How About it Then?

In recent weeks, Scarlet had really grown to enjoy her time unwinding with a book in the Quidditch stands, and sometimes just watching her friends or just other students practising. Whilst there was something quite peaceful about sitting in the empty stands, looking out onto an empty pitch, she did like hearing the whizz of broomsticks zooming around the pitch in front of her, today was one of those days.
She had brought with her a copy of Potion Opuscule that she had borrowed from the library, not mandatory reading for Potions but something she decided to check out nevertheless during her last visit.
There was a small group of students already on the pitch when she arrived, they looked to be in the middle of practise, or they were just having fun, in any case they were all pretty good flyers. Scarlet could definitely see herself spending more time on a broom during her free time, not Quidditch though, that wasn't the sport for her, as much as she enjoyed flying, the Quidditch pitch felt to confined for something as freeing as riding a broom. Though maybe she hadn't given the sport a proper chance. Broom racing though, that was something she could see herself getting into, looking at the players, she wandered how the flying of a player from each sport would compare.
She was barely four pages into the chapter she had flicked to before her gaze was permanently fixed on the activity on the pitch. She couldn't deny that they had skills, one of them caught her eye, she had seen him before, he was fast, or at least his broom was. Scarlet moved to one of the seats in the front row of the stands, the boy had dark hair, he looked familiar, he was a Quidditch player. Yes. She was sure she had seen him playing in one of the matches she had watched, that explains the control he showed over the broom.
Lost in her own thoughts as she had been piecing together where he was familiar from, Scarlet hadn't noticed the other members of the group pull down to the ground and begin walking off the pitch, the dark haired boy continuing a few more laps of the pitch.

How About it Then?

It was a fine day to be practicing Quidditch, or even just to be outside in general. It was warm and kind of muggy, but cool at the same time, so you never felt like you were suffocating and dying in your clothing from the heat. He had noticed this from the moment he woke up and went to breakfast, just from looking at the blue, blue sky sitting right outside the window.
And so the day had been a countdown to the end of the day. Once his countdown ended, Suzuki had sprinted up the stairs (finally not getting lost in the forever changing staircases), skidded to a stop in front of his dorm, snatched his broom, and practically flew (without his broom, of course) outside and to the Quidditch pitch.
There, his observations had been proven right. It was a perfect day. Kage spend the next few hours chasing after bludgers, practicing broom control, agility, and other necessities for the sport of Quidditch.
As the sun slowly made it's way across the sky, other players were starting to pack up and leave. Suzuki reluctantly thought about the pile of homework not-so-patiently waiting for him on his bed, and descended to the ground. He jumped off, grabbed his broom, packed the bludgers up, making sure to strap them in tightly.
Walking past the stands, a girl with a familiar book in her hands caught his eye. He set the bludger case down on the ground, and stepped up onto the steps, walking up to the girl.
" Hi, " he said, rather dully. " Is it good? The book, I mean. I've seen it before, but never got to read it. It's a pretty nice day to be reading out here."
Suzuki grimaced inwardly. He'd never been a good conversation starter- he had this stupid habit of running out of things to say and changing topic entirely. It was absolutely terrible, especially since first impressions were supposed to be important or something.

Scarlet eventually went back to her book, it's not like it wasn't interesting, it was, and she loved potions, after Defense Against the Dark Arts, it was her favourite class. She liked reading about all these weird and wonderful potions that they hadn't come across in class, she wondered if they ever would. Then imagined herself trying to brew them herself in her spare time, something she wouldn't make reality until she had more experience from class, she knew many of the potions in the book were quite advanced.
She so easily got back into her book that she didn't notice the pitch clear of it's last player, and then this player make his way up the stairs of the stands to where she was sat.
"Oh hi!" she said, startled a little by the unexpected voice, looking up she saw stood in front of her the boy she had been watching on the pitch, 'the Gryffindor team!' she thought to herself, she knew she recognised from a Quidditch match, he played for Gryffindor.
"The book?...Oh yeah, it's really good, very interesting, are you a fan of potions?" Scarlet asked, she knew far too many people that weren't a fan of the subject, so it was refreshing change to find someone that did in fact enjoy it. "Still only a couple of chapters in, but can already recommend it, not the usual stuff we're told about in class, which is the stuff I love."
She went quiet when she realised she may have been gushing over the book a little too much, and he was probably just asking to be polite. "You're really good," she said, "at Quidditch, you know," she added, making clear her compliment. "What position do you play?" she asked, she didn't know all the details of the game, but she was at least aware of all the basic stuff.

