Aaron Jones was incredibly nervous. When he glanced into the Great Hall and didn't see her at the Slytherin table, he felt a mix of relief and fear. Maybe he wouldn't be able to find her at all, and so he wouldn't have to think about it until tomorrow. Or the day after. Or never. But the longer it was between now and talking to her, the more the nerves grew. The third year started making his way outside, in an effort to get some fresh air and clear his head. His appetite was nonexistent at the moment.

When those posters advertising the Fall Ball had cropped up all over school last Wednesday, Aaron hadn't really given them a second thought. He hadn't attended any of the school balls since the illegal Blossom Ball he hosted during his first year - why bother? This year wasn't going to be any different... or so he thought. @Jack Warren is the one who changed his mind. The boy had been adamant this past weekend that Aaron had to go to the ball - and that he should have a date. Jack already had a date, so apparently going together as friends had been out of the question. The former Hufflepuff prefect had been really vocal about how Aaron should ask a girl as soon as possible.

There was only one person that had come to mind when Jack asked if he liked anyone. @Santario Martin. Aaron hadn't admitted that out loud to Jack, only feeling his face go red in embarrassment and brushing aside the question.

He didn't fully understand why Santario is the one who came to mind, because it's not like they were really good friends. They had known each other for a while now - being in the same year and all meant they had classes together. But it wasn't often that they hung out one-on-one outside of saying hello between classes. It's just that when he thought about who he could possibly ask, her face was the one that popped into his head.

There could be a lot of reasons, Aaron supposed. Santario was a really good photographer - as evidenced by the fact that she got such amazing photos of the Secret Blossom Ball during first year - and that was something Aaron thought was really cool. And she was kind - when he had visited her after the ball, she had comforted him even though he didn't deserve her forgiveness at the time. And just last year, she had proved to be rather insightful, being one of the very few people to notice when he was feeling really down in the dumps following his quitting the Quidditch team. Plus she was super talented, evidenced by the fact that she was one of the Slytherin Duelling Captains. And she was really pretty. Argh. Why was this so confusing?

As the thirteen-year-old boy walked along the grounds trying to make sense of his feelings, his brown eyes landed on a very familiar visage. Too familiar. It was her. Aaron paused in his walk, suddenly feeling his heartbeat in his throat. He couldn't do this. He wasn't prepared. He nervously tugged on the sleeve of his school robes, wondering if now was even a good time to do it. They were between classes, and it was a bit chilly out, and he didn't have anything to give her. Was he supposed to bring flowers? What if she turned him down or laughed or asked why? What if the feelings were unrequited? Maybe he should have asked Jack for more advice on this sort of thing, rather than brushing off their conversation.

Aaron was on the verge of turning on his heel and heading back to the castle, but then she looked up and their eyes met. He couldn't walk away now - maybe it was time to follow through. He offered a nervous grin and raised his hand in a waving motion, then approached.

"Hey, Santario. How are you?" he asked, gesturing next to her as his way of asking if he could sit beside her.
Aaron has a Calming Presence.
Your presence simply puts others at ease, if it is your carefree personality or the trust others have in you, the result is still the same. With you there, perhaps through your encouragement, your allies are able to better focus.
Permission was received to headcanon a conversation between Aaron and Jack.

Santario had decided to steal away outside right before lunch started, not really caring for the hustle and bustle of way too many students crammed into the great hall. Plus, if San were honest with herself, she still felt awkward around Percival, and she was avoiding him when she could, even if they had to patrol together most nights. She sighed softly to herself and ran a hand through her hair, wondering how things seemed to get messed up so quickly. The problem of it all was that she regretted agreeing to go with Vladimir, but she had not known Percival was going to ask her. In reality, she, again, didn’t think anyone was going to ask her, and it had come as such a shock when Vladimir had she immediately said yes without giving it a second thought.

As she sat there looking out over the grounds, a sense of ease seemed to wash over her causing her to turn around to look, seeing none other than Aaron Jones. Their eyes locked, and San offered him a slight smile. Having not seen him since he bolted out of the owlery last year, she was unsure where they really stood. Perhaps, that was his reason for looking a tad nervous to see her. “Hey Aaron!” She patted the ground next to her confirming his ask to sit with her. “I am doing alright; how have you been? I did not see you at summer camp.” She casually lied about her state of well-being, but he would be none the wiser of her internal conflicts.

