IC Date: Tuesday, October 5, 2021
Classes were done for the day, and Avery was not in a study mood. Many of his friends happened to be study fiends, unfortunately, but there was one person that came to mind when he wanted to hang out instead of write papers. And so, he decided to knock on Matthew's door, in hopes that his fellow dormmate wouldn't reject his invitation to wander the hallways in favor of a nap. Fortunately, Matt agreed to come with him, whether because Avery was relentless in his pursuit or because Matt actually wanted to come, he did not know. The two trudged along, chatting about everything and nothing in particular, scanning the walls for any friendly and gossipy paintings, or any secret passageways or magical rooms. If Avery knew one thing, it was that exploring Hogwarts was never boring.
A Samhain poster caught his eye, and he gazed appreciatively at Aurora's artistic masterpiece. Their plans for the ball were coming along quite nicely, and Avery couldn't wait until October 29 when all his classmates could actually enjoy the hard work of their planning committee. "Hey, Matt," he said, as something slipped into his mind. "Are you asking anyone to the ball?" Avery hadn't asked anyone to go with him yet, and he figured he still had time, but did he really? He heard that people had begun partnering up already, and wanted to get the feelers out to see what everyone else was doing. Planning the ball had taken so much of his mind space that he hadn't even thought about who he might ask to attend the ball with him.
As they walked along, he thought he saw someone familiar up ahead. Wavy brown hair, shorter stature... "Hey, Samantha!" he called, waving to her and the girl next to her, who he wasn't sure he recognized. However, it didn't take very long before something else caught his eye. Was that a... jumping pumpkin? "What in the world!" he exclaimed, just as a gaggle of orange streamed from the Great Hall, vines whipping around as if they were arms and legs, manic toothless smiles wide with mischief, eyes blinking and winking. "Are they giggling?" he asked, and swore that he could hear them brimming with laughter as they sought to rampage across the school halls.
One came near him as it sprinted past, vines flying. A green tendril reached out and smacked him in the leg before running off. "Ouch! Stay away or I'll eat you!" he threatened, but the only response he had was heinous laughter from the foul thing as it sped off. "What do we do?" he asked, hoping that these things wouldn't be heading to the Slytherin quarters as they ran amok through the school. "There's no way I want these things in my room at night! I swear, I'm going to shove the next one that comes near me into that broom closet over there!" Hopefully, the janitor or house elf or whoever cleaned the school wouldn't mind.

In most cases back home, Matt would've be annoyed to be woken up from a dead sleep when all he wanted to close his eyes and forget his worldly responsibilities. On this particular day, however, when he cracked his eyes at the sound of Avery's knocking and heard who it was, he wasn't overly bothered. Not only did he instinctively like his dormmate, but upon sitting up and hearing that the reason he was woken was to wander the halls instead of study he was down with it. One might say there was a certain felinity to his personality in his alternating interests of sleep, play, and explore.
As they walked and he noted familiar mental checkpoints - a month in this place had finally offered him a sense of direction - one of Avery's questions gave him pause. Right, the ball. He remembered vaguely hearing about it before it was announced and mentioning it to Liana, but now that it was announced announced he really ought to get onto figuring out his plans. While he usually didn't plan very far ahead, this was for fun and so asking someone would help make the night even better. Someone friendly and fun, probably a girl too since for whatever reason a lot of the older years were freaking out about finding someone of the opposite sex to go with.
"Hm... yeah, maybe Maggie, she seems pretty cool." While he didn't know her that well, his first impression of her from the study group was that she enjoyed being around people as much as him. A girl like her could make for a fun night of mischief and if he was right about her then she'd probably enjoy trying to meet new people with him. "Too bad most people are all boy-girl, otherwise I'd say we should just go together. You got anyone lined - "
His question was cut off by the greeting of a new girl, one he vaguely recognized from the talent show. He didn't know the other one with her, but before he could nudge Avery to subtly ask the strangest things started popping out of the Great Hall. Oh no. Oh bloody hell no.
Why was it always plants in the Wizarding World? He was going to start to develop an unhealthy fear for anything green between the Mandrakes and now these terrifying little bastards with their giggles and grins. Screw Halloween movies, this crazy school was a horror show in and of itself.
"There is absolutely no bloody way these things are going anywhere near my room!" he yelled as he fumbled with his wand, cursing at the billowy robes before managing to pull it free. If it were anywhere else he would've probably just run, but manic bouncing pumpkins in the place he liked to sleep? Over his dead body.
Liking Avery's idea, he tilted the aspen wood at one of the pumpkins to try to subdue it so someone could try to grab it and shove it into the closet. "Flipendo, motherplanter."505 WordsACTION: Cast Flipendo at the pumpkin

