Don't Lose Your Head!

He was struggling just to maintain balance on the broom, but at least he had a handful of Maggie's robes. He never knew that robes could ever be so useful, until she jerked back from the force of his pull when he almost toppled over. He almost lost his balance again. "Oh, god, Avery! Calm down, man, you're gonna carry me off, too! I got it, Ming, hold your horses." What? Did she just say 'Ming'? He whipped his head around until he spotted the bespectacled boy, who seemed like he had arrived after a sprint. "Oh Ming, thank goodness you're here!" he called, suddenly feeling as if everything would be okay. Ming will definitely whip everyone into shape to help him get down. Before he whipped Avery for flying so brazenly, that is.
"Well, I would like to help you," Cash said, reaching out their hand. Avery lunged for it with his free hand, but they evilly snatched it back and he swore under his breath. "If you managed to fly up then you surely have idea how to come down, don't you?" He would drag Maggie backwards again, as he missed Cash's hand mid-lunge and caught the broom handle just in time. "That's totally different!" he protested. "It's like, it's so easy to dive into a lava pit, but it's so hard to get back out!" Yes, it seemed like he was slowly dying in a lava pit right this second.
Maggie tried to reassure the upperclassman that they were more composed than they seemed, but were they really? "Really, Maggie? You think so?" Had they ever been composed together in any of their study sessions? This group only seemed to know how to cause drama and trouble. Avery was quite maniacal at this point, and really had no sense of propriety and no filter in front of his seniors.
Finally, his hand met Maggie's, and she tugged him out of the air, down the rock, and onto the ground below. He landed in a heap on the gravel or sand or whatever it was, never so glad to be sprawled on the ground. Maybe he should just lay there for a second to enjoy every inch of his body having the sheer luck of touching the ground. "Thank you, Maggie. You're a savior," he panted, taking a rest, face up and admiring the gloomy clouds above. "No thanks to the person who has actually flown in quidditch matches," he retorted. Who did they think they were, just standing there laughing as he almost lost a leg?

Ming did not know what he had expected off the senior, really. Perhaps some common sense. But no, what he got was just another typical adult in this world. Selfish, uncaring of their duties to those around them, and wholly enveloped in their own little wants and needs.
"Tsk," The bespectacled boy tuned out the senior, to call out to his rambunctious and overeager friend. "Avery."
Ming did not like this. He had no plan, and no idea how to tackle this, given his own miserable record at flying. He did not know what he was going to do, other than to talk to his friend and try and help the boy keep his head.
Hui Ming was not reassured. But it seems he need not have worried as the girl managed to grab a hold of the broom and just pull Avery back to the ground. Graceless, yes. But effective. And for the moment Ming could would gladly take results over poise."I got it, Ming, hold your horses"
His relief was short lived though, as Avery crumpled to the ground. For all that he knew that Miss Hawkins would insist that things were under control, for all of the senior's nonchalant spectating, for all that things turned out acceptably; none of this changed the fact that Avery had gotten lucky. Luck was not something Ming planned to rely on for him and his. They would make it through their seven years of this absurdity masquerading as a school.
So Ming decided to act. He did not even pause to take the satisfaction in Avery's very obvious attack against the upperclassman. For all that she might have deserved it in a world according to his sensibilities, this world did not follow his sensibilities. Fractures, broken bones and other injuries here were not life-ending; merely idle distractions.
You could not rely on adults being responsible here. Thinking like that would get you killed. Or worse. So Ming did not pause to take in Avery's pointed attack against the alleged Quidditch player, despite all the satisfaction that it might have given him.
"Avery," he repeated. It was not like before, though. Where before his voice was no longer tinged with worry and concern, his demeanor seemed calm again. There was the slightest quirk of disappointment on his lips. But the biggest difference was perhaps his present tone of voice. It was imperious; a warning and a rebuke all rolled into three short syllables delivered perfectly calmly. "Perhaps we can begin with an explanation on why you were in a position that required a savior in the first place?"
The slightest tilt of his head, as his eyes fell on the broom. It was an ugly, battered thing. And certainly not one of the ones that had been used in the flying class. Had Avery charmed a piece of wood and thought it was good enough to fly?
He and his friend clearly needed to have a long, private talk about the dangers of this world. But now was not the place, or the time. For now, Hui Ming would satisfy himself with the knowledge that his friend would not do something immediately reckless. Long term ideas on danger, and survival could be hashed out behind closed doors
The curtains fell. And the silence was deafening

Don't Lose Your Head!