Aaron felt his nerves spike as Santario patted the ground beside her in affirmation that he could sit. He had almost been hoping she'd say she was too busy to talk or something. But he maintained his nervous smile and sat down slightly angled towards her, crossing his legs in the process. "Yeah, it's been a while," he said, releasing a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding when he sat. "I didn't go to camp," he confirmed, not really wanting to delve into the reason why. It was stupid in retrospect, and he didn't really want to sound stupid in front of her.

"But I'm really glad to be back here," he said, sincerity ringing in his voice. Hogwarts felt like his true home lately rather than just a second home, considering how his last interaction with his family had gone. The memory made Aaron make a small face, but he quickly turned his mind back to the task at hand. He made a subconscious decision not to jump right into talk of the ball - they could catch up first. They hadn't talked properly since June - sure they'd seen each other in classes this past month, but this was their first actual conversation in a while. The thirteen-year-old looked back at Santario, and this time his smile came a bit more naturally.

"Crazy how we're third years now, right? We've got electives now, and we can go to Hogsmeade on the weekends," Aaron said, feeling a bit more at ease with his new mindset. Surely the ball would come up in conversation at some point, and then- well, he would just ask her. The thought made his chest feel like it had constricted, but he once again tried to push away the nerves. For now, just focus on having a normal conversation.

Something about the way Aaron had answered her reminded her about how he had been when she found him in the owlery. San would give him a warm smile and nod instead of pushing further with any questions of the sort. It seemed she would need to tread carefully if she intended on having a conversation. “It is wonderful to be back. I love the sites at home, but nothing beats the beauty overlooking this lake.” It probably helped that, for once the grounds near the lake brought back some better memories to mind.

Third-year, it was pretty crazy she would have to nod once more in agreement. “I cannot wait to see Hogsmeade covered in snow. I am going to have to plan an entire day just to take photos of the landscape there.” The polite smile turned into an elated grin as she spoke about one of her passions. Her eyes lit up as she thought about wrapping her cold fingers around a cup of hot cocoa and staring out the window as snow fell. Santario became less formally polite and more relaxed as she spoke to him, and it would seem as if whatever ice had overcome them, at least on her side, had been broken. “I am also really interested in Care of Magical Creatures and Ancient Runes as electives. Are there any that you are currently taking a shining to?” The beginning of the year had been so hectic already, and it seemed as if things were seamlessly spiraling out of control with puzzle pieces still falling into place, which meant this talk with a friendly acquaintance was quite refreshing.

When Santario mentioned the sight of the lake, Aaron's brown eyes cast towards the water. The lakeside was a place where he sometimes did his taekwondo routines. It was usually very peaceful, helping him maintain his concentration and focus. So yes, he agreed there was definitely a great beauty to it.

"I'd love to see the pictures you get," Aaron said with a smile when she spoke about looking forward to taking snowy photographs of the wizarding village. "I just really enjoy the change in scenery, like being away from the castle," he said, sharing his own reasoning for enjoying Hogsmeade visits. "It's a really cool spot to hangout with friends, and it feels kinda.. grown up? You know, being able to go around buying stuff and having meals and such." The Hufflepuff hoped what he was saying made sense.

"Oh, I really like Ancient Runes," Aaron agreed, his eyes lighting up a bit as he latched onto the shared interest. "I'm pretty good with history, and since there's a big history aspect to Ancient Runes, I've been doing pretty well," he said, smiling a bit proudly at this. He was not known for excelling in school, so to have another subject he was decent in was nice. "Magical Creatures class is - well, it's hard to believe some of the pictures in the Fantastic Beasts textbook, and that we might actually meet some of them," Aaron said, speaking from the perspective of a child who had grown up in the muggle world and was eventually told things like unicorns and dragons didn't exist.

The thirteen-year-old boy shifted his sitting position slightly, getting a bit more comfortable. The weather was nice today. "Are you not hungry?" Aaron asked, referring to the fact that they were outside on the grounds when most of the student population was inside eating lunch right now.