As two boys streaked down the hall after the cackling pumpkin, it took a sharp corner and a broom closet with it's door slightly cracked open showed up at the perfect time. One of the boys whipped out their wand and cast a powerful Flippendo at the pumpkin, sending it summersaulting over their heads and into the closet with a 'thunk'. The door would quickly slam shut with a small gust of wind from the after affects of the spell, leaving the two boys pumpkin-less.

@Avery Chen, @Matthew Gray and @Rachel DavisIt had been a little over a month that Samantha was back in the castle. She loved being back at Hogwarts, making new friends and learning new stuff. Her homesickness had even faded away a little. Now she was on her way to the great hall for some socializing. As an extrovert Samantha loved being around people and she already finished her schoolwork so her free time would be spend with her friends.
When she entered the small hall she saw a familiar face. Sam had met Rachel a few weeks ago, when they went chasing geese together with Vivian. While the geese weren't that much fun, it had been fun meeting Rachel. They had sang together and Samantha considered her a friend. Well Sam considered almost everybody she had ever had talked to a friend, but that is besides the point. Samantha waved at Rachel: "Hi Rachel! What are you doing?"
The young girl turned around when she heard somebody greeting her. It was Avery, the puppy boy. Next to him there was somebody else that Samantha didn't know. She hadn't seen him before, maybe he was a first year. It would make sense, Avery also was a first year and maybe the other boy was his friend.
"Hi Avery, and?" Samantha turned her face towards the company of Avery. She gave a little encouraging smile trying to get the boy to tell his name. There would be no reason for anybody to be scared of Sam, she wasn't scary at all. She actually was quite cute, as her best friend always liked to say. Samantha didn't think she was cute and also hated being called cute, but she still is cute. Her beautiful blue eyes, round face and height made her look younger and lots of adults thought she was adorable.
"What in the world!" Samantha's turned her attention to Avery. She followed his eyes, only to see a pumpkin. But not just any pumpkin, this one had arms? She was shocked and took a few steps a way from the pumpkin.
She didn't have the best experiences with magical creatures that were in places that they were not suppose to be. "I'm not sure if they are giggling, but what I do know is that pumpkins aren't suppose to look like this." Her brain searched for an explanation to what had happend. "I think something went wrong, probably a spell. I wonder who would make such a big mistake." She would never screw up like that, according to herself of course.
"It may be smart if we take a few steps back?" She was the oldest of the group, even if she didn't look like it. Samantha wasn't planning on getting anywhere near the pumpkins, especially not attaching them. She knew that some animals got aggressive if they felt scared or got attacked. Maybe it was the same for this magic pumpkins.
Maybe it would have been smart to share this knowledge before Matthew casted flipendo, but Samantha had been to slow. Luckily for the group the spell hit the pumpkin and the pumpkin disappeared in the closet.
"WOW, that was pretty cool! Especially for a firstie!" Maybe she shouldn't have assumed that the unknown boy was a first year. She had guessed right this time, but assuming thing still weren't right.Word count: 555