Okay, so Ming was here, all was good, and he was on sweet, sweet ground again. He lay there for a minute, basking in the fortune of being alive. What beautiful, cloudy skies. What nice, solid earth for his back. What magnificent, trustworthy broom with the splinter that didn't buckle him to the ground, despite being difficult to maneuver. He knew he chose the right broom when he went into that unlocked shed (unbeknownst to him, it was probably the batch of brooms that needed maintenance).
A shadow fell upon him. Ming loomed above, somehow taller than usual, it seemed, from Avery's prone position.
"Avery." Something about Ming's tone changed, and Avery gulped unconsciously. That cold, distant tone harbored a lot more menace than one would assume. Only a young Chinese boy like himself would understand. It was reminiscent of the tone of his father, the strict disciplinarian he was. "Perhaps we can begin with an explanation on why you were in a position that required a savior in the first place?" -- A voice that dripped with disappointment, one that instantaneously let one know they were wrong. Avery's face reddened briefly with shame. If he was being reprimanded by anyone else, perhaps a teacher at his old school, he would've had on a sheepish smile, but he didn't even dare to curl the corner of his lips in this case. How in the world did people like his father just know to imbue that sense of 'you can be better than this' feeling in others?
He pushed himself up into a sitting position, crossing his legs. "I'm sorry, Ming, I was wrong to get so carried away with how much I wanted to learn to fly," he apologized, knowing that he was being reckless launching off on his own, without even speaking to Maggie about it first. Of course, it was important having others ready to spot you and guide you for any exercise. That's precisely why he worked out with Flash Holmwood in the courtyard the weekend before.
It was then that he remembered that Cash Ironwoods was still there. "Hey, maybe Cash can help out!" he said cheerfully, as if that was the best idea in the world. Here was a full-flown Slytherin beater, as if his lucky stars had finally aligned that day! He stood up hastily, dusting off his robes to at least look as if he hadn't just fallen into a heap on the ground.
"Cash, I know you're good at flying. Would you mind showing me and Maggie how to do it?" he asked eagerly, very much hoping that they would agree to share some of their experience with them. If the older Slytherin was already there with a broom, surely they intended to fly that day? Perhaps Cash could just explain how everything should be done out loud, and they could learn and practice with them! "We'd appreciate it sooo much that we'd be forever in your debt!" he added, eyes now gleaming, having forgotten that Cash had refused to help him off his broom just moments before.
It would be the best day of his week. He was just that determined to make it through quidditch tryouts. Little did he know that he might've just sold his soul to Cash Ironwoods.

"Oh, blah, blah, blah. Cry me a river, Ming, that was cool," Maggie returned, quick to Avery's defense. Sure, it had been kinda terrifying for a moment there and Maggie had worried that their disobedience and disregard for the rules of the air would lead to their forceful removal from Hogwarts, but nothing worse than a slap on the wrist from an older student had been administered to the two of them. Plus, Cash seemed pretty amused by the situation at hand, anyway. Maggie doubted they really cared all that much when it came down to the wire. Now that the whole situation had been averted and Avery Chen had both feet successfully on the ground, it all seemed so much cooler. Her friend had just been airborne! Up in the sky on a splintered tree branch, a bit worse for wear and, like, a million times cooler for it! "How d'you feel, Avery? Cooler? Braver? Like a professional?" Maggie surveyed the broomstick, lying at Avery's side like a dejected favorite toy. "That was so cool. My turn!"
Quick to excite. Of course, the presence of Cash Ironwoods had not been forgotten, and Maggie turned to the older student after a moment's hesitation. Right. To address their perpetual rule-breaking and suck up to an upperclassman. Simple.
"You could teach us to fly, couldn't you? You're a Quidditch player, we're gonna be Quidditch players, we could help each other out!" Such a simple solution, really. "Plus, you probably know where to get better brooms," Maggie toed the broomstick at the side hesitantly. It bobbled before returning to its position.
The plight of Avery Chen had been forgotten, and two first year students stood begging their superior for a flying lesson. Hui Ming looked less than pleased.
When was that ever not the case, though? Couldn't be fussed with.

