The end of the year was coming up, and Santario was feeling the pressure of her final exams, and now that duelling was over until the summer games, she didn’t have a way to blow off steam. Sitting in her common room was starting to get maddening, and no matter how hard she tried, she just could not focus on her studies today. So she changed into a pair of her running clothes and found herself on the way to the training pitch.

She had started the habit of jogging around the training pitch when she had joined Quidditch in her first year. It had just become such a part of her regular routine that she had kept it up when she had switched to duelling. After all, one still needed to be nimble while spells were being slung at them.
Once she arrived, San set her green water bottle in the grass and reached up, gathering her hair into a low ponytail securing it in place with a hair tie. San was not as accustomed to running in the midafternoon since she was usually here in the evenings after classes, but thankfully today was partly cloudy because if she had to stay inside one more minute, she was bound to scream. Regardless of the cloud cover, she had made sure to put sun protectant on her skin as the fair complexion did not always enjoy more prolonged sun exposure.
She checked that her sneakers were tied up tightly, and once satisfied, Santario would kick off at a decent clip jogging around the outskirts of the training area.

There was something about being out in the fresh air that was just fantastic. The atmosphere here at Hogwarts was so different than back home in Dublin. It wasn't better, wasn't worse, just different. Today was no different. Jack had put on his favorite sleeveless hoodie, grey athletic shorts, and an old pair of trainers only to step outside and grinned. Thank Merlin that he was able to get out and get some exercise. The boy had always been good at running, not that he enjoyed as much as other things, but he was quick. Nobody can outpace him, either. At least in his head. He had grown into the habit of running just out of necessity back home. He made a tendency to say some big words without the big muscles to back himself up. The Prefect figured that it was probably a good skill to upkeep.
He had already been running for ten minutes or so before another figure caught his eye. As he ran closer, there was a familiarity in the way the girl looked. Had they met before? Damn his pea-sized brain and memory of a goldfish! As he finally got within earshot of the girl, Jack let out a "On yer left!" Before slowing his run into a jog, then walk. It was gnawing at his brain! Shit! Where have I seen you before?? "'Cuse me. We've met, right? I'm pretty sure it wasn't a dream, yeah? I think I'd remember that dream." Ah yes, Casual flirting. One of Jack's strong suits. When he wasn't finding more ways to love himself, he was actually a pretty good flirt. "So. We've met, right?"

Had she been paying attention to who else might also be jogging around, no. It was not unusual for other people to be here doing the same as her, usually quidditch players or other people that just liked to get that runner’s high. Though she wanted to think of it as more of numbness, nothing but your feet hitting the ground, your heart pounding, and the sound of your breathing. Though that did not mean that there was not an occasional interrupt or two when someone was recognized.

Hers would come in a polite warning that someone moving faster than her was coming up on her left. San moved to the right half a step to make sure that there was more than enough room, not that there was not a whole training pitch of room. Habit from running on an actual track or sidewalk still, perhaps. She noticed the boy slowed down, allowing her to regain any ground he had on her before then dropping to a walk, and as she passed him, he spoke. Santario pivoted, spinning herself in a half-circle to face him, planting her other foot down to stop the movement. The abrupt stop caused the tail of her hair to land on her shoulder.
His casual flirting was either ignored or unnoticed, but most people would be able to tell that it was probably the latter of the two.“Us? Of course we have Hero. I ironically gave you the nickname Hero in last summer’s chess combat because you walked in, running your mouth and talking a big game. Then you kind of earned it by helping shield people, so it has stuck with me. Santario Martin.” She added her name at the end, figuring that if he had trouble remembering that they were in chess combat together that he doubtfully remembered her name.
“I know you did not join duelling this year, but I was surprised not to see you on the quidditch team.” She could not remember if she had seen him spectating any of the duels, but then again, she hardly paid attention to the spectators. Her focus remained on her opponents or on the duel she oversaw. “Though congrats on being Prefect.” The congrats were well belated but still carried the same sincerity.

Hero? Hero! Right- that was familiar! How could he forget? She was the chick that was slinging spells like a pro during last year's summer camp! He was kicking himself for not remembering! Plus, Hero was a pretty great nickname. Pondering the whole idea of being called a hero, Jack couldn't help but lean back and chuckle. "Right, I was rather awesome during that whole thing." It only took a moment to pull the kid out of his mental revelry and recognize that she was giving him her name...again. The prefect gave a thankful grin while trying to look as relaxed as possible. His gangster lean and the way he tried his best not to look too grateful was obviously him putting up a wall of bravado. San saving him any more embarrassment that would come from a forgotten name, he continued to speak "Oh right- Jack Warren." He stuck his hand out, palm up. People shake hands when they meet, right?
"Oh, Quidditch. Yeah, I was a backup for the quidditch team. I got some playin' time, but overall it was a tad bit borin'. I quit when I heard some rumblin' about broom racing. As for duelin', I'm not really one for spell castin'. Can do it just fine, but it's not interesting to me." The boy just shrugged his shoulders, "I feel like I'm not a good teammate if I have to be honest. I generally like doin' my own thing." There had been some whispers on the wind that Jack caught hold of, and considering that he considered himself one the fastest kids at this school, it felt like a perfect match. The nearly year and a half late congratulations did knock him off guard. Was that supposed to be an insult or something?! Like most hot-headed kiddos, Jack opened his mouth to spit out a retort. Yet after catching the candid look that the dueling captain wore, he forced himself to stop. Still with his right hand clutched into a fist, he attempted to calmly reply, "Uh—Thanks. I—I've been one for ages..." Warren was not great at veiling his sudden urge to respond rudely, but he was still proud that he had managed to stop himself. "You said that you didn't see me at duelin'. Does that mean you're a duelist? I never really kept up with that stuff, to be honest." As if he hadn't just asked another question, he quickly followed up with another because a master conversationalist, Jack was not. "So what are you doin' out here, now? Running, I see obviously, but why? I guessed that most of the posh people that go to this place aren't really the runnin' type." The statement wasn't intended as an insult, but the boy was curt and as previously stated, wasn't a master conversationalist.