It was another great day at Hogwarts. It was October or what many calls it as 'Spooky Season'. And to add to the spookiness, or not, there was the fall ball. Now Rachel heard about it and was thrilled but quickly her mind changed when reality struck her. She got no one to go with. She's fine going alone but going there with someone was even better. But instead of finding a partner, she was just strolling and going for a walk to distract herself. She was met by decorations for what she presumes as for the ball or for Halloween.
Going to the small hall, she was greeted by a familiar face. "Samantha! Hey, how are you? I'm just looking around, at the decors and for a partner to the fall ball." Rachel amswered and shrugged while smiling. Rachel met Samantha and her friend Vivian a while ago. She wasn't expecting to meet them by catching geese but oh well. At least it was interesting catching geese with the 'goosebusters'. Rachel then heard someone call Samantha's name, and turned around to the voice. She saw two boys, one was familiar to her. After thinking for a moment, almost like a lightbulb lit up from her head, she then realized that one was the student that fell off from one of the boats in the first year entrance. While the other was, well, unfamiliar.
Rachel smiled to the two to be polite while Samantha talked to which Rachel now knows is Avery and then Samantha introducing herself to the other. But that smile vanished after she caught sight of a... Pumpkin? With vine arms and legs? Blinking and then rubbing her eyes, she looked at it again. But before she could process more, the pumpkin ran and then a voice could be heard shouting. A spell which she couldn't hear clearly and... Motherplanter? She saw the two run after the giggling pumpkin, one was casting a spell after it.
She would have found this amusing if it weren't for other pumpkins whipping students. She watched as the pumpkin that was whipping at Avery and the other disappeared into the closet. "Erm... Should we help them orrr... Leave this pumpkin patch?" She asked, redirecting her attention to Samantha. There were other pumpkins on the loose but she didn't know what to do. But to be honest, Rachel would love to pumpkin hunt with them.

In all his waving, he'd forgotten to introduce his friends. "Oh, Samantha, this is Matthew Gray, my Slytherin friend and dormmate. Matt, this is Samantha Salwis a second-year Ravenclaw friend of mine." He paused for a bit, realizing that he had introduced Samantha as his friend. Well, he supposed that was a fitting definition, now that they've reconciled after she rescued him from the lake and he had run away without even thanking her? He didn't suppose that Sam would be the type of person to disagree that they were friends? Instead of worrying about that, he re-directed his attention towards the girl Samantha was walking with. "What's your name?" he asked. "I'm Avery Chen, first year."
No, pumpkins were not supposed to look like this, and he believed that Samantha was correct. He didn't mind if there were a few bright, decorative pumpkins adorning the Snape Dorms -- that place was too dark and clammy for his taste -- but jumping, maniacal things that whipped you with their vines and tearing through his things? Trampling his violin? No, thank you. From what he could tell, Matt seemed to share a similar sentiment, but for different reasons.
"Well, the prefects always seem to be involved in mistakes, if you ask me," he thought aloud in response to Samantha's question about who might have caused this chaos, remembering the transfigured geese last month. "Maybe I'll want to become a prefect someday, just so I can make kids get trampled by geese and get away with it," he added, half huffing indignantly at his unnecessarily sore body from last month, and half eager to wreak havoc without being punished by the mere fortune of having a prefect's badge.
"Flipendo, motherplanter." Avery watched as a light shot from Matt's wand and hit the pumpkin that had whipped Avery earlier. It flew into the air, and landed right into the broom closet. The door slammed shut, locking the rascal inside. "Wow, Copperfield, I didn't know you could do card tricks and closet tricks," he said in admiration. "Can you cut me in half with a sword and put me back together, too?"
Either way, he wasn't going to lose to Matt. Another pumpkin was bouncing off the walls, scattering the portraits of witches and wizards as they sought refuge in other frames. Without thinking, the small boy leapt on top of the pumpkin and grabbed it with a bear hug. The orange horror writhed, vines flying and struggling. Avery lost his balance and fell to the ground, pumpkin still gripped firmly to his chest, but his vision was now a blur of green vines that flapped in his face. The two wrestled on the ground, pumpkin shrieking, and Avery yelling for it to stop moving. He struggled to get back up so that he could inch towards the closet, but fell again as the vines tripped him. It was quite a show, for anyone who cared to watch, and much less refined than a Copperfield magic trick.