While Avery panicking in his state by saying "That's totally different!. It's like, it's so easy to dive into a lava pit, but it's so hard to get back out!", the other girl - Maggie - had different approached. "I promise that we're normally more composed than this" was what she said. She has this calming vibe that oozed from the way she approached the dire situation.
It is so funny how two individual insights were different from one another. At Avery statement of mentioning diving into a lava pit, Cash raised both of their eyebrow in amusement. "Really now?"They tried to suppressed their grin. This two firsties are amusing to them but Cash could not say the same for Hui Ming.
The other boy gave Cash a vibe that they did not want to develop much further until they could guess what and who Hui Ming really are. "Have you ever jump into a lava pit before?"They asked Avery a rhetorical question. After some time of Avery almost jumped into his untimely doom. Maggie managed to dragged him down into the ground again.
He then sprawled on the ground, the boy was so glad that he avoided his death. Avery said his thank you but did not share the same sentiment toward the green eyes. At the displayed that laid in front of their eyes, this time the Cuban descendant could not hold their laughter anymore. They let out a small laugh as Avery laid on the ground.
"No thanks to the person who has actually flown in quidditch matches"The boy said to the Beater. "What?,"They expressed after such accusation. "Did you think I would cradled and hold you like a baby after your stupid action?"Cash smirked at that. "If you think I would do that to any of you,"Cash's eyes bounced from Avery to Maggie and finally landed on Hui Ming.
"Then you thought wrong. Since I would not do such thing. Whether you are my friend or not"The young Ironwoods finished their sentence. There were a conversation between Avery, Hui Ming and Maggie that Cash tuned out until Avery called them out from his position that still sprawled out on the ground.
"Cash, I know you're good at flying. Would you mind showing me and Maggie how to do it?"The soon to be Slytherin second - string Keeper asked the other Quidditch player in eagerness. Cash looked at Avery for a moment until Maggie also voice the same request.
"You could teach us to fly, couldn't you? You're a Quidditch player, we're gonna be Quidditch players, we could help each other out!"The short haired girl said to Cash. The green eyes still stared both of them in silence. They deliberately wanted to know how far they could pushed this silence and how much both Avery and Maggie wanted Cash to trained them.
Cash revolve was still unbroken until Avery said something that Cash definitely will use in the future to collected his (and Maggie if she one the same boat as Avery) debt to the young socialite.
"We'd appreciate it sooo much that we'd be forever in your debt!"Is what Avery said to Cash. "Sure"Cash stated as they know this could lead into a potential rule - breaking.
As an upperclassman, Cash should have known better. But as weirdly as it is, Cash was bored being a good student. And so far they have not got a single detention in three years of their student career in this prestige school. "Plus, you probably know where to get better brooms"Maggie chimed in. "On that note, Quality Quidditch Supplies store at Diagon Alley had a lot of variations for the broom that you dream or looking for,"Cash told Avery, Hui Ming and Maggie.
"They got from the cheapest such as Cleansweep 2 that costed for 9 Galleons up to Oakshaft 79. That broom cost is 750 Galleons, which is the most expensive broom the store had"They explained to the three other that present in the field. With how often Cash visited the shop, they know the price of the brooms that was sold in the shop in the back of their mind.
"I, myself, trying to save up a Silver Arrow"They told Avery, Maggie and Hui. "Though this is quite good broom,"They shake the broom that they held. "It was not mine. This broom once belong to my mother"They informed three others. "If you want me to train the two of you, expect the unexpected"They expressed.
Cash then put down their broom on the ground and jog towards the Slytherin's Locker Room to grabbed their plush bludger. Once they fetched it, they jogged back towards the training pitch again. The young Ironwoods then grabbed their broom by the shaft that laid on the ground and with one hand on the handle of the broom, they kicked the ground.
Their other hand, hold the plush bludger. A few meters up in the air, they called out both Avery and Maggie. "So, are you ready to train with me or are you both just going to stand there and do nothing about it?"They challenge and taunted both Avery and Maggie with a smirked etched on their lips.