Jack Warren, duly noted she thought as she reached forward and took his hand in a firm but respectful grasp. “Pleasure to properly make your acquaintance.” Considering they had never been formally introduced. In fact, besides last year, and perhaps some classes in which they might have had very little to no interaction at all, she could hardly recall having spent any time in his presence.

Huh, he had been in quidditch? Maybe it had been the few games she had skipped. She had done her best to attend most of the games and get photographs of the players, specifically her friends Alan and Quinn. Though there had been a few games that she just had not felt like going to, and it wasn’t like Jack had been explicitly on her radar. “I understand what you mean. My cousin does broom racing. I see similar traits in the two of you.” A smirk graced her lips when he sputtered through his gratitude.
“The polite thing to do, considering we have never really had a conversation.” A one-shoulder shrug accompanied her words as she thought it was no different than her grandmother congratulating someone who had received a promotion within the past year or so. Perhaps, this had been the wrong thing to say, and she would make a note to ask about it over the summer. Then, however, the boy asked her if she was in duelling, and she couldn’t fight the proud smile that spread across her face, lighting up her eyes regardless of his rapid-fire questions. “I am actually one of the captains of the Slytherin team.” She held off the undefeated part in an attempt to not sound like she was bragging.
“As for the running, well, I suppose the same as you? Letting off steam and keeping limber. Must stay quick on your feet when people are slinging spells at you. Plus, it helps with endurance” It was easier to help build up your stamina when you were used to exhausting yourself and pushing your limits, even if it was only with running. “Do you think they will do broom racing even this summer?” If they did, surely that meant that her cousin would be coming, and if that were the case, she sincerely hoped he outflew her.

Running isn't fun. It's probably the least fun thing a person could do. However, the fact the running is healthy and allows you to do cool shite all the time was the only factor in him making himself move quickly around the Hogwarts grounds for no reason. Then, adjusting his hair, the kid combed through the mop of hair with his fingers. Why was it that he always felt the need to fix the mess on the top of his head when he was around pretty girls? "Similar traits? So charmin', funny, good lookin', and athletic?" He grinned at the Slytherin Duelist. "]That seems to run in both our families." More attempts to flirt that the girl most likely wouldn't pick up, not that Jack would notice. He only cared that he was saying cool words and complimenting himself. Thankfully the boy wasn't so self-centered to not listen when Santario spoke. There was a difference in being self-oriented and self-centered, and Jack preferred to consider himself the former. He would not listen to somebody that happened to be speaking to him.
How did Jack not know that she was a captain of the snake team? Good lord, he was behind the loop in the rumor mill, wasn't he? "That's pretty cool! I bet you put a beating the other houses." Jack knew that his ex, Willow, was a captain of the Hufflepuff team. So any chance he could cheer against her, he would. There were no hard feelings. Obviously, why would there be? It's not like he would hold a grudge...
"That's fair. I can imagine that being able to duck and weave is important in not getting hit." As he spoke, the boy mimicked the actions of ducking and weaving, just like a boxer. Finally, Jack raised his hands in front of his face only to do a quarter turn and threw out a few practice jabs. Not showing off, totally. Jack was pulled out of his Imaginarium as San asked about the chances of having a summer broom racing event. "Oh, god, I hope so. I want to show up those other schools. Show 'em that Hogwarts is number one!" Like an anime character, he threw up a single finger as if that would help remind the girl of his point.

Santario’s eyes glanced up just for a moment as he fussed with his hair before landing back on his face as he rattled off traits. Considering he had never met her cousin or seen anyone in her family, this one wasn’t entirely over her head and managed to produce a slight smile on the Slytherin’s lips. While she might not have taken them as the flirtations they were, she did understand them as compliments. Jack was not the worst looking. She could see him in some kind of warrior scene in a painting; the scar helped with that for sure.

Her slight smile turned into a grin as he mentioned her putting a beating on the other houses. “Well, we did win the year, and I am one of the undefeated.” She was not typically one to brag or show off, but there was something about his attitude that seemed to bring it out in her. Santario nodded her agreement as Jack spoke about ducking and weaving only to make her laugh as he mimicked their motions along with some punches. Santario herself had pulled off some impressive dodges during her duels, and she attributed her footwork to things like this.
“Well, if there is, I’ll be rooting for you, Hero. Angel is as fierce of a racer as her temperament is, though, so watch out for her. She may be small, but she is not to be underestimated by any means.” Santario seemed to nod at her own statement as she crossed her arms under her chest. “I’ll make sure to have my camera, though, and get you some good photos. I can give you any good ones of you that I manage to get.” San figured she could probably get any photos she took to him sometime in October since she would have to send them off to her grandfather to get developed this time.