Caught off guard by the effectiveness of his spell, Matt could only blink in surprise when the hit sent the pumpkin-creature flying straight into the closet without fanfare or issue. So spells were a good defense after all - he noted how it had worked in his mind for future reference and decided that if it was anywhere near as good on people then he might have a new favourite type of magic. Flourishing his wand, he offered a mock half-bow to the girls before straightening up to listen to Avery's introductions.
Right, Samantha, he vaguely recalled that from theatre. The other girl he still didn't know, but he'd wait for her to answer Avery's question instead of posing a repetitive one. Turning to Samantha, he shrugged easily, relaxed now that he knew there was a surefire way of dealing with the plants. They certainly weren't as dangerous as he'd initially expected - they were no Mandrake or Devil's Snare at any right. "Beginner's luck," he answered the Ravenclaw cheerfully because arrogance would only make people expect great things from him to back it up. He didn't offer argument or complaint about her year assumption like he had with the fifth year Hufflepuff either, mainly because it would make sense that he was a first year since Avery was.
Thinking of Avery, he faced him and let out a small laugh, spreading his hands at the boy's comment. "I could if you're not interested in walking for the rest of your life. Or digesting food. Or breathing. Not sure if that kind of 'magic' would fly in court, though." To add to his amusement, his dormmate went on to physically try to tackle one of the pumpkins, and the success of it was downright hilarious. Suddenly, the situation went from horror to comedy and Matt tucked his wand away as he stepped back, lifting hands up in a motion of surrender.
"I've done my part, if you ladies want to help him out with the pumpkin-wrestling then by all means. I'll supervise. I just have one question. Erm, how are you going to get that through the closet door without letting the other one out when you can barely handle moving that one?"
First, give them what they want. Then, take what you want.

@Avery Chen, @Matthew Gray and @Rachel Davis"I'm good," Samantha answered. The Ravenclaw student smiled when Rachel brought up the fall ball. A few months ago Samantha had been to her first ball ever. The blossom ball had been interesting to say at least. She had to save her friend from embarrassing herself and had helped two other first years get married. And of course she couldn't forget the fact that a random student had quoted Shakespeare to her. It had been a weird but fun day. Samantha would also be joining the fall ball hoping it was as good as her first ball, maybe even better.
When Avery introduced his friend Samantha made a mental note so she wouldn't forget Matthew's name. As she was focused on remembering the boys name, it took her a moment to realize that Avery had introduced her as a friend. She smiled. Samantha called people friends really fast, but she knew it wasn't normal to do that. She saw the fact that Avery called her a friend as a complement and was really happy that he considered her a friend.
Samantha looked at Avery in disbelieve. How could he say something like that. You weren't suppose to be a prefect if you were planning on breaking the rules. "Well, I don't think that would be such a good plan. Prefects should make sure the school is safe, not create danger or geese!" Samantha would love to be a prefect when she was older. Not because she wanted to "make kids get trampled by geese and get away with it", like Avery. She wanted to help other students and the teachers. She wanted Hogwarts to be a safe place (something it wasn't now).
Samantha giggled as the boys were talking about cutting Avery in half. That was when she noticed an other pumpkin on the walls. Apparently Samantha hadn't been the only one to see the pumpkin, because Avery started to chase it. She didn't pay that much attention to the boy. She had walked to the portraits, which were moving dangerously, and placed them still. The wizard and witches in the portraits had been a part of her home for the last year and she couldn't just let their homes fall down.
After making sure the portraits were hanging still, she turned around so she would face the other students again. "I will pass on pumpkin-wrestling, but I will join you supervising. After all I am the oldest here, so it is my responsibility to make sure nobody dies."
"That's a really good question, Matthew!" Samantha was now wondering the same thing. It would be a pretty hard task to not let the other pumpkin out. Matt seemed like a clever guy, he had been able to preform a spell perfectly in one try and he had noticed a problem.Word count: 470

