looked at him.

He perked up a bit, taking on his own smile as she explained she also had a muggle mother and a Wizard father. Perhaps something about non magical women was alluring to wizards? He would definitely need to look into that some time, maybe grill his dad over break or something.

”my parents aren’t separated so much as my mom got sick and uh…” his smile faltered and he absentmindedly placed his hand on his messenger bag “any way dad never talked about magic or anything like that until I got my letter. Keeping it all a secret was my moms idea and dad didn’t mind it”

When she pointed out the quidditch pins his smile returned and he nodded “yeah back before settling down my dad played quidditch for the Kestrals, so since I’ve always liked rugby I figured why not give quidditch a crack. My first year was mostly learning the game and watching quidditch matches but this year I made the team. I’m a forward, sorry no wrong sport…Chaser! Second string though so warm the bench unless someone falls off their broom”

He leaned forward, and laced his fingers together before he looked towards Jean with interest “I could drone on all day if you let me, what do you get up to hobby wise? I brought my DS with me but apparently magic frazzles technology.” he chuckles a bit at that

Jean listened attentively to what Arden had to say, feeling a hint of melancholy when he paused after mentioning his mother. Although she was curious to learn more, she didn’t ask any questions, by fear of seeming a little nosy. She found it quite bizarre for a wizard to keep magic a secret to his son who would, most probably, find out anyway, but he surely had his reasons.

Talking about quidditch seemed to bring quite some joy to the boy as Jean tried to imagine what being on a broom felt like. She felt like it would feel liberating, like a bird soaring through the sky, being able to feel the wind on your face, flying away from everything. Quidditch itself would probably be amusing, perhaps she should go and watch the next game.

‘Being on the team is amazing, second string or not. Congrats for making it.’ She said, a content expression on her face.

The boy then asked what Jean did on her free time, while also mentioning a DS. Some of her friends had one and the memories of afternoons spent playing resurfaced.

‘Yeah I brought my iPod here too, and it wasn’t a great surprise when I found out it didn’t work … As for hobbies, I used to play some football at my school, but only bec- never mind.’ She said grinning, not sure she wanted to admit she joined only because her crush did. ‘I liked being active, not staying inside all day, that’s boring. I’d play with my sister a lot, just running around parks, playing tag or catch, you know. I would’ve loved it so much if she were here, but she’s not a witch. She’s what I believe people here call a squib ?’

Jean stopped a little, envisaging what the school year with her here would’ve been like. She looked out the window and noticed the rain was a lot lighter now, although the tapping on the window could still be heard. Not really thinking before speaking, Jean asked the boy a question.

‘It’s not raining as heavily now, wanna go outside ? I haven’t visited much of the grounds yet.’ She said, her head in her hand, staring out the window.

Maybe she could finally try and find her way around, hopefully the boy wasn’t as lost as her.