"The book?...Oh yeah, it's really good, very interesting, are you a fan of potions?"
Suzuki inwardly grimaced again. Potions, to him, had always been a sufficiently interesting topic, but he never could pay attention much to the lectures the professor gave. He didn't have the attention span to sit by a bubbling cauldron and stir it in the exact way that the professor had- not like he remembered how the professor had stirred it anyways.
" It's cool, but I'm no good at it." Suzuki nodded at the next comment the girl said. He agreed about the "not the usual stuff we're told about in class"- it was way more fun learning random exotic things professors didn't have the time to tell you about.
"You're really good, at Quidditch, you know. What position do you play?"
He seemed kind of surprised. Compared to some of the older, more experienced players, Suzuki was just a mere second year. Sure, he had the strength and nimbleness (and the broom) to keep up with everything as a beater, but still, he was just a beginner.
" Thanks. I'm a beater, I'm kind of new to the Gryffindor team. Speaking of which, what's your name? I'm Kage Suzuki, but call me Suzuki."

When Scarlet thought about it, there weren't any subjects that she liked but wasn't good at, for her, it seemed that not liking something and not being good at it came hand in hand, Astronomy popped into her head, it was probably her worst subject, not that she was scraping an Acceptable grade or anything, but she definitely wasn't keen on the subject.
"Everyone has that one subject," she said in response, "and we're still only in second year," she said, recognising him as a member of her own year, "you've got ages to improve at it if you like it enough to stick with it," she continued, giving him a reassuring smile.
"I'm Scarlet Salvatore, you can just call me Scarlet," she answered with a small laugh, "though to be honest I like the idea of using last names, yours is really cool by the way," she added, she'd definitely consider going my Salvatore at some point in the future.
"I'm hoping to get into Broom Racing this year," she said, "didn't do any sports last year and I'm wishing I did, maybe not Quidditch though, I can't see myself playing it."
Scarlet looked down towards the empty pitch, and a fun idea popped into her head, "Hey, if you want to extend your practise a little bit, do you fancy a couple of laps around the pitch, a quick race?" Scarlet asked, she hadn't really had any chanced to practise some broom racing skills, and she needed to if she wanted to be any good for her team.

"I'm Scarlet Salvatore, you can just call me Scarlet, though to be honest I like the idea of using last names, yours is really cool by the way."
He remembered when he'd first come to the UK. He found it weird that a bunch of people went by their first names- in Japan, you only did that for those you knew well. But here, it was normal. He still hadn't gotten used to it, not after nearly half his life.
" Thanks. Where I'm from, everyone goes by their last name, and I kind of got stuck with that tradition."
"I'm hoping to get into Broom Racing this year, didn't do any sports last year and I'm wishing I did, maybe not Quidditch though, I can't see myself playing it."
" You should try it, then. Broom racing's pretty fun- not that I've tried, but I've definitely tried racing people before."
He had- and miserably failed, because 1) the school brooms he'd been using previously were absolutely terrible at tight turns, and 2) attempting to turn at all sent his head reeling, and if he couldn't control it, he probably would've died multiple times and had to retire from his very short Quidditch career.
All in all, he was incredibly happy he'd received a better broom.
"Hey, if you want to extend your practise a little bit, do you fancy a couple of laps around the pitch, a quick race?"
He was somewhat surprised when she mentioned it- it's not everyday you get asked to a broom race from someone who doesn't play Quidditch.
"Sure, why not? You want to use my broom or the school ones?"