Hui Ming had hoped for some kind of response, some justification. But no, Avery just apologised. As if that would make it all right if he fell off his broom and broke his leg. Or worse, his skull. He was about to let out a rebuke, to try and force some sense into his best friend in this world. Hogwarts was a deathtrap, and flying was particularly dangerous. Even the flying professor had all but admitted this when the man replied to his owl about concerns of safety, not with a "flying is actually safe because x", but with a "flying is a requirement and you will do it."
He did not want some completely avoidable bout of completely avoidable stupidity. He didn't want his friend hurt. He did not want to lose Avery.
But this was not the time nor the place to have that conversation, not when he was being blown off by the likes of Miss Hawkins. Clearly, the girl was the type who would find formula one races thrilling and gambling to be addictive. It was . . . . unfortunate.
Even Miss Ironwoods seemed to not register the actual dangers of levitating to near-lethal distances on an enchanted piece of wood, since her reaction was more akin to someone attempting and failing to ride a bike.
He exhaled sharply. "This is a bad idea," he said to his best friend, almost as much about the flying as owing a favour to an unknown who clearly did not much value them. "Try and learn a spell or two to break your fall safely before doing anything too adventurous."
He raised an eyebrow as the senior all but goaded the other two first-years. He had seen similar tactics among the burlier boys in his Muggle school, and suffice to say that it did not leave him star-studded and impressed the was his peers seemed to be. "We need to talk about this later."
"I'll just leave this in your hands then, Miss Ironwoods." The bespectacled Chinese boy nodded at the two girls, before taking several steps to the side to watch the inevitable fiasco training session unfold.
He was aware that there had been one spell to slow down a freefall. He would need to find the time to learn how to cast it.

Don't Lose Your Head!

Had he ever jumped into a lava pit before? He was glad that he hadn't... but he had done something equally scary because, well, he was stupid adventurous like that. "No, I haven't, but I've jumped into The Great Lake to chase after the Giant Squid's tentacles before!" He didn't mention the fact that he accidentally fell in. Nor did he mention the fact that he needed a girl to pull him out of the water. Nor did he mention the aftermath... He just tried to sound brave and cool, that's all.
Which, of course, he was! Because, he had just made a spectacular landing after actually flying! "Yeah, that was sooo cool, Maggie! The breeze in your hair, the height! It made me look like a professional quidditch player, dinnit?" Avery imagined he was probably picture-perfect, looking all glorious and worthy of a collectible quidditch card. "You better give it a try! Everything looks smaller from way up there."
Avery gazed in awe at Cash's not new but shiny broom. It was so elegant and much more beautiful than the school brooms from the shed. Someday, he told himself, maybe he could even get a Silver Arrow. Maybe he ought aim for a Cleansweep first.
"If you want me to train the two of you, expect the unexpected," Cash warned them. Well, of course! "Yeah, definitely!" he exclaimed. "Maggie and I are great at handling the unexpected, aren't we, Maggie?" Sometimes they added a little flavor of the unexpected to whatever they did, themselves.
Ming seemed quite unimpressed, if not worried to the bone. "This is a bad idea," he said, "Try and learn a spell or two to break your fall safely before doing anything too adventurous." Avery almost rolled his eyes at his friend. His endearing stick-in-the-mud Ming. "Don't worry, Ming," he said, trying to assuage his friend but knowing it probably won't do anything to help, "Cash is here, she won't let anything happen to us." He seriously did not even believe his own words, but his excitement had completely overtaken him by this point. Ming was obviously not palliated, noting in Chinese that they must speak afterwards, likely so that the others wouldn't hear. Avery almost gulped, but nodded in response, then immediately tried to put the inevitable conversation and possible scolding out of his mind.
"So, are you ready to train with me or are you both just going to stand there and do nothing about it?" Was that a challenge? Avery grinned. Challenge accepted. He was going to do this, and shock everybody with his flying skills. Knock Ming's socks off with how good he was, to show him he had no need to worry about his friend. "Yeah, ready when you are!" Bring it on.