As Avery introduced himself, Rachel smiled. "I'm Rachel. Nice to meet the both of you!" She said, introducing herself to the two. As soon as that little bit was finished, she then found Avery wrestling with a pumpkin which made her sweat dropped. She remembered about the geese problem again. She didn't have any wand with her so she resorted into catching the geese old fashioned way and chasing after them, kinda fighting them one on one. Snapping out of her thoughts, Samantha declined the invitation to wrestle a crazy pumpkin but will supervise and Matthew the same but asked a question concerning the trapped pumpkin in the closet.
How can they not let the pumpkin inside the closet escape while getting the wrestling pumpkin in there? Rachel wasn't an expert but she does know quite a few spells to use on different occasions. "Maybe use a freezing charm or immobulus? Or anything that can freeze or paralyze a magical pumpkin?" She thought aloud. The only tricky part is, she only knew one freezing spell and she has only tiny bits of confidence that the spell would work. And regarding the wrestling pumpkin, she'll help Avery but with using a wand.

So, prefects were actually supposed to make the school safe? And not create geese that trampled people? Well, that was news to him. Huh. Definitely something to think about and reconsider. "Well, if that's the case," he began, thinking it over in his head and tapping his chin, "maybe being a prefect is too much work and no fun. Sounds like only scary people would want to become prefects. Whip kids into shape to keep them out of trouble or something." Well, there goes his aspiration to becoming a prefect one day. The boy couldn't even keep himself safe; how could he possibly keep anyone else safe and out of trouble?
Okay, fine, so Matthew didn't want to cut him in half. "Oh well, have it your way," he resigned to a dramatically dissatisfied sigh. "Digesting food and breathing is a little overrated, in my opinion, but it would be nice to walk, I guess." It would be a little difficult to play quidditch if there were two disconnected halves of him, after all. The legs certainly wouldn't be able to hold onto his broom on their own.
The pumpkin was a cheeky little rascal, tossing and shrieking his ear off, giving him a face-full of green. Was his trusty dormmate going to come to his rescue? No, all he did was ask a smart stupid question about how to get the second pumpkin in without letting the other one out. "Not...helpful...at-all!" he managed one word at a time through gritted teeth. Okay, the question was actually very valid now that he thought about it, but he was struggling really hard right now. It took all his strength just to keep the pumpkin in place. Sam was definitely going to help him, right? She was so helpful at the lake the other week, after all, and she even brought him chips backstage at the talent show. He knew he could rely on her!
"I will pass on pumpkin-wrestling, but I will join you supervising. After all I am the oldest here, so it is my responsibility to make sure nobody dies." If his jaw dropped in astonishment, a vine would've gone straight into his mouth, so only his eyes widened at her words. "You too, Sam?" he cried out, as he rolled on the floor with the fighting pumpkin, and shouted as if his heart had shattered into a million tiny pieces, which it really hadn't, because it's not like he'd actually be that heartbroken if she or anyone else didn't feel like rolling on the floor with a pumpkin. "The betrayal! I'm definitely dying right now!" he called out between rolls. Okay, that was a bit overy-dramatic, because he certainly wasn't hurt at all, but was Avery Chen ever not dramatic in anything he did?
He glanced at his last resort, Rachel with the stunning blue hair. Blue was a color that signified reliability, right? Wasn't that why tech firms like IBM, Facebook, and Venmo all had signature blue colors for their logos, despite the fact that they could very well leak your personal information? She didn't seem to move in his direction at all, and instead suggested using a couple charms without casting any of them. To be fair, Avery didn't know any of them himself. "Blue is the color of trust and reliability!" he yelled, not sure if anyone else would understand what in the world he was yelling about. Well, his emotions had to surface in some way, after all. Perhaps they'd all think he'd gone mad.
His mind raced. "Someone, open the door! Someone else prepare to levitate the other pumpkin! I'll shove this one inside!" he called, turning his face at the last second to avoid the flying vines. Too late. He spat out a leaf.