Scarlet hadn’t even considered the fact that Kage might not have been born in England, given the vast backgrounds of the many other students she had already met though, she wasn’t surprised to learn this fact, she was intrigued. “Really?! That’s cool!” she said in response, “where is it your from, originally?” Scarlet asked, she was pretty sure that the kind of tradition came from countries in Asia, but which specifically, she didn’t know.
Scarlet laughed at the boy’s next comment amount racing, she could imagine that if she were playing Quidditch she would likely get caught up wanting to be faster than the other players, and lose focus on whatever she was supposed to be doing.
“Now that it’s getting closer to when the broom racing will likely start this year, I’ve been wondering how difficult the professors will make the course,” she said, “when I was at the summer camp this year, I did this maze, and let’s just say they didn’t hold back on making us feel like our lives were in danger,” she explained. She thought back to enchanted vines and the hedge walls closing themselves around Scarlet and her friend.
“Yes! Let’s do it!” she replied, “you can stick with your broom, I’ll take one of the school ones, they’re not as good, I know, but at least I’m familiar with how they fly.” Scarlet put her book away in her bag and led the way to the broom storage, there had always been a couple of brooms that she always tried and clear of, just because they looked a little rough around the edges. One of the brooms grabbed her eye, and she made a grab for it.
Back on the Quidditch pitch, Scarlet mounted the broomstick and rose a few feet off the ground, looking back to Kage, “ready?” she asked, a wide smile on her face, “three laps, first one back to this position wins,” she turned, focussing on the space ahead of her, “say go when you’re ready.”

“Yes! Let’s do it! You can stick with your broom, I’ll take one of the school ones, they’re not as good, I know, but at least I’m familiar with how they fly.”
That was nice. He liked someone who didn't complain about unfairness and all that stuff. He'd met one too many people who went "it's not fair because you have a a better broom". Suzuki had gotten tired of it.
“Ready? Three laps, first one back to this position wins. Say go when you’re ready.”
He nodded, and mounted the broomstick alongside of her.
" Three... Two... One... Go!" He pushed off hard from the ground, feeling a rush of adrenaline, just like at the start of every Quidditch game he'd ever played. He didn't look back- just kept his eyes on the imaginary trail he saw in front of him. Leaning forward for speed, he flattened his body to the broom, just like he would in Quidditch to get to a bludger in time.
He didn't look back, not once. Suzuki knew from experience that looking back could slow you down and potentially make you nervous. He wasn't taking any chances. Despite him having the better broom, he didn't know how good this girl was. Suzuki knew multiple people who were so skilled they could probably beat a Firebolt in a race with a shitty broom.

How About it Then?
All the random snippets of advice and bits of information she remembered from her flying lessons over the past year came to the forefront of her mind, only a few of which she remembered in full, how to pull of turns at speed and such. She knew she was at a disadvantage, you didn’t make your house’s quidditch team without being skilful on a broom.
Scarlet was silent waiting for the word to go from Suzuki, as he said aloud the countdown, she did her best to get a good position and grip on the broom, this was the first time she was actually having a proper race with someone, she didn't want it to be a complete fail - that wouldn't exactly instil her with the confidence she would need to give broom racing a go.
At go she was off, leaning into the broom, pushing it to go at its fastest speed, Suzuki edged ahead of her, she took that as a result of the advantage of being the one to say go, at least that’s what she was telling herself. Somehow managing to s follow closely behind the boy, she drifted slightly to the left of him, she had a plan to overtake him at the upcoming left turn. She was worried that the speed of the school broom wouldn’t be what would help her win the race, shaving down the distance she travelled compared to him though couldn’t hurt.
After the pair had come out of the first turn, they were pretty much head to head, again in the straight stretch across the pitch, Suzuki started to take the lead again but Scarlet kept her position to the left of him, and this time came out of the second corner slightly ahead. Zooming past the place where they had started, Scarlet smiled as she realised she had taken a slight lead. One lap down, two to go.

How About it Then?

He grimaced. Not off to a great start. The small lead he had gotten was probably because he was the one counting off. Suzuki had always been terrible when it came to the speed department. He was one for whacking with all he had at deadly insane metal balls, not zooming around on a pitch like some glorified Snitch.
Oh, well.
He leaned closer to the broom, and steered it slightly so he was racing on shorter track than before. Probably should've thought of that before. Another grimace, and he pushed the broom forward, as fast as it could go. He saw Scarlet flit out of view as he fought her to get in front. He managed to up his speed somewhat, and kept going.
Suzuki didn't think that much of it, but it would be embarrassing to some degree if he lost to someone who had a worse broom and possible less experience than him, despite the fact he only just began in Quidditch. He pushed those thoughts to the back of his head, and focused on controlling his broom instead, being careful to pull as tight of a curve so as not to lose speed.