Don't Lose Your Head!
"You gotta give me credit for my hand in it, Aves," Maggie pointed out with a snap of her fingers. "I had just as much to do with it!" She did! Totally did, because she'd been the one to pull Avery down from what had surely been certain death. Man, what would he do without her?
Still, it had been awesome. "Looked like a regular member of the Ballycastle Bats, though! Best Quidditch player Hogwarts has ever seen," better than the famed Harry Potter Maggie had heard so so much about. And maybe that was a sure exaggeration, but Avery Chen was her friend and she'd be damned if she didn't give him the support he needed.
With a bit of chiding, of course. Nobody said Maggie Hawkins was nice. "I mean, if the best meant looking like a bird who never learned to fly, that is. Gotta give you a couple of points for sheer courage," she tapped her chin, "Or would it be dumb luck? Can't tell."
Maggie Hawkins loved to think she was quite one for hysterics.
The offer to fly rang strong, though, and how could Maggie possibly be expected to do anything besides accept? From a real school player, too, who was just lucky enough to happen upon their makeshift training session at exactly the right time in exactly the right place.
Wow. Luck.
"You're gonna eat my dust in the sky, Avery!" She shouted, picking up the other broom and slinging her leg over it. Kicked off from the ground and into the sky, almost wobbly. Should've really established a line of understanding and trust, so to speak, with the broom before mounting it, but those were things that had to be considered after the fact! Better ask for forgiveness than permission, or so they said.
The sky was biting, nipping at her robes and fingertips, and her hair was getting in her face and eyes, but Maggie felt as if she was home. This was where she was meant to be, truly, in the sky, far above the ground.
She'd always been told she had her head in the clouds, but the idea that it could be taken literally? Never crossed a previously muggle mindset. This? This was freedom. This was intrigue. This was living.

Up in the air Cash looked down. From where they are situated, it seems the other three are still in a conversation. Well, it is more Avery converse with Ming while Maggie stood beside her classmate. Cash could not make out what Avery said to Ming. After Cash called both Avery and Maggie out, the former shout along the line ready when you are back to the green yes.
While waiting for both Avery and Maggie, the air decided to pick up. The chill air biting their fingerless gloves. The tips of their fingers felt cold and numb. The wind caressed Cash's hair, blowing it softly. Though their fingers felt cold and numb, at least the long sweater and the black ripped jeans that Cash decide to wear protected them from the cold.
After sometimes Avery kicked off of the ground and Maggie followed suit. "Finally!"They expressed. "I thought both of you fell asleep on me"The Cuban descendant stated. Their green eyes bounce from Avery then Maggie. "Alright! this is how it is going to work"Cash started. "You,"The young Ironwoods pointed to Avery.
"I saw on the signed up sheet you are signed up as Keeper?"They asked Avery. "A Keeper's job is to protect the three-goal rings and prevent the opposite team from scoring with their quaffles. So you better guard that goal posts with all your might and protect it like your life depends on it"They explained.
"Now, I want you in that position"Cash ordered Avery to flew in front of the goal post. Once Avery flew in front of the goal post, Cash averted their eyes to Maggie. "And if I remember correctly you are signed up as one of the Chasers role?"They inquired Maggie. Cash waited for a moment until Maggie reply her answer.
"A Chaser's job is to obtain possession of the Quaffle and to score with the Quaffle against the enemy Keeper"They continued. "It is like you are a Shooting Guard in basketball or similar to that"They added. Cash hoping Maggie understands basketball terminology. If not, well Cash will explain some more on other time.
Today is the time to teach these two young people to stay on their broom and how to play Quidditch the right way. "Today I will act as the opposing Chaser,"They said to Avert. "Your goal is to protect the goal post with any means that you deem necessary"The young socialite added. "I will throw this ball at you and see how you defend your posts"The Beater concluded.
Then Cash averted their eyes from Avery to Maggie. "And if you think you ready to practice in your position, let me know"They said. "You ready?"Cash stated to Avery. The soon-to-be=Keeper nodded his head. "Alright then!"With that being said, Cash put some distance. When they near one of the goalposts, they hurled the plush Bludger toward Avery with all their might.
It is either beginner luck or maybe Avery was just a natural-born Keeper. There was a sense of calmness engulfed him. The boy defends his posts confidently and effortlessly. Cash scoffed at that. "It seems you are born to play the part"The Cuban descendant compliment Avery. "You may succeed now, but do not get cocky. There still more of that coming at your way"They expressed then signaling Avery to tossed the plush back to Cash again.

Don't Lose Your Head!

Wow, did Maggie just say that he looked like a regular member of the Ballycastle Bats? Best player at Hogwarts who looked like a bird who couldn't fly yet? He grinned even wider at Maggie's amazing compliments, as if that were possible. But, certainly, he had to give credit to his friend. If they were going to be on a team together, they'd be helping each other look awesome together, of course. Get those fans all riled up. "Full credit to you, Mags!" he called back. "My hair probably wouldn't look quite so right if I had a bad fall, after all." Not that his bird's nest of hair looked any better now, but one could hope he looked picture-perfect with that not-even-stylish mess upon his head.
So, was it sheer courage or dumb luck? Neither one of them could tell. Certainly, skill was out of the picture, so it couldn't have been that. "Well, maybe a bit of both?" he wondered. "But I'd say it was pure skill and talent, mainly," he joked, and it cracked him up. He always loved to laugh at his own jokes, because he was drop-dead hilarious, the funniest alive.
"You're gonna eat my dust in the sky, Avery!" With that, the girl kicked off into the air above. Not willing to get left behind, Avery swung a leg over his broom and launched into the air after her to where Cash was already waiting, completely forgetting his near-death incident moments ago. The air up here was much more chilly, but the breeze upon his face was welcoming for the thrill-seeker that he was.
He nodded as Cash asked him if he had signed up to try out for Keeper. It seemed that they wanted him to practice protecting the goal from them like his life depended on it. Well, if his job was to protect the goals, he would do it like no other. He steered his broom carefully to the position in front of the middle goalpost. "Ready!" he called out to Cash, clutching the broomstick with both hands and staring forwards intently as if a bull was going to charge him head-on. Perhaps he was just a bit tense, tens of meters above the ground and higher than he'd ever been alone in his life, wobbling just a bit to regain his balance.
The plush came forwards faster than he expected. It was sailing towards the top part of the hoop, and he knew that it would enter the goalpost if he didn't react quickly. He willed himself to move upwards, but he wasn't quite willing to lift a hand from his broom to catch the ball just yet, so he craned his neck and stuck out his head. BAM. It hit him straight in the face, but he managed to grab hold of the plush ball before it bounced off to the ground.
He blinked -- dazedly -- for a second, clutching the plush in the crook of his arm towards his torso while both hands were planted firmly on the shaft of the broom. It wasn't the most elegant way to do it, that's for sure, but he did it! "Wow, did you see that?" he asked them both, as he finally dared to grab the plush with one hand and toss it back to Cash, catching his balance as he tilted slightly off-kilter while he did so. He was going to be so great at blocking those quaffles with his head or whatever it took. "Maggie, maybe you want to try shooting at my goalpost too?" he asked, overly confident now. "Let's see if you can make it!"
